the verdict is in in the criminal trial of hunter biden. jury found the president's son guilty of 3 federal felonies related to buying a gun while addicted to drugs. beer-temple reports on the conviction. >>hunter biden walked out of a courtroom holding the first lady's hand. a delaware jury found him guilty of lying about his drug use when he bought a gun in 2018 special counsel david weiss spoke after the conviction. no one in this country is above the law. prosecutors showed the jury text messages about drug dealers and played audio of hunters own memoir describing drug use. this case was not just about addiction. this case was about the illegal choices defendant made while in the throes of addiction. the defense argued hunter didn't consider himself an addict at the time the president said in a statement he accepts the outcome of the case and went on to say, quote, i am the president, but i'm also a dad. jill, and i love our son. and we're so proud of the man he is today.

hunter biden also released a statement saying he's grateful for his family support during the trial, but quote, disappointed by the outcome he faces up to 25 years in prison, but it might not be that long. syracuse university law professor lauren golden says sentencing guidelines for first-time offenders are shorter potentially a year or 2 in prison. >>but the guidelines are just recommendations for judges so judges can take into account other circumstances. republicans have largely supported the verdict. we think that this is a long day. incoming democratic congressman jamie raskin says you won't see democrats respond like republicans did after former president trump's conviction. you don't hear a single peep out of any democrats in that white. we believe in the rule of law. hunter biden's lawyer says they'll pursue all legal challenges available in washington. i'm maddie beer-temple. >>a sentencing date for hunter biden has not been set yet. and the judge said that could be about another 4 months out.

and on it from the state of california says the vta in the south bay needs to be more transparent and find new ways to bring in money. it comes as vta is looking to expand to new projects throughout san jose, including a connector to the bart stations in north san jose kron four's jack moment has more. >>well, member mark berman out of menlo park is the lawmaker who requested the audit to be done on the vta. it focuses on the agency's leadership project management and the way the vta makes its money. >>now the audit done on the vta brought up several recommendations. one of them was to improve communication within the vta. >>about big projects it has in the works just as an example, the audit cited one of the project's costs increased by 24% from the start of the project to the end of it because of the lack of

communication. it also says while the bts finances are good, it should move away from its primary funding of a sales tax. the audit says the vta currently gets 60% of its funding from sales taxes, but says bowden kumble diminished by the 2030's. now the biggest point of contention came with the auditors saying the vta must be more transparent when selecting directors for its port. one example was that a group of mayors selecting a director for its board did not host this election process to the public. the state auditor says new laws would need to be formed to increase transparency and the vta. now, despite the vta disagreeing with the audit saying it needs to be more transparent when selecting members are explored. the vta did say in an email about audits just like this one are useful as the vta is looking to continue expanding with bigger projects into the future reporting in san jose jack moment. kron 4 news. >>drama and frustration are

intensifying at the state capitol as republican and democratic leaders accuse each other of playing politics over the issue of fighting retail theft. capitol correspondent eytan wallace reports. some lawmakers are now threatening to pull support from a package of retail theft bills. >>now they're trying to poison the system. >>shame on them. republican assembly member tom lackey not holding back in blasting democratic leadership in the legislature for proposing amendments to a package of bills that up until now, both republicans and democrats have supported to tackle the issue of retail theft. among the 14 bills in the package include the retail theft reduction act. it would add a penalty up to 3 years in prison for someone found to have stolen property with the intent to resell another bill would expand the california highway patrol property crimes task force are confident that these bills moving forward are going make a meaningful difference for the state. but the bills do not propose to overturn

prop. 47 passed by california voters in 2014, the law changed certain nonviolent crimes from felonies to misdemeanors, including theft when the items stolen are valued at less than $950. >>while supporters have long argued the law will help reduce california's prison population and lead to criminal justice reform opponents to this day say it emboldened criminals to take part in certain crimes like retail theft, with little to no punishment. >>47 has been an unmitigated disaster for the state of california leading to rapid theft. >>and drug use across the state, eldorado county district attorney vern pierson agrees with that assessment as part of a coalition behind an effort to qualify a ballot measure this november to make changes to prop 47 changes that include more drug treatment and more penalties for repeat retail thieves. i'm very confident it will pass and very confident it will help. but democratic leadership, including governor gavin newsom are opposed to the effort to change prop 47

this week democratic leaders confirmed they are proposing amendments to the legislature's retail theft bills that would cancel 11 of the 14 bills if voters approved the ballot initiative making changes to prop 47, these amendments are necessary. >>as i just mentioned, the framework of this package of bills that conflicts with this proposed initiative they don't work together. but pearson says he sees no evidence of that. it's silly. the cut. there is no competent. republicans believe democrats authored the amendments to confuse voters and defeat the initiative to change prop 47. this is how democrat responded to that allegation. some hogwash. we added in upper bility class to these bills to help ensure. >>that if these bills will be put into law, ballot initiative also goes into effect. we don't have a world-class mask of conflicting policies. they're playing games. we need both of these things we should be saying this either or we should be saying is both so that we can actually get on top of the real issue and i'm told the amendments will formally be added to the

a teacher and her husband are embarking on a 2 month long biking trip to san francisco from appleton, wisconsin, this summer to encourage students to stay active and to raise money for their schools, inclusive playground. samantha paterson has the story. >>so what how has been a teacher at highlands

as we know, opioid addictions can be a real problem, especially among young people. and now doctors at valley medical center are offering 18 detox program to help young people break their addictions. kron four's noelle bellow has more. >>the program has already treated about 70 patients since its inception in 2021, the pediatrician behind it. doctor lee trope says the voluntary program can be difficult, but in many cases, life changing the program is for patients under the age of 20. they undergo 24 to 48

hours of supervised care at the valley medical center as they experience withdrawal symptoms there then offered rehab or outpatient care. doctor trump says most patients have made it through the process, but not all of them. she also says some patients have come back more than once. >>we've had several patients who are back in schools. one of them is in school to become a nurse based on our program. some of them are back at work. we've had many success stories, but the process is not always linear. this is a relaxing and remitting disease process. >>the number to call is there on your screen. if you need help during their withdrawal period, patients are put on medication like suboxone r buprenorphine which helps to decrease withdrawal symptoms. prevent cravings and ultimately saves lives. doctor trope wants the public to know when ever they're ready to get help. the doors are open. 24 7. >>street vendors stand off

against san bernardino county leaders over their effort to target illegal curbside food operations. they say the county is putting a half million dollars towards that effort. but as shelby nelson reports, the bettors believe that money could be put to better use. >>that's right. and the san bernardino county board of supervisors voted unanimously to approve that budget, which that group was fighting against. outside the covington chambers in san bernardino as the county's board of supervisors weighed the budget for the 2024. 25 fiscal year. several people rallied to prevent its approval because of what it means for illegal street vending within that budget, we found that they want to allocate over $400,000. >>to the creation of an illegal street vending program and x or within the budget proposal mentions the designation of nearly $500,000 toward additional enforcement

doctors valley medical center are trying to get the word out about a program to help young people deal with opioid addiction. this comes amid an anticipated increase in fentanyl overdoses by youth during the summer months. kron four's charles clifford has the details.

>>as we all know, opioid addictions can be a real problem, especially amongst young people. and these days, illicit opioids are often laced with fentanyl, which can be deadly in very small amounts here in the south bay, the santa clara valley medical center is trying to get the word out that they have a program to help young people break their addictions. if you or your child struggling with opioid addiction, there is hope. we're here to help doctor lee trope is a pediatrician at valley medical center in san jose in 2021, she helped set up a program at the hospital to help young people up to the age of 20 break. their opioid addictions. it's a voluntary program where patients are admitted to the hospital and spend 24 to 48 hours and are supervised care while they go through withdrawal symptoms, which can be extremely difficult. we manage their withdrawal symptoms and safely start them on a medication called suboxone or buprenorphine >>and this medication, like i said, prevents cravings, decreases, withdraw and saves

>>well, member mark berman out of menlo park is the lawmaker who requested the audit to be done on the vta. it focuses on agency's leadership project management and the way the vta makes its money. >>now the audit done on the vta brought up several recommendations. one of them was to improve communication within the vta. >>about big projects it has in the works just as an example. the audit cited one of the project's costs increased by 24% from the start of the project to the end of it because of the lack of communication. it also says while the bts finances are good, it should move away from its primary funding of a sales tax. the audit says the vta currently gets 60% of its funding from sales taxes, but says bowden kumble diminished by the 2030's. now the biggest point of contention came with the auditors saying the vta must be more transparent when selecting directors for its
