>> that was nothing in the game of baseball. willie mays could not do better than any by the bills. >> willie mays passing away at the age of 93 and the bay area today remembers the greatest player to ever wear a giants uniform. >> from the area's local news station, you're watching the kron. 4 morning news at 7. >> and so honored to bring you the news today and give you more perspective on willie mays and we'll do that throughout the morning. good morning. i'm darya and i'm james. before we get to all of that special coverage, though, let's get an update on weather and traffic. we've got john starting that those things off

this hour. hey, john, hey, there we are looking at a day today. that is going to be a gorgeous one to step outside. a lot of people do have juneteenth off today. we've seen that in the roads being so calm. >> so maybe of some extra time to get out there. maybe it's oracle park or maybe it's just enjoy that cool sunshine. we'll see elsewhere right now. little bit of cloud cover overhead. a product of that seabreeze that pushed in yesterday and resulted in their quality improving today and temperatures a little more comfortable. we're seeing visibility just fine and winds from the west really helped to sweep some of that smoke and haze out. so today is improved in so many ways, just more comfortable and easier to breathe 40's to 50's for us. alameda redwood city at 54 57 wall. some 40's up in the north bay later on today. look for to temperatures that will really in the the 60's to 70's for most areas. only a few low 80's for the stunt lent right thank you for that. well, we've got a pretty light commute this morning. we have. >> one accident along 5.80, in the last hour. but that's

already clear the nominee arrived. everybody heading into the city this morning. no traffic building to the toll plaza. 15 minutes in detail. bridge 80 to 101, richmond center fell about 12 minutes and the golden gate bridge. 37 of the tolls 20 minute ride darya. james, back to you. >> is in man. it is with great sadness that we announce that san francisco giants legend and hall of famer willie mays. >> passed away peacefully this afternoon at the age of 93. please join us in a moment of silence as we remember willie mae. >> and there you can see major league baseball honoring willie mays and a game last night. the former giants and hall of famer, as we just said, passed with the age of 93 and kron four's sports director jason dumas has more now on his legacy. >> considered perhaps the greatest player to ever play the game. willie mays was already a superstar. when the

giants moved to san francisco from new york in 1958. but even before he was a giant mays played 3 seasons in the leagues helping lead the birmingham black barons, the planet in 1948. after the giants beat out multiple teams to sign him. the say hey, kid was brought up midway through the 1951 season. his debut was in auspices as he started his major league for 12. but on his 13th, that bad made hit a home run off. future hall of famer warren spahn and the rest is history. mays was a major contributor and the giants historic run to catch the dodgers in the 1951 national league pennant race winning the league's rookie of the year award in the deciding playoff game. mays was on deck when bobby thompson, shot, heard around the world to take dependent and propel the giants into the world

12 gold glove and also a record tying 24th all-star game appearances prompting ted williams to say they invented the all-star game for willie made the say, hey, kid was inducted into baseball's hall of fame in 1979. >> his first year on the ballot, possibly no superstar in the history of baseball brought more joy to the field. and willie, we'll also play with a flair and it reverence unmatched in the history of the game. his legacy in giants in baseball lore is none more apparent. then his statue that stands gateway. oracle park, the official address. 24 willie mays plaza. >> and fans are flocking this morning to that statue in san francisco. as we're watching that retrospective piece by jason, great piece. by the way, we were commenting, you know, when the giants moved to san francisco and you heard the trying move into san francisco and how they talk back then that's actually part of how make got his nickname,

the say, hey, because back then it was common to say. >> say and then start your sentence. and he always had a habit of greeting people by saying say, hey, so in that honor, let's go out park and say, hey, and good morning. >> how amazing is that little tidbit right there. so you can see the statue right behind me. a lot of people walking by this morning quickly taking a picture when the news broke late yesterday afternoon. of course, they all flock to oracle. they laid flowers right at the feet of willie mays right bobbleheads. there's jersey candles are burning right now. it got so. so many people showed up that they actually brought out san francisco giants security. in fact, we'll quickly show you security right there. they're making sure that people don't get too carried away and then

climb on the statue to take a picture. and of course, nobody would really blame. then they want to feel so close to willie mays. but you know what? we want to preserve the statue for generations to come. couple years ago, i met willie mays. i will never forget it. >> and he is special. not just to me, not just special to the bay area and the giants to the world. president obama has chimed in on willie mays is well actually allowed him to hop on air force one. how cool is that? that the 2 on air force one. >> talking baseball talking about life and former president barack obama even said to willie mays that if it were not for you, there's no way i would be president, of course, being the first african-american president in united states history. 2015 awarded the presidential medal of freedom. so a lot of people are chiming in. get this. obviously he was a baseball player, but he transcends sports. i got a chance to talk to a fan this morning. his

death will be mazes death brought back all kinds of memories of his mother. >> it made me think my mom. she's in one day. got me to be a giants fan. first. took me to see. will he play on 16th? and bryant is still stadium. before counts depart. and i've been a giants fan, every sense because of willie mays. because it really weighs in cost more important because of month. >> so you're you're thinking about your mom and willie mays absolute her favorite player. her favorite play about 4. >> and that woman there you might be able to see she's wiping her eyes. that's how you emotional. >> willie, howard mayes junior. his death is making the world. i mean, 93 years old. what a legacy. but even for him, it does not seem long. and the accolades go on and on and on 6 all-time in home runs at 660. i mean,

ballparks back then were geared towards the pictures. anyone home runs not like in the 90's and even then he racked up 660 home runs 20 straight all-star appearances. 24 altogether, 2 time mvp, icon doesn't even begin to describe him. there are legends like bonds, jeter, buster posey. are very few who are baseball royalty. and i brought this out. i've been saying it all morning. i'm so proud to wear this. so many people are wearing it this morning as well. so everybody don't be surprised if you go into the office and even your ceo bas might be rocking a willie mays, jersey. that's how special he is. a lot of people stopping by a look at this. that just stopping by taking pictures of the statue gone but never forgotten. >> back to i love that. we

destroyed 2 homes. one firefighter was injured, but they are expected to be okay. when air quality advisory is now in effect because of the poor air quality right up there near the wildfires. officials say the residents may see and smell smoke across sonoma, napa and solano counties. >> throughout the day today, and that's certainly something opthat john has been tracking i the weather center and it's all dependent on the winds where the winds blow. it's those communities downwind that are going to get that low poor air quality. let's take a peek at that. and the temperatures high, john. yeah, that wind yesterday came to our rescue in so many ways the whole switch up in direction. >> that has pushed in a little bit of a low grade that we're seeing above half moon bay this morning in about a lot of the rest of the bay area, too. not the sunniest day at the coast, but we'll take it if it means easier, breathe and for us as well as a much more comfortable last day of spring today. our worst of air quality is definitely in the la metro area was booming in on the bay area. good to moderate still exists. the bay area air quality management still district does still have

a statement in place for the bay area, including an air quality advisory out here right now. but we have seen big improvements and you can see that westerly wind pushing up that smoke back into the northern end of the central valley. it's going to stay up there today, although tomorrow i expect some of that smoke to defuse back into the north end of the bay area as well as the interior east bay. so anticipate a bit more of an impact of smoke into the latter half of the week. now, skies are relatively clear for most of us anyways. little bit of that marine layer, low gray sitting around the golden gate itself. very weak. low pressure area is just adjacent to us. currently, this has enough with it to create a little bit of a lift as well. that's also helping to clean up some of our air and contributing to this mild juneteenth and last day of spring today. and if you want to get outside today is a great day to do it. winds are present but not too too much. we're seeing 15 to 20 miles per hour gusts and directly from the coastline having that nice moderating effect on temperatures 50's to 60's in

the city and at the coast today. maybe not your best coastal day. but if you want to hang out along the bay shore, you're going to have that nice, comfortable range of mid 70's with the redwood city at 74 south bay temperatures, mid 70's in santa clara and even the inland east bay. double in at 74 degrees today. walnut creek danville at 76 degrees. oakland, san leandro, richmond at 67 while vacaville and fairfield in the low to mid 80's for your highs tomorrow. first day of summer, temperatures start to rebound a little bit by the first weekend of the new season. we are officially hot inland again with highs back in the 90's and 80's along the shore of the bay right now. all right. on eve of that on this juneteenth, we've got pretty light conditions out there traveling across the bay area. >> along 80 right now, 60 minute ride slow down when she had berkeley. once you get past that smooth sailing 9 minutes into the city right now that looks great. 70 overs just short of 16 minutes. it's a 80 to 101, one on the south bay still pretty green across

the board. the south bay all the way stores peninsula. 30 minute ride. 85 to menlo park selling adult animal. pete about 22 minutes. 5, 18, 8.80, are both clear. all right. james, back to you. >> thank you very much. rain 7.17, is the time in east bay. oakland voters have 2 big decisions to make this november and it involves the mayor and the district attorney. yeah. both the mayor sheng thao and alameda county da pamela price are up for a recall kron four's. michael thomas live in oakland with the latest on all this. good morning, michael. >> hey, good morning, everyone. these efforts to remove oakland mayor sheng thao have really been in effect since the beginning of this year. and it said more than 40,000 signatures were actually gathered for it. now it's moved on to the oakland city council. they've got to decide if it's going to be on the ballot this november, which time the recall for the alameda county district attorney pamela price is also put on that ballot. take a look. this is video we've got up on your screen now. the register's office says that these signatures were valid,

unverified, which moves the entire situation over to the oakland city council. that group is set to meet on july 2nd, which point they will decide on when the recall will be voted on, which will more than likely happen in november. those behind the recall say the main reason for the removal is due to the surge in crime. homelessness in the firing. former oakland police chief leronne armstrong. the mayor, however, says that open police crime stats show crime is down 17% over the last 3 years. 34% compared to last year. the mayor is recalled. well, there will be a special election which is held to choose her replacement. and this is also all coming after the recall efforts of more than 70,000 verified signatures were gathered and turned in for alameda county district attorney pamela price to be recalled, which is now set to be on that november ballot. so as james and ari above mentioned, there is a lot at stake this year when it comes to the voters and who they decide to put in charge in these key roles of leadership for oakland and the alameda

county. back out here live. there is a press conference is set later this morning. we're going to have a team there. so we'll continue to bring you the latest coverage. but that is the very latest this morning here in oakland michael thomas. i will send it back to you to live in the studio. thank you, michael. 7.19, is the time in the richmond city council has approved a measure on the november ballot that you'll see that would increase taxes. >> on the chevron refinery, it's called the polluters pay initiative and it would create a new tax on oil refining in richmond. supporters say that tax could generate 60 to 90 million dollars per year. that could be used for environmental cleanup and health services. but chevron says that they're already the largest taxpayer in employer in richmond. and they add that this measure could make it difficult for them to modernize the refinery and invest in the community. starting next month. you can trade in your old car for 1500 bucks. the bay-area quality management district is offering this deal to try to

get those cars off the road and improve our air quality. they say the older cars are bigger polluters. then the newer ones to be eligible, your car has to be from 1998 model or older. >> catering company used by the airline is now apologizing after a passenger heading to san francisco found a razor blade in their food. take a look. the passenger record took a picture of it. this was on an air india flight to see that particular piece of metal there in the middle of the bold. and it does kind look like a raise actually not a razor blade from a machine. yeah. the company says latest part of a vegetable processing machine. in response say they're going to strengthening their inspection process. i hope so. will san francisco's ambassadors program is at risk of be cut. its fate relies on the mayor's approval of recent budget proposals. so san francisco city leaders and community groups are speaking out. they say they want to save the program. >> thanks. jus i am no longer homeless and currently living in london shelters. and i'm

not going to stay there forever. i'm also trying to transition into more permanent housing, which is one of my dreams. >> well, the program provides safety escorts helps neighbors report crimes and helps people find housing and job opportunities. it serves multilingual communities, but san francisco, as we know, is facing an 800 million dollar budget deficit. and the mayor says that some changes to the program are going to have to be made. >> goal is to make sure none of these ambassadors unemployed, but we do need to consolidate our ambassador programs is more cost effective and it's an opportunity to make sure that were not spreading ourself been and where keeping in supporting the most effective ambassador programs that we have. >> mayor breed has until august to approve and sign a budget. >> 7.22. right now and coming up on the kron 4 morning news. are tributes continue to say, hey, kid, willie mays will be hey, kid, willie mays will be back with more team coverage. flex alert! flex alert!

>> we're back at 7. 24 and in the east bay, a playground project in oakland donated by steph and ayesha curry has been vandalized. the school district sent out these pictures of the damage. this wasn't the global family, eleanor school over the weekend. the vandals tore apart lanterns. they ripped out irrigation systems and broke all the wooden benches. the playground was one of the major additions to that campus during a renovation project years ago. >> in the east bay, a police chase ended in a fiery crash.

the loose this morning. this encounter started yesterday morning in san leandro. there's the result of the crash. as you can see here. so about 2.30, in the morning. there was an auto happening. police came there. they found the 2 cars had been burglarized and they saw 3 people running chopped in a car. police chase that car on date 80 and then the driver lost control near the 29th avenue off-ramp oakland that resulted in the big fiery crash. you can see the handcuffs. they're one suspect was arrested. but the other 2 got away. health officials are urging you to get the m-pox vaccine ahead of san francisco's pride parade. that celebration set for june 30th m-pox is transmitted through close contact and well and anybody in the community can get it. the majority contracted m-pox during an outbreak 2 years ago were members of the lgbtq+ community. the ordinance is

passed on first street. >> now san francisco leaders are advancing an ordinance that would require corner stores, liquor stores and smoke shops in the city's tenderloin neighborhood to close between midnight and 05:00am. the board of supervisors passed it on first reading yesterday afternoon. the supervisor still have to vote on the final approval. the ordinance affect stores between o farrell and mcallister and from polk to jones. it's part of mayor london breed's effort to crack down on open air drug markets. she claims the shops are attracting illegal behavior. store argue that this would cost them business. coming up on the kron 4 morning news, we'll continue our coverage of willie mays and his passing as we look back and pay tribute. we'll be right back.

to rich or richer. december fell about 14, the golden gate bridge. 37 of the tolls. 21 minutes. all right, james, back to you. thanks a lot. let's get back to our coverage of willie mays is passing remembering and honoring the legend. yeah. the legacy he passed away yesterday afternoon. >> at the age of 93 and our kron. 4 sports director jason dumas has a look back at his legacy. >> we continue to honor willie mays, his legacy not only as a ballplayer, but as a man who broke barriers in transcended the world of sports as a player, his talent was generational. during his 23 year. major league playing career mays was named most valuable player twice first as a new york giant in 1954. and then as the san francisco giant in 1965, he holds the all-time record for put out by an outfielder with a career total of 7,095. he won 12 gold gloves in center field and appeared in get this 24 all-star games. i'm not done.

he led the league in home runs for time, stolen bases for time slugging percentage 5 times total bases. 3 times in triple street times. he won. he was 3rd on the all-time home run list with 660 until 2003, when godson, barry bonds past him. but like i said, his biggest impact went beyond sports. >> i'm jason dumas kron. 4 sports. >> and the memorial to this baseball great continues to grow there at the willie mays statue. you know. >> beloved by all, giants fans, kron four's will tran among them. he's out at oracle park this morning. where is the talking to folks have been coming by? will? >> this is a place where people are pulling over. forget about traffic laws that pulling over taking pictures of jogging by this location, even stopping their job and then taking at pictures, spending a few moments with

willie mays for a lot of people. of course, this is as close as they will be getting. >> to willie mays, can you believe this? this is the first time in 93 years. the sun has gone up without willie howard mayes junior from alabama. but he belongs to the world. they will forever be a giant. you can see the flowers that battle and the jerseys here. a lot of people stopping by yesterday afternoon when the news broke. most of these flowers came from that particular time. people i'm sure will continue to flock to this location throughout the day. really quickly, i want to show you. did you know that the palm trees in front if you come down here, count for yourself. 24 palm trees in front. that is not an accident. 24 being willie mays is number. let me quickly show you a picture of willie mays in me in 2019. i don't 9 family photos at my house.

only a few of them. and willie mays is one of them. i actually met him 6 years ago when he stopped me and said that, you know, he watched me on television and i just was floored. and then year later, i was with him because of me. but we were at a giants event and we spent some moments just laughing and joking as well. so he'll always be special to me. always forevermore, a giant and not just as san francisco giants, but a giant in the world of major league baseball. 660 home runs 6th all time. the average 33 home runs every season regarded as the most spectacular. best. combination of speed power. major league baseball history. he was so good that he actually played pro at 15 years old. he joined the giants in 1951. and he will forever. the giant got a chance to talk to some fans this morning. here's why they

the front pages this morning, guys. >> he definitely transcends baseball. and just sure a quick quote from president obama. he says it's because of giants like willie, that someone like me could even think about running for will. thank you very willie mays was inducted into the baseball hall of fame in his first year of eligibility in 1979. in cooperstown is remembering maze for his infectious enthusiasm for baseball and his ability to capture the hearts of fans. the president of the baseball hall of fame says that maze is always one of the most sought out players for visitors. he was truly beloved here in cooperstown. been a few years since he's able to come back. it obviously had some health issues in recent years that that preclude him from coming back here. but we still heard from him regularly. >> holiday cards and we know how much he meant to the people that come to cooperstown. i mean, when people are walking into the plaque gallery, they're going around the museum. but they are talking about willie mays and truly one the greatest players ever to play the game

and they want to see his plaque or they want to see is artifacts and there's really no way to put into words what he meant. but now i think people who welcome to cooperstown know it and that they feel. karen lee. >> and that plaque is on the move. they are moving it from cooperstown to alabama for the mlb game at rickwood field. >> very poor. generations baseball and we will always cherish the memory of great >> and this is rickwood field or garner said that plaque is headed. they gave willie mays one last standing ovation in birmingham, alabama, last night. the say, hey, kid, got his start right there in what is now america's oldest ballpark with the bringing black barons, mays. his death

comes at a time. major league baseball is in birmingham to play tribute to the leagues where may's got his start. a game in his honor between the san francisco giants and the st. louis cardinals is set to happen tomorrow just earlier this week may's released a statement apologizing for not being able to attend. >> that game in person. instead he had planned to watch it from home fans, both local to birmingham and from here in the bay area. remember him last night during a minor league tribute game that was played there. >> the crowd was just amazing. they extend up. they gave whaley a a standing ovation. i'm glad they did that. it was very that happened during the game. wow. it rickwood field. >> it meant that the crowd really feel that it was a big house in a about to do take that hands out on it. was this a special moment for us to be in a place when a announcement head?
