>> today, 5.30. we continue our coverage on that point fire we've been talking about and northern sonoma county. it has grown to nearly 1200 acres and containment is at 20%. >> we've heard that one firefighter was injured hit by a tree. that person expected to be okay. the wildfire started yesterday in the area of stewarts point skaggs

springs road. that's near lake sonoma. kron four's chief meteorologist lawrence karnow was now joining us tracking the weather conditions tonight. yeah, just this last hour now we're starting to see the winds pick up just a little bit in and around that fire area. that' what we've been concerned about. so can let our guard down winds of not ramped up with some of he models we're forecasting now. >> we're starting tick up just a little bit. you can see just last hour. you see some winds now blowing a right around skaggs springs there right around the fire of 12 miles per hour. moving out of the west little bit more of a northerly component just to the north of some of those winds. we're expecting some of those winds to turn more northerly and northwesterly overnight tonight. watching that very closely, those winds blowing on some very dry conditions in and around that area. so the humidity down into the single digits in spots. here's the latest forecast model. and you can see some of the forecast wind gusts in around parts of that area and that showing some 20's some 30 mile an hour gusts now that has not transpired as of yet. but here's the good news as we head through the night

tonight, get or 9 o'clock. tonight, the winds begin to back off a little bit still coming out of north northwesterly direction. that may be a little more normally overnight tonight in spots, but really backing off as we head through the night. tomorrow morning. firefighters love that. if that holds true, that would give them a better chance to get a handle on that fire. now by the afternoon tomorrow, those winds really ramp up coming out of the west. it will be a more type of when that will be blowing. but it will be gusty at times as we head toward tomorrow afternoon. checking out humidity, you can in santa rosa down to 19% in around the fire. we're seeing some spots down in the single digits. so very dry out there overnight tonight, get a little westerly component to the wind. and you can see that the ramp up. so the moisture levels going to come up overnight tonight and tomorrow morning. it will get will back off by tomorrow afternoon. but as we get into wednesday, probably the best news of all is that we're going to see more of that fog make a return to the bay area. of course, that could bring a lot more moisture in the air and will slow the progress of that fire. guys, back to you. >> thank you, of course, people who live and work in the area of the point fire are feeling the effects. some of

them have followed evacuation orders of some of them are standing by is warnings are still in place. a kron 4, sarah stinson talk to some of them. >> we're here on mountain view ranch road where we can see the fire burning in the distance. ve close to homes and vineyards here in the healdsburg area. this is been a wind dr fireswhat cal fire says so all es aron the weather and the wind today as crews worked to gain containand control. that is the biggest goal. get that fire lines, that it does not go over. the ridge go south into more areas of homes in this part of sonoma county. cal fire says they have been working not only from the sky, but also with boots on the ground trying to gain control of the point fire. this has been very scary for people who live in this area. many of them experiencing several fires over the year, including the walbridge fire in

twenty-twen a devastating one at that. the burned huneds of homes and structures. many people who live in this area evacuated on unday and returned home monday to see if their home is ok and to grab a few things. it wanted to know if still have home. >> and because couldn't really tell from the maps. thank goodness i have a home game to get some things that i forgot my panic leaving yesterday. >> david or lives on dry creek road. he evacuated his cattle when he saw fire sparking nearby. we got cows that are out on past ron west right creek. yesterday we saw a few spot fires start about a half mile 3 quarters away from our pastor there. and so we going government tells officers that way to get them to a safer location. the owner of a vineyard explained how quickly she got her customers out the day of the fire saying it's important to be safe than sorry. >> and then i got my staff all done and we closed up an evacuated ourselves because we've learned to evacuate early around here since have limited access in and out and

the fire guys need to have that access. there is an evacuation order in place for people who live near north and east of shimmies road south of stewarts point skaggs springs road. >> and west of dry creek. it's important to know your evacuation zone as well as important to know where you can go for help. there is a temporary evacuation center and that is located in forest ville at laguna high school and el molino high school there you can ask questions and get any services you may need. i'm sara stinson reporting kron. 4 news. >> we talk to the owner of the creekside cottage. that's a rental cars that area. he lives just south of the evacuation area and of course, is being keeping a really close eye on the fire. >> we're probably about 10 miles south of the fire, depending on which way the winds blowing. it's either a pretty smoking or sunny like it is right now. i alerted the

guests are coming this weekend that others a fire that they should keep an eye on and that if the county does issue an evacuation order, that they wouldn't be able to and, you know, i'm monitoring the i'm hoping that the winds stays like this, which is nothing. but, you know, it's i think it's supposed to get windy this afternoon. and i think that's really going tell the tale as to what happens next. >> again, there are 2 temporary evacuation centers. one is at the laguna high school and that area and the other at all. elma leno high school. >> strike teams from placer county in yolo county are in los angeles county helping here with the post fire, which started saturday night near highway 5 interstate 5, just west of lancaster and south of bakersfield in la county. it exploded more than 5,000 acres. fire crews say it is still burning out of control. just 8% contain it. further east in san bernardino county.

the has sperry of fire has grown to more than 1100 acres is here. highway one 73 and has prompted evacuation warnings. it's not clear how this one started. winds are being blamed, though, for the fact that it quickly moves north. and in sacramento, crews battled a big brush fire that had been threatening homes and forcing evacuations. what is being called the excelsior fire has burned nearly 900 acres and south sacramento. no injuries reported. but there have been reports of outbuildings that where at least damage to sacramento regional strike team had actually then headed to la but were called back to deal with this fire and stay with kron 4 on air and online for continuing wildfire coverage. just scan the qr code. you'll be taken to the wildfire section of our website where you'll find the latest evacuation orders and warnings active wildfires and air quality map and how to mitigate wildfire risks. that's kron 4 dot com. a

stolen car was damaged during the arrest of 2. >> teenaged suspects in san bruno. they are accused of stealing the car early this morning. and hayward police say the teenagers tried driving away when officers approached but they use spike strips to stop them when they were arrested after trying to run away. they've been identified as oakland natives. they have been booked on a string of charges. >> stanford university graduate organized a mass walkout at a graduation ceremony here over the weekend to protest the ongoing war in gaza. crowd for a viewer sent us this video from the commencement, the organization, stanford for palestine hosted the protest. this is that again, the commencement their students are demanding that the university divest from companies that help fund israel. this is just the latest in a string of protests that have happened on stanford's campus since israel was attacked october 7th.

meanwhile, in the middle east, benjamin netanyahu, israel's prime minister has dissolved his country's six-person poor cabinet. big news on that front. the decision came a week after benny gantz minister resign from netanyahu's government. the prime minister will now hold smaller, informal meetings with advisors says the war in gaza continues. >> san francisco's a school board will begin considering which of its 121 public schools will close or merge this in the face of declining enrollment. the district says enrollment has dropped by more than 4,000 students since the 2017 18 school year the district tt could lose another 4600 students by 2032. and there have been staffing shortages at the start of this past school year. at least 15% of classrooms. we're staffed by substitute teachers or teachers on special

assignment. the school board will be presented with remmendaons at a june 25th meeting. people in parts of santa clara and santa cruz counties might spot flying helicopters d dronesthat because pg and e is conducting a public safety power shutoff drill. that's today and tomorrow. but they are sharing people. they don't think the drill will actually interrupt anybody's power. >> the issue of retail thefts is once again center stage at the state capitol. >> 8 on wallace explains. most democratic geaders are doubling down on the plan, but new today, one powerful democratic assembly member has come out against it. >> while the democrat coming out against these proposed amendment is noneerthan assembly pubc safety committee chair kevin mccarty. he calls these proposed amendments which remember were introduced by members of his own party. a poison pill. democratic assemblymember

kevin mccarty seen in conversation on the assembly floor as lawmakers begin a new week. but he was nowhere to be found as the senate appropriations committee took up a package of bills to address retail theft. mccarty had authored one of 7 retail theft bills. the comms te supposed to take up, but then this happened party. he has pulled his bill. >> we will not be hearing it mccarty ended up removing his bill before it came up. his bill would have helped to create a database for retailers to report theft. other bills in the package include want to add a penalty up to 3 years in prison for someone found to have stolen property with the intent to resell and want to expand tho california highway patrol property crimes. task force mccarthy removed his support for the package because he does not agree with the plan by democratic leaders to at amendments to it. that would cancel several the retail theft bills. if voters approve a ballot measure to reform prop 47. >> the 2014 voter approved a law that turned some nonviolent that some crimes from felonies to misdemeanors,

including retail theft when the items stolen are valued at less than $950. in a statement, mccarty said, unfortunately, i cannot support the retail that's package which contains my retail theft accountability bill ab 17, 94 with the poison pill non operative amendments included republicans echoing a similar message nonsense. >> these build a good bills. if they didn't have that in or opt ability class and you have full support from everybody. and that would be a bipartisan bill. but in the end, democrats on the committee voted in favor of the amendment, arguing the legislature's proposal does not go hand in hand with the ballot measure to reform prop 47. they believe that measure will lead to mass incarceration opposite of what they say. their bills will do it full solutions to retail crime and endeavors to preserve criminal justice reforms that have been affected necessary steps retail >> returning to overly punitive that proven not to work. >> and we could go through this all over again on wednesday when the assembly

>> lawrence, karnow your ears perked up when you hear that story. that's one of your favorite stretches of the right. that route quite often. yeah, it got that you're going to help in the sand relocation law. i don't have a big rig to do that. but yeah, get out there and start moving some stuff around. but hey, guys, yeah, we've got some changes coming our way. we watch these temperatures cooling down around the bay area in the coming days. that's a good thing. we're going watch humidity coming up. they're quality. certainly an issue with the fire and active fire and the north bay right now, look easy out there looking toward the north bay, the marin headlands out there as well, but not bad so far. overall, here's latest forecast for this fire right now. you can see the fire active right here, the bull's eye. and then as we take you through the night tonight, you gee the northerly north westerly component. the winds of a sudden some of that smoke starts to work its way back in the bay area. so especially to get parts of the east bay overnight tonight into early tomorrow morning. you can expect that to spread a likely lift somewhat. so these are talking about low amount. so maybe he's out there tomorrow. so watch out for that. and then things are going to

switch gears as we by tomorrow afternoon. all of a sudden get more of a westerly component, a win. and that's going to cut off that smoke and senate further ease. guess what will the sacramento valley and places like napa and sonoma likely to see that as we head in toward tomorrow afternoon. red flag warnings remain in effect until 8 o'clock tonight. the winds still whipping in spots out there right now is still the possibility of spreading the fire. got to be extra extra careful right now. humidities are just extremely low. 10 to about 15%. so very, very dry air up there right their quality overall, you've got some moderate amounts of pollutants as you make your way in the bay right now. and also the south surprisingly good in parts of the north bay tomorrow, you ll see some of haze out there from the smoke overnight tont beinhe sand on the bay area's we head toward tomorrow and then it looks the temperatures may be backing off a little bit. still warm in spots, 60's. maybe couple low 70's san francisco. couple patches of fog likely to make return along the coastline tomorrow. 50's 60's out toward the beaches inside the bay about 66 degrees in burlingame. 73 said carl, 75 degrees and a

redwood city. the south bay got a lot of 80's as we head toward the afternoon tomorrow, probably mid 80's, maybe even some upper 80's. the warm spots by tomorrow aften. 87 little more about 82 of snow. about 75 in fremont. 83 in walnut creek. 74 degrees in berkeley and breezy in the afternoon. 87 degrees in the concord. 87 also in the pittsburgh and approaching the coastline again, looking toward the north bay. those temperatures up in the 80's. so, yeah, we've got some changes in the weather pattern coming our way. that's good news. i think for firefighters overall, we're going to see less wind as we head in toward tomorrow. higher humidity is going to be coming in and then we get into summer and guess what? we're going to see things turn around quickly. we'll watch as temperatures drop off more fall on the way. but then we get into summer. would you know those erares running back up in the 90s we head toward the weekend? well, at least a little callingh. hop this will be it may be just enough to help them really get a handle on that fire. thank lawrence. well, speaking getting a handle on things, the u.s. surgeon general is calling warni labels. he wants them on social media sites.

>> warning people about the damage that can do to kids mental health. basil, john has reaction now from washington. >> in an op-ed in the new york times, us surgeon general vivek murthy lfor social media companies to set warning bels on their apps and websites like those you see on cigarette boxes, writing their use is associated with significant mental health harms for kids. these harms to kids have got to stop julie with mothers against media addiction says this is an important step forward spending endless hours on screens is not it. doctor murthy said kids who spend more than 3 hours a day on social media deal with double the risk of anxiety and depression symptoms last summer, average daily use in that age group was just below 5 hours. if i had known things i know now i never would have allowed my children to have access to social media. but some critics say the surgeon general should focus on putting parents back in control, putting warning
