walz joining us right now to discuss all of the factors and the implications of her selection of sonoma state professor david mcewan. wow, so much to talk there's a few things going on through. just a couple, i like laundry of things so. >> i notice that there's a new poll out right now that showing some fundamental changes in the race for the white 10% uptick in pennsylvania. diving down for us. >> yes, so if you take a look at what's going on, there's 2 things you want to pay attention to. one is are these likely voter polls are registered voter polls. okay. we're starting to see some likely voter polls and we're seeing those in swing states. that's important because what we've seen a fundamental shift in the race. what are the expectations for that race and what it looks one of voters have in terms of where they think things are headed. and one of the big things that when you dive into all of these polls that's common is that there's an expectation change with kamala harris and whether or not she can win this race. so that guests for
8:18 am
momentum, that's momentum that extended and we're seeing that fold into some of what we see now in these polls. the other component is the gender difference. that's huge. there's about a 38 point swing that is women favoring her over donald by about 20 to 24 points depending on the poll and then men favoring donald trump by about 15 18 point somewhere in there. that's almost a 40 point swing. we've never seen a gender gap that big. and so that will be an important aspect of this race moving forward as well. >> so at the news conference president trump hat on thursday, one thing that he was kind of mentioning was, you know, the fundamentals of the race, the inflation, the economy, and those kinds of aspects. now, criticism has come to kamala as far as her policies. we haven't heard that much. we haven't really heard that much regards to policy other than the social security aspect. so is it going to be important moving forward that we hear more fundamentals about the race?
8:19 am
>> yeah, that's excellent question because there are some strategic decisions that kamala harris and her team have to make and those decisions include had to deal with the crime issue, how to deal with immigration. they've already start to cut some commercials, onair those related to that for donald trump and republicans, it's going to be more than just crime and immigration. obviously they're going to talk about those things. but they also have to put forward a plan. and that plan has to be prospective about what they will do rather than just generic ideas are generic terms about the economy. it's still concerns about the pocketbook. obviously, the restlessness relative to the stock market and job security and kind of household financial condition. all of those are are in a rainy what voters are feeling under the surface and you have to deal with those things. the problem is is that voters know a lot about donald trump and they're exposing themselves to harrison waltz and learning more about them. so that provides harrison was a little bit more running room, even though we're going hear a lot
8:20 am
about the biden administration and their accomplishments. are there plans and heavy, you know, trying to deal with both candidates relative to that. however, you do have to have some specifics and a vision moving forward, which makes those presidential debates what to some news, at least one, probably 2 and a vice presidential debate. it's going to make those must-watch tv and hugely important to the campaigns as well. >> i was going to say remember at the news president former president trump was m king the saying that, you know, that kamala wasn't very intelligent. and that she's not smart. she's not competent and so forth. is that come into play? well, you think out there for voters? >> play well with female voters and there's more women voters than male voters. this is the difficulty. i think there's some very serious people in the trump organization and running his campaign. why they were doing a press conference like that that would that look less like mar-a-lago and more like morrow loco. you cannot do that. and so that there are
8:21 am
some people who are trying to constrain him and give him a message to run forward and the worry that it will be highly personalized where you attack who kamala harris's, who waltz's and by attacking them personally, that turns off a lot of voters. it will not turn out base voters but it will turn off those 5 people who haven't decided how to vote in pennsylvania or wisconsin or in michigan. and that will be a problem. that's what you need more of a message and less of a medium of attack. in addition, you know, the things that come up, you know, who's in the helicopter and whether the helicopter had an emergency landing is willie brown there, jerry brown, a whole dinner. what all that looks like. donald trump's going to call more on that. and that's going cast him out of touch, burst campaign that has momentum. and that really worries the trump people because then that will also restrict their dollars. and we've already seen kamala harris and walz clear the fundraising gap that they had with with republicans and move forward with that. they can have a lot resources. and so donald trump and his team need get together and they haven't done that so
8:22 am
talking about that. you know, when we talk about walls coming on to the ticket, some of actions as legislation and minnesota >> labeled as progressive. and then this whole thing with kamala as being, you know, liberal, california and so forth. but you didn't really make policy in california. so it's kind of this interesting thing. he did make a lot. he extended the health care benefits. he extension tax cuts for middle class families in regards to working families with the challenge care tax credit. so how is that going work itself out? yeah, i mean, look a mall says that, you you know, dad, midwestern dad, you know, the guy who helps you with your car and and he's going perch be portrayed that way, at least by the harris. >> ticket. but he's also someone who's done a lot of legislation and they did a lot of legislation because minnesota politics are they tend to be more liberal and they tend to be clean. and with the expectation that politics is a game for adults.
8:23 am

little bit as well. this is just a little bit of junk coming in off the pacific a little bit here. instead of being mostly sunny. that's going a little wrinkle in the forecast. lot of 60's in the east bay right now 50's up north 65 san jose. so into the afternoon, by the way, that departs there, those upper level clouds were left with. again, the marine layer a bit at the coast, although you'll see some decent amount of sunshine. don't forget those winds will be coming in. so be a little chilly going on as we get to tonight tomorrow. here we go again. the fog in place got some coastal drizzle even on the east bay shoreline and slower. to clear it looks like as we get those onshore winds and colder temps with all of this. so it will be a little break with a summer. looks like that will feel good winds will be out. you bet today. here's the progress you can see late in the afternoon into the evening hours and tomorrow, a little bit more pronounced little bit more geography covered with all of this. so all the hallmarks we see with a little bit of a break in those highs, putting this all together. we've got

9:17 am
on. and a nice break in the weather will have more on that of the models. looks like next weekend. we fortunate. yeah. thank you that. thank you very good. >> well, last week we vice president kamala harris would choose for her running mate and this week, we now know that it is current minnesota governor tim walz. earlier today we discussed the decision and the implications of her selection is sonoma state professor david mcewan. so much to talk there's a few things going on through. just a couple, i like laundry of things i notice that there's a new poll out right now that showing some fundamental changes in the race for the white 10 1% uptick in pennsylvania. diving down for us. >> yes, so if you take a look at what's going on, there's 2 things you want to pay attention to. one is are these likely voter polls are registered voter polls. okay. we're starting to see some likely voter polls and we're seeing those in swing states.
9:18 am
that's important because what we've seen a fundamental shift in the race. what are the expectations for that race and what it looks one of voters have in terms of where they think things are headed. and one of the big things that when you dive into all of these polls that's common is that there's an expectation change with kamala harris and whether or not she can win this race. so that gives for momentum. that's momentum that extended and we're seeing that hold into some of what we see now in these polls. the other component is the gender difference. that's huge. there's about a 38 point swing that is women favoring. >> her over donald by about 20 to 24 points depending on the poll and then men favoring donald trump by about 15 18 point somewhere in there. that's almost a 40 point swing. we've never seen a gender gap that big. and so that will be an important aspect of this race moving forward as well. >> so at the news conference president trump hat on thursday, one thing that he was kind of mentioning was, you know, the fundamentals of the race, inflation, the economy, and those kinds of
9:19 am
aspects. now, criticism has come to kamala as far as her policies. we haven't heard that much. we haven't really heard that much regards to policy other than the social security aspect. so is it going to be important moving forward that we hear more fundamentals about the race? >> yeah, that's excellent question because there are some strategic decisions that kamala harris and her team have to make and those decisions include had to deal with the crime issue had to do with immigration. they've already start to cut some commercials, onair those related to that for donald trump and republicans, it's going to be more than just crime and immigration. obviously they're going to talk about those things. but they also have to put forward a plan. and that plan has to be prospective about what they will do rather than just generic ideas are generic terms about the economy. it's still concerns about the pocketbook. obviously, the restlessness relative to the stock market and job security and kind of household financial condition. all of those are are integrating what
9:20 am
voters are feeling under the surface and you have to deal with those things. the problem is is that voters know a lot about donald trump and they're exposing themselves to harrison waltz and learning more about them. so that provides harrison was a little bit more running room, even though we're going to hear a lot about the biden administration and their accomplishments. are there plans and heavy, you know, trying to deal with both candidates relative to that. however, you do have to have some specifics and a vision moving forward, which makes those presidential debates what to some news, at least one, probably 2 and a vice-presidential to make. it's going to make those must-watch tv and hugely important to the campaigns as well. >> i was going to say i remember at the news president former president trump was making the saying that, you know, that kamala wasn't very intelligent. and that she's not smart. she's not competent and so forth. is that come into play? well, you think out there for voters? >> play well with female voters and there's more women
9:21 am
voters than male voters. this is the difficulty. i think there's some very serious people in the trump organization and running his campaign. why they were doing a press conference like that that would that look less like mar-a-lago and more like morrow loco. you cannot do that. and so that there are some people who are trying to constrain him and give him a message to run forward and the worry that it will be highly personalized where you attack who kamala harris's, who waltz's and by attacking them personally, that turns off a lot of voters. it will not turn out base voters but it will turn off those 5 people who haven't decided how to vote in pennsylvania or wisconsin or in michigan. and that will be a problem. that's what we need more of a message and less of a medium of attack. in addition, you know, the things that come up, you know, who's in the helicopter and whether the helicopter had an emergency landing is willie brown there, jerry brown and a whole dinner. what all that looks like. donald trump's going to call more on that. and that's going cast him out of touch, burst campaign that
9:22 am
has momentum and that really worries the trump people because then that will also restrict their dollars. and we've already seen kamala harris and walz clear the fundraising gap that they had with with republicans and move forward with it. they're going have a lot resources. and so donald trump and his team need to get it together and they haven't done that so talking about that. you know, when we talk about walls and coming on to the ticket, some of actions as legislation and minnesota >> labeled as progressive. and then this whole thing with kamala as being, you know, liberal, california and so forth. but you didn't really make policy in california. so it's kind of this interesting he did make a lot. he extended the health care benefits. he extension tax cuts for middle class families regards to working families with the challenge care tax credit. so how is that going work itself out? yeah, i mean, look a mall says that, you you know, dad, midwestern dad, you know, the
9:23 am
guy who helps you with your car and and he's going be portrayed that way, at least by the harris, a waltz tiet. but he's also someone who's done a lot of legislation. >> and they did a lot of legislation because minnesota politics are they tend to be more liberal and they tend to be clean and with the expectation that politics is a game for adults. but again, that should be held above board. all of that's going to clash a little with the national kind of conversation of where things are going. but you are going to hear a lot about west coast liberals pelosi light about, you know, willie brown, you're going all these characters about san francisco that they're going to that the that the trump people are going to run. you're going to see those of riots in minneapolis after the tragic killing of george floyd juxtaposed against visuals of homeless on the streets of san francisco. that's what the trump campaign's going to push forward. >> but so far of the harris ticket has been able to move beyond that and communicate, but they do have one problem.
9:24 am
and that's not talking to the press, but they can easily eliminate that issue that i just talking and having a few softball interviews with the press find they'll be ok, but that will come back to some of these economic issues in the world on fire. and what does that look like? and that, again, will make those debates important. it will make the campaign message is important make proxies hugely important. so that is where like a barack obama comes into or, you know, some of those other several relatives to folks that are going to speak on behalf of these campaigns be on the candidates themselves. >> so must see tv, especially for those debates right? you got absolutely must see tv. candace campus. >> thank you very much. always. we really appreciate your insight. what's going on? thank you very much. nice to join you. happy saturday. happy saturday. >> we'll be right back. folks.

tomorrow, a bit into next week as well. still kind of fights. the 2 systems, as you will see here. yeah, look at that low. come around here by friday. that sets the stage for next weekend and even into the following week with some moisture looks like with as well. so this is definitely a break in the heat action. good, solid onshore winds coupled with that, too. so we'll see how that all comes together longer rain. 68 san francisco for today that the coastal to those lower 60's. 76 for burlingame to foster city, 87 carlos. 81, 75 for palo alto, south bay readings coming in mid 80's. meanwhile, we get further inland. you got 95 morgan hill, 91 los gatos east bay shoreline. still managing about 80 or so with tri valley in the lower to middle 80's or 90's, rather today. 93 walnut creek conquered about 95. we're going to probably reduce most of these readings to the 80's tomorrow, east bay shoreline. meanwhile, upper 70's here, berkeley at 73, the lake. a little cool. 74, thank you. onshore winds. 92 fairfield

parking a straight upper 80's and plenty of 90's to dish out today. 85 for napa and 95. meanwhile for santa rosa long-term plan, we've got a lot of 80's on the board here and it gets really interesting towards the end of the week as we just showed you there into the following week. so we'll see how will this all of come together? looks really nice. it does much for delivering saturday. >> a >> wildfire season is heating up as the park fire continues to grow, becoming the 4th largest fire in california history. it is now just under 430,000 acres with only 36% containment. earlier today i spoke with cal fire's jay tracy. how is it going out there? >> hey, good morning. thank you for having me. tell us a little bit about the firefighting efforts. we keep hearing these horrible numbers about the 4th largest in history. >> worse and burning were. is it moving and what is being threatened? >> sure. well, good news give you some numbers real quick.
9:49 am
we're still dealing with a fire that's right. at about 429,000 acres. it's it is 36% contained. we still have 6,000 personnel up here that are doing their best put this thing to bed. the burning in the north east section of the fire footprint up in the mill creek area. but some good news from our for behavioral analysts and some of the weather information that we got this morning from our meteorologist so that we should see some decrease temperatures and a little more in the area there that the fire's going so that's that's good news for us allows our guys you get in there, guys and gals, get in there and do some some good work. >> i noticed that the air quality district putting out advisory. i've seen some pictures coming out of reno that the air quality is horrible. lots of people, you know, going to tahoe and reno, that kind of area. so its really pushing out up into that area, correct.
9:50 am
>> well, i'm not real sure anytime you're around a fire. their qualities pretty rotten. to be honest with you. however, we're here in chico is at base camp and whether he's as changes still hot and still dry. but the skies are clear and blue and and that's that's good and bad for us. but they're quality. hasn't too bad here. i'm sure up on the fire line, then version layers are keeping some of that fire down in it. and it does cause some problems because obviously it's hard see, but also it impacts the ability of our aircraft to get in there and help the firefighters on the ground. i was going to ask you, what is attack today on saturday? >> so we still should have to look at. the numbers were still in the neighborhood of 40 or 50 aircraft that are still available. lot of the pix wing staff has has moved on to other fires in the state. but the the rotor aircraft what are most useful for the firefighters that are in that mill creek area just because of the rugged terrain that they're they're faced

with. >> let's talk about the personal aspect. i mean, do we still have people out of their homes? what i know that i think the last time saw about 128 structures, homes affected, burned. >> well, we have a total of 636 structures that have been destroyed. that's just the whole footprint of the fire. i believe upon that to him aside, there's still a few evacuations that are in effect however, in the butte section on the south part of the fire, all all of the evacuation orders have been lifted to warnings so 600, but are those homes are those barns? and that's a culmination of staff, correct? >> yes, correct. that's a culmination of all structures that could be a detached garage you know, a workshop or something like that. i don't i don't know that they break down specifically the number of residential structures in that number. >> what people know right now as far as you guys fighting this? i mean, it's still very much an active fire. obviously.
9:52 am
>> correct, while, you know, get probably 85 90% of the fire is relatively static. at this point, we're not expecting any growth outside of that northeast area. the northeast areas still pretty angry. and and there's a lot of heat down in that mill creek area just because of of the of the large timber and and feels that they're finding in there so that that is still a pretty active fire. we didn't have any spot. fires are slop over last night, which is a really good indicator that the weather's cooperating a little bit better and allowing our our firefighters to get in there and do a good job. keeping that fire in that mill creek area. the fire ignited by someone. >> there's a suspect was arrested. that person is now facing charges for starting this pushed it into a gulley been sparking cracked and so forth. any salient issues in regards to just we need to take better care and be mindful about our actions as humans.
9:53 am
>> true. i can't really speak on the circumstances around the ignition of this fire. but >> hopefully the officers that have a place that gentleman arrested done their part >> is the one who actually charges. so hopefully they've been able to support their their suggestion of charges and will be held accountable. it's a very sad to see. obviously the impact that something probably in his his opinion in and then meaningless has turned into a pretty significant incident. >> thank you very much for joining us. we really appreciate your time. absolutely. thanks for having me. have a good safe saturday. mike had a heart attack a year ago. but he's still living in the red. with a very high risk of another attack. with his risk factors his recommended ldl-c level
