>> ellicott, 4 news at 4 combating pandemic challenges up and down california. san francisco city leaders met today to tackle the lingering effects of the pandemic in san francisco. and a warning tonight for people in antioch after a string of almost dozen robberies outside of banks. police some tips on how to protect yourself. >> from the station. starts now. >> appreciate you joining us for kron. 4 news at 4. i'm grant lotus and i'm vicki liviakis antioch. police are warning residents to be

careful the next time they visit the bank. they say that in the past 90 days there have been nearly a dozen reports of people being followed and robbed after leaving local banks and other instances the robberies happened in the bank parking lots in order to stay safe. the antioch pd is telling people to just be more aware of their surroundings. try to avoid carrying large amounts of money when leaving banks try to walk in well lit areas and they say don't hesitate to report any suspicious behavior to police gales going to have a full report coming up on kron. 4 news at 5. meantime, a police in premont are investigating a deadly shooting at a drugstore in the fremont hub shopping center. this happened about 11 o'clock last night. witnesses telling police that a security guard got into an argument that argument escalated and the security guard was shot. the other person was stabbed multiple times when police arrived. the security guard at said died at the scene. the other person was taken to a

local hospital. no word on their condition. but anyone with information is being asked to call fremont police. oakland police arrest 5 people after an assault with a deadly weapon on an officer just before 10, 30 this morning officers spotted a car wanted in connection with the armed robbery out of san leandro. this was in the area foster avenue and bernhardt drive when officers attempted to stop the car. they say the driver tried to escape by ramming the patrol car, 2 adults and 3 juveniles in the car were detained. nobody hurt. berkeley public schools could begin providing cash payments to black students whose ancestors were enslaved in the u.s.. >> that was one of the ideas floated at a berkeley unified district school board meeting this week. members heard ideas from a committee tasked with developing recommendations for what reparations could look like in the district and how they would be funded. the board also discussed developing a new curriculum for teaching the history of slavery in america. no plans

been approved yet. but all board members expressed support for the ideas presented by that task force. >> we know that there isn't anything that will actually repairs that farm. but we know that this is a step in the right direction towards reparations or towards repairing the harm that was caused to our people here and the united states and beyond. >> the task force also recommended creating a thorough harm report documenting the effects of segregation discriminatory policies, another lasting effects of slavery in the district. >> a former employee at a bay area are red lobster is part of a class action lawsuit against the restaurant chain. george parker. was an employee at the rohnert park, red lobster. he claims that the restaurant chain failed to provide adequate notice of nationwide layoffs last month. the rohnert park location closed abruptly last month.

the lawsuit claims that california red lobster employees were not given the required 60 days notice before they were let go. the lawsuit is seeking damages of more than $15,000 per employee. san francisco-based wells fargo has fired more than a dozen workers alleging that they simulated keyboard activity. that is according to a report by bloomberg that says that the employees are being accused of using mouse movers, which simulate mouse motion to give the impression that someone is at their keyboards. according to bloomberg, those employees who lost their jobs were in the bank's wealth and investment management unit. >> whether time here as we get a live look outside above san francisco on this friday afternoon, looking towards the weekends and it has just been gorgeous out there. meteorologist kyla grogan is here with a look at what we're dealing with. a pay their yes. we've had a beautiful day out there. blue skies, as you can see from the east bay here as we take a live look. >> and temperatures have

warmed up a bit inland. antioch, now seeing at 88 degrees, 87 in concord. that's where the warmth is today. just 62 in downtown san francisco with some nice low 80's up in santa rosa and can see down to san jose sitting at about 81 degrees. we're getting a little breezy out there yet again. and this wind has been picking up onshore flow, but you'll notice it's starting to also have a little bit of a north westerly component in some spots. so. >> obviously, fairfield, pretty breezy, be can see, you know, even the ones that aren't above 20 miles per hour, like san francisco in fairfield still in the teens and still pretty windy out there. so. >> the wind is going to picking up as we go throughout the night tonight to just be ready for that. this is san francisco. it also happens again as we go into tomorrow and just to give you kind of a quick look at your weekend, you can see it's pretty nice out there. but the wind is going to be a little bit of an issue and that will cause us a little bit of an elevation of fire danger. so well, your father's day is looking good. i just want to make sure we talk about that wind and how it affect us. and i'll be back in just a little bit and we'll talk about that. back to you.

ev charging access is expanding in san francisco. mayor breed is launching a pilot program that's going to allow. >> curbside charging for electric vehicles city hoping to install more than 1700 of them by the year 2030. currently, there are just under 1200 public ev charging stations before selecting a location. the program hopes to gain public feedback applications from charging providers. tackling economic recovery. well, that was a topic at a special hearing today. state officials including assembly member matt haney shared what steps are being taken and what more needs to be done to help cities recover from the pandemic. at issue focusing on the general overview of the covid pandemic and its effects on downtown corridors. assemblyman matt haney talked about how in la office vacancy there continues to plague the downtown with rates of around 26% in san francisco. those

rates are even higher at 35%. those high rates of drastically hurt those in the service sector struggling to make a living. this particular hearing. we will be focusing on. >> investing in our downtowns, essential workforce. this committee was created to understand each downtown's. you need. challenges and strengths so that the legislature can create and support policies that would directly help our struggling urban communities. effects of the covid-19 pandemic have been resounding for our downtowns even after many aspects of everyday life have returned to normal. with this committee has learned is that one of the most notable issues impacting our downtown, the prevalence of vacant office buildings. >> big news today from the supreme court. the high court has struck down a trump era ban on bump stocks. kron four's washington correspondent reshad hudson reports about what this means.

>> the supreme court ruled the trump administration did not follow federal law when it reversed course from previous administrations to ban bump stocks. bump stocks are legal again in the u.s. is just the device, something that you add on to just to have fun. with friday, the supreme court struck down a ban on bump stocks put in place by former president donald trump. the band came after gunman used bump stocks. a rapid fire gun accessory to shoot at a crowd during a music festival in vegas, killing nearly 60 people. >> michael cargill sued the government over the ban is now celebrating the ruling supreme court that super glee. exactly where what answer tennessee republican congressman tim burchett and alabama republican congressman del strong say the court has spoken. it's the second amendment. and i stand by. the supreme court has ruled. let's move on with maryland democratic congressman jamie raskin slammed the court's ruling. the idea that.

the power to do that. today. kron 4 employees spent the day volunteering at food banks around the bay. >> this effort to fight food, insecurity aligns with our founder's day of caring its winner, parent company nexstar was founded. so we've set a lot of folks here to the san francisco-marin food bank packed meals slipped, helping hands said we heard from a bunch of kron, 4 volunteers who said feels good to be out helping. >> and means a lot. you know, i just relocated back to san francisco and misses home. so area native bay area native, the acid, the ability to help the community is amazing. getting bags together full of food for the community, those in need and it's so awesome to be out here because you actually get to butte your co-workers. but also you just feel so good afterwards. >> and the volunteering did not stop there crown prince charles. clifford has some details from where we were at the contra costa.

>> well, right now, i'm inside the volunteer center here at the food bank of contra costa and solano counties were today kron. 4 employees were helping every year. the parent company of kron 4 nexstar broadcasting post what's called founder's day. it's a day for employees to volunteer. we have chosen to help out here at the food bank in contra costa county as well the food bank in san francisco. full in tears here, box of food, which is then delivered to needy families. now usually food banks get a lot of attention during the holidays, thanksgiving and christmas. but there is a need in the summer months as well. what kind of demand are you seeing out there right now? seen a lot of people come what what's it like right now? >> yeah, absolutely. we continue to see a high need in our community. currently over 400,000 people every between contra costa solano counties. and of course, none of this is possible without assistance from the public were looking for volunteers. you're around, you know, both in the warehouse, as you can see back here at our director should be shuns. we're also looking

when it comes to covid vaccines. the fda has. >> advise drugmakers, vicki to update there covid vaccines to target a newer strain of virus kron four's and rob nesbitt talked with an infectious disease expert about these changes and joins us now live from the newsroom with what you need to know. rob grant vicki, a lot of people have probably noticed an increase of positive covid cases among. >> friends and family. and the fda is making changes based on which variant of covid. they're most worried about, according to doctor peter chin, hong the most the fda is most concerned about kp to strain of covid which accounts for just over 22% of cases in the u.s. not the majority, but the fda has advised drugmakers

like pfizer and moderna to update their covid vaccines to target that strain because they believe it will account for the majority of cases by the end of the year. doctor chin-hong says hospitals don't track positive cases of covid like they were mandated during the height of the pandemic. but he says there's been a 50% increase er visits this week relating to covid cases. the infectious disease expert at ucsf vaccines to be updated by fall and explain why it was important for the fda to make the changes. infection. prevention is best. >> the vaccine matches what's going around. and because that vaccine that was unveiled in the fall of 2023. that variant xbb one-point-five. it's not sickly anymore. you still get a little protection against infection, but not as much as when that was more common. i also talked with someone who recently tested positive for

covid. >> it wasn't the first time coming up on kron. 4 news at 05:00pm. hear how their recent symptoms compared to their first positive case. reporting in the newsroom. i'm rob nesbitt kron. 4 news. thanks from people taking medications for adhd might find it harder to get treatment after the arrests of 2 executives >> telehealth company. this week, the cdc issued a warning about potential disruption to care around the same time. 2 executives from done global were indicted on fraud charges related to federal health care. this could affect they say between 30 to 50,000 patients across the country. oakland police are investigating a shooting involving a person who was shot while they were inside their own home. >> this incident happened yesterday afternoon on 5th street about a block away fr the west. oakland bart station. the victim says that suspect attempted to break their house but was unsucc. the suspect then fired several shots at t home before driving away. the

victim was hit by one of the bullets they did suffer minor injuries and no arrests have been made. but anyone with information is being asked to contact oakland police. in the south bay, business owner in milpitas is picking up the pieces after a break-in at his restaurant. you can see the damage done at to korea, las vegas on north milpitas boulevard. the owner tells us that it happened shortly after midnight yesterday. the total cost damages about $3300 2000. and that is just to replace the window. a pedestrian was killed in a crash tragically while riding a scooter. >> on highway 87 in san jose was early this morning. they were hit by a car. it happened just before 03:00am in san jose near the northbound off-ramp to taylor street. the chp says this person was ring o erthat you can kind of pick up anywhere, just pay for on the freeway. a the peon that person died. the

crash is being investigated. this is the 21st traffic fatality victim in san jose this year. and overturned big rig causing traffic delays in pleasanton today. this is on westbound 5.80, near hop yard road. the chp says around 09:00am 2 cars crashed with one of them hitting the semi. the semi then hit a minivan and then that costco truck overturned. one person was taken to the hospital. it's not clear how badly hurt they are. 2 lanes have been blocked off. the chp hopes to have all lanes reopened soon. the cause of the crash is being investigated. >> unionized muni operators ratified a new contract with san francisco. this comes after voting down the previous proposal about 2 weeks ago. this contract runs from july. first through june of 2027 over that time, operators are going to receive a 13% increase. the first pay bump coming on july. 1st. the

harvey milk terminal is opening next week. mayor london breed said to attend a ribbon cutting ceremony. it's going to be held monday, june 17th once open travelers are going to find new shops, restaurants, art displays new ticket counters and 2 new airplane gates for a total of 27 gate, alaska and delta airlines plan to move into that terminal. the project cost about 2.5 billion dollars. but as pope believes that it is a worthy investment. >> a lot of money as we take a look outside here along san francisco's embarcadero. >> kind broken here with the details. hey, there's a cruise ship. it's bad. i know we heard it kind of setting off the the the sound they make when they pull away the horns they blow against of blue skies, though, as you take a live look at the golden gate bridge, a little breezy out there. but a pretty nice afternoon. it's been a beautiful day. lots of sunshine. we're going to see that wind pick up again this afternoon and evening. and that really happens off

through the weekend. unfortunate that does cause a slight uptick in fire. danger. but as we look ahead, we are going have a very nice father's day weekend. just a couple degrees cooler than today. so let's talk about this wind as we get into tonight. you can see some of these gusts getting upwards of 30 35 miles per hour. we kind of do the same thing again as we get into saturday and then again, as we get into sunday and monday and in fact, sunday into monday, looks like maybe the more troubling time for this. now we're not under red flag warning or a fire weather watch. but you can see that it's real close to us. it is in nevada is portions of northern california, including sacramento, including clear lake, you know, not too far from viewing area to the north there. to those of you that are east of fairfield. so just want to make sure you the heads up on this. the timing on this is saturday evening through monday evening that they're under the red flag warning now for us here. you can see that it does start to cause an uptick. every time this wind kind of goes up in the afternoon and evening. so you can see the different towns along here, different towns and cities and where

>> the faa is investigating a new incident with the boeing max 8 jet. it was on its way to oakland. this recent southwest flight from phoenix inexperience. kind of a rare problem. it's known as a dutch roll. that's when the tale slides causing the wings to rock from side to side. this incident happened back on may 25th. the jet landed safely and nobody was hurt. but the same type of jet that was temporarily grounded back in january. you remember the faa says that an inspection of the plane showed damage to a unit that controls back power to that plane's rudder. the

agency says other airlines have not reported anything similar. this as the faa is now investigating how counterfeit medals got into planes that were manufactured by boeing and airbus, according to the new york times, the 2 jet makers used titanium that was acquired from a small chinese company. that medal was sold with fake documentation. the issue was discovered by another company that makes parts for both boeing and airbus by the name of spirit aerosystems. they found some small holes in their materials from corrosion. not clear how many planes have been made with a questionable medals. more layoffs coming here to the bay area. unfortunately, virtual reality company. the arch at laid off 30% of its workforce. their ceo, graham taylor, making that announcement on linked in on wednesday. the company says over hiring is leading to that decision. employees are going to get 12 weeks of severance pay. to

apple workers are proposing a class action lawsuit against the tech giant claiming it systematically paid about female workers less than their male counterparts for basically the same jobs for years. there is a lot here in california prohibiting an employer to ask about your previous pay your last job. cnn says that apile will ask for a candidate's pay expectations. it's what they call it in order to set your starting salary, which the suit says this is lower for women. the filing covers women who work at apple's engineering marketing and apple care divisions. if the case is approved for class action status, the suit could apply to as many as 12,000 female employees. >> coming up, a bill trying to support farmers and nutrition programs is on the way to the house floor. but some lawmakers say it is a step backwards on climate change will hear from people like people don't like it. also, san jose is hosting its first ever house music festivals.

at the candidates squaring off for the u.s. senate seat long held by late senator dianne feinstein. according to a new poll from the public policy institute of california, schiff is leading garvey by 25 points last month during a one-on-one interview with garvey expressed confidence he can win where we have common six-and-a-half minds, i think is minor miracle and we will win because we care about all people that loyola law school professor jessica levinson says that will be very challenging in a state where registered democrats outnumber registered republicans by about 2 to one. i don't think there's anything that steve garvey can do. i think that steve garvey is the opponent that adam schiff wanted and we all essentially knew that this race was over. once it became a top 2 finish with adam schiff and steve garvey. the pull also finding in the race for president, democrat joe biden will easily win the state of california against republican donald trump. but in the same poll, more than half of respondents also said they disapprove of the job. biden is doing. it comes as

36% of respondents said the economy and cost of living is their top issue. priority followed by housing, affordability, homelessness, crime and government. mark baldassare as the poll director it. mean the economy. we asked people where about. >> one of the economic conditions going to be during the next 12 majority of people say that they expect been economic times on that topic. a majority of respondents said they would prefer to pay lower taxes and have a state government that provides fewer services. it's for that reason why baldessari says he was surprised to see more than 6 out of 10 respondents said they will vote no on a ballot measure that would make it tougher for state lawmakers to raise taxes. specifically. the proposal will require voters to approve every new tax or tax governor gavin newsom and democrats in the legislature are opposed to the measure and filed a lawsuit in the state supreme court to take it off the ballot. citing concerns is unconstitutional and interferes with the role of government. but supporters say

the measures all about protecting taxpayers were returning power to them away from the politicians. >> so again, they have the final say in the future on all new state and local taxes. rob lapsley of the california business roundtable is a major proponent of the measure. >> he believes the majority of californians do support the initiative, but he feels the poll question was difficult to understand because it included the measures formal ballot summary and title is published by attorney general rob bonta just as he does with every ballot measure. some have described the way bunt awarded the title and summary as convoluted and lengthy causing voter fatigue and confusion. it can be very frustrating voters if they're confused about what exactly a measure would do. >> we see this in many other areas where if people aren't sure what the specific impact of their vote will be, then they either won't vote for that measure or they'll vote now. >> and the poll also found 54% of californians disapprove of the job. governor gavin newsom

is doing and it's even worse for the legislature with roughly 6 out of every 10 californians saying they disapprove what's happening and that building reporting in tom wallace kron 4 news. >> president biden has been campaigning in southern california alongside some big names. former president obama, george clooney and julia roberts will join the president at a fundraising event in downtown l a late night talk show host jimmy kimmel will be interviewing them last week. former president trump held fundraising events in newport beach and beverly hills. they're trying to get that money. santa rosa police have arrested a group of teenage boys who they say it's connected to a gang-related crimes, including robberies, assaults, according to officers, the boys range in age from 13 to 15 and are behind a surge in crime that happened in the downtown area of santa rosa. the transit mall. they say the latest assault was june 6th when a

teenage boy was attacked and robbed by 10 people. the victim was beaten to the point of being unconscious, rushed to the hospital. police say these crimes have increased the demand for more law enforcement resources. anyone with info is asked to contact the santa rosa police department gang crimes. team. >> 2 miners in santa clara county were arrested for allegedly stealing 2 cars of this white cadillac. it was stolen from a santa clara home on wednesday. it's not a white cadillac, but black chevrolet, there's a white cadillac, but a black chevrolet camaro that was stolen from san jose back on may 27th police spotted the cars in the san jose neighborhood where the miners even rammed into a police vehicle as they tried to get away. juvenile was cited and released to his parents. the other was booked into juvenile hall. a massive drug bust in san francisco's mission district. police say that a resident alerted them to a car

that may have been involved in drug distribution. officers conducted a search warrant for the car near 17th and shot will street where they found more than a half million dollars in cash and drugs, including cocaine, meth, ketamine and mushrooms. i 246 year olds. they were found in the car and arrested on multiple charges. flowers and candles are at a light post in the city's bernal heights neighborhood after a driver hit and killed a man. >> this week, mission and courtland avenue advocates from walk sf have been leaving heart shape, notes there with the names of other pedestrians killed this year. >> number 10, and that's because very people the crashes. it's 10 too many. this why here today. getting people to come at the moment. that not okay. >> walk sf says that's

dry air mixing in today helping to dissipate that marine layer. so lots of sunshine, even along the coastline, the sea breeze, though, has picked up again. it will blow as we head through the evening hours. if you're stepping outside, be prepared for that. if you're headed closer, the coastline, of course, you can find much cooler tempeyatures there. numbers in the 50's and the 60's get inside the bay. really a nice evening outside. as you see those temperatures hovering in the upper 60's low 70's in the valleys, 80's. plenty of those as we head through 5 o'clock tonight, then start to slowly cool down, but very comfortable. if you want to have your dinner outside, why not? it's a nice evening out there. but high pressure going to start to weaken a bit as we get in toward father's day weekend. it's going to change things up a bit to still have a nice weekend ahead. i think we're looking warm temperatures on saturday. the winds, though they will be picking up the fire danger is going to be elevated above. more on that. your father's day forecast coming up in a few minutes. i lawrence in the south bay of san jose is hosting its first-ever latin house music festival this weekend. >> the festival takes over discovery meadow in the

>> this year's farm bill is on its way to the house floor and republican chair of the house agriculture committee says that some democrats supporting the bill. congressman gt thompson says it strikes a good balance between support for farmers and support for nutrition programs. house democratic leader says that the bill is a punch in the gut. for those who depend on government food aid and a big step backward in the effort to slow climate change. our washington correspondent basil john reports. >> we know what america needs for farmville. republican congressman glenn gt thompson is excited for the farm bill to hit the house floor. we brought the voices of american agriculture to the table. this house farm bill includes nutrition program assistance and rural support funding like net crop insurance allows a farmer and rancher to pay. >> paying enough bills off to keep farming for the following year. thompson is also proud the farm bill includes critical support for dairy

the forecast for the bay area. you can see even this afternoon see the area shaded in yellow and orange. those are places that are elevated as far fire danger concerns across the bay area tomorrow afternoon. maybe a little bit as we head toward late in the day. again, you see that popping up in the state. as you can see, the sea breeze kicking in once again. i think more substantial as we get in toward a sunday. that's when those winds really start to ramp up. and that's we see some of those gusty winds developing around the bay area. speaking of winds here, they are the forecast as we head over the next 24 hours by tomorrow afternoon, they start to ramp up again. but i think even more so as we get into sunday as those really winds start to see 30, maybe some 40 mile an hour gusts outside. so looks like he's going to be blustery in spots. so we'll see that happen as we head through the weekend, especially the latter part. temperatures tomorrow 50's 60's in the san francisco. maybe some 70's in the mission. really some nice weather headed. looks like as we head throughout the father's day weekend, sunny and bright. just watch out for the windy conditions. then we get into next week. we start talk about the beginning of summer. maybe a little heat wave. how about that? maybe even toasty at the coast. that
