♪ : thanks for coming along on today's adventure. from the columbus zoo, i'm jack hanna, hoping you'll join me next time as i go into the wild. >> now on the kron 4 morning news. this marks the final weekend. of course, races at the historic golden gate fields. why the owners say they're closing those gates for good. and the popular escape from alcatraz triathlon kicks off this weekend with events happening today. all leading up to the big race

tomorrow. >> from the area's local news station. you're watching the kron. 4 morning news at 7. >> good morning. thank you so much for joining us here on the kron. 4 morning news. i'm stephanie lin. >> it's saturday, june the 8th. let's start by getting a look at your weather with dave sphar. hey dave, how's it going? >> stephanie, good morning. were battling quite a bit of fog around the immediate bay the first things first that fog that have to mix out for us to get some sunshine. but once we do that and get some clearing going on, this is the shot of the ground. this is some of the ground fog. we have take care of aloft. however, there are some scattered clouds to make ble. get to that in just a bit. right now, our fog cast just to show you most of the area will clear out before. well, before noon, but we still have that problem area like we did yesterday around san francisco, southern moore. and you can see along the coast there that might yield a somewhat overcast for a little while to about starts to break open a little bit in the

afternoon. but obviously this all going to peel away aloft. we have still some scattered clouds, cause a front in our backyard, which is actually good news because that's going help clean things out. the recent area fires is throwing some particulate matter up there. that means hazy skies for the patches of blue. here's our onshore winds working their magic as well. helping to recur ector climb a little bring it back down again. lot of mid to upper 50's you can see across the region. 61 at this hour for antioch and that compares the kind of a hodgepodge of yesterday's numbers. little warmer, little cooler. your breakdown today where you see the sun come poking out again and breaking out those a fog clouds by noon. we'll have some scattered clouds with this front, some breezy conditions and some hazy skies. but looking at the mid to upper 70's will be some even 80's going on. well, inland looks like a pretty good weekend. i'll have more details on that coming up in a bit, stephanie. all right. looking forward to that. thanks so much, dave. >> in the east bay, it's the last weekend for horse racing at the historic golden gate fields. the track is the last of its kind in the bay area and face scrutiny for repeated

horse deaths over the last several years. trump was lezla gooden reports. >> golden gate fields will open their gates for its final time on sunday. the track is holding races throughout the weekend. on friday, some fans came to experience the track for the nostalgia. i heard it >> i kind buddy need store over here. >> historical track holds memories and family ties for some like samantha fay, a local horse advocate. her grandfather was a mayor of albany when the track first opened in 1941. yeah. when my great grandfather opened golden gate fields in the 1940's, he would also preside over the winner's circle ceremonies in these types of things. and i even have family members that may come out and watch the final race and honor of my great grandfather. but she says the closure is long overdue. calling the treatment of the horses here a tragedy.

i my heart and my mind are both with the horses that we weren't able to save. so golden gate fields kills many courses every year since they announced the closure in july of 2023. >> 19 horses have been killed here according to the california horse racing board. >> that was, of course, death recorded on friday here. samantha says this is why she's been calling for their closure over new horse racing board claims that horse racing deaths in california are decreasing. the rate of deaths is decreasing, but that california public has shown that we see horses as individuals and every single death is a travesty and every single that is not worth entertainment of whatever people believe is happening here. the 140 acre tract is going to be missed by other residents who say the financial impact will be felt if it's not developed into terrible for the city of albany because get almost a

million dollars taxes every year from the owners of the racetrack. so we're going to lose that in our lezla gooden kron. 4 news. the owners of golden gate put out a statement saying, quote, >> the closure and final day of racing at golden gate fields reflects the ongoing and complex economic challenges of the thoroughbred racing industry in california. we've been proud to be part of the 83 year legacy of golden gate fields. we look forward to working with stakeholders to create a sustainable future for racing in california. grocery stores now open san francisco's bayview district for families facing food insecurity. well, a good and spoke with residents. >> the district 10 community market is the first of its kind. the city here, all groceries are free to residents in need located in bay view. the market welcomed over 80 people on wednesday. the market is available to those who live in district 10 and they must meet certain qualifications to shop here.

and the criteria is also that you have some some form of medicare out how fresh, you know, you're low income inequality, 5 for that kind of services. >> and we're also looking for people that really are in need you. you've had a hard time. this is kathy davis, executive director of bayview senior services. and they have been contracted to run the market. kathy says, depending on the success of the market, they could at more days for shoppers. new to this and knew to happen. so many people coming. we've been doing it once a week. now we're going to do it twice a week starting next week. and then by the end the month, we hope to be able 3 weeks 3 times a week. and so we have to gear up and get more food. and longtime neighbor can sondra who is raising her great granddaughter is one of the first people to shop at the market. she tells me it's a relief to have access to fresh food, you know, it helps raise. >> making >> it be able to spend your money on the market will also connect residents to other

social services. >> and it's expected to serve 1500 households a month by this time next year. >> and once we get this up and running and we understand the process and we see how it works, i can see it being replicated other parts of the city and that's a desire. but it also costs money time effort in san francisco. love a good in kron. 4 news. >> in contra costa county, a joint juneteenth and pride parade happens on sunday. the city of kano hosts second annual celebration from noon to 03:00pm at fernandez park. it was started last year by then mayor devin murphy, the current council member was the first block openly and youngest mayor in panels 120 year history. he says this weekend's celebration is about community empowerment and recognizing the historic significance of both juneteenth and pride. live music performances, kids, activities and more will be on hand sunday afternoon. and of course, another event to let you know about today, the city

of san mateo host, their 12th annual pride celebration. that parade starts at 10, 30 this morning at second. and the streets. it ends at central park on 5th avenue in san mateo around 11. and we also have a list of juneteenth celebrations. you can check out in the bay area on our website. just scan that jumbo qr code is going to take you directly to the juneteenth section of kron 4 dot com. and the annual escape from alcatraz triathlon is back this weekend. brave athletes jump into the frigid bay swimming a little under a half mile the sure before running a 5 k race sunday's main event. the full triathlon features a full one and a half mile swim from a boat near alcatraz, a feat which was once thought to be impossible. that is followed by an 18 mile bike ride and an 8 mile run. and if you're more of a competitive eater, it will be food trucks on the marina green today,

along with other less strenuous events to take part something for everybody. the california supreme court ruling allows the university of california to build a new student housing at berkeley's historic people's park. of gayle ong brings us the community reaction. >> it's disappointing. >> i'm a neighbor and a mother. my kid has grown whitney sparks not surprise at the state supreme court's decision to allow uc berkeley to start construction on a student housing project at people's park. the project set off years of protest over the landmark people's park is now surrounded by stacks of shipping containers blocking the view of the park and security guards at every corner. something else, opponents of this project do not want to will be petitioning to get that removed for guard list of this ruling. and even if they want to build construction, they still don't need to have this shipping container all around. in a statement uc berkeley road, it is pleased with thursday's decision adding,

quote. >> the campus is turning its attention to the timeline for resuming construction. we are grateful for the strong and ongoing support this project has received. the campus is committed to addressing the high cost and low supply of housing close to campus that undermine students ability to thrive succeed and fully partake in all that the university has to offer the high court on thursday has ruled that a new law enacted last year invalidates the claims by 2 local organizations that sued the school saying more students living in downtown berkeley would add noise pollution to an already dense area. the court noted that berkeley provides housing to the lowest percentage of students compared to other schools in the uc system. uc berkeley plans to build a 312 million dollar housing complex for about 1100 of its students. the park was founded in 1969. as part of the air is free speech and civil rights movement and for decades served as a gathering space for free meals, community

>> welcome back. taking a live look outside at 7.13 this morning from our mount tam camera. and it's looking a little bit. >> out there. i would say day. what do you think? >> well, there you see the fog layer at the level and then above you price, all little haze going on. so we have those 2 factors. then that fog bank you just saw here. this is underneath the fog bank. here's the east bay shoreline in. it's got us all covered years. we've got 3 little things working on his first things. first got a clear this stuff out and for the bay. that will probably happen well before noon problem. areas at the coast. however, that could be a little tough. and there will be leftover with some scattered clouds from this frontal boundary. but then on top of all of that, that hazy with the right to from the

area fires. here's a look at our temperatures right now. mid to upper 50's line of the east bay shoreline. 61 for this hour. a lot of 50's that. meanwhile up north futurecast for here we go. this clears out pretty nicely. but again, with this front kind of close to us in this moisture here will get again, those kind of variable clouds to scattered will call them on that front. but then at that lower level moisture that's hard to sometimes see on this. that may be problematic at the coast. so it may not be as good a day at the beach today as it will be tomorrow. once this all plays out sunday morning. and yeah, we start off with a few scattered clouds. we open up really nicely again. coast is going to be a problem area. marine layer kind of thickens up a little bit on our monday as we kind of trough out on our temperatures early part of the week, middle part of the week. it goes back our winds. we have a nice clip here. this is good, although it to the surface, this helps kind of clean out our atmosphere a little bit. but the front will do so in some selective spots will have a nice little pop in those afternoon. winds going on today. also into tomorrow.

we see the coverage area up there in solano county. little the contra costa county to through the delta. but direction is good. we like it all on shore. a few clouds, hayes inland highs in the 70's to 80's going on tomorrow. pretty much mostly sunny, nice. we've got that breeze. still with us. 70's and 80's program stays next week. it's sunny with the heat bump expected again. mid-nineties tuesday looks to be the day on that in a doesn't look upstage what we had from this week. 64 san francisco today. we do about 68 for oakland, 79. meanwhile for san jose decenas warm up happening well inland to antioch, up to eighty-four from the north bay santa rosa coming in. 87 there in about 70 for hayward. we're back again to that to mount tam shot. there you have again, the fog hang in here. some haze aloft, 81 tomorrow. and by monday. well, were at 90 as we start the little klein tuesday, winds are from the days watch next week will be mid 90. so going to feel like summer yet again, we're not even near the solstice yet. that's going to be next week or the week after. but it's

another little flavor we've been through. not as bad, not as bad as fortunately, a look >> the fda is reversing an order to remove juul vaping products from store shelves. authorities reached a 462 million dollar settlement with juul for its role in the rise of children. vaping, the change comes nearly 2 years after the federal agency ordered the products be taken off the market. the fda says it changed its mind after a review of information from the company and new case law from recent court decisions. the pressure is mounting for the owners of the radisson hotel in east oakland. last year city found the hotel violated local minimum wage law by and are paying more than 120 workers for nearly a year. now, the city attorney is warning the owners that if payment is not made by later this month, the city will file a lawsuit against them. according to union reps, the workers are owed a total of

more than $400,000. we reached out to the radisson hotel for comments that hotel is set be shut down soon and become verdant to affordable housing. a judge dismisses several state charges against paul pelosi's attacker who was convicted in federal court last month after that federal convictions, state prosecutors brought their own case against david de pap. but his public defender says the state trial represents double jeopardy for dcip app. in response, the judge on thursday dismissed the state charges of attempted murder, elder abuse and assault with a deadly weapon. but the faces charges including false imprisonment, residential burglary and aggravated kidnapping. those charges were not part of the federal trial. the pap has pleaded guilty or other not guilty to all charges. following wednesday's deadly shooting in san francisco's dolores park city supervisor rafael mandelman is asking police to step up presence in

the area. the shooting happened around 10:00pm. police identified a 19 year-old san jose state student as the victim. >> it's you know, this is this is a park that does have some public safety challenges. it is just really pretty safe place and a wonderful place come. we can't live in fear, but people should be aware of their surroundings. >> no suspect description released yet. police are asking anyone with information to please reach out. plus 3 major surgeries and nearly 5w weeks in the hospital, san jose police officer jaime arredondo is finally home police. they posted this video of the officer leaving the medical facility in being shared on by fellow officers as well as mayor matt mahan. the post says the officer still has a long journey ahead of him or john doe was one of 2 officers injured during a shootout last month in the santa teresa neighborhood at a hotel. the other officer was

released from the hospital shortly afterwards. investigators say a domestic violence survivor and her 3 children. >> we're sheltering in that hotel when someone showed up with a weapon, exchanging gunfire with police. that man identified as kevin briones was critically injured in the shooting. no word on his current condition yet. take a look at your screen here. san francisco police are looking for this suspect who may be connected to threats left outside of a home near alamo square. >> the victim told police he found racially offensive items and messages left next to his building on grove and filmore street. and that april that you're watching now is for about that video you're watching knows from april. this is in the longtime black residents hope from 4. he got a package containing a black doll with a news just days before his home burned down last month. you can see that flames going up into the air there. and here's one more look now at that person of

interest. anyone with information is asked to please call police. and the north bay. santa rosa police arrested a woman accused of forging more than 100 identities. police arrested. melissa. good terror is on tuesday. they served a search warrant at her home after she failed to return a rental u haul. and this is what officers found inside stolen id's and for checks, investigators found that here is leased to the vehicle with a fake id. detectives identified a man named mark boy says her co-conspirator police booked both suspects into the sonoma county jail. a 15 year-old was stabbed while tryin to rob a man friday in downtown santa rosa. police say the teen was with 2 other suspects at the santa rosa transit mall around 3 on friday planning to rob a 24 year-old man when attack police say the 24 year-old victim defended himself with a 4 inch kitchen style knife. the 15 year-old was stabbed in

the arm, at least twice in the torso. police accused a group of attempted robbery and being gang members. and fairfield elderly woman and her dog died after their home caught fire overnight. firefighters say they responded to the home on stephen street and learned the woman was trapped in a back bedroom. crews managed to pull the woman out, but she did die at the scene. 2 other people and a cat survives. investigators say the fire appears to be accidental, but they continue to investigate the cause. the largest insurance carrier in the state says it plans to continue coverage for some homeowners with a catch. state farm announced back in march. it would not renew thousands of home insurance policies because of elevated fire risk. but now state farm says it will renew those policies if clients specifically secure fire coverage from the california fair plan. that's a state insurance program for homeowners in high-risk areas. consumer advocates say the

trade group says california fast food restaurant slash nearly 10,000 jobs. >> because of the state's new $20, minimum wage. this as struggling franchises, cut labor costs and raise prices to survive the california business and industrial alliance says several major chains including mcdonald's burger king and in and out increased prices to offset the cost of higher wages. many also cut employee hours and expedited a move to automation. gas prices continue to drop in the bay area. take a look at this. gas prices are $0.11 cheaper than last week. and $0.37 cheaper event last month. the most expensive gas you'll find is in napa county at 5.31, per gallon of regular gas followed

reports from kelly park where the most recent cat was spotted. >> and while the prospect of several mountain lion sightings in the silicon valley just within the last 2 weeks may be scary to some many of the people hiking through kellie park that i talked to say they are concerned about their actually well aware they are entering the habitat. many of these animals. yeah, we're just here just off having some exercise, you know, getting some sign despite the warning of a recent mountain lion sighting, kelly park was full of people getting an early start to the weekend. >> on to the probably more scared of us and them the other way around playing around the disc golf with his friends. levi lucian says he's not worried about seeing a mountain lion now. it definitely makes you think couple times, you know, you're like you hear something in the back on. you're like, oh, what is that? just 24 hours before this diss golf game, mountain lion was spotted at the park. it comes just a day after a mountain lion was spotted several miles south off ella drive and war. admiral way.

>> and before all of these sightings may sot 3 mountain lion sightings. one on the 18th and 2 in milpitas. i feel it's safety concern not only for the public but for everybody that works here, california fish and wildlife say if you do see a mountain lion, stand your ground, do not run. >> tried to appear large maintain eye contact and slowly back away without turning your back and definitely keep a close eye on your pets. >> are you guys gonzalez says she walks at kelly park nearly every day, but the mountain lions don't stop her. i would never be here at especially with them instead, still enjoying her time with her dogs while having a healthy respect for nature. you know, there's more housing being built, though. i think >> creating you know, that sort of situation to happen. >> in san jose, jack moment kron 4 news. >> i'm a. how trained closure happening this weekend. all

service is suspended as the agency tests its new electric fleet. now limited capacity bus service will be offered, but only to the san jose diridon palo alto in millbrae stations. this weekend marks the first tests were 8 electric trains run simultaneously. caltrans says the new fleet will be quicker and quieter than the current diesel trains. >> but this week and goes well, this will be the last weekend shutdown necessary for before electrification. this is going to be the first test of a trains moving simultaneously, which is what the what service is going to look like me launch on september 21st. so this is a big moment. this is all that we know of just one more milestone. we've been hitting really quickly. and really looking forward to getting this one as well. >> and once they launch, caltrans says express trains will make the trip from san francisco to san jose in under an hour shaving about 25 minutes from commute. time. the new trends offer power outlets at each seat, public wi-fi and more storage. plus, new restrooms. former

president donald trump stopped san francisco for a campaign fundraiser earlier this week. this was his first visit to the bay area in 5 years. call for sara stinson brings us the community reaction. >> people spent hours rallying outside of donald trump's fundraiser here in pacific heights trying to get a glimpse of him or even see him before or after the event. but he took a different entrance each time there's not only supporters, but also some people protesting his >> supporters of former president donald trump taking over san francisco's pacific heights and before a campaign fundraiser at the home of tech billionaire david sacks. >> it's also 2 shows that there's a lot more people people think that are behind trump. and that love him and >> want to back the crowd, including people from a short drive away. we live in san

francisco or vote for trump open as well as those as far as to our president. trump commander-in-chief. well, i want to see president trump, roland, you know, i feel like california's neglected by republicans donald trump isn't coming very often. trump's campaign stop follows his conviction on all 34 counts in his new york hush money trial last week. his supporters still on his side. will be exonerated. just remember, you what happened to sets a precedent. a lot of people are trying to say that trump is a felon, but actually it was a kangaroo court in a banana republic. trump protesters also showed up. the felon in chief is visiting some of these people. talk about law and order constantly or kissing up to biggest criminal in the entire country. it's teed civil, but there were some tense moments between the

2 >> the rally began hours earlier in the marina with hundreds of people gathering weaving around their trump flags and wearing their maga hats. tickets to this fundraising reportedly cost $50,000 per person or up to $500,000 per couple. and all of that money raised will go towards trump's efforts to become. >> our next president, i'm sara stinson reporting in san francisco kron. 4 news. >> and the chair of the san francisco democratic party denounced trump's fundraiser in the city nancy time writing in part, quote, people can throw their money away on a convicted felon who cares nothing about the american people. we're actually work with real leaders like joe biden to solve the issues of the day. san francisco democrats look forward to working with president biden for the next 4 years to move san francisco and america forward again. that's from nancy tung, the chair of the san francisco democratic party. and oakland mayor sheng thao is defending her record

today. this after the group looking to recall her said it has enough signatures to force a recall election. the reasons for that recall include losing the oakland a's. the group says along with firing a popular police chief, plus a surge in crime. you tell us as the city is headed in the right direction. no matter what you know, naysayers say or, >> you folks who are trying to recall you know, i think at the end of the day we were able to reduce crime by 33% overall crime across the board, right? we're doing what we know. make sense. we're doing. we're making progress. oakland is turning a corner in lists. reminded many of these issues that started way before my tenure. and so within that short one and a half year that we've been in office, we've done so much already in west oakland, in east oakland. and so i know that we're stronger together and i floor everybody that we should work together to ensure that we have a better and say for oakland for all.

the pulsating activity as we go into sunday as well. that the longer range first, the short term we have these fronts kind of clean things out that will happen. first, we start to get into early next week. here comes on a little heat pump here again. tuesday is probably going to be the hottest day that breaks down ever so slightly. and then is you can see the set up is somewhat reminiscent to what we saw with the big heat spike that we had. but what i'm more concerned about is potentially by next weekend, early the following week, some offshore winds try to develop maybe the sacramento valley and that might be spilling into solano county. maybe napa county's little bit too. that again will be next weekend. wait to see how things come together here. but we start to get warm temperatures and then you start having some offshore winds working anywhere near ya. sometimes some problems can develop. 64 san francisco to the coast will keep it about 60 ish or so 68 for burlingame, big issue as we clear out this fog at the coast, which tomorrow looks more likely. 76 for palo alto in the south bay near 80 upper

again, how clumsy all this scenes in public, former miami marlins president david samson is talking about the latest controversy surrounding the a's new stadium in las vegas. its lease agreement, the a's to propose playing a number of home games outside of vegas. it's totally normal to have that in a lease agreement or in a non relocation agreement. but sampson says these created a mountain out of a molehill by requesting as many as 7 home games outside of vegas. one for is more appropriate. he also called out the a's president. dave carroll for telling a nevada newspaper playing home games elsewhere helps build the team's brand and attract players. it is beyond comprehension how he responded to this. i i really cantt figure out what the business strategy is. what the pr strategy when this provision came up. >> all you have to do is be honest and say, of course, oakland, vegas, as one of 30 teams has to be available to

that, too. but you folks inland, although the things open up still some scattered clouds aloft in the forecast. plus, a little of that haze left over from the recent fires. there's a shot of the east bay shoreline. there you can see that extends all the way up to the hilltop. and as we take a look at the fog cast future here as we get to the future about noon or so still some problem areas of the coast. but everybody clears out, by the way, tomorrow shouldn't be quite the deal. looking at today to some patchy fog to get you started now, what's helping out is a little front or backyard here, although it's going bring some scattered clouds going help kind of clean out our atmosphere a little bit, particularly some of those particulate matter. we have coupled with those onshore winds. they're going to pop this afternoon. but as you can see, nice all onshore. most readings in the 50's right now. 63 antioch, 60 for livermore. and your contrast to 24 hours ago. pretty close. maybe a couple degrees trailing a lot of chunk of the east bay for now. so about 73 at high noon, we'll do about 75 to 3 again, noting some scattered clouds and some hazy sky conditions with that as

right. well, the fda is reversing an order to remove juul vaping products from store shelves. >> authorities reached a 462 million dollar settlement with juul for its role in the rise of children. vaping, the change comes nearly 2 years after the federal agency ordered the products be taken off the market. the fda says it changed its mind after a quote, review of information from the company and a new case law from recent court decisions. pressure is mounting for the owners of the radisson hotel in east oakland. last year city found the hotel violated local minimum wage law by and are paying more than 120 workers for nearly a year. now, the city attorney is warning the owners that if payment is not made by later this month, the city will file a lawsuit against them. according to union reps, the oorkers are owed a total of more than $400,000. we reached out to the radisson hotel for comments that hotel is set to be shut down soon and be converted to affordable housing. a judge dismisses

several state charges against 2 excuse me, paul pelosi's attacker who was convicted in federal court last month after the federal convictions. state prosecutors brought their own case against david de pap, but his public defender says the state trial represents double jeopardy for dcip app. in response, the judge on thursday dismissed the state charges of attempted murder, elder abuse and assault with a deadly weapon. but the pats still faces charges including false imprisonment, residential burglary and aggravated kidnapping. those charges were not part of the federal trial. the path has pleaded not guilty to all charges. following wednesday's deadly shooting in san francisco's dolores park city file mandelman is asking police to step up presence in the area. the shooting happened around 10:00pm. police identified a 19 year-old san jose state student as the victim. >> it's you know, this is this is a part that does have some

public safety challenges. it is just really a pretty safe place and a wonderful place come. we can't live in fear, but people should be aware of their surroundings. >> no substance. no suspect description has been released yet. police are asking anyone with information to please reach out. walker 3 major surgeries and nearly 5 weeks in the hospital. san jose police officer jaime, a redondo is finally home. san jose police say posted this video of the officer leaving the medical facility being cheered on by fellow officers as well as mayor matt mahan. the post says the officer still has a long journey ahead of him. redondo was one of 2 officers injured during a shootout last month at a hotel in a santa teresa neighborhood. the other officer was released from the hospital shortly afterwards. investigators say a domestic violence survivor and her 3 children. we're sheltering in the hotel when someone showed up with a weapon, exchanging gunfire with police. that man identified as kevin briones was critically injured in that

officers found inside stolen id's and forged checks. investigators found a tear as least the vehicle with a fake id. detectives identified a man named mark boys as her co-conspirator police booked both suspects into the sonoma county jail. a 15 year-old was stabbed while trying to rob a man friday in downtown santa rosa. police say the teen was with 2 other suspects at the santa rosa transit mall around 3 friday planning to rob a 24 year-old man attacked. police say the 24 year-old defended himself with a four-inch kitchen stole knife. the 15 year-old was stabbed in the arm, at least twice in the torso. the group is accused of attempted robbery and being gang members. in fairfield, an elderly woman and her dog died after their home caught fire overnight. firefighters say they responded to the property on stephen street and learned the woman was trapped in a back bedroom. crews managed to pull out the woman but she died at the scene. 2 other

people and a cat survived. investigators say the fire appears to be accidental, but they continue to investigate the cause. the largest insurance carrier in our state says it plans to continue coverage for some homeowners with homeowners, rather with a catch estate far announced back in march, it would not renew thousands of home insurance policies because of elevated wildfire risk. but now state farm says it will renew those policies if clients specifically secure fire coverage from the california fair plan. that's a state insurance program for homeowners in high-risk areas. consumer advocates say the move eases some panic, but it's not a long-term solution. >> people who are loyal. >> to state farm is going to be great this is the insurance company you want to be with. then this is a helpful piece of news, but it's going you're going to still be paying more. and now you're going to have to have to policies and said >> she added. she understand state farm has been nervous

>> all right. good morning. welcome back to the kron. 4 morning news. it is 8.29 this saturday. let's get you started this half hour with a look. >> your forecast with dave. hey, good morning, stephanie. good morning, everybody. and that we're dealing with this fog this morning to get things started a little cooler. of course, it will be then from last week that will be some welcome news. and we're continuing with onshore wind program. so that's all going to work in tandem for a nice mild weekend. least temperature wise going on here. here's a look at sfo. only minor delays due to construction, that sort of thing. but you do see a little bit of that fog bank. >> let's try inland here a little bit. san jose state. well, there you can see kind of the mid-level clouds going on here. we're going to see some of those scattered clouds throughout the day, coupled with some hazy sky conditions. again because of the smoke. now, here's a look at that front that we mentioned today for today. tomorrow with its passage, it helps clean out our atmosphere a little bit. that's going bring us some scattered clouds again. temperatures will be on the mild side. we've got almost about 60 going on for the east

cloud cover kind overcast thing at the coast for a few more hours until we get to the afternoon. we're probably break some of that up. the tahoe forecast looking sunny and warming up. we're definitely in the summer motive at this. 84 come tuesday, idea the direction we're going in and that's going to happen in the home front as well. so the players that we're looking at, first of all this front in our backyard. this is kind of a good guys going help kind of clean out our skies a little bit in the process is going to throw some scattered clouds. that's going to be part of the ride today. not just the fog, but the scattered clouds aloft, but also that will help take out some of that particulate matter as well. the winds at the surface, they're working their magic too on shore for the most part, little bit coming from the south and some spots there. well, inland. and we see the typical afternoon evening pop occur. most notable around the carquinez strait longer range forecast. the system plays out the cleanup job. then we go into the warm-up job. that's right. that will be in the monday into tuesday. maybe lingering a little bit on wednesday. that starts to break down in that. an interesting scenario

sets up here with yet another high out to sea. we may see some winds return potentially in the sacramento valley being offshore. that would be next weekend and into the following week a little bit. this is way up there and these things can change a little bit here. but that's not great. if we get an offshore wind event there. meanwhile, the 4 zone forecast today looks like 64 san francisco to the coast around 60. burlingame at 68. looks like we'll do about a 60 foster city mid 70's down in this pocket. palo alto in the south bay round 80 getting close. 79 san jose cupertino about 80 east bay shoreline, lower 70's, but clearly be coupled from tri valley where we're approaching near about 80 81 livermore. 76 danville and 77 walnut creek. 66 berkeley, the laos, 67, 80 coming in at fairfield. 76 napa and we'll do an 87 for santa rosa. so while we may not see a lot of movement going on for this weekend, it will start to move as we get into early next week. again, that front's got to play through tuesday's the big day

to get near the mid 90's backing off a little bit into the weekend. but again, we'll be watching those winds as we get into next weekend. the following week. >> okay. all right. fingers crossed. yes. stay call. yes. that's what we want all right. thanks a lot, dave. well, there's yet another controversy involving the a's this time over how many home games the team will play in that new yet to be built and still to be financed stadium in las vegas. kron four's dan kerman has the latest. >> this is actually extremely normal. what is shocking me is again, how clumsy all this scenes in public, former miami marlins president david samson is talking about the latest controversy surrounding the a's new stadium in las vegas. its lease agreement, the a's to propose playing a number of home games outside of vegas. it's totally normal to have that in a lease agreement or in a non relocation agreement. but sampson says these created a mountain out of a molehill by requesting as many as 7

home games outside of vegas. one for is more appropriate. he also called out the a's president. dave carroll for telling a nevada newspaper playing home games elsewhere helps build the team's brand and attract players. it is beyond comprehension how he responded to this. i i really can't figure out what the business strategy is. what the pr strategy when this provision came up. >> all you have to do is be honest and say, of course, oakland, vegas, as one of 30 teams has to be available to play games internationally. so we have to work that into the least period. and that's literally would be the end of the discussion or taken games away. >> from yourepublic and you haven't even played there yet. i don't know what the logic is. former a's executive andy dolan says whatever the intent the a's have made a bad pr move, especially when it comes to attracting new fans in las vegas. what people are reading those that might not be big.

the stadium authority will only grant them for every other year. dan kerman kron, 4 news. >> the alameda city council stopped a controversial climate project aimed at fighting global warming. it would have involved scientists injecting salt into the clouds. scientists say the salt would brighten the clouds, increasing the reflection of sunlight and therefore reducing the amount of heat absorbed by the water below plans to start those experiments in alameda had been in the works since earlier this year under the supervision of scientists from the university of washington. but the city intervene this week. >> staff and in the city didn't know anything about these experiments until we learned about it from new york times article that the experiment began and that was in late march of this year. so after hearing from concerned residents, i and i'm sure my colleagues reached out to our city manager and said what if we know about this? and the answer was nothing.

well in the lower 50's. stephanie. all right, dave, thank you. >> in the east bay, it's the last weekend for horse racing at the historical dunn gave fields. the track is the last of its kind in the bay area and faced scrutiny for repeated horse deaths over the last several years. kron four's lezla gooden reports. >> golden gate fields will open their gates for its final time on sunday. the track is holding races throughout the weekend. on friday, some fans came to experience the track for the nostalgia. i heard it >> i got buddy live. we need store over here. >> historical track holds memories and family ties for some like samantha fay, a local horse advocate. her grandfather was a mayor of albany when the track first opened in 1941. yeah. when my great grandfather opened golden gate fields in the 1940's, he would also preside

over the winner's circle ceremonies in these types of things. and i even have family members that may come out and watch the final race and honor of my great grandfather. but she says the closure is long overdue. calling the treatment of the horses here a tragedy. i my heart and my mind are both with the horses that we weren't able to save. so golden gate fields kills many courses every year since they announced the closure in july of 2023. >> 19 horses have been killed here according to the california horse racing board. >> that was, of course, death recorded on friday here. samantha says this is why she's been calling for their closure over new horse racing board claims that horse racing deaths in california are decreasing. the rate of deaths is decreasing, but that california public has shown that we see horses as individuals and every single death is a travesty and every single that is not worth entertainment of whatever people believe is happening here. the 140 acre tract is

to build a new student. housing at berkeley's historic people's park. kron four's gayle ong has the reaction. >> it's disappointing. >> i'm a neighbor and a mother. my kid has grown and that's our whitney sparks. not surprised at the state supreme court's decision to allow uc berkeley to start construction on a student housing project at people's park. the project set off years of protest over the landmark people's park is now surrounded by stacks of shipping containers blocking the view of the park and security guards at every corner. something else, opponents of this project do not want to will be petitioning to get that removed for guard list of this ruling. and even if they want to build construction, they still don't need to have this shipping container all around. in a statement uc berkeley road, it is pleased with thursday's decision adding, quote. >> the campus is turning its attention to the timeline for resuming construction. we are grateful for the strong and ongoing support this project has received. the campus is committed to addressing the high cost and low supply of

housing close to campus that undermine students ability to thrive succeed and fully partake in all that the university has to offer the high court on thursday has ruled that a new law enacted last year invalidates the claims by 2 local organizations that sued the school saying more students living in downtown berkeley would add noise pollution to an already dense area. the court noted that berkeley provides housing to the lowest percentage of students compared to other schools in the uc system. uc berkeley plans to build a 312 million dollar housing complex for about 1100 of its students. the park was founded in 1969. as part of the air is free speech and civil rights movement and for decades served as a gathering space for free meals, community gardening and art projects and was used by the un house. it's not just about housing is also about the environment and green space. it's about history. >> and a community gathering space.

>> all right. welcome back. taking a live look outside at the golden gate bridge on this saturday morning. >> hello, karl. haha. >> they are sticking around for us this morning. at least at this hour, 9.13, day. i mean, it doesn't really look like summer when you look at this right now maybe the stolen construction there and still building the tower, something there's no telling us for whatever. now it's buried by the fog. you get that part, right? and that's one of the problem areas. but look, >> it's starting to kind of a road a little bit, the east bay shoreline week, at least make it out and we have to lift it to give us overcast. and then as the mix again, one of the issues that's fighting through is yes, it is drier upstairs, big time. so, but it's also warmer as well. we've got a pretty big inversion to get over. very typical for us. but this one here as the warmer air. and

that's a little bit more problematic because that's much less dense. and it's hard with this cold air to get this to rise a bit, too. so that's the problem issue. although dry air does tend to be more dense, though, too, east bay shoreline. 63 for hayward, 58 for oakland inland. you've got a lot of 60's working there. 59 at the santa rosa will make up for that this afternoon. those 64 for san jose futurecast for after the fog is all said and done. there are some scattered clouds aloft and really for the whole week. ahead up in the mountains, there's a stray possibility of a shower, firing up a typical daytime heating. that's pretty much of a singsong event that happens during the summer months. anyway. and the tahoe forecast doesn't appear very likely over the next few days. maybe latter portion of the week. and then as you see in the sunday, we're still left over some of these scattered clouds from this front. good news is it's kind of cleaning up this particulate matter a little bit from the recent fires. so that's kind of good news on that front. then we set up for yes, the fog back again on monday. but we set up for another little he pump getting here monday tuesday zone.

there's our service winds working onshore. they pop in the afternoon. that's all good. good, good. but come next weekend, we might be seeing some offshore winds developing far to the east off to the sacramento valley. here's the breakdown for you. if you clouds and haze for the afternoon that is inland highs, 70's to 80 ish or so going on. sfo, fog bank there. they got about a half-hour delay unrelated to that tomorrow, mostly sunny, nice, breezy and all that stuff will repeat the 70's and 80's next week. let's turn the heat up. it looks like by tuesday, the hot day with middle 90's at work. we've been passed that already. but sunny with that heat pump will not called a heat spike and then it breaks down towards the end of the weekend. that's the next thing to look out for the winds and what 31 64 san francisco today about a 68 for oakland, 79, san jose there some 80's middle 80's, a saint rose up to about 87 and hayward. meanwhile, about a 70's you can see the influence from those winds working. they're coming in from the coast. lower 80's work for this

city found the hotel violated local minimum wage law by and are paying more than 120 workers for nearly a year. now, the city attorney is warning the owners that if payment is not made by later this month, the city will file a lawsuit against them. according to union reps, the workers are owed a total of more than $400,000. we reached out to the radisson hotel for comment. the hotel is set to shut down soon and be converted to affordable housing. a judge dismisses several state charges against paul pelosi's attacker who was convicted in federal court last month after the federal convictions. state prosecutors brought their own case against david de pap. but his public defender says the state trial represents double jeopardy for dcip app. in response, the judge on thursday dismissed the state charges of attempted murder, elder abuse and assault with a deadly weapon but the pats still faces charges including false imprisonment, residential burglary and aggravated

days before his home burned down last month. is one more look at that person of interest. anyone with information is asked to please call police. >> in the north, a santa rosa police arrested a woman accused of forging more than 100 identities. police arrested melissa gutierrez on tuesday. they served a search warrant at her home after she failed to return a rented u haul. and this is what officers found inside stolen id's and forged checks. investigators found that hair as least the vehicle with a fake id. detectives identified a man named mark boys as her co-conspirator police booked both suspects into the sonoma county jail. a 15 year-old was stabbed while trying to rob a man friday in downtown santa rosa. police say the teen was with 2 other suspects at the santa rosa transit mall around 3 on friday planning to rob a 24 year-old man when police arrest rather when attack police say the 24 year-old defended himself with a

four-inch kitchen style knife. the 15 year-old was stabbed in the arm aleastwice in the torso. the group is accused of attempted robbery and being members. in fairfield, an elderly woman and her dog died after their home caught fire overnight. firefighters yhey responded to the home on stephen street and learned the woman was trapped in a back bedroom. crews mano pull out the woman but she died at the scene. 2 othere and a cat survived. investigators say the fire appears to be accidental, but they continue to investigate the cause. the largest insurance carrier in the state says it plans to continue coverage for some homeowners with a catch. state farm announced back in march. it would not renew thousands of home insurance policies because of elevated wildfire risk. but now state farm says it will renew those policies if clients specifically secure coverage from the california fair plan. but the state insurance program for homeowners in high-risk areas. consumer advocates say the
