that's right, carol holiday get that forecast. good morning, john. yeah means it's probably feel calmer out there today. nice for the middle of the week. also nice for your last day of spring to be getting a break from the heat today. we are going to be seeing daytime highs. the very coolest that they're going to be this forecast. let's get a look outside at that sunrise this morning from mount tam, a little bit of low gray sweeping in from the coastline that cool coastal air came through, really swept up a lot of that haze yesterday helping a sell out a lot with the air. quality visibility is fine unless you're up in some of those hillsides where you're running into that low cloud cover winds from the coastline will continue today and having that moderating effect on temperatures. currently we're sitting in the 50's for most spots, oakland and concord at 55 degrees. some 40's up in the north bay nevado being a little bit chilly down at 43 degrees later today. we will be seeing daytime highs in the 60's to 70's for most of us. only a few low 80's for the stunt land. all right, john, thank you for that. move in today and not seen major

delays. >> i mention today's juneteenth. so not a lot of traffic forming 10 minute ride. everybody headed into the city. san mateo bridge just short of 14, 80 to 101, richmond center fell about 6 minutes and the golden gate bridge. 37 of the tolls, 19 minute ride. all right. james, back to you. >> here, ladies and gentlemen, it is with great sadness that we announce that san francisco giants legend and hall of famer willie mays passed away peacefully this afternoon at the age of 93. please join us in a moment of silence as we remember willie mae. >> and we all say goodbye now to this say, hey, kid, was major league baseball honoring willie mays at a game last night. the former giants and hall of famer passed away yesterday afternoon at the age of 93 kron. 4 sports director jason dumas has more on his legacy. >> considered perhaps the greatest player to ever play

the game. willie mays was already a superstar. when the giants moved to san francisco from new york in 1958. but even before he was a giant mays played 3 seasons in the leagues helping lead the birmingham black barons. minute in 1948. after the giants beat out multiple teams to sign him. the say hey, kid was brought up midway through the 1951 season. his debut was in auspices as he started his major league for 12. but on his 13th, that bad made hit a home run off. future hall of famer warren spahn and the rest is history. mays was a major contributor in the giant historic run to catch the dodgers in the 1951 national league pennant race winning the league's rookie of the year war in the deciding playoff game. mays was on deck when bobby thompson, his shot heard around the world to take the pennant and propel the giants into the world series.

career homers. the record tying 12 gold glove and also a record tying 24th all-star game appearances prompting ted williams to say they invented the all-star game for willie made the say, hey, kid was inducted into baseball's hall of fame in 1979. >> his first year on the ballot, possibly no superstar in the history of baseball brought more joy to the field. and willie, we'll also play with a flair and reverence unmatched in the history of the game, his legacy in giants in baseball lore is none more apparent. then his statue that stands gateway. oracle park, the official address. 24 willie mays plaza. >> and at that there is now a growing memorial this morning. yeah. at the feet of the statute, willie mays, he was beloved by giants fans, young and old and for anybody who met him, they'll tell you had

giants games and i made sure to put this right next to my briefcase this morning. i have this jersey. i've had it for years. i wear to games. and in fact, my son also has the same jersey, not many athletes get jalayne jean. i mean, athletes, they come and go, but he is baseball royalty. even president barack obama chimed in on social media saying that he was delighted to spend so much time with willie mays and in 2015. he awarded willie mays, the presidential medal of freedom. we will try to get reaction from fans as they arrived this morning. but look at that. isn't that beautiful? willie mays? royalty? i mean, we have barry bonds and barry bonds is shivering. and willie mays shadow. honestly, bill, i was fine until he said he had his son. >> it's just so it's just so sweet. and so moving that like

now we want to give you the latest on the wildfires in the bay area. crews making progress on the point fire. this one is burning, as we've told you, near lake sonoma. >> containment remember yesterday, 40 now 50% contained. it started sunday spread to 1200 acres within 24 hours. 2 homes have been destroyed and one firefighter injured. >> well, and air quality advisory is now in effect due to the poor air quality from

nearby wildfires. officials say that residents may see and smell smoke, especially up in sonoma, napa and solano counties throughout the north bay today. so just keep that in mind, right? so this is all continuing coverage because, you know, the smoke has been a problem. i feel like a breeze and a little better this morning at about visibility. john, what are you see? yeah, we're definitely looking at improvements today the air quality management district in for good reason did extend that their quality. >> advisory into today. but compared to yesterday, we're doing better. this is your look outside right here from mount tam. and as you can see, we do have this the lincoln of low grade that has pushed on in those westerly winds could not have done more for cleaned up the air quality, cool this down a little bit and along with it also brought in some less parched air. all that just helped a little bit with fire danger anyways. you can see that the very worst of air quality is actually in the la metro area due to the fire burning down there. we do have the evidence of some lingering haze and a few areas of the bay. but for the most part, we have seen major improvements

surface smoke at this point has been a just or right back up into the central valley and north of sacramento at that today, those westerly winds are going to keep it up that direction. now tomorrow, i do believe we could see a little bit of it diffusing up into the north bay and inland east bay, especially. but we are seeing huge improvements. that's for sure. so if you have respiratory conditions, you'll likely noticing just breathing a little easier today. now skies will clear out really nicely once this morning fog kind of burns off low pressure just adjacent to us, bringing our most mild day of this forecast and fittingly. so on your last day of spring, winds from the west will continue today helping to keep that moderating force on our temperatures. today's highs in the 50's to 60's for san francisco and along the coastline. pacifica at 59 degrees today. millbrae at 67 on the peninsula. mostly 70's from san mountain view any to the south bay. a lot of 70's as well. san jose at 77 today, fremont and union city low

6.18, and east bay. oakland voters have 2 big decisions to make this november whether to keep the mayor. >> and the district attorney both mayor sheng thao in alameda county da pamela price are up for recall. let's go to kron four's michael thomas live in oakland with the latest. good morning, michael. >> hey, good morning, everyone. the efforts to remove oakland mayor sheng thao begin earlier this year and it said more than 40,000 signatures were gathered for this. now it's moved on to the city council for them to decide if they're going to put it on the ballot this november. next to alameda county, pamela price recalled. take a look. this is video up on your screen is a break. it all down now. the register's office did verify with us here at kron 4 that those signatures were valid to move it forward. now sitting with the city council who is set to meet on july second at that point, they'll decide on the official voting date for this recall. however, it will more than likely be in november to save money. now, those behind the recall say the main reason for the removal is due to a

surge in crime, homelessness and the firing of former oakland police chief lebron armstrong. the mayor, however, says oakland police crime stats show that crime is down 17% over the last 3 years. and 34% compared to last year. the mayor is recalled well by the people. a special election will be held to choose replacement. as we mentioned, this all comes after the recall efforts of more than 70,000 verified signatures gathered and turned in for alameda county district attorney pamela price. she said to be recalled in november on the ballot this meaning that the residents of oakland you have to make some tough decisions of 2 major leaders for the area. now back out here live, there's a press conference that is set for around 11 o'clocn this morning. we're planning to be there. so as we get more information, we'll keep you updated. but that is the very latest here oakland. i'm michael thomas will send it back to you to live in the studio. michael, thank you. >> time now is 6.20, and the richmond city council approved putting a measure on the ballot that would increase

taxes on the chevron refinery. it's called the polluters pay initiative. we'll see that up for a vote. it would create a new tax on oil refining within the city. supporters claim that the tax would generate 60 to 90 million dollars per year. that could be used to pay for environmental cleanup and health services. chevron says that they're already the biggest taxpayer and employer in richmond and they say this measure could make it difficult for them to modernize the refinery, invest in the community. starting next month. you can trade in your old car for $1500. the bay area air quality management district is offering this deal to improve air quality. they say that the older cars are bigger polluters and the new ones to be eligible. your car has to be a 1998 model or older. well, a catering company used by airline is now apologizing after a passenger headed to san francisco found blade. >> in their food. so take a

look. the passenger took this picture. this was on air india flight again to san francisco in the catering company says that blade is part of a vegetable processing machine. they say they're going to be strengthening their inspections going forward. san francisco's ambassadors francisco's ambassadors program is at risk of being mayor's approval of recent budget proposals. san francisco city leaders and community groups are speaking out now saying they want to say that program. >> thanks. jus i am no longer homeless and currently living in london shelters. and i'm not going to stay there forever. i'm also trying to transition into more permanent housing, which is one of my of the program, provides safety escorts helps neighbors report crimes and helps people find housing and job opportunities. >> it serves multi-lingual communities, but san francisco's facing an 800 million dollar budget deficit. and the mayor says some changes to that program are necessary. >> goal is to make sure none of these ambassadors

>> we're back at 6.25. in the east bay, a playground project in oakland donated by steph and ayesha curry has been vandalized. so the school district sent photos of the damage done at global family elementary school over the weekend. the vandals tore apart. lanterns ripped out the irrigation system and broke all the wooden benches. the playground was one of the major additions to the campus during a renovation project years ago. >> in the east bay, a police chase ends in a fiery crash and 2 suspects on the loose. this happened yesterday morning in san leandro about 2.30, in the morning. there was an auto burglary. police got there. they found 2 cars had been burglarized and they saw 3 people and they chased them on to 80 and then those people lost control near 20th avenue off-ramp in oakland. you can see what happened there. car caught fire and that was a big crash. now, one a suspect has been caught

into the city today is june teens. so not seen a lot of travelers out there. 14 minutes on the san mateo bridge, a richmond, sandra fell about 11 golden gate bridge 30. some of the tolls. 19 minutes. all right. james, back to you. thank you. reyna this morning, we continue to remember and honor the legacy of willie mays, as you probably heard by now, he passed away yesterday afternoon at the age of 93. >> kron 4 sports director jason dumas takes a look back. we continue to honor willie gacy not only as a ballplayer, but as a man who broke barriers in transcended the world of sports. >> as a player, his talent was generational. during his 23 year. major league playing career mays was named most valuable player twice first as a new york giant in 1954. and then as the san francisco giant in 1965, he holds the all-time record for put out by an outfielder with a career total of 7,095. he won 12 gold

gloves in center field and appeared in get this 24 all-star games. i'm not done. he led the league in home runs for time, stolen bases for time slugging percentage 5 times total bases. 3 times in triple street times. he won. he was 3rd on the all-time home run list with 660 until 2003, when godson, barry bonds past him. but like i said, his biggest impact went beyond sports. >> i'm jason dumas kron.i4 sports. >> he was larger than life and theri is a bigger than life memory of willie mays right there at the ballpark with his stature. yeah. and a growing memorial at his feet and out there live for us now is kron four's will tran at oracle park will. >> well, a lot of people are showing up this morning. in fact, they came out late yesterday afternoon when the news broke that willie howard mayes junior. is no longer with us at 93 years old. what

a life. i mean, icahn does not begin to describe and you can see the flowers, the bobblehead jerseys at the statue at 24 willie mays plaza. lot of people jogging by looking over taking a pictures there moving along. in fact, before i give you my personal remembrance of willie mays, i want to talk to you, young lady. i you go around. >> and it seems like you are live streaming. why was it so important you to be here? >> well, first of all, this is juneteenth. and i figured the best way to her represent juneteenth today. instead of just a day off is to come by in video. this for people that don't live in san francisco to see that we have our very own statue. we have reference to willie mays and just what a legend. what barrier. yes, he did. yes, he did. he had to start off the really, but look, this is how you. so i'm just really grateful to be a

part of this culture representing. our very own. when you found out the news, i don't know if you're a baseball fan, but he transcends his sport. >> when you found out this is one of those moments when and where you where you will always remember. well, i was driving home from work last night along the berkley school of theology. and i heard the news and i wanted to drive over here. but i was so tired. i just got out of class actually after 9 o'clock. so i figured this morning, why not? not? thank you so much for sharing your experience thank you so much. all that you spent a moment. a lot of people are having quiet moments with willie mays. this is as close as many people. we'll get to willie mays. i fortunately was a little bit closer on a couple of occasions. let me quickly show you a picture of willie mays and i this is back in 2019 at a special giants event but actually ran across in the year before at the giants season home opener. when i was just at at the bottom of the

basement just walking around and then he stopped me goes, hey. i watch you on tv this morning and my knees buckled. i couldn't believe that the great willie mays, even watches kron even watches me and even took a moment to stop and say hello and following year. we spent some time together before the event is laughing and joking and he was talking about my hometown of seattle and help seattle was so wonderful to him. you cannot begin to describe willie mayes junior, but so many people are trying to describe him. president barack obama actually gave him the presidential medal of freedom back in 2015, the accolades go on and on and on. it will be the end of our newscast before i finish all of the accolades. but as we move on in the morning, i just want to show you the tributes. they're very subtle. they're very powerful. yes, a lot of people are changing their profile pictures. but did you know check this out? so this statue

mays is always one of the most sought after players for visitors. he was truly beloved here in cooperstown in been a few years since he's able to come back obviously had some health issues in recent years that that preclude him from coming back here. but we still heard from him regularly. >> holiday cards and we know how much he meant to the people that come to cooperstown. i mean, when people are walking into the blackout, they're going around the museum. but they are talking about willie mays and truly one the greatest players ever to play the game and they want to see his plaque or they want to see is artifacts and there's really no way to put into words what he meant. but now iathink people who welcome to cooperstown know it and that they feel. karen lee. >> and actually in the process now of moving the willie mays plaque from cooperstown to alabama for the mlb game at rickwood field >> very will always cherish

across the state. the worst of smoke is north of sacramento up in the central valley. and we are seeing that sea breeze for the most part, blocking out that cool that rather that smoke with that cool ocean air from pushing into the bay area. tomorrow morning, though, i fully expect some of it to defuse our direction, especially in the north bay in the inland east bay. so look out for that potential tortures thursday. as of right now, skies are clear. we do have that low stratus that your marine layer that's pushed in and a very, very weak cold front that is just straight across the region. this contributing to today being the coolest day of the forecast. just so happens to be your last day of spring. so fittingly, so to finish the season on a mild note, winds will continue through the afternoon having that nice sweeping effect. cooling us down across the bay tomorrow. we'll start to see temperatures rebounding for your first day of summer. and your first weekend of summer is going to be a scorcher. now 50's to 60's for your highs in sf and at the coastline today. lot of 60's 70's to low 80's

>> thank you. reyna 6.47. is the time of east bay. 2 people are dead and 2 others are injured after a shooting in richmond. police say they responded to reports of someone being shot at about 4 o'clock yesterday afternoon in the area, pennsylvania avenue and 7th street. police say that person died at the scene. 3 others went to the hospital and one of them died. there. >> police are investigating what led up to that shooting. there's no word yet on any arrests in san francisco. police say the juvenile was seriously hurt after getting shot on the catcher in the castro. >> last night, this video from the citizen app shows heavy police presence there just outside of a business in the area of church and market streets. police say the shooting happened shortly after 9 o'clock. have arrested no one we'll keep you updated, though. >> neighbors are speaking out against a project that's being proposed by the castro valley unified school district. the 14 million dollar project involves building 4 fields

been alone this month. they also identified at least 18 more suspected cases of shigella. and there are steps that can be taken to better protect the homeless community that they would like to do in this case. >> we are increasing the number of the portable toilets that are available in both locations and making sure that there are sufficient. and are doing regular cleaning of those portable toilets. we're also include increasing the number of hand washing stations that are available and making sure that those are cleaned and disinfected properly. and we are beginning to supply drinking water and wash water to folks so that they can stay clean and avoid transmission of this disease. >> the santa clara county public health department says that they're actively going into homeless encampments now to provide testing kits and identify cases. >> well, over the south bay, the san jose metro area is apparently the least affordable metro area in the entire nation. and that's the conclusion of this year's silicon valley pain index

report. this is the 5th year in that the san jose state's human rights institute is put this report together. it highlights persistent inequities in the region, including homelessness and income inequality. some notable findings include the fact that 46% of people laid off in the tech sector over the last year. were women. it also found the number of homeless students from kindergarten to high school almost tripled since 2020. >> just think about that in the richest country in the richest that country we have 300, almost 300 homeless students get our act and we have 900 in the east side union school district up from 300. in the whole county, 3,000 homeless students. who are those folks? 82% are black latinx and native american. >> well, a group is urging the region to make significant changes to improve quality of life for all residents.

>> the order of malta clinic in oakland is reopening today. it's going to have a ribbon cutting at 10 o'clock this morning and then be open for services in the 2100 block of harrison street in oakland. they focus on people who are uninsured since 2008, they've seen more than 50,000 patients and their hopefully doping did double that to 10,000 a year. now that they'll be open. today is juneteenth a federal holiday that commemorates the emancipation of enslaved people here in this country. the oakland museum, we'll celebrate with a cookout. one of the organizers says that everybody is welcome. >> the oakland garden will be fully taken over with a town wide celebration of freedom. we're celebrating juneteenth. >> with a cookout, a is giving us the vibes of a quintessential black

today we continue to honor the life and legacy of bay area. baseball legend willie mays. we'll joined the leagues, birmingham barons at this. get this the at the age of 16. before the new york giants purchased his contract in 1950 and after winning rookie of the year. and it 51 willie mays, then joined and served in the u.s. army from 52 to 54. and then rejoined the giants. after that. and in 2015, mays was awarded the presidential medal of freedom for president barack obama for his pivotal role during the civil rights movement. >> and here is what president obama had to say on social media that willie mays wasn't just a singular athlete, blessed with an unmatched combination of grace, scale and power. he was also a wonderfully warm and generous person and an inspiration to an entire generation.
