area, progressive organizations came out friday against both bay area recall races which has over 100 days to go before election day. recall, experts say it will likely take more than that for the incumbents to win. kron four's. dan kerman reports. >>these attempted electoral hijackings are not only dangerous, but irresponsible and a joint news conference. representatives have to progressive organizations. oakland, rising action and the will stone democratic renewal club came out against the recalls of both oakland mayor sheng thao and alameda county district attorney pamela price. we believe that this is a time where there must be a conversation in oakland about how these recalls are undermining our democracy, how they came about being

>>and injection is showing promising results in preventing the spread of hiv. a city of 5,000 women and girls in south africa and uganda found twice yearly shots were 100% effective in protecting against infections. the shots made by u.s. drugmaker gilead are currently used to treat hiv to help walk us through the study's results and its impact. kron 4 stephanie lin spoke to doctor monica gandhi with u c s f. >>we to start off give us a point of comparison. how are hiv infections currently being prevented? and why is this injection so groundbreaking? >>right now, unfortunately, hiv infections are not being prevented. in fact, the un aids just released updated statistics last week in the same meeting that the purpose one trial was released, that we've had 1.3 million new infections last year across the planet. that is no
12:03 am
different than 2 years ago. so we have not made progress in reducing hiv infections, pre-exposure, prophylaxis or prep is terribly important. and so that's what this study looked at was a new agent for pre-exposure prophylaxis. it's hard to take a pill every day. and in this case, this is a agent called lena captive it's given as an injection once every 26 weeks or 6 months and cisgender women, there were 5,000 women enrolled in the trial. but about 2100 a cap of air. there 0 infections in the half of their arm compared infections in the oral arms. well, that's pretty significant there. so. >>we do know right now that this injection is already being used to treat hiv. so could you clarify the difference between using the injection to treat versus prevent hiv. >>yes, so people living with hiv need lifelong treatment unfortunately, except for 7 years in the world where we have a cure hiv. so everyone
12:04 am
needs to be pill every day when a cap of year as treatment regimen is actually approved. only for highly treatment experience patients who have a lot of resistance to the other medications to it's not being used in a lot of people for treatment that was approved in december 2022. so this is really it's going to be it's me news, which is in the context of prep and what pride means is you're at risk for hiv. so you don't have hiv, you know, risk for hiv. you take a medication either oral or injectable to prevent you from getting hiv. if you're exposed. and so this will be now that 4th. but the agent that approved, there are 2 oral regiment, something called kara teddy bear, which is given as an injection every 8 weeks. now, this is going to be an injection every 6 months. >>got our understanding of use of this particular injection for treatment of hiv is is is that there's actually a quite an amount pills that the the user has to take. is that correct?
12:05 am
>>well, it used to be. we used to call handfuls of pills or cocktail regiments to treat hiv. to be fair, that is all gotten better. and in fact, most people are on one pill once a day where they have 3 pills embedded within that one pills brilliant combination. what it called fix those combinations. one once a day to make it easier. but despite that, even with one once a day, some people can't do that. it's hard. there's other challenges in life. so we only have 72% of people living with hiv in the world achieving that goal of therapy, which is very logic suppression. some are not tweeting everyone properly yet. and we need some help. and injectables could really so, of course, while this is still being tested as a prevention measure, there are some concerns about the affordability. >>and accessibility of getting these injections are right now just to just says a measure to treat hiv. our understanding is that this drug costs more than $40,000 a year of the
12:06 am
actual amount that a patient actually pays can vary, of course. but we also know that there is another prevention shot that sells for $180 a year. but it's taken every 2 months that's still considered pricey for developing countries. so don't so, doctor, are you hopeful that this medication is going to become more affordable once it becomes more widely available? >>this is obviously the most important question because what happened? last week's just ended today in munich, germany. this is called the international aids meeting is there were protests everywhere. every time when it happened, there was mention people were excited and then there was a group of protesters saying you have to make this accessible and affordable and lower and middle income countries because that's where the change hiv burden lies. so it is up to gilead to have to say the company is heard loud and clear and they're talking about voluntary licensing agreements, making it cheaper. 40,000 is not going to be affordable for hiv medication to prevent 1.0. 3 million new infections in low and middle income countries. >>all right, doctor monica
