for their first debate ahead of the election kron 4, sarah stinson has the highlights. >> 5 candidates took to the stage here at sydney, goldstein, theater and hayes valley to duke it out with one another and convince voters why they would make the best. next. mayor of san francisco tickets sold out for the first san francisco mayoral debate wednesday night. the debate was hosted by manny's and city arts and lectures the candidates supervisor ahsha safai. e. >> former mayor and supervisor mark farrell, philanthropist, daniel lurie, mayor london breed and supervisor aaron peskin with each candidate answering questions about key issues in the city. more than 800 overdose deaths were recorded last year. more than 80% involving fentanyl. each candidate. explain what they would do to prevent more deaths. we need to aggressively arrest and prosecute fentanyl dealers as mayor, i will declare fentanyl state of emergency. >> it will allow us to pass a state and federal government for additional funds to allow

them to bring in additional law enforcement. we're spending 700 million dollars a year on our behavioral health system. we've skewed so heavily to harm reduction, which i believe part of the continuum of caught care. it's very important, but we forgot about building the bats and treating people. >> there is no other mayor in any major city in this country that is doing what i am doing with the various services that we are doing in order to help combat this issue. and we are seeing improvements in our city walk the beat with the captain of the tender line the other day. and he said a lot of our resources are going into the downtown. if you want to stop the drug trade, you've got to get the officers on the street. you have to address a drug dealer. candidates also described how they would make city streets safer for visitors and residents. my plan for public safety. >> i believe we need new police chief. i believe we need to restore the budget of our police department inside of city hall are seeing one of the lowest crime rates we've seen in 10 years and that

crime rate is continuing to trend to this very day, including. >> a 50% reduction right here today in car break-ins. we a fully staffed police department. most of the officers in my district know the shopkeepers in the residents on their beats many of them by name. doesn't just keep people safe. it makes them feel safe. but what's been missing has been the leadership and the investment to recruit. if you don't invest in the recruitment budget, you can't go out and get officers and all the other public safety personnel that we need. so how did voters feel after the debate tonight? how? >> a lot. because i really had no idea who i was going vote for. so it helped a lot my opinion might have changed. and i kind of staff i think it is. he was pretty solid guy. but aaron peskin did pretty well. but i still like london i'm sarah stinson reporting in san francisco kron. 4 news. >> thank you, sarah. will all 5 candidates will meet again for another debate next monday

night? in fact, our own theresa stasi is going to be moderating that one. the debate is being put on by the san francisco democratic county central committee. it's scheduled to start at 7.30. that will be at the university of california college of law in san francisco. it is free and open to the public and we will, of course, be streaming it on kron it's 604. in the east bay. the oakland city council agrees to sell their share. >> of the coliseum. yeah. they sold it to the african american sports and entertainment group who plan on revitalizing the area. kron four's michael thomas following the story for us out in oakland, michael. >> hey, good morning, everyone will this sale is about 105 million dollars and it's set to bring a variety of different things to the city of oakland, from entertainment to the possibility of affordable housing. take a look. this is general video. we've got up on your screen as they break it all down. now, the oakland city council unanimously agreed to sell its 50% interest in the coliseum complex to the african american sports and entertainment group in the sale. price is 105 million

dollars and it will essentially pave the way to transform the site into a sports and entertainment destination with new businesses, along with open public space and parks. the deal also requires that a significant portion of any future resident units be designed as affordable housing. however, the a's still have their half of interest and have yet to oakland city officials believe the stale will help in multiple ways by maximizing economic, social and cultural benefits for everyone in the oakland community. now back out here live as we get more details the finalization of this sale and what the future may hold specifically as far entertainment locations destinations in choir will continue to keep you did reach out this morning. tucson city council members to see if they have any details to give us. so we'll keep you updated. but that's very latest here in oakland and michael thomas story. and j mes, we'll send it back to you. all right. thanks a lot, michael 606, is that i'm former employee of

the alameda county district attorney's office now has filed a lawsuit against. >> pamela price, the da and the county alleging racial discrimination, wrongful termination and retaliation. this comes as price faces a recall election this november crowd dan kerman has details. >> alameda county district attorney pamela price is former spokesperson is suing her for racial discrimination. beardsley is her predecessors. were. there were also asian. there was a lot of mistreatment and inconsistent conduct and the way that those folks were treated their water act comments that you not stayed in the workplace. in the lawsuit, former price employee patti lee alleges price told her that her enemies with the media and the asians. in a statement, police said i have never been subjected to such humiliating and bullying behavior in the workplace. it is unacceptable in any professional environment. but when the perpetrator is a public official who claims to be a

civil rights advocate. it is unconscionable. office doesn't seem like the kind of office that we would be proud of having the district attorney right. but lee's attorney nick roxboro says racial discrimination is only part of the problem. lee is also suing price in the county for wrongful termination and retaliation. you know, fire people for doing the right thing. you don't fire people for protecting the purse those allegations stem pamela price news conference, a november 29th of last year when a reporter for the berkeley scanner was refused entrance that led to a flurry of california public records act requests requiring the da's office to turn over records relating to that incident. lee was the one required together that material. but the lawsuit says when she tried to the alameda county district attorney chose instead to hide elite and change the records when she refused to sign off on those records. the lawsuit says lee was fired, you know,

do those sort of things. that's not your job. you're there to fight crime in fighting crime a serious business. producing documents. wherever the chips may fall. whatever they say, whatever you did wrong, you let them out. that's we all make mistakes. but when you try to cover it up and you ask somebody who's public informational, sir. to join you, cover up and she refuses and find her. that's not what we're about. a spokesperson for pamela price says the da's office cannot comment on litigation on personnel matters. dan kerman kron, 4 news. >> it's 608, and police in berkeley are warning about an increase in vehicle burglaries and thefts. specifically targeting hondas tuesday night alone. at least 7. >> cars were burglarized or of stolen. and the majority of those were honda civics where honda accords, 4 people stealing the airbag out of the steering wheel in the vehicle.

today, the california public utilities commission host a public forum. they're going to be talking up about a proposed water rate hike in san jose. the san jose water company wants to increase rates by 7.5 2% next year and 3.9, 6% in 2026. on top of that, another 4.4 per 6 would be coming in 2027 customers of the water company are going to be able to talk directly with the cpu c at 02:06pm. they'll be an online meeting on their website. >> still ahead on the kron, 4 morning news police in oakland making a number of arrests in connection with more than a half dozen burglaries and robberies. plus condemned homes in the bay area are being seen as a valuable investment for some find out why. and san francisco's public safety cameras are early are seen early results. we'll tell you what fficials are saying about that. and we are looking at a day today

anxious to hear the forecast. it's a good one to talk about today. nothing out there. that sounds too terribly hot or too terribly cold for that matter. >> we're looking out there right in the south bay with sunshine overhead. beautiful sunrise earlier for you. lot of us closer to the bayshore as well as the mouth of the golden gate have been seeing a lot of that low gray having swept on in. that's applying to the east bay in the north bay 2 and a side of that ocean. cool there. that relentlessly pushed right into the bay yesterday and now is making presence known after what is a great morning, mostly sunny anddstill warm conditions this afternoon. but a whole lot more comfortable than we had been. no heat advisories left for northern california. we just saw the last remaining ones for the central valley expiring moments ago. so we are looking at a smooth sailing forecast ahead of us level into the weekend. winds will be a little bit of a catch towards the coastline. a little blustery out there. but that's that ac turned back on across the bay and it's doing its job. keeping us a lot cooler

50's to 60's for your daytime highs in sf as well as at the coastline and then a lot of 60's to 70's elsewhere along the bay shore and 80's still hanging on for inland areas as well as the south bay with san jose. at 82 for your daytime high today, livermore 83 way more comfortable than your triple digits a few days ago while oakland up to richmond in the 60's concord at 78 antioch are very warm. a spot in our only area in the mid 80's today is going to be the coolest one of this week's forecast as tomorrow. we actually do see temperatures bumping up a few degrees the weekend we level back out in the mid 80's that the warmest in mid 70's along the bay. we kind of stay that way for much of next week. great. all right. on the eve of light across the bay except around in livermore. >> that an accident 5.80, westbound as you're traveling into livermore. there. and if you are heading for livermore to dublin can take about 15 minutes because that slow stretch that we're seeing there. but other highways like

5, 86, 80, even the bay bridge, not seen major issues. about 17 minutes traveling into the city right now. all hildreth still remains under 14. 13 minute right? well, one of the south bay at the limit. 29 minutes. 85 menlo park 2, 80 82. all look good. 2.37, not tracking major issues shutdown to milpitas. just 23 minutes. not even seen traffic starting to build in hayward yet. darya. james, back to you. >> thank you very much. rain is 6.16, the time in the east bay. a deadly crash closed down all northbound lanes of interstate 80 near fremont boulevard in fremont. you see it on the map. the chp reported the crash shortly after 10 officials say a 56 year-old man from newark was killed. the agency's incident report indicates the collision involved at least 2 cars, including a tesla. >> and south and 19 year-old woman is dead. she was killed in a multi-vehicle crash that

happened tuesday night around 9, 31, 1 just south cochran road in morgan hill. she was riding a motorcycle and that share her bike collided with a kia. she ended up dying. the kia was actually stopped on the highway because of an earlier crash. we don't know the victim's name. more than 600 acres of county open space along the last honest ridge line between concord and pittsburgh are going to be built on. they'll be somehow says they're now the contra costa, local agency formation commission just approved a request to do this in a 606 acres of undeveloped ridgeline would be developed with 1500 market rate homes. it's going to be called the for south west hills annexation project. it has been the heart of controversy with environmentalists concerned about wildlife and the impact of housing in the area. but the city. and cited that the

there's affordable housing in that area that is needed. we don't know when the project will begin. well, the brentwood city council has approved a new housing development project. it will be an open space. >> at the lone tree way right across from the brentwood community center. the planning commission had 2 recommendations on the number of units to be built. 37 40. understand the new housing will have 40 single-family homes, including for affordable units. well, happening today, local leaders will be gathering for the grand opening ceremony of a new affordable housing project. there. acts, cherry hill apartments will have 55 affordable units, including a community health clinic operated by la clinic. our luck clinica de la raza on ground the ground floor. oakland mayor sheng thao councilmember treva reid and other city leaders will be in attendance. the grand opening starts at 11 o'clock this morning on international boulevard and 90th 19 and condemned homes. >> have been quite attractive for home buyers in the bay

area because the land is so valuable. the supplies dwindling. so is that these are very special circumstances where you have larger lots, you know, half acre in that range. >> you're going to be a special buyer that's able to to see what's possible there and have the capacity to make something happen. it just really speaks to the fact that there's been incredible demand and need for housing opportunities in the bay area. and we just haven't kept up with the supply to meet that demand. so there there's an explanation about how investors are getting creative. they are purchasing. >> run down, tear downs properties like this one in san jose that we told you about earlier in the week and then they are, you know, if you pay 700 grand for this one, for example, then they're building on that and coming out on top in the senate are living in an area that they otherwise wouldn't be able afford home if it wer new and ready roll 6.20, is the time right now. and other news that we're following this morning in the east bay, the oakland city council has unanimously

agreed to sell its 50% interest in the coliseum. as we told you, that is going to the african american sports and entertainment group. but just last night, got the approval since moving on now it's 105 million dollars sale and they're going to, as you've probably heard transform it into an entertainment destination with open spaces and housing as well. and it does require actually part of the deal is they have to have so residential units there that are affordable. here's the hitch. as you know, still have half of their interest that they own in the coliseum and they have yet to sell that. so we're going to keep following when they get approval on that part. but a little this part of choirs, a lot of the land, not the actual borrow ball park area so the city can go ahead with that work. >> well, an east bay restaurant owner now asking for help this morning after a fire destroyed her company. so that massive fire tore through the lake chabot public market

we're back at 6.24. another covid surge could be coming to the bay area. the california department of public health is reporting higher virus levels in san francisco's wastewater are also alerting the public of may not always associate with covid. >> we've been seeing more a typical sentence as more people get being moved. no eyes. yeah. and you know, it's money in the hospital recently

next month. today, thousands of santa clara county doctors and nurses will rally to prevent the closure of the regional medical center in san jose. the trauma center at the san jose hospital set to close on august. 20th. and those that are rallying say that it provides essential care lifesaving facility. procedures, for example, for heart attack and stroke victims and employees have said that they already got their layoff notices. they're going to present petitions to state leaders to try to prevent the closure. the rally is 11, 30 this morning at the regional medical center on north jackson avenue. >> well, happening today, first lady jill biden will land in the bay area for a campaign fundraiser. she's also set to speak at a political finance event in los gatos tomorrow. so know that that's happening this week. last time she here was windy. see, the wind was yesterday as windy, but today not so much. >> all right. coming up next on the kron, 4 morning news, a san jose elementary school aide is accused now.

the bay area today shouldn't be windy at the coastline, but it is still going to be a breezy one for sure for some spots, especially where that cool coastal air that is in the form of that low stratus you're seeing here pushes a right into the bay. that's mother nature is a cpa, though. and some of us were just standing right in front of the air conditioning. it seems like 40's to 50's for most of our current temperatures. brentwood, you're sitting at 60 degrees are obvious warm spot here on the map. there are some visibility issues in the hillsides, the north bay. but for most of us, we're looking up at the gray rather than driving through it. winds are definitely calmer this morning. they were at points yesterday, but we'll pick up a little bit towards the late afternoon as more is that cool ocean air sweeps on through now. right now the sfo is actually getting some good sunshine and temperatures will be in the 70's to 80's later on today. mostly low 80's at the warmest rain. all right. on the eve of that. well, track lee are tracking a traffic fatality. >> this is a backup along fine, 80 westbound livermore. so you can see how the lanes are shut down there. if you

are traveling in that area right now, definitely. if you're trying maneuver and get around those delays, i would say for street could be a good option for you right now. so traveling into dublin, first street and you can hop on eighty-four and take that way. the back of his 54 minutes. if you try to stay on 5.80, we do have crews on the way to the scene right now. really the biggest issue that we have currently on your bridges in your highways, 17 minute ride as you're traveling into the city. no accidents or delays. there. 14 minutes on the san mateo bridge, richmond fell just short of 14 and the golden gate. 37 of the tulsa, 19 minutes starting. james, back to you. thanks. a lot of rain. a 6.31, a new public safety tool is helping the city of san francisco battle crime. yeah, and we're taking we're should say about the new automated license plate reader cameras that have been going up throughout the city. >> we've been following this story and kron four's lezla gooden takes a look at how those cameras are already making a difference. >> since april, the city of san francisco began installing

these automated license plate camera readers, a total of 100 are active right now. and 300 more go online in july bay area in different jurisdictions they put out information. we can type it into our license plate reader and make models of cars whether they have license plate or not. and >> they will paying the information and different intersections in the location. mayor london breed says the cameras have provided vital information resulting in arrests and cases, including >> assault, retail theft, carjacking and robbery. when it comes to those who have privacy concerns. the mayor has this to say goal is not to invade somebody's privacy, but at the end of the day, we need this type of technology in these type of tools in order to protect the public. and there are tradeoffs when you want a safe society in using 21st century technology. >> it's going to be an important part of that. >> these high tech cameras are different than the speed enforcement ones. officials

say they will only focus on vehicle information. none of this technology that we're using includes facial recognition technology. >> and we're still in talks about what that could entail and how that can be helpful and the location of these cameras will remain unknown to the public. >> but we're told the san francisco police department has been strategic with their placements, but just to know that you are potentially if you're committing a crime, you're going to be caught. that's what we want everyone to think about the cameras that are all over san francisco in san francisco as a good in kron. 4 news. >> i don't want to sugarcoat >> the break-ins are debilitating to small businesses and small businesses are what make oakland thrive. it's the reason i state. >> i also mixed reaction after governor newsom says crime is down. 33% in oakland. this comes after he deployed 120 additional chp officers to crack down on crime with some business owners that we talked to say they actually feel differently.

>> numbers speak to the day-to-day life of oakland where the crime has kind of dissipated. the problem is the last night's gratefully. i think there's been less window. smash in. >> in montclair village. so that's that's a good thing. but resoundingly people do not by the oakland police department. they say auto burglaries are down 60% commercial burglaries down 43%. and there's been a 20% reduction in homicides. that report comes as the oakland police say they made several arrests recently in connection with the surgeon home invasions, robberies and burglaries. they say one suspect is responsible for at least 4 home invasions in the highland park neighborhood back in april. >> basically, the suspect was just scooping out the area. he would just normally drive around park several blocks away and then walked to the locations that he wanted to burglarize. we're committed robberies that how he specifically identify those

targeted residence. we don't know. >> a group of teens are in juvenile hall as well. officers say the group is responsible for more than 30 commercial burglaries and armed robberies and 6.35. and video online post by the tunnel police department shows a man jumping over a counter in a police building and attacking a city worker. this happened around 4.15, tuesday. the panel, public safety building. on tenant avenue. and officer into ended up are resting. the 65 year-old named chester victor. he was seen there walking around the reception area. another person was being held there at the front counter. you saw that any went to the front of counter rang the bell several times. and then within seconds he grabbed the staff members right arm. and that staff member was able to break free. but then victor climbed over the counter and through the window. and worker then ran to

the main hallway of the police building where officers made their way over there. chester victor was booked into the martinez detention facility. the man faces an attempted murder charge now accused of shooting at san jose police officers and then jumping out of his own second story window. this all happened around 4.30, in the morning on sunday when officers responded to the home that here. you can see on the map is delaware avenue and martin way. and they found 52 year-old anthony handy throwing things out of the window of that home. first, they tried to talk and then when police started walking away, they say that handy started shouting in their direction, barricaded himself in and then eventually jump from that second story window. he was taken to hospital for injuries from the fall and then later booked into jail. none of the officers was hurt. >> in san jose, a therapist to work with kids at elementary school is in jail now for

child crimes. police identified alexander lopez nunez as the person who they say assaulted a girl more than once during therapy. the assaults are alleged to have happened from march until last friday. >> see if the report from reporting party stating that the incident had occurred the day before they were able to basically catch the suspect in the act of of sexually molesting assaulting the victim. >> nunez worked as an instructional aide at forest hill elementary school at the time of the assaults. san jose police say there might be more victims and so they want anyone with information to give them a call. a graduation night was ruined for an east bay teen because of a car break-in until the community stepped in to help. so far says that she went to dinner near 40th and broadway in oakland last thursday after graduating from envision academy. few hours later,

>> demonized. >> the memorial is truly been a beacon of love to the lgbt community, but its impact has been expanding more and more a sign of this soon to be unveiled in another part of golden gate park. >> this is the circle of friends. what many people consider to be the center of the national aids memorial grove in here, the names of some people who passed away from aids, but also those who donated to set this place aside. the circle also serves as the inspiration for one of the park's newest memorials. this memorial is going to be the first permanent memorial in the u.s. for cancer. just up the hill from the national aids memorial with a view as far as sutro tower. >> construction is about to start on a brand new beacon of love says on tests with san francisco, rec and parks rec and park is partnering with bay area young survivors, which is a group that helps and provide support for people that have been diagnosed with cancer. much like the circle of friends in the aids memorial grove, the bay area, young survivors, cancer
