kron. 4 news at 6. >> good evening, everybody. i'm vicki liviakis and i'm grant lotus. it is the last weekend for horse racing at the historic golden gate fields. the track is the last of its kind in the bay and has really faced scrutiny for lots of horses dying there. kron four's lezla gooden reports. >> golden gate fields will open their gates for its final time on sunday. the track is holding races throughout the weekend. on friday, some fans came to experience the track for the nostalgia. i heard it >> i kind buddy dog. need store over here. >> historical track holds memories and family ties for some like samantha fay, a local horse advocate. her grandfather was a mayor. our bunny, when the track first opened in 1941. yeah. when my great grandfather opened golden gate fields in the 1940's, he would also preside

over the winner's circle ceremonies in these types of things. and i even have family members that may come out and watch the final race and honor of my great grandfather. but she says the closure is long overdue. calling the treatment of the horses here a tragedy. i my heart and my mind are both with the horses that we weren't able to save. so golden gate fields kills many courses every year since they announced the closure in july of 2023. >> 19 horses have been killed here according to the california horse racing board. >> that was, of course, death recorded on friday here. samantha says this is why she's been calling for their closure over new horse racing board claims that horse racing deaths in california are decreasing. the rate of deaths is decreasing, but the california public has shown that we see horses as individuals and every single death is a travesty and every single that is not worth entertainment of whatever people believe is happening here. the 140 acre tract is

their happened in the eastbound lane at 160rd avenue. chp says it nobody was hurt. no word tonight on exactly what caused that crash. >> san francisco police are looking for this person. they believe this person may be connected to. >> messages and threats left outside a home on grove street in the city. the victim >> told police he found racially offensive items and messages left right next to the home. this is video from in april. and this happened in the same area where a longtime resident, a black man told kron 4 he received packages containing a black doll with a noose around its neck just days before his home burned out. police have not said if this man is connected to those incidents, but anyone with info about this person, person ere is asked to call police. in the south bay. a woman is behind bars tonight after police say she stabbed a man to death in downtown san jose happened sunday on north 17th and east santa clara streets. police say they found a man bleeding from a stab

wound, not breathing. days later, officers found and arrested a woman at a home in san jose. no word tonight on a motive. but this is san jose 17th homicide this year. >> alameda county district attorney pamela price under fire tonight for reaching a poor, a plea deal or so says the sister of the murder victim kron four's. dan kerman reports. on september 6th of 2021. the body of bin hamman was dumped along the side of the road in the oakland hills. he was bound, gagged and strangled to death following his kidnapping during a home invasion robbery. 4 people were arrested in several charged with murder, kidnapping and home invasion. but a plea deal announced monday by alameda county district attorney pamela price looks nothing like those initial charges. >> pamela price is more concerned about her win or loss record, then bringing justice to the california bay

area. lori henson is the murder victim's sister. >> she says she found out about this plea deal through a news release and was horrified to find out only one person now faces a murder charge, second-degree murder. in fact, and all kidnapping charges have been dropped. that's a slap in the face to the citizens that. >> that pay our tax dollars and expect to be kept safe. now, one of the alleged kidnappers pleads guilty to a home invasion robbery and faces a 6 year 8 month prison sentence. >> and the other alleged kidnapper pleads guilty to first degree residential burglary and faces a 6 year state prison sentence on action. discouraged. >> i feel that they have. they've let us down in a press release district attorney price as each defendant has entered guilty pleas and accepted responsibility for their actions. >> the pleas by the defendant ensures they will face the appropriate consequences and accountability for their conduct in these cases. but

evaluation of the evidence and our ability to prove the case beyond a reasonable doubt, the prosecutor was able to obtain multiple convictions, including a guilty plea to murder by one of the defendants. list growing now and the number of wildfires that we're following for a grass fire in nation that forced evacuations is not completely. >> been at 3 acres. it broke out this morning near bayshore road. crews say that they're now mopping up hot spots in the area. nobody was hurt. no buildings were damaged. and then in brentwood, the albers fire that is now 95% contained and it's 23 acres that broke out just before 11, 30 this morning near the intersection of alberta court in deer valley. road. nobody hurt there. buildings damaged either in the north bay, the crystal fire that started wednesday afternoon north of saint helene is now 95% contained. >> 60 acres burned there for firefighters were hospitalized for heat related conditions

wednesday and the big corral fire near tracy is now 100% contained after burning 14,000 acres. that started last saturday. crews are now looking into what caused these fires. now to 4 zone forecast as we get a live look outside now at the white tower there clouds off the distance and the tree indicating that some wind got some wind, but things have cooled off. so the wind is bad for fires. the cooling off is good for fires. >> keeping them down. and kathy trafton is here with the weekend forecast and on the balance. you have to thank for the weather for cooperating with the firefighters because he's much cooler conditions really make a difference. whether really is varied across the bay area right now. >> if you're in santa say it's all about clear skies, tranquil weather. >> but not everywhere. if you are atop mount tam up highs looking down, there's a big bank. it of gray the winds are ushering that gray, the stratus and low clouds along

the coastline right through the golden gate. we're seeing some pretty good breezes, the strongest breezes at this hour are in vacaville. the winds die down overnight and by tomorrow morning, really quite tranquil, lovely. and then a really kick up by tomorrow evening. so look at sandra fell where you see the areas of orange and you areas of magenta purple. those are strongest breezes and that's what we get tomorrow. and sandra fell at 38 miles per hour. breezes that bill at 22 miles per hour. breezes temperatures right now mainly in the 60's and 70's 70 for fremont. on the other hand, quite toasty in brentwood. that's one of the hot spots. it's 90 also kelsey bill. but the coolest temperatures at this hour, the decade day at 53 degrees. >> thank you, kathy. san francisco police are searching for a strong-arm robbery suspect. the brutal theft was in chinatown. and as our kron four's philippe to com reports tonight, the victim's terrifying encounter was all captured on video.

>> blindsided and caught off guard is terrible that somebody would do that to another human being at around 6 o'clock wednesday morning. surveillance video from a business near grant avenue and jackson street shows a woman walking along the sidewalk in san francisco's chinatown. she was alone at the time and the suspect took advantage of that. >> she was approached from behind from male suspect who took her belongings and fortune to forced her to the ground prior to fleeing the scene. the suspect left on foot. the victim gave chase when she got back on her feet. >> but she never caught up with a thief. the victim we did about 6 hours before going to central station to report the robbery. a medic was called to the station to medically evaluate the victim. >> and the victim was taken to a local hospital for non-life-threatening injuries is absolutely important to report the case because if you did not report it, according to the police department.

>> it did not happen. leanna louie says it breaks your heart to watch video of the violent attack. she is founder and president of the united peace collaborative, nonprofit group of volunteers that conducts walking safety patrols in chinatown. i don't know she's armed with anything shoes even aware. >> that per se was around her. you know, if she was aware she could be easily pepper sprayed him when he was approaching her too closely. police are not releasing any information about the victim. victim advocates also suggest carrying a whistle to alert others nearby. if you feel threatened. i always think that people should walk in pairs like. >> i hardly ever go out alone. so far, no arrests have been made. >> philippe djegal kron. 4 news. >> coming up, why a new law set to take effect next month. we'll make hidden charges. people pay at restaurants a lot more clear. and tomorrow the annual juneteenth event in san francisco. we have a breakdown of some of the road closures you might encounter.

>> the man has been arrested after police say he was selling drugs on social media to kids in santa rosa. police say 32 year-old of hurtado diaz was selling marijuana, thc, vape pens, mushrooms, and cocaine to teenagers. they say he would use instagram, snap chat and telegram to reach out to the kids and then use cash app and venmo for payment. police say last month they spotted him picking up a student in the back of a sonoma county high school to give them drugs. officers later detained him during a traffic stop during a search warrant at the suspect's home. police say they also found several guns, including an ar 15 style assault weapon. he's been booked into jail on several felonies. >> tonight, berkeley's mayor is weighing in on the state supreme court's decision to allow uc berkeley to move forward with its plan to build housing at people's park. the decision ends a yearlong legal

battle over this historic landmark. opponents argue that the historic park should be preserved. but mayor jesse are again, says that the move would be a big help to the city's unhoused population. >> this will provide permanent housing for the needy is people community people that are currently living on the streets. think that's really a great resolution due to the fact that people's party long been place of people sought refuge from homes for people people's park. >> the mayor says that the plan for the site does include more than 2 acres of public and open space. >> new state law targets so-called junk fees by businesses and goes into effect next month. but there's a proposal now. >> that would allow restaurants to keep tacking on surcharges if they reveal the cost ahead of time. erin myers has details. >> the new law goes into effect on july. first require all in pricing. so that means no hidden charges or fees that you find out about later. but

there may be some leeway for restaurants, but let's start with that new law senate bill. 478 makes it illegal for businesses to advertise or list a price for goods or service. that doesn't include all of the fees and charges associated with it other than tax and shipping costs. oftentimes they are hitting season, which is stellar, uses a low price to attract the customer and then disclose additional fees in smaller print. we'll reveal additional charges later in the buying process. you see this with event tickets, hotels and lodging, restaurants and food delivery. the honest pricing laws meant to protect consumers from deceptive price advertising by showing the all-in price for goods and services up front before getting the bill. this makes it easier for consumers to compare prices between merchants. now a new proposal would make an exception for restaurants. it would allow restaurants to continue to add see such a surcharges in mandatory gratuities. as long as the charges are revealed upfront clearly and conspicuously this instead of using those all in prices, those extra charges allow restaurants to make contributions to workers,

health care and other employee benefits. there had been some confusion as initially the state attorney general's office said restaurants could keep surcharges later said charges had to be included in the prices on the menu. this proposal would clarify that. as for the proposal, this is what people this morning had to say. of course, i want restaurant workers to get. >> but they're supposed to getting in all the things like that. so i think 100% if it's written on the menu. showing out to the customer, i think them i'm completely ok with that. but yeah, i think it's when it's hidden from you. and it just gets frustrating as a customer the new law doesn't require businesses to change their prices just makes it easier for consumers to know what they're paying up front. >> and that was erin myers reporting for us tonight. this weekend, juneteenth celebrations begin in the bay area on saturday. tomorrow, san francisco will host its juneteenth parade and festival. the parade. >> kicking off at 11 in the morning on market and spirits streets that will travel down market to 8th street. and if

you're in the city, muni is warning folks, there will be several closures here. you see them on your screen. they will begin early in the morning tomorrow and last until the afternoon. muni is also alerting people that several routes will be affected. the parade commemorates the emancipation of enslaved black americans. this is video from last year's inaugural parade. there also be a festival with live music and food i got a chance to catch up with the executive director of the san francisco human rights commission today about the importance of the celebration. >> thousands of people registered for the festival and we hope that they come early and watch the community members, the the pageant winners little miss and mister juneteenth that they get to see the cars that they go and join the block parties. but we've seen tremendous growth from last year to this year. and you consider the how many other parades the city has that have been happening for decades. and to finally have this one that centers black

culture. is pretty special. the real struggle, i think to some degree is people who may say, well, everybody, all the black people left san francisco. why would you do this parade here? and i think that's even more reason to do it is to say that we are committed to whether it's 1 1000 or 100,000 that we are committed to addressing the disparities and some of the harm that's continued to be done, where people have felt unwelcome here. and so doing this parade for me says we want folks to realize that they're welcome here. >> after the parade, the festival will be in at noon at civic center plaza and run until 6 o'clock tomorrow night. more than 10,000 people are expected to attend and we have a complete list of juneteenth celebrations in the bay. just scan the qr code here. that will take you right to the juneteenth section of our website. kron 4 dot com. whether time now is we get a live look outside the view here from the top of mount temple pilots. >> you know, a lot of activities happening in san

francisco for the weekend and the weather is going work in our favor is i think it is especially like low clouds and fog cool conditions because that is what we're in for. it's beautiful that not time. a pious shows the picture of the clouds and the fog. it's not cloudy everywhere. some areas are still clear. the south bay, but you can see this view of white tower. my goodness gracious, yeu've got the breeze is going. you've got the clouds coming in and temperatures certainly are cool. what happened only a few days ago, we had really hot temperatures. the area of high pressure that brought us these very warm conditions. it has moved off to the 4 corners. we're left with a nice day and an area of low pressure that's affecting us for the weekend. and then things change again as the next area of high pressure cues up to pay us a visit. that's next week. so in the meantime, our weather is all about this area of low pressure. it's helping to push in. the breeze is helping to push in the clouds. terrific conditions. this is great news for the people going out

>> from 4 is your local election headquarters said we're just 5 months out from election day. governor newsom is officially launched a ballot measure campaign to try enshrine the right to same marriage into the state constitution. our capitol correspondent eytan wallace gives us a closer look at the freedom to marry initiative. well, to be clear, same marriage is legal in california just as it is in all 50 states. but our state constitution still contains language. >> that says otherwise. and now governor gavin newsom hopes to change that. >> we have a special role and responsibility to lead. and that's with this initiative. it's all about with that.

governor gavin newsom officially launch the campaign in support of what's been dubbed the freedom to marry initiative set to appear on the ballot. >> this november. it would enshrine the right to same marriage and to the california state constitution. i want to be here believe in a little history, as you may know on this issue. but it's the state's recent history. why newsom says this measure is needed in 2008 california voters approved prop 8 to ban same marriage across the state and formally defined marriage in the state constitution as a union between a man and a woman. well, a federal court overturned the law 2013. and while the united states supreme court legalized same marriage nationwide in 2015, the prop 8 language defining marriage between a man and a woman has remained in the state constitution all these years later, newsom wants to change that. we're making the decision to stand up. newsome, an lgbtq+ advocates say the bella measure is needed now amid concerns the united states supreme court could one
