9:46 am
political upheaval that's been happening. yes. so just starting off to say that, you know, we know that this election season has any number of unprecedented events we're getting used to a first time in our lifetime event happening every 3 to 4 days. the state's saves and that's not good for our nervous system. our brains were developed to experience stress and then change our behaviors. and that was very helpful for us from an evolutionary perspective. but our brains were not designed for 24 hour news cycles and constant barrages of new information that can be deeply, deeply distressing. yes, and especially in the age of social media as well. it seems like information is even more readily accessible at any time at our fingertips. yes, 02:00am not a problem. we can stress right? so what do we do to cope with that and manage that. absolutely. so there are some things that we can do that can literally trick our brains into reminding us that there are things that we can
9:47 am
relax and then there's another thing that i like to talk about. a look at control that so ways that we can sort of it seems mean to say trick our brain. but it does help is we can actually tap into physical ways to de-stress even if mentally we're struggling are worrying ruminating about what's going on politically. so a lot of people talk about deep breathing and for a lot of people, deep breathing drives them nuts because they're trying to relax and deep breathing is sort of too much. it's too too much of an exercise in that moment. they feel like i need to do something. i can't just sit here deep, breathe a sigh. see some really scary article. so instead we suggest that we do something that otherwise occupies us at the same time. interesting. so i may breathing, but i'm also meeting or i'm also doing a satirical or i'm also looking at, you know, modern art that i really like that. i took pictures of the de young and so when i used to work iraq and afghanistan, veterans actually got a lot of these
9:48 am
and little laying a couch so that they had something to do with their hands as well as deep breathing so that they could regulate their nervous system. fantastic to have right there. what are some signs that we can be looking for in ourselves or perhaps our friends family each other? that may be sort of that yellow light red light moment with okay. maybe it's time to take a step back away from the tv set or social media. yes. and maybe see some professional guidance. yeah, it's a wonderful question because everyone like your service said almost everybody is experiencing stress. at what point do we really need to provide some intervention for this person to help them out? red flags are what i like to call them. pink flags that we look at in advance okay. that's fun. all right. things like your if you notice somebody is uncharacteristically irritable throughout the day, if they have a short fuse, if somebody is per separating or ruminating talking about the same thing over and over or
9:49 am
something we see a lot, you know, like you mentioned social media. if somebody is spending many, many hours a day consuming media about the election. so someone will read 17 articles about the same topic to make sure they get every bit of information and it because it can become a little bit of session all during this time of so those are some of the potential warning signs are putting flags to look for. maybe it might be time to have either a gentle conversation with that person or or even even know if it's affecting ourselves to, you know, maybe kind of some additional support. now, i'm also want to ask you this. what's the best way to engage with or perhaps disengage with perhaps a friend or loved one who might have different political beliefs. the press. okay. but during this time we do have a country that's incredibly divided right and so we need to figure out how to navigate those relationships that are important to us. even if we may be across the political divide. and so when we talk to your clients about even in my
9:50 am
own life, something that's really important is noting what you value about that relationship and how can i insulate and experience what i value about that relationship from the political this is particularly difficult if that person is reading 17 articles and spending 8 hours a day on, you know, very social media channels. but how we can do that is putting in from boundaries so say were all gathering for family dinner on a sunday night. and you know, great uncle henry has a different political view than me. then we can say, you know, i appreciate that. but this is family time. let's not bring politics into so allowing that boundary to exist. you can also give the person outlets for that like, oh, i am happy to talk about that, but not around the kids, for instance. so we're not stonewalling. no, we're not saying that. you know, their values are what they think is important. but what we are doing is setting a firm indicator of what we're willing to have in our space. so setting some gentle boundaries. yes, loving boundaries. yes, a loving
