full day of campaigning after president biden bowed out the race stopping by her campaign headquarters in delaware. washington correspondent reshad hudson reports. >>and although the nomination isn't locked up just yet in the last 24 hours, harris has been able to raise over 81 million dollars and she's already securing the endorsement of some pretty high-profile democrats. was president. kamala harris entered her campaign headquarters in delaware to an enthusiastic staff. it is my intention to go out and earn this nomination and to win. >>this was harris's first full day of campaigning since entering the race for the democratic presidential nomination. we are going to take our case to the american people and we are going to win. president biden has given his full endorsement to hairs, calling his vice president on

the phone while isolates with harris says her goal is to unite the democratic party and the nation. we believe in freedom and opportunity and justice, not for some. >>but for she quickly turned her attention to former president trump as she looks to november's election. >>and in this campaign, i will proudly put my record against his. >>harris was introduced by her husband. second gentleman, doug emhoff. >>we're going to win this election. >>and one big decision harris will have to make soon is who will be her vice presidential running mate. i'm told that the campaign has already started working on the short list reporting in washington, reshad hudson, act.

>>thanks, irshad. the vp responding to support tonight by saying in part, quote, i am proud of secure the broad support needed to become our party's nominee. and as the daughter of california, i am proud my home states delegation help put our campaign over the top. the democratic party is expected to choose harris as their presidential nominee officially at the democratic national convention next month. and the top democrats were surveyed by the associated press. almost 2000 votes are needed to become the nominee out of the 2700 surveyed. only 4.54. said they were undecided. more than 2600 support. harris. >>we don't have time to waste. we don't have time to mess around and to figure things out and to decide, well, maybe this person will maybe that person. kamala harris is person knows how to work with people. she stopped and she is going to be the next >>well, they're san francisco

mayor london breed expressing her support of the vice president today on the steps of city hall. it's where harris got her start in politics. reid is calling on supporters to campaign on harris's behalf outside the city. >>have to travel to battleground states. we're going to have to hit the doors in the fall. we're going to have to do text messages were going to have to defend her record because that people right now as we speak that are trying to tear her down and will consistently go after every single step of the way. >>with vice president harris as new push to become the next democratic presidential nominee. reactions continue to flood in from around the bay area where the vice president started her political career in the south bay. lawmakers have endorsed the vice president and local political groups say they're ready to stand behind her kron 4. shaq moment has the story. >>vice president kamala harris could become the first bay area native elected as the president of the united states. the now presumptive
11:35 pm
democrat nominee for president grew up in the east bay where she worked as an alameda county prosecutor. she was later elected san francisco's district attorney becoming the first black and south asian american woman to hold that office. harris never served in the south bay, but democrats there say they consider harris one of their own. my sense of democrats and arm the south bay area is more of an identification with the vice president, harris because of her values and who she is chair for santa clara county democrats. bill james says the vice president's new campaign replacing current president joe biden's bid for reelection has ignited a new spark for people working on the ground. there was a lot of anxiety about the about the whole about the fact that the national dialogue was focused our candidates age and infirmity and inability to brian south bay. lawmakers like congressman ro cada endorsing the vice president saying in a social media post, quote, our party can out run on a message of hope and a
11:36 pm
vision for the future. and congresswoman zoe lofgren posting, quote, show strongly make the case against donald trump and will make a great president if republicans were hoping that something like this happen, i think they're going to regret. >>that we did have a change, a change at the top. i think you should really look. >>at her record here is attorney general for california. but for bay area regional vice chair for the california republican party, jason clarke, harris, as the state's attorney general is an example of poor leadership. quality of life has gone down. crime is kind democrats say her record will reflect better. the vice president's experience in the bay area it in the and the state of california is different than caricature that republicans will try to get. meantime, california delegates who are going to go for biden at the dnc now unanimously endorsed vice president harris joining a long states who will likely push the vice president and to the democratic nominee for president that has biden has stepped down. but i've really seen. >>increase in energy when
11:37 pm
people start thinking about the possibility of kamala harris in the south bay jack moment. kron 4 news. >>well, as a nice weekend out there, but what to expect for the work week ahead. let's check in with kron 4 chief meteorologist lawrence karnow lawrence. >>yeah, we've got some of the fog moving in along the coastline right now. but you see how low it was. you see the tops the golden gate hours. that's kind of give you an idea. high pressure kind of compressing drew of fog bank outside right now. and that means yeah, it's going to be a hot one out there as we head toward the interior valleys tomorrow. again, number jump today, some places almost 20 degrees warmer out there. how about a little more of that temperatures? boy, they spiked 101 today in little more one-on-one in antioch. 92 in san jose. 95 in the battle and 92 in santa rosa, although along the coastline, boy, not much heat there. 61 degrees. it was 40 degrees cooler on the coastline from half moon bay livermore for today. high pressure. this ridge has been around with us almost the better part of july. and guess what? it's got one more bring
11:38 pm
us some hot weather. you can see the expands tomorrow and that could lead to some very hot temperatures, especially inland for a much of the bay area in the interior parts of california. temperatures are going to soar again. so we've got advisories for heat parts of the north bay, the south bay, the santa clara valley, excessive heat warnings. alameda contra costa county, as we're expecting those numbers soaring into triple digits by tomorrow afternoon. and then we're going to begin to finally see some changes. i looks like we're going to watch temperatures begin to cool off just a little bit. so long range forecast. here's the good news we get through these next few days. all of a sudden, yeah, we're all in the gray and that's a good place to be easy at this scale just above. that will be normal as we head in toward the end of this month and the beginning of next, something we have been able to say much of july. been able to say much of july. guys, back to you. dave's compay just scored the

>>the race for the white house has taken quite a many twists and turns as nation attempts withdraw from the race and to top it all off. no official democratic nominee weeks before the convention to break down strategy moving forward. kron four's grant lotus and vicki liviakis spoke with brett samuels, white house reporter for the hill. >>no real precedent for this in washington. kind of a breakneck pace. how is this being digested by u and folks who, you know, covered the white house on a day-to-day basis. >>yeah, it was. you guys mentioned, you know, it's been pretty breakneck pace here just in the last month or so, really dating back that debate at the end of june, just sort of a barrage of developments. but certainly it's it's sort of hard to believe that it was only about 30 hours ago that
11:42 pm
the president biden announced that he would not be seeking reelection in november. a given. so the rapid pace that which we've seen vice president harris really kind of consolidate support for the democratic party. she's raised tens of millions of dollars. he's already gone to delaware to the campaign headquarters. so, you know, for for race that, you know, on saturday was trump versus biden. it already very much feels like it is now trump versus harris heading into november. >>so the most overused term these days is unprecedented. but this is unprecedented. is it not? and and would you drop on something in history that that that helps you try and, you know, go with the punches here. >>yeah, certainly hard to think of a time when you know you've hazard this succession of events. when you when you add in that assassination attempt against former president trump, certainly it's a very unprecedented sort of wave of of events. but, you know, i think obviously people like to hearken back to lyndon the president announced he
11:43 pm
would not seek a second term, but certainly this is closer to the that when president johnson announced he would not be running for reelection, this is a condensed timeline that we're dealing with. as you guys mentioned, the democratic convention chicago is on august 19. so we're less than a month away when president biden is announced that he's stepping aside the non as the nominee. so certainly sort of, as you guys said, it doesn't apply here. you know, the the term unprecedented when we think about just the really condensed timeline and how quickly things have evolved and changed in just short time. i. >>there's a from some democratic leaders kamala harris might emerge a stronger candidate if she does have to kind of prove herself here in a little mini primary. what's the expectation for how this will actually play out? >>yeah, certainly that's that's been an argument that we've heard from some folks who think that it would look better than just that sort of coronation, if you will, of party leaders, you know, crowning her, the nominee. but
11:44 pm
at the same time, it's it's hard to see what that would really look like. a sort you know, many primary, the folks who i think a lot of people would have expected to maybe throw their hat in the ring as a potential candidate have already basically all lined up behind harris factor is the nominee. when you think about gavin newsom in california, josh shapiro and pennsylvania, andy beshear kentucky, jb pritzker and illinois get a graduate michigan. all those folks who are sort of floated as maybe alternatives. they've all said they support harris, is the nominee. it's kind of hard to see a serious challenger kind of taking her on at this point. just given all the advantages she has. so this point, think what we'll see instead is harris, a consensus that we talk about she wants to earn the nomination. she wants to work for the nomination and she's going to go out there and make sure she's, you know, talking with lawmakers talking with advocacy talking with state delegates to to basically say, you know, that she earned this the right way and she won over their support. >>so, brett, you did run down a list of names that word would have been potential challenges. challengers kamala
11:45 pm
harris. they're also now being looked at as possible running mates who who do you see in the top 2 or 3? >>yes, ali. so i think the folks i mention, you know, andy beshear, the kentucky governor and josh secure the pennsylvania governor. they certainly get a lot of another name to watch and sort of bandied about is mark kelly, the senator from arizona, obviously with kelly in shapiro. the benefits are that they represent swing states. shapira particular is a governor who, you know, kind of brings that statewide you know, it would be a much younger ticket than what republicans are running with trump at the top. so those are going 3 names, right? cooper from north carolina. another governor whose name gotten thrown in there. i think those are the 4 names. cooper, shapiro, bashir and mark kelly who i think are the top of most people's lists. and certainly to be interesting to see again, the convention less than a month away. how quickly we see kamala harris and her
11:46 pm
team moved to kind of out these candidates and name a running mate. >>kamala's name was already on the ticket. now she's just at the top of the ticket. does she get to just take over entire biden campaign apparatus and the financial war chest? is that just all hers right now? and it's really a pretty seamless transition and would it shock you if she were not the nominee? >>it's answer your second question first. yes, im good shopping at this point. she's not the nominee. there just seems to be such this groundswell of support democrats after weeks of kind of infighting about biden is the candidate i think are really just excited to kind of rally behind kamala harris and put that in the rear view and say we're we're uniting behind harris and we want to be donald trump. and it's your first question. you know, essentially, yes, she does get a kind of in harris inherit the biden campaign infrastructure. you know, she was on the ticket so she can say that primary we're also going for her essentially earlier this year. she's
11:47 pm
already said she's going to maintain the same campaign as president biden jen o'malley dillon sort of being the architect or the chairwoman of the campaign moving forward and that were chest that inherit as well, which is really important because other potential challengers likely would have run into some issues and herring that big fundraising haul. and we should note that already in just 24 hours after biden backed or as the nominee dollars already raised about 81 million dollars according to the campaign. certainly a sign i think excitement among democrats about this new face. that's right. on the money. yeah, it's a ton of money in a short >>so before we close out here, the one name we have not really discussed much donald trump and how is he digesting all this material? because campaign thus far had been pretty much based around biden and his agent. now donald trump. has been a
11:48 pm
>>yeah, certainly it's it's a pointed contrast when you go from sort of the 2 oldest, major party candidates in history to now kamala harris. only 59. she can really draw that contrast with donald trump. but i think, you know, to your point, the trump campaign was really hoping joe biden will stay at the top of the ticket. they view him as a weaker candidate. they obviously with leading pretty comfortably in a lot of soul. so they felt like that was their best case scenario. but certainly we're already seeing the trump campaign and the former president pivoted to attacking harris over a, you know, a record on the border and inflation's retire her to president biden's record on those issues and then also attacking over something she said during the 2020 primary when she herself was running for the white would not be surprised to see a lot of those old comments resurfaced as well as comments that she made praising joe biden when the trump campaign is is very eager. i think to connect her to biden who is pretty with both democrats and republicans. >>the rough and tumble few

drama has reproach, a deadline, the democratic national convention that is. and that's next month in chicago news nation's alex caprariello reports on how chicago is getting ready. >>exactly one month from now. this united center right here behind me is going to be crowded with thousands of people for the democratic national convention. that includes supporters, delegates and politicians. we know that the chicago police department has been in milwaukee this entire week observing how that city handles its own massive
11:52 pm
event and also observing security operations from what they call the secret service nerve center. but the police superintendent says they've been preparing for the dnc since chicago found out it was going to be the host city. >>500 additional officers are being brought in to help out, which will free up cpd to have their best trained and most talented officers for crowd control and field force work. these officers have undergone 40 plus hours of training in platoons to handle large-scale protests and disruptions that might unexpectedly breakout. but the recent assassination attempt on former president donald trump's life has also shifted the law enforcement focus in chicago with the secret service placing at least partial blame on the local police for the shooting on president trump. cpd says they have been in near constant communication with federal partners to ensure there is no breakdown in coverage. >>our relationship here with the secret service has been stellar, spend 100% professional our communication is all right. on point, we are
11:53 pm
planning together. we meet. we have these conversations all the time and i can tell you it the contact in the collaboration between not only secret service but all of our federal all of our federal partners around the planning of the dnc has been great. and i would just going to continue that throughout superintendent larry snelling says he has full confidence and trust in the united states secret service to protect windows rooftops and other compromising positions here in the city of chicago.

the donald trump reporter marni hughes takes a look back at harris's time in public service. >>history was made wednesday, january, 20th 2021 ball kamala harris, the former san francisco district attorney and california attorney general became the 49th vice president of the united states. so help me god. junior senator from california became the first black american and first south asian american to hold the office of vice president. >>born in oakland, california, to a jamaican american economist and an indian american cancer researcher kamala and her sister maya, were raised by their single that my mother asked anyone permission. >>i is within one generation nice and various candidate

12:03 am
democratic nominee and the california delegates were all on that call. we did a virtual vote and it was unanimous that gives her 496 more delegates she needed just under 2000 to essentially have to pledge delegates to clinch the nomination. and it looks like we are well on our way to have her as our official nominee. >>you that pelosi was on this i read somewhere that she said this is, you know, we have kind of new energy thanks to the selflessness of joe biden and the excellence of kamala harris without biden. harris isn't at the top of the ticket. now, how monumental was his decision to put his ego aside and make this call? >>well, i think it's historic. and i think you're also going to see in the coming months as he finishes his term because, of course, he still the president. you're going to see a lot of praise and accolades for that decision. but there's also just this tremendous
12:04 am
excitement that we have this vibrant, energetic, experienced vice president who is ready to go. that excitement already manifested itself in that in the first 24 hours, she has raised 81 million dollars from almost a million donors. it's crazy. it's really and people are just fired up. in fact, i also understand that over 30,000 people have signed up to volunteer. and i think that's probably that the strongest testament of the fact that people want to be with her to defeat donald trump. >>okay. you have a personal relationship with kamala harris. we can talk about this. you say that she had your back when you ran the first female, you know, lieutenant governor of california. and now you're saying you have her back. talk to me a little bit about that. you know, i was working in business in california and she
12:05 am
was the da here in san francisco. and we became friends you know, we on to dover, the fact that women and, you know, high levels of power were not common. this is 20 years ago and then when i decided to run for lieutenant governor, which was the first thing i ever ran for as a result donald trump winning. that she endorse me very early and i am sure that i would not have become the first woman elected lieutenant governor if she had not stood up and given me her endorsement very early. so it's incredibly exciting and very proud to be out there helping her now, you know me just jump in for a second. i i we spoke to dave mckeown. he's our political expert. >>i put it to him. i said, you know, hillary clinton 2016, you worked for hillary clinton. she didn't make it to the white house. what's different for kamala harris in 2024, is america ready for a woman president? >>i have to i think it's a lot bigger than not. i think the
12:06 am
question is much bigger now because we've had donald trump is the president. we know what he plans to do. he said he's going to be vindictive and and seek at revenge against people who didn't support him at california's going to be high on that list. we are the most populous state, the 5th largest economy and his vow to come after women and our reproductive rights and freedoms here. he has vowed to come after immigrant families, undocumented immigrant. he has vowed to take his revenge. we can't even imagine what he will. leash on us here in our state and of course, around the country. so to have a vice president, which is the best training ground, especially because and you saw today. how close the president and vice president have to come. he really has mentored her and taught her along the way she's ready for and it is going to be a battle to defeat him that
12:07 am
i believe we have candidates who can do it. >>because eric holder's law firm is now vetting potential vp picks. that decision needs to come quickly in this condensed timeframe that we're working in. who would you like to see the vice president consider on a short gosh, i there are so many great people across the country and i am sure that >>they have their work cut out for them. but i can tell you as a lieutenant governor to governor that it's really important that you have a trusting and positive and healthy working relationship with that person. she is a vice president. she knows. and she has told me and talk to me about how she knows that the president has valued having her by his side as a trusted bp. i think she'll be looking for the same thing. in addition, of course, to someone who's going to appeal to those voters in those battleground states because we're going to need them in order to win this election. all right. governor newsom has been a big cheerleader for joe
12:08 am
biden. >>his name has also been bandied about he has what about your boss? i think you'd have to ask the political scientist, but i don't think that the president and vice president can be from the same state. >>i think that's actually why we haven't heard his name about. but again, maybe because she's vice president, it's different. but again, she's got a wonderful relationship with our governor and the idea of her being president and gavin newsom as our governor, we can really solve some of the big challenges because we know we have challenges in our state and in our that require you know, people who are willing to roll up their sleeves and make some really hard decisions about how we can present. but we'll have to win this election first. well, we need another 7 minutes to talk about your run for governor. but the news in washington, he's kind of dominating things.
12:09 am
>>right now ahead of the november election, i can honestly tell you, i have not thought about my own campaign for past 24 hours. it's very exciting. and and she is. >>and national figure now she's our vice president, but she's born in oakland, just, you know, you were saying. and so for us to have someone we know so well. we know how capable how strong, how smart she it's it's been an exciting 24 hours and we're all going to be out there on this battlefield election with her. all right. i know we are tight on time. this whole thing has been about age. >>she changes the equation. does she not? yes, she again, i think it's reflected in this incredible outpouring of support for her and excitement. >>so now >>it's on and i'm not going to let you leave before i mention you, you are a huge beyonce taylor swift fan what do you say? do you have any indication that they may come out and encourage their

here in the bay area where her political career began. kron four's. pam moore has a closer look. >>i stand before you today. to announce my candidacy. >>20,000 people come out to oakland to launch the presidential campaign of kamala harris. the moment that i heard her speak, she inspired commoners is incredibly intelligent person deep character and about around care for we the people early on she was considered among the frontrunners that i will support and defend. not surprising for someone who has had a string of political victories in her home state. harris's father is jamaican american. she was raised in the east bay by her indian american mother, a cancer researcher. she graduated uc hastings law school was an alameda county assistant da assistant da in san francisco. then elected to times as da in the city starting in 2003.
