screeching tires, huge crowd over to the bay bridge this past weekend and a south bay standoff has come to a peaceful conclusion. we'll have details. station. >> he's calling for news 2. >> hello, everybody, and welcome. thanks for joining us on kron. 4 news at 2. i'm catherine heenan. our top story this afternoon, speaking for the first time since that fbi raid on her home on thursday. oakland mayor sheng thao. the mayor proclaimed her innocence and her first public comments since the raids kron. first theresa stasi owes in the newsroom and has more theresa catherine. a lot to unpack here. the mayor breaking her silence following last week's big news. >> the mayor had a very angry tone. it came out swinging with her comments. she said that she was in a state of shock for a while and that was why we had not heard from her. she did not take questions at

a news conference but said that she will not be leaving office and plans to fight for her job. >> and i am your man here. i am the mayor to call i am the mayor to all the oaklanders who work hard. we're working overtime to do the right thing and to make the world a better place. and no matter how hard you strive and push and fight it, stay positive. you don't give up because you believe in yourself. thank you. know what you have to offer this world. that you just cannot catch a break. >> the pushback on what the mayor had to say came quick. here is former director of communications justin berton and legal analyst michael cardoza. >> well, i'm still a little stunning. i'll be honest. give her credit. she came out swinging. she brought high

the raid on right-wing conspiracy. and as you heard from our analysts, what they had to say about that, we'll continue to follow this story closely. we'll have more coming up. kron. 4 news at 3 o'clock. >> all right, ray, so thank you very much for that. and of as theresa knows, we're continuing to cover this. the oakland naacp released a statement after the mayor's address. they're calling on her to resign amid budget concerns and following that mass shooting during a juneteenth celebration at lake merritt. the statement says for the good of the citizens of oakland, it's time for the mayor to step aside to allow for a new leader. there's no time to waste given the current crisis facing the city. if the mayor cares about the people and not just her career ambitions, she should do the honorable and step aside. so the city does not collapse while she deals with her personal issues. meantime, activists rally outside

oakland city hall this morning again calling on the mayor to resign the campaign trying to remove her has submitted enough signatures to put the recall on the november ballot. the group blames her for an uptick in crime in the city activists with the campaign to recall, the mayor stood at frank ogawa plaza today after she delivered her remarks. here's the former alameda county superior court judge spearheading the effort. >> these are citizens who e hurting. they've been hurting for a long, long time and she does not listen. so she rather deflect. rather play victim, which we don't need any we don't need any more oakland are the people who are suffering. >> voters first elected to do as mayor in november of 2022. berkley police asking for help in finding a 13 year-old girl who has been missing about a day and a half. now police say i'm aja brown felt field was

last seen just after midnight sunday morning on harrison street near the chinese garden park. she was wearing gray shirt, black pants. she has black hair, brown eyes, 5 foot, 580 pounds. anybody with information is being asked to contact berkeley place. a huge sideshow on the bay bridge this weekend. it was a massive haul to traffic for more than 30 minutes. the chp says 150 cars were involved. kron four's will tran has that story. >> traffic is moving along just fine this monday morning. but it was not moving along from saturday into sunday morning in the eastbound direction from san francisco to the east bay. let me show you the video. this is very reminiscent of what happened 3 weeks along the streets of san francisco just down from the ferry building this time, another major thoroughfare the bay bridge. dozens of

sideshows, spectators and drivers all came to the same place at the same time hit their brakes, meaning that they stopped traffic from behind them. they started doing donuts. you can hear donuts in the background. they started filming with their cell phones. fireworks going off like it was a planned activity. but it was not a planned activity. according to law enforcement officers because the chp eventually made their way to the scene. they did not block off the other way of the sideshow. meaning car rally so this sideshow members were able to leave the area. no word yet on if they made any arrests, but they have access to that video just like we do. they also have access to cameras on the bay bridge. keep in mind. >> the day after the sideshow took place in san francisco, that force the police chief as well as the mayor to respond in that particular case. the police chief, he urged the

public to be patient because there's so much outrage. police chief. he said that they have access to camera readers as well as investigators and they hope to make arrests from what happened a couple of weeks ago. the chp, i'm sure they have their investigators as well. but in this particular case, all they did was managed to disperse the crowd. but nonetheless, that people stuck behind that traffic. they were forced in a way to participate in the sideshow because they had nowhere else to go. but to wait it out. in the north bay, the police are looking for the person behind a shooting that hurt. >> for people over the weekend happened about 2.30, yesterday morning on spring road in monterey street video shows pretty big police presence. is this thing happened? no word yet on the conditions of the 4 people hurt. but about an hour later, there was a sideshow just south of highway. 37, a car was set on fire. nobody

was hurt. there. police say they didn't respond because they were just too busy with the shooting. also and apartment fire. a box truck carrying 16,000 pounds of avocados overturned early this morning on 101 in san mateo. this was the scene. the chp says the truck hit 2 cars about 3.45, at the 3rd avenue off-ramp. not clear what caused that crash, but you can see the the box truck ended up on its side. the chp to work to unload the avocado. so the truck could be turned up. right? and it was towed from the scene. nobody was injured. i let's take a look at the forecast is so we lovely. look live golden gate bridge shrouded fog. and isn't that pretty dame's far? it's like right. there is where it's covered up there. that's right. we can see actually the ground view going on here. >> at the golden gate bridge is about the only problem area where the fog has been lingering. now, cloud cover is another issue we're going to some of that looks like

tonight tomorrow. but this has been keeping conditions kind of artificially cool there. 71 san francisco, meanwhile, inland plenty of middle 90's. we've actually going a little better than yesterday's numbers at this time up north. we have those 80's and also some 80's poking out here in the east bay shoreline. already. 88 going on for fremont, for contrast for you. 24 hours ago midday, you can see it even san francisco above yesterday's numbers. and we see this in the east bay. alternately, we're going to a slight cooling trend, though, getting to the latter portion of the week to some of the traffic. we have to make note of, however, 95 probably by 3 o'clock 6 down to 88 73 by 9 will be some scattered clouds just thrown in there just for good measure. now, this is we're talking about against few little scattered clouds for tonight, blah, blah, blah. that's early tonight. then later on overnight, this is not our marine layer here. this is mid level moisture which we tend to get a lot of times this time of year from the monsoon that comes up from that direction over there with this is bubbling up do from the south, the same general

game plan is involved in that. that is elevated shower activity or thunder showers, even though we probably won't get at the surface that activity up there could dry. some could drive some dry lightning. something look out for for tomorrow. you see that in the mountains flaring up as well. we'll take a look at that forecast coming up for you tonight and into the rest of the week. catherine. >> david, thank you very newsom again, he's not going to deliver a traditional state of the state address instead tomorrow morning. >> newsom will deliver his state of the state letter to the legislature. there will also be pre-recorded remarks on his social media accounts. most california governor's over the last 60 chosen to deliver a formal state of the state address to the schwarzenegger. but newsom has taken a different approach last year. he did take part in a statewide tour and delivered a letter to the legislature. one law professor talked about what the state constitution says about this. article. 5 section 3 of the california

federal right to abortion at left regulations up to the states. and of course, ignited intense debate about access and restrictions. washington correspondent jessi turnure joins us live without both sides are marking this anniversary, of course, with the election coming up, just say. >> yeah, good afternoon, catherine. that intense debate really only continues today. national democrats do want to restore row at the federal level while republicans largely want to keep it at the states. >> as a health care crisis on the campaign trail monday, vice president kamala harris accused former president donald trump of stealing reproductive rights from women when he was in the white house. donald trump handpicked 3 members of the united states supreme court because he intended for them to overturn roe v way. that decision came down exactly 2 years ago which removed the federal right to an abortion. protesters faced

off monday in front of the supreme court, which still has an abortion rights case to rule on this term. harris warned a second trump presidency would be even worse. proudly. takes credit for overturning roe. >> i took a lot of heat. a lot of hits, but we did the right thing. over the weekend, trump celebrated the decisions anniversary. we've got abortion out of the federal government and back to the state. while president joe biden wants to bring back the federal right. trump said voters in each state should decide then that's the way it should be ahead of the candidates. first debate in this presidential election thursday, south dakota republican governor kristi noem told nbc she supports trump's stance. every state will look different. i think that's appropriate. but new york democratic governor kathy hochul told cnn that should be an advantage for president biden. should lean hard into the fact. >> that now one out of 3 american women live with an

abortion ban. >> now, a growing list of anti-abortion groups are calling on trump to commit to supporting a national abortion ban if elected. but he has yet to do so. live in washington. i'm jessi tenure. thank you very much to say. >> former house speaker nancy pelosi was in san francisco today on the two-year anniversary of the supreme court decision to strike down roe versus wade. she was joined by abortion rights advocates, including the ceo of planned parenthood of northern california. she talked about the ongoing battle for women's rights, including a push to protect the right to contraception and she called on republicans to join the fight for women's rights. >> you would think? that with their opposition to abortion, they would madly embrace contraception women having the right to contraception. 8 republicans voted yes. 195

republican 795 point this year. >> recent study found that more than 171,000 people have traveled to a different state in order to get an abortion that since january of last year. the u.s. supreme court stepping in to the fight over transgender rights. the nation's highest court will hear appeals from the biden administration and families trying to block state bans on gender affirming care. the justices action comes as the republican led states have restricted healthcare for transgender people and issued restrictions on school. sports participation. the use of bathrooms and drag shows the administration and democratic lead states have extended protection for transgender people. the case before the high court involves a tennessee law which restricts hormone therapy for transgender minors. the hilton

hotel near the oakland airport scheduled to close. this is after more than 50 years. the port of oakland says probably this is going to happen in late august. the hilton hotel on heggen berger road has been a a tenant of the port since 1968. the port says it will work with the facility and the city of oakland want to try to help the employees affected by this. not clear yet exactly why the hotel is closing. muni rider satisfaction has reached its highest level and more than 2 decades. this is according to san francisco transit officials more than 72% of many riders are rating service is good or excellent. that's the highest since 2001, the sfmta says it is working to make community a safer and cleaner more reliable and says major delays have fallen. 76% since 2019. the survey was conducted this year. a full report is going to be released next month. all right. time to

>> very frightening ordeal for passengers on a korean air flight after a descended about 25,000 feet and 5 minutes happened about 30 minutes after takeoff. the plane was headed to taiwan, had to turn back, make an emergency landing a problem in the pressurization system was later found. 15 passengers were evaluated. they say nobody was seriously hurt. prosecutors are recommending that the department of justice

bring criminal charges against boeing. this follows a claim last month. the company violated a settlement related to 2 crashes in which it promise to overhaul its compliance program. the 7.37 max jets crashed in 2018 in indonesia, 2019 in the ethiopia 346 people killed in january. a boeing jet had that door panel blowout mid-flight. that was in the news. the department has until july 7th to decide whether to prosecute. american airlines and its flight attendants appear to be at a standstill on contract talks. a job walk-off could happen just as summer. travel, of course, is getting underway. the airlines and the union could not reach an agreement last week. the union says it spent more than a year of back and forth with the mediation board. they still have not got the wage hikes. they want. american airlines says it did offer an immediate 17% pay raise with profit sharing added. up next,

notified customers about the closure. first i thought it was fake. i didn't believe it. i'm sad about this location is going to be closing down loyal customers shared stories about eating here over the years. i was a student at some schools, state university just just >> i've been coming here since around maybe 2000. >> 2, 2003, i'm really disappointed to hear more so far. my mom, then for me because as she dearly loves mcnuggets and this is one of the few places close enough for me to bring her the fast food restaurant off of 19th avenue is packed with people in the final hours of operation. >> many saying the mall just won't be the same without it. it's drastically changed over the years that this is one of the more heartbreaking change is that i think they're making it because this is so one of the place so we can hanging out together now we don't know where we can goal.

>> yeah. the franchisee owner scott roderick tells kron 4 the decision to close the restaurant was a difficult one for his family. roderick says there are 2 main factors that led to the closure. one, he says the landlord was unwilling to negotiate a sensible long-term rent second rodrik says the cost of operating a business is accelerating at historic levels. he says it became extra challenging to stay open after the state's $20. minimum wage mandate went into effect on april. 1st for fast food restaurants. roderick says all of his employees have been offered jobs to work at nearby mcdonald's. there's another location about a mile away as well as other fast food chains at the food court inside the mall. but longtime customers say this closure hurts their routine. and while it one of the >> last places where i could get a hamburger for one 99 2024 economy. so. >> i'm sara stinson reporting in san francisco. kron. 4 news.

>> the fast food chain raising cane's is coming to the east bay of the company plans to open a restaurant this fall in the hayward retail center off mission boulevard earlier this year. the chain announced it would also open in san jose and coma. and it does already have a location in oakland. >> emergency crews in santa cruz county rescued a hiker this weekend after he had been missing more than a week. 34 year-old lucas mcclish and experience backpacker. he was reported missing after he disappeared into big basin redwoods state park, recent wildfires in that area have transformed the terrain that caused him to get lost. he says he began shouting for help. finally, somebody hurt him and he was rescued by park rangers and other officers. he says he survive by eating berries and drinking water from his boat and he slept on a bed of what leaves mcclish spent a night in a hospital where he was treated for minor injuries and released.

>> look at what did you see and what color and what did you say to mom and r d? >> and if you save the day. >> all right. that's a cute little boy. but a smart little boys. a 2 year-old in san francisco. and yeah, he's being credited pretty much with saving the day luka alerted parents to a fire at their home told them to call 9-1-1. as you heard, this was on balboa and 35th avenue in the richmond district. no one was hurt, and that probably thanks to little luca. this was a nice scene in san jose over the weekend. and alameda county firefighter greeted by cheers and applause as he headed home from the hospital brandon franco, as a 22 year-old veteran of alameda fire. he suffered burns while

fighting the corral fire near tracy earlier this month. he did need some surgery as he left the hospital. members of the alameda fire department turned out wishing him well as he continues his recovery. cal fire crews remained on the scene of the point fire near lake sonoma. now it is a 90% contained. no new activity expected full containment is expected soon. the fire burned more than 1200 acres destroyed 3 buildings. at least 2 of them where homes to other houses were damaged. now to the latest on the biggest wildfire in california. the sites fire. this colusa county. it's burned more than 19,000 acres. cal fire says it is. 48% ained. crews have dropped more than 700,000 gallons of water. a lot of fire retardant. all right. let's talk about the forecast as we take a lot this. is that nice cruise ship dave spahr right? i can see this from the

news room. so it makes us kind of wish for, you a lot of the water. yeah, looks it wasn't pretty. it is right. nice there and looks like it will be nice touring for them to on the west coast of the heading >> biggest through some tropical air aloft this we haven't half moon bay, some scattered clouds a bit. coming up, a little bit of the sun. but folks out there enjoying it is. but in the chilly side out there, those 95 inland. my next hour, 6 o'clock about 89 73. we get to about 9, some scattered clouds in our future. on storm tracker. 4 this we're talking about. you see this on radar. but according to a lot of the reporting stations on the ground, they're not getting anything from this. the big concern is this type of moisture at the middle layers of the atmosphere, get some heating and it starts to sometimes get a little aggravated and that could drive the static electricity. we know as lightning. so we we get dry lightning from that. this is what we want to watch tomorrow. this is going to kind of come over our area overnight tomorrow and then clear out late in the day, getting further from home.

this the front we want to watch. it's a game player changer for us by the middle of the week. some cooler temps coming our way thursday and into friday. let's go to future cast for you'll see what i'm talking about that you see kind of the plumes bubble up here. again, this is not the marine layer. this is higher up. so this atmosphere is a little bit more agitated here. little bit more active. you can see in the mountains to where they could get some thunder showers from this south. however, it looks like of tahoe and after its wake front gets here on wednesday, little messy at times and then marching through by wednesday afternoon. by the way, with fire season, all that we like the arrow direction of these winds. look at that. transplant are right there. good onshore flow pattern. it looks like not just the next 48 hours, but all week long. that's good news. we'll have a look at longer range forecast for you a bit. catherine, thank you, dave. a well-known sir for lifeguard and actor on the island of oahu has died in a shark attack to mayo perry. >> he was on a break from his lifeguard job when he won 4

quick's or friends say on oahu's north shore yesterday he was paddling out to what's known as goat island and was bitten several times by a shark perry's fellow lifeguards eventually brought his body to shore on a jet ski where he was pronounced dead. >> while perry was. a lifeguard loved by all. >> well known on the north shore to my house personality was infectious. as much people loved him. he loved everyone else. more. >> shark sightings are apparently very common in the area where this happened. the 49 year-old you just saw a picture, but he was in 4th pirates of the caribbean movie. some episodes of hawaii, 5, 0, he leaves behind a wife. kron. 4 is your local election headquarters? you know, thursday is the first big debate of the election season between president biden and former president trump. the rules include the muting

of microphones when the other candidate is talking. you might remember got pretty noisy when these 2 last met on a debate stage. and this was a nashville in 2020 kron, 4 will carry the debate live thursday night starting at 06:00pm. i will be moderating a panel of our political analysts both before and immediately after the debate should be fun. analysts calling it a high stakes event. they say it does carry a lot of risk for both man. they're reminding people that they are the oldest candidates to have ever competed in a presidential race. independent candidate robert f kennedy really tried but failed to qualify for that debate. is trump finally ready to unveil his vice presidential pick? maybe because the former president says his pick will be at the atlanta debate on thursday. the reported a shortlist north dakota governor doug burgum. you just saw also 3 senators, ohio's jd vance, florida's marco rubio. south carolina's tim scott, republican

representative elise stefanik and byron donalds are contenders and you're looking at former hud secretary ben carson. israel's defense minister is in washington this week meeting with the secretaries of state and defense. the visit comes after israel claimed the u.s. is withholding weapons. the white house denies that. washington correspondent maddie beer-temple has that story. >> surrounded by protesters. >> israeli defense minister yoav gallant walked into a meeting with secretary of state antony blinken. his visit to dc comes as clashes continue between israel and the biden administration. even so the commitment to israel security is ironclad. state department spokesman matthew miller says that's what the u.s. will emphasize to go. lot. he says the u.s. will also reiterate the need for israel to form a plan for after the war. amid reports that israel is winding down major operations in rafah for.
