roads closed this weekend. what you need to know before you head out the door. >> when fun time from the bay area's local news station. you're watching kron. 4 news. >> thanks for joining us here on companies at 10. i'm noelle bellow and i'm dan thorn, the largest insurance carrier in california says it will let some homeowners keep their insurance. but there is a catch. state farm announced in march they would not be renewing thousands of home insurance policies because of the risk of wildfires. now, the insurance company says it will renew those policies, but clients. we'll have to specifically secure fire coverage from the california fair plan. it's a state insurance program for homeowners in high-risk areas. insurance consumer advocate aimee bock says the move eases some panic, but it's not a long-term solution. >> people who are loyal. >> to state farm is going to be great this is the insurance company you want to be with.

then this is a helpful piece of news, but it's going you're going to still be paying more. and now you're going to have to have 2 policies and said, wait. >> buck says that she understand state farm has been nervous about wildfire risks and home values in california, but also believes state farm is overreacting. >> that new policy is announced as more fires have popped up across the bay area. today, a 3 acre grass fire in benicia this morning forced evacuations near bayshore road. it has been completely contained. firefighters say no one was injured and the fire did not cause any damage in brentwood. the outburst fire burned 523 acres. it's now 95% contained. flames broke out just before 11, 30 this morning near the intersection of albert's court and deer valley road. no one hurt there and no buildings damaged >> new at 10 after undergoing

3 major surgeries and spending the last 5 weeks at the hospital. san jose police officer jamie arradondo is finally home tonight. the san jose police department posted video of the officer being discharged and being cheered on by his fellow officers as well as mayor matt mahan. the post says the officer still has a long journey ahead of him. all right. was one of 2 officers injured during a shootout last month at a hotel in the santa teresa neighborhood. the other officer was released from the hospital shortly after investigators say a domestic violence survivor and her 3 children. we're sheltering in the hotel when the suspect showed up with a gun and then engaged in a gun battle with police for almost 20 rounds were exchanged. the suspect identified as kevin briones was critically injured in the shooting. we do not have an update on his condition tonight. >> a large tree limb came falling down onto the muni

lines and a parked truck this afternoon. it all happened in front of some shops in san francisco's hayes valley neighborhood. traffic was blocked between octavia and buchanan street crews worked to clean it up this afternoon. it was, of course, pretty windy across certain parts of the bay area for sure. looks like maybe the wind is going to continue this weekend. maybe county trapped in checking in now. hey, yes, the sea breezes will continue after heat wave earlier this week. >> that is a distant memory the sea breezes are bringing in lots of gray, stratus and clouds. in fact. >> this weekend we're going to see an awful lot in the way of gray skies right along the coastline. gray mornings inland. and then we'll start to yield to some afternoon sunshine, especially inland outside right now numbers in the 50's and 60's through much of the bay area. hayward. 61 degrees. berkeley. 54 this hour. petaluma 56 degrees in timber on is 50. so it's not exactly warm. you head east

prospect of several mountain lion sightings in the silicon valley just within the last 2 weeks may be scary to some many of the people hiking through kelly. part that i talked to say. >> they are concerned about their actually well aware they are entering the habitat. many of these animals. >> yeah, we're just here just off having some exercise, you know, getting some sign despite the warning. other reason mountain lion sighting kelly park was full of people getting an early start to the weekend on to the probably more scared of us and them the other way around playing around the disc golf with his friends. levi lucian says he's not worried about seeing about life now. it definitely makes you think couple times, you know, you're like you hear something in the back on. you're like, oh, what is that kind of thing? you're like a little bit edgy. just 24 hours before this disc golf game, mountain lion was spotted at the park. it comes just a day after a mountain lion was spotted several miles south off ella drive and war. admiral way. >> and before all of these

sightings may sot 3 mountain lion sightings. one on the 18th and to focus. i feel it's safety concern not only for the public but for everybody that works here, do for new fish and wildlife say if you do see a mountain lion, stand your ground, do not run. >> tried to appear large maintain eye contact and slowly back away without turning your back and definitely keep a close eye on your pets. >> are you guys? >> don't know that they'd be afraid. they'd start barking. that's for sure. luce gonzalez says she walks at kelly park nearly every day, but the mountain lions don't stop her. i would never be here at especially with them instead still enjoying her time with her dogs while having a healthy respect for nature. now that we've been going into their habitat more and more, you know, there's more housing being built, though. i think that. >> creating you know, that sort of situation to happen in

san jose. jackie moment. >> kron 4 news. >> happening tomorrow, caltrain will be closed for the weekend. all services being suspended as the agency test its new electric fleet. there will be no trains between san francisco and san jose on saturday or sunday. caltrans says limited bus service will be offered but only to san jose dared on palo alto and millbrae stations. weekend marks the first tests where 8 electric trains will run simultaneously. caltrans says the new fleet will be quicker and quieter than the current diesel trains and offer a more comfortable commute. >> these new trains are honest to god. stunning. they move faster. they move more comfortably. they've got great new amenities on board. we've got plugs in every static seat. we're going to be launching with public-facing wife. i've got lovely digital displays. this is just an all around better train and we cannot wait to get people on board.

>> if all goes well, this will be the final full weekend shutdown september. 21st is the launch date for the new electric trains. caltrain says once that happens, the express trains will make the trip from san francisco to san jose in under an hour and local riders will shave about 25 minutes from their commute. time. some big juneteenth celebrations are happening in the bay area this weekend. tomorrow, san francisco juneteenth parade will be shutting down. >> several major roads. the parade's going to start at 11:00am on market and spear that it will travel down market to 8 street. and if you're in the city, transit officials are warning that there will these road closures right here. here's the list of all the ones that you've got to look out for. they say many routes are also going to be impacted. the parade, of course, commemorates the end. emancipation of enslaved black americans. >> thousands of people registered for the festival and we hope that they come early and watch the community members, the the pageant winners little miss and mister

juneteenth that they get to see the cars that they go and join the block parties. but we've seen tremendous growth from last year to this year. and you consider the how many other parades the city has that have been happening for decades. and to finally have this one that centers black culture. is pretty special. the real struggle, i think to some degree is people who may say, well, everybody, all the black people left san francisco. why would you do this parade here? and i think that's even more reason to do it is to say that we are committed to whether it's 1 1000 or 100,000 that we are committed to addressing the disparities and some of the harm that's continued to be done, where people have felt unwelcome here. and so doing this parade for me says we want folks to realize that they're welcome here. >> after the parade and festival is planned for noon at civic center plaza. more than 10,000 people are expected to be there. >> and contra costa county, a

>> tonight, the alameda county district attorney is once again under fire. yeah, she's being criticized for a plea deal. she made. >> in a case involving a man who was kidnapped and killed congress. and carmen spoke with the murder victim's sister. >> pamela price is more concerned about her win or loss record, then bringing justice to the california bay area. >> this east bay murder victim's sister says alameda county district attorney pamela price has reached a lousy plea deal, allowing her brother's kidnappers and killers to serve little time behind bars on action. disparaged. >> i feel that they have. they've let us down. >> henson's brother ben hammond was kidnapped during a home invasion robbery on september 6th of 2021. he was eventually bound, gagged and strangled to death and dumped alongside the road in the oakland hills. initially, 4 people were taken into custody. several charged with murder and kidnapping. but by

the time prices office announced the plea deal on monday of this week, whole kidnapping charges were dropped and only one person pled guilty to second-degree murder. the murders that have 25 years to life. >> considering all of that information, she's refusing to acknowledge their prior behavior. >> one of the alleged kidnappers pleads guilty to a home invasion robbery and faces a six-year 8 month prison sentence. and the other alleged kidnapper pleads guilty to first degree residential burglary and faces a 6 year state prison sentence in its press. release prices office says the pleas by the defendant ensures they will face the appropriate consequences and accountability for their conduct in these cases. but the dead man's sister doesn't see it that way. >> this me every single day. every single day. and health

advisories and it's a distant memory because now the sea breezes have kicked in. we've got low clouds. we've go- fog. >> and much cooler conditions. here's a view of sfo. the control tower right there showing re skies right above there. temperatures now mainly in the 50's throughout the bay area. 59 for concord. 52 in san francisco. what a difference this makes. there's the culprit. that's the area of high pressure that triggered all the heat. it is moved on. it's horgotten all about us right over the 4 corners heading into texas, leaving us with lovely conditions. in fact, cooler through entire weekend. that is until another area of high pressure heads in our direction. queuing up just in time for the work week. yes, we'll have rising temperatures come monday, tuesday and wednesday, but in the meantime, we're stuck with this area of low pressure. yeah, says all the way up in the gulf of alaska. the counter clockwise circulation around this low is helping to push the seabreeze is in the

coming over here. circle track holds memories and family ties for some like samantha fay, a local force advocate. >> grandfather was the mayor of albany when the track first opened in 1941. >> yeah. when my great grandfather opened golden gate fields in the 1940's, he would also preside over the winner's circle ceremonies in these types of things. and i even have family members that may come out and watch the final race and honor of my great grandfather. >> but she says the closure is long overdue, calling the treatment of the horses here at tragedy. thoughts my my heart and my mind are both with the horses that we weren't able to say it. so golden gate fields kills many courses every year since they announced the closure in july of 2023, 19 horses have been killed here. according to the california horse racing board, there was horse deaths recorded here on friday. samantha says this is why she's been calling for their

closure. bring, course, racing board claims that horse racing deaths in california are decreasing. the rate of deaths is decreasing. but that california public has shown that we see horses as individuals and every single death is a travesty and every single is not worth entertainment of whatever people believe the 140 acre track is going to be missed. but other residents who say the financial impact will be felt it's not developed into something else. circle for the city of albany because get almost a million dollars taxes every year from the owners of the racetrack. so we're going to lives it out to get in kron. 4 news. >> and animal rights group plans to hold a memorial protest outside golden gate fields on sunday. berkeley based direct action everywhere says the vigil is meant to recognize the more than 2000 horses killed since the track opened in 1941. >> coming up here at 10 o'clock, the search for the

stabbed a man to death in downtown san jose. investigators say they found a man bleeding on north 17th and east santa clara street on sunday days later, officers found and arrested a woman at her home in san jose. no word tonight on a motive. >> take a look at this. santa rosa. police say they found dozens of stolen id's forged checks. and this was all inside of a u haul. police then learned that the person who had rented the truck read it it with a fake id and then she had forged more than 100 identities. police eventually arrested her and her alleged co-conspirator both are now in the sonoma county jail. >> police in san francisco are looking for this person. they believe he may be connected to threats left outside a home near alamo square. the victim told police he found racially offensive items and messages left next to his building on grove and still more streets. this video is from april. now

>> our top story this half-hour, a woman forcefully pushed to the ground and robbed in san francisco and the violent attack was caught on camera. >> kron four's philippe gaulle shows us the video at around 6 o'clock wednesday morning. surveillance video from a business near grant avenue and jackson street shows a woman walking along the sidewalk in san francisco's chinatown. she was alone at the time and the suspect took advantage of that. >> she was approached from behind from male suspect. >> who took her belongings and force you to forced her to the ground prior to fleeing the scene. the suspect left on foot. the victim gave chase when she got back on her feet. but she never caught up with 50's the victim. we did about

6 hours before going to central station to report the robbery medics called to the station to medically evaluate the victim. >> and the victim was taken to a local hospital for nop-life-threatening injuries. she was kind of defenseless. leanna louie says it breaks your heart to watch video of the violent attack. she is founder and president of the united peace collaborative, nonprofit group of volunteers that conducts walking safety patrols in chinatown. we have several south protection courses. and, you know, we make sure that our patrollers carry pepper spray. police are not releasing any information about the victim. but louis recommends people walking city streets carry pepper spray. victim advocates also suggest carrying a whistle to alert others nearby. if you feel threatened perpetrators of crime, if you see them and you say hi to them and they know that you recognize her face, they are not likely to commit a crime very important to be aware of your surroundings. >> and possibly walking group

if you feel unsafe, get to area where you do feel safe and called the police. if you >> need need any assistance. so far, no arrests have been made. philippe djegal kron. 4 news. >> police on the peninsula say they've arrested a woman who took an uber to a shopping center. rob, the driver at knifepoint and then later called police herself asking for help. the robbery happened around noon yesterday in the parking lot of the shopping center on walnut street in redwood city. police say the suspect first old, the uber driver's phone and money. she then took off with items from 2 stores in the area. police say the suspect then called 9-1-1 from downtown redwood city saying she'd been involved in a disturbance and needed help. she is now in custody. >> berkeley's mayor is expressing his satisfaction toward the state supreme court's decision on housing at people's park. the court ruled

this week uc berkeley can move forward with its plan to build student housing at the historic landmark. the decision and that a years long battle with opponents arguing the park should be preserved. uc berkeley says now all legal barriers are clear. it will proceed with construction. the plan for the site includes more than 2 acres of public open space. >> this will provide permanent housing for the needy is people community people that are currently living on the streets. and i think that's really a great resolution due to the fact that people's party has long been place of people sought refuge from homes for people people's park. >> and in that ruling, the court noted berkeley provides housing to the lowest percentage of students compared to other schools. >> in the uc system. >> san francisco's richmond district will be filled with local vendors, carnival games, food and my job for a night market series kicking off tomorrow. the heart of

richmond market is inviting the community to support small businesses and connect with neighbors. supervisor connie chan says this is the first of 4 taking place this summer. the event will be on clement street between 22nd and 25th avenues from 4 until 08:00pm. chan says she is hoping this becomes an annual tradition. >> all right. let's get you checked your 4 zone forecast tonight taking a live look at the bay bridge toll plaza. you can see the fog there off in the distance. definitely a cooler night out there. the scene. yeah. a lot of people trying to get out and about this weekend, though, kathy, what's going on and why wouldn't they? i'll tell you, there are areas this week it was a heat wave. you remember that area? high pressure triggered. >> scorching inland temperatures, excessive heat warnings, heat advisories finding that area of high pressure has moved away and we're left with a big change. you've got the seabreeze is kicking we've got the gray clouds. we've got the fog and it's a welcome relief for anybody who's not a fan of those scorching hot temperatures. this looks like a beautiful image. almost like

art is at 6 clouds. some fog moving in across the bay area. temperatures right now primarily in the 50's, although yes, how about is at 61 degrees. but san francisco, 53 and take a look. also at there are more 58 degrees. concord, 57, those 2 communities see the biggest drop in temperatures in the last 24 hours. so cocker down 9 degrees, livermore down 10 degrees. many other areas about the same as last night at this hour, even in la. and yes, it's still quite toasty in the central valley. nothing like the triple digit temperatures last night. so things are calm along the coast. high pressure has moved on off toward texas and the next area of high pressure is lined up ready to head toward our area come early next week. but in the meantime, we've got low pressure right up there in the gulf of alaska. the counter clockwise circulation is helping to bring the seabreeze is helping to bring the clouds and fog stratus

high temperatures tomorrow are really quite nice about what you'd expect this time of year. nothing unusual, calm, tranquil 50's 60's while along the coast. some 70's and even a few 80's inland and the 10 at 10 forecast. well, we are looking numbers that are really lovely. and we've got definitely an increase in temperatures. coming up for monday, tuesday and wednesday with tuesday is the warmest they drop off again just a little bit as we head toward the end of the 10 day forecast. so a bit of a cool weekend for yeah, cool down. not heard one complaint about selling out after that heat wave that got the >> all right. we'll just 5 months out from election day. governor gavin newsom is launching a ballot measure campaign to enshrine the right to same marriage into the california constitution. kron four's 8 on wallace has the story. >> we have a special role and responsibility to lead. and that's with this initiative.

it's all about with that. governor gavin newsom officially launch the campaign in support of what's been dubbed the freedom to marry initiative set to appear on the ballot. >> this november. it would enshrine the right to same marriage into the california state constitution. i want to be here believe in a little history, as you may know on this issue. but it's the state's recent history. why newsom says this measure is needed in 2008 california voters approved prop 8 to ban same marriage across the state and formally defined marriage in the state constitution as a union between a man and a woman. well, a federal court overturned the law in 2013. and while the united states supreme court legalized same marriage nationwide in 2015, the prop 8 language defining marriage between a man and a woman has remained in the state constitution all these years later, newsom wants to change that. we're making a decision to stand up. newsome, an lgbtq+ advocates say the bella measure is needed now amid concerns the united states supreme court could one

day overturn its decision to legalize same marriage nationwide just like it overturned roe v wade 2 years ago leaving abortion rights to the states. the overturning of roe versus wade showed us that our most basic rights can be taken away. they're coming for us. >> and what is important then is that we live our authentic lives and that we're fighting here. we are. >> in 2024, and what we're not experiencing. we're not experiencing a riphts expansion. we're experiencing a rights regression and that's why it's imperative. but states like california step up and assert themselves at this critical time. the measure already qualified for the ballot with bipartisan approval from the legislature. but the california family council is a post citing concerns the ballot language. >> is too vague. look at what initiative actually says under this new law. there would be no limit to the number of people who could get married the age of people who could get married. >> or did the genetic relationship between people who could get married? that is
