dan thorn for the second time. the top 5 candidates for mayor in san francisco debated on the city's top issues. this includes homelessness, affordability and crime in the city. and it didn't come without several candidates targetng the incumbent mayor london breed and then targeting each other. kron. four's jack moment tells us how things went down. >>5 candidates running to become san francisco's mayor duking it out on the top issues at the top was public safety. former mayor mark farrell says mayor london breed's policies have forced police officers out of their jobs. >>i will restore the stopping levels inside our san francisco police department to make sure we have lot of recruits support supervisor dorothy's drop program and fully fund our police academy. mayor breed responded saying it was federal budget when he was mayor that drove police away. and to be clear. >>we have when he was mayor, his contract was one of the reasons why many of the officers decided to leave in the first place. but no matter

i'm incredibly proud of so sport that i armor lgbtq+ community here in the san francisco. >>the commotion wasn't just inside as this event was hosted by the san francisco democratic club. other candidates protesting out side saying the public has a right to know they're running too. >>they keep telling the people only 5 people running. people running i'm running because i work for the government and i see the corruption inside. >>that was kron four's. zac moment reporting for us. dozens of arrests were made following a one-day law enforcement operation around san francisco's tenderloin. the operation aimed to arrest fugitives with outstanding arrest warrants. a total of 57 people were arrested. 43 of them having arrest warrants. the operation also resulted in the seizure of various suspected narcotics, including fentanyl, methamphetamine and cocaine. a local emergency has been declared in sonoma county as the point fire continues to burn. that fire broke out sunday afternoon near

healdsburg forcing hundreds of people to evacuate. that fire has since burned a little more than 1200 acres and is at 20% containment county officials say declaring a local emergency allows the county to request state in federal assistance for response and recovery efforts. kron 4 charles clifford has more on the fire burning in the north bay. >>the north bay fire crews have made good progress on containing this fire. but we have learned that to residential structures have been destroyed. and one firefighter has been injured. >>cal fire says that sunday night one firefighter was injured while working in a remote area of the point fire. this is video showing a sonoma county sheriff's office helicopter airlifting him out of the burn zone. it's unclear how he was hurt. but cal fire says his injuries are non-life-threatening on monday. calm winds and cooler temperatures helped crews build containment lines and knocked down hot spots around the burn zone. more than 400 firefighters, 10 fire engines, 10 bulldozers and 4 helicopters have been assigned to work on this place, which

california have been growing since saturday. the sites fire in colusa county has grown nearly 4500 acres. 0% contained. the national weather service is warning smoke from this fire is heading into the north bay and people who are sensitive to smoke or have respiratory issues are advised to stay indoors and keep their windows and doors closed in southern california. the post fire has grown to about 16,000 acres. it started on saturday night near the 5, just west of lancaster and south of bakersfield. it is 20% contained and farther east and san bernardino county, the hysteria fire has exploded to more than 1100 acres. but it's now at more than 70% containment. it has been burning near highway one. 73 and has prompted evacuation warnings. not clear how the fire began. winds are being blamed for how quickly this fire has been moving and be

slow county. are still looking at a red flag warning continuing to least tomorrow morning. humidity has been really dry. some places down the teens, even the single this afternoon. a pretty dry out there tonight. mostly clear. we may see a return, a couple of patches of coastal fog out toward the beaches tomorrow, mostly sunny, warm and a bit hazy by tomorrow afternoon with some of that smoke cooler mid week with more fog, low clouds on the way and then a warmer weekend. oz headed our way to temperatures. we've got 50's along the immediate coastline. still 70, a very pleasant san jose in mountain view specially for this hour. 72 in concord is 73 degrees in the bottom. and 63 degrees napa. the pattern county state, we've got one trough of low pressure pushing to the east and then again, another one just off the coastline that's approaching the bay area. i think overall the trend will be toward more that onshore breeze. and that some good news that's going to really bring up the road relative humidity. that means it's going to be hard for those fires to burn as fast. and that's good news for the firefighters. temperatures around the bay are breaking down like this tomorrow. a lot of 60's in the san francisco

about 66 in downtown about 60 of pacifica with some fog moving in along the coastline. that is a good sign. 59 in half moon bay inside the bay see those temperatures nice and warm 70 want to foster city about 72 in san carlos, the south bay enjoying some temperatures up in the 70's and 80's by tomorrow afternoon, east bay mid to upper 80's. it looks like some warm weather. they're settling in. 76 in hayward, 70 new union city about roggen. 74 and sunny in san leandro. hazy in the north remember that winds, which i think that's going to push some of that smoke in direction. so you may see some of that in the napa valley for tomorrow. watch out for that. also, santa rosa. yeah, you're probably gonna see some smoke in your direction as well. so little hazy in parts of the north bay in parts of the east bay. i think by tomorrow afternoon, here's your 10 attend the temperatures cooling down as we head toward wednesday thursday, the first day of summer coming our way when, you know, just on cue, high pressure builds back in this next weekend. we're talking about temperatures up. maybe the mid-nineties by saturday. so really heating up again. a lawsuit on behalf of 11

alleged victims has been filed against the alum rock union elementary school district. >>it claims the current interim superintendent and former staff conspired to cover up abuse by a former teacher. israel. santiago was a music teacher at adelante dual language academy. he's accused of sexually abusing 10 students at the school. according to the lawsuit, the staff was aware of a string of complaints against him but still transferred him. other schools in the district. santiago continued to teach for nearly a decade before he was charged in 2022. since then, a total of 4 lawsuits have been filed against the district. we have reached out to them for comment, but so far have not heard back. a police officer was hurt while trying to help a person was hit by a vehicle during a sideshow in san jose. this all happened saturday evening near santana row. when a sideshow spectator was struck by a reckless sideshow. driver. the person hurt flagged down a reserve officer to help when the officer attempted to help the victim. people did. this started smashing his patrol

car, smashing the windshield, hitting the side windows. the side show was eventually broken up once more police units arrived. one arrest has been made at the officer suffered minor injuries and the patrol car was seriously damaged. the city of san jose moving forward with a plan to remove trash from homeless encampments near waterways. the san francisco bay regional water, quality control board green-lit the plan last week includes moving homeless residents away from waterways as more housing becomes available and then blocking the areas with barriers and signage. this puts the city in compliance with environmental regulations. san jose's deadline to reach 100% trash production has also been pushed back from now june 2025. to december of 2025. happening tuesday. officials in san francisco will vote on design changes to the controversial bike lane on valencia street in the mission. the san francisco municipal transportation agency says it's going to be a meeting and talking with

people about the running bike lane. there will be a a vote on shifting the plan to a side running lane. instead. this, of course, comes after business owners threaten a lawsuit back in february saying that the bike cause a lot of issues like making them lose money and customers. if the project is approved construction of the design could take weeks. they are working with local shop owners to figure out when might be the best time to do this work. debates over the ongoing war in gaza now reaching a national park, a team of expert rock climbers hung a banner reading, stop the genocide for most, you know, 70's national parks, elk, happy 10. they're planning to keep the banner up until tuesday afternoon, which means they're going to be spending the night on the wall, sleeping in a small ledge. the group says they're demanding israel and the u.s. to stop the genocide in gaza and end the israeli occupation of palestine. we have reached out

police are looking for a group of people involved in a sideshow who damaged an officer's patrol vehicle and injured an officer saturday night. >>kron four's rob nesbitt reports on what took place in the west san jose neighborhood. >>in this cell phone video you can hear. windshield of this police car being kicked in near santana row in san jose just before 07:00pm saturday. according to san jose police, the officer was responding to reports of a person being

struck by a reckless sideshow driver. but the sideshow participants became reckless towards the responding officer who suffered minor injuries. acting police chief paul joseph saying, quote, this conduct is unacceptable and will not be tolerated in our city detectives in crime analyst from our real time intelligence center are actively following up to identify all those responsible to see one of our officers attacked by an out of control mob while in the process of trying to help a seriously injured person is truly deplorable. chief joseph says the sideshows broken up once more police units arrived. mayor matt mahan responded to the weekend crime saying, quote, it's incomprehensible to me how someone could stop an emergency vehicle from coming to someone's aid. our police department is in the process of determining the identity of everyone involved this weekend and we will hold accountable the people who plan participate and help proliferate these dangerous events in san jose. rob nesbitt kron. 4 news. >>the issue of retail theft was once again front and center at the state capitol on

monday. democratic leaders moving forward with controversial amendments to cancel several bipartisan retail that bills if voters approve a ballot measure to reform prop 47 during the upcoming election. capitol correspondent eytan wallace explains. most democratic leaders are doubling down on their plan, but one powerful democratic assembly member. he's come out against it. >>while the democrat coming out against these proposed amendment is none other than assembly public safety committee chair kevin mccarty. he calls these proposed amendments which remember were introduced by members of his own party. a poison pill. democratic assemblymember kevin mccarty seen in conversation on the assembly floor as lawmakers begin a new week. but he was nowhere to be found as the senate appropriations committee took up a package of bills to address retail theft. mccarty had authored one of 7 retail theft bills. the committee was supposed to take up, but then this happened party. he has paid his bill.

>>we will not be hearing it mccarty ended up removing his bill before it came up. his bill would have helped to create a database for retailers to report theft. other bills in the package include want to add a penalty up to 3 years in prison for someone found to have stolen property with the intent to resell and want to expand the california highway patrol property crimes task force mccarthy removed his support for the package because he does not agree with the plan by democratic leaders to at amendments to it. that would cancel several the retail theft bills. if voters approve a ballot measure to reform prop 47, the 2014 voter approved a law that turned some nonviolent that some crimes from felonies. >>to misdemeanors, including retail theft, when the items stolen are valued at less than $950. in a statement, mccarty said, unfortunately, i cannot support the retail touts package which contains my retail theft accountability bill ab 17 94 with the poison pill non operative amendments included republicans echoing a similar message. nonsense.

>>these build a good bills. if they didn't have that in or opt ability class and you have full full support from everybody. and that would be a bipartisan bill. but in the end, democrats on the committee voted in favor of the amendment, arguing the legislature's proposal does not go hand in hand with the ballot measure to reform prop 47. they believe that measure will lead to mass incarceration opposite of what they say. their bills will do solutions to retail crime and endeavors to preserve criminal justice reforms that have been affected necessary steps retail well, not returning to overly proven not to work. >>and we could go through this all over again on wednesday when the assembly appropriations committee takes up other retail theft bills reporting at the state reporting at the state capitol. wallace kron. 4 news.

us surgeon general is calling for warning labels on social media sites, warning children to mental health harms when using the platforms congress would need to approve a warning labels similar to those found on cigarette boxes. our washington correspondent basil john reports on the reaction to the surgeon general's op-ed. >>in an op-ed in the new york times, us surgeon general vivek murthy call for social media companies to set up warning labels on their apps and websites like those you see on cigarette boxes, writing their use is associated with significant mental health harms for kids. these harms to kids have got to stop julie with mothers against media addiction says this is an important step forward spending endless hours on screens is not it. doctor

includes cuts that would take away much of their funding. on monday, we heard from one resident who says without one of these outreach programs she would still be unhoused kron four's lezla gooden has the story. >>reena aguilar is a volunteer with the southeastern tip association called the bay area home for 17 years. and nearly a year ago, she was battling homelessness. saw it. i was suffering a lot of harassment to where i was living was very depressed. was, you here full of not having a place to live. reyna says this program under the housing rights committee of san francisco. it's how she was able to navigate the challenges of securing housing and within mayor london breed's proposed budget cuts which includes outreach efforts. this is a program that could lose its funding. and we i mean, and she needs to know there are a lot of families visit them. of anything fiona that depend on

point fire in sonoma county creating unhealthy air quality in parts of the bay area. a spare the air alert has been extended to discuss those conditions as well as how you can stay safe. kron four's justine waltman spoke with tina landis from the bay area. air quality management district. >>so what parts of the bay area are experiencing this bad air quality right now because of the point fire. >>so really, unhealthy air quality is only around that right around the fire are seeing moderate to good air quality throughout the rest of the bay area. but that can change quickly. this fire is only a 20% containment right now. the winds are shifting. so. you know, it's be moving into different areas. and intensity could could rise with that smoke. so folks should be vigilant and pay

attention to to up. a fire and smoke map will show you local air quality readings in your region and do expect air quality to get worse throughout the week. >>right now where we have the spare the air alert in effect through today through midnight. and then we're downgrading that to an air quality advisory for tomorrow because we're expecting. >>this impact to lessen over time. but like i said, that is unpredictable due to the fire contained levels. and how often do you make those assessments of like how to change the ranking that you give it. >>their holiday forecasters are constantly monitoring the fires and the smoke that's being put out. so, you know, we're watching it on an hourly basis minute by minute, really to make sure those conditions are changing. and that's not impacting ground level. air station. >>and so here we are june 17th. we're barely starting off summer here are already dealing with air quality issues because of wildfires. we've got a long way to go here during our fire season.

the la county department of public health has revealed it was targeted by hackers early this year. the personal information of more than 200,000 people was potentially compromised. erin myers is the story in hollywood. >>the department of public health made the announcement on friday. we are told this phishing attack happened months ago, though. and it did compromise more than 200,000 people's personal information. attack happened back in february between february 19th and 20th. the hacker was able to get log in 53 employees with the department discovered what happened. they disabled the impacted e-mail accounts, reset and re image to the

scathing report published by the sacramento county grand jury revealing failures in the county schools. investigation showed sacramento city unified schools is reportedly neglecting its students in special education. mason morrow has more. >>simply put this report says the sacramento city unified school district is failing its students who are in special education. but according to the report, this is really nothing new, i guess over the past few years, the california department of education has found the district to be out of compliance with the special
