is coming back to golden gate park this weekend. we've got all the details on the festivities. >> from the area's local news station. you're watching the kron. 4 morning news at 7. >> good morning. thank you so much for joining us here on the kron. 4 morning news. i'm stephanie lin. it's saturday august the 17th. let's get you started with a look at the weather with dave sphar. hey, good morning, stephanie. and welcome back. a warning all. here's a live shot coming in the east bay shoreline. oh, yes, fog revisiting us again. that's going to go aloft. >> cover us up a little bit here. however, we'll probably see some inland clearing and that won't be so much of an issue around the bay. it's going to be depending on where you are when you are a line say from san francisco off toe oakland probably have to deal with some scattered clouds and up north. you might get the pitter patter of a few little showers potentially way up north. here's what happens with the fog here along the coast of his problematic. so if you're headed to the coast today because we have kind of a front or backyard that's going to drive some winds

later today. that may be a little bit of an issue in terms of seeing some we can actually get a lowdown where there it is right there. and this is going to provide the necessary left right at the time we get maximum daytime heating. so there's not a lot of moisture with it because it is still august. but because we're getting the facilitation of this, this lyft of air heating and all the elements we need might pick up a few stray showers up north there in the north bay. and what we worry about is instability, which means lightning is a possibility that's just kind of out there. but if you get the pitter patter, some rain, that's what you're getting there. onshore winds. we expected a nice will pop happening in the east bay. we'll show that to you later. 60's cover most of the board for right now. some cooler 50's off towards the west like half moon bay up to as well. we are a few degrees warmer than this time yesterday and clearing will happen even inland. that's right. it's late morning hours. start to open up the skies nicely and mild temps to upper 70's and only coasting into the lower 80's warner forecast a bit, stephanie. all right, dave, thanks so much. >> it's been about 2 weeks

since a popular shopping district in san jose started charging visitors for parking. but as kron four's jack molmud reports, it has not been a smooth rollout. >> for hours on end on friday, many customers here at santana row were stuck in long lines going to multiple different levels of these parking garages that just recently started charging people to park here at santana row. make people think the lines were so long it appeared that the people who are monitoring those parking meters are just letting them roll right through. >> going up. >> a row. it's the first full week of business since these were installed at san jose's high end shopping destination, pay stations at santana row. sunshine will park dallas park and then will charge me. we'll talk about parking is crazy. even during the rollout customers weren't satisfied. santana row told us it's because everywhere else in this part of town, they have paid parking so customers with part for free at santana row just to shop elsewhere, leading to congestion. and now

new meters are causing even longer lines. not a fan either. see that here is crying. that the first business week with metered parking. >> and now headed into the first weekend. customers tell us the new ticketless method of paying to park. it's confusing. >> the lines were so long at a certain point it appeared workers were just livid cars through. you know, i think it's better. it's trying to cut off the traffic from valley. fair trying to get people to stop parking over here. >> well, then makes harder for us, though, is actually work even people who work at santana row caught in the jam and on a busy day like friday, if you can't find parking in the garage. >> good luck getting out. 20 minutes. we hear. well, this is all new to i don't really come down here that often. and this is probably why is very difficult to get around. >> parking rates are the same as the valley fair across the street. 2 hours free. and then 2 bucks an hour after. but for many customers, the new

payments for parking bring growing pains. >> i'm sure they're going to make much money off that. it kind of that we tried reaching out to management here at santana row to find out if there may be any short-term remedy. >> for this headache customers are describing here in the parking structures and we did not hear back. now, the idea behind santana rose new charging for parking is to have a qr code that you scan when you park and you could pay for the amount of hours you want to park in your spot for its supposed to be a seamless transition, paperless and ticket list. but it's not as seamless as they wanted to be. right now. reporting here in san jose jacmel that kron 4 news. >> san francisco health officials say levels of the latest m-pox variant remain low in san francisco. wastewater scans showed traces are below results from 2 years ago. this comes as a global health emergency was declared over m-pox. so far it has broken out in 13 african nations and spread to europe with more than 14,000 cases and 524 deaths. experts say

this outbreak is also impacting women and children. >> children africa i've gotten about 85% of these infections then use. and 70% of the are to be children under the age of 15. >> medical experts say there's no reason to panic and suggest getting up to date on vaccines. 12 year-old boy is recovering from injuries after dublin. police say he was hit by a car. police say the crash happened around 7.40 friday morning on felon voting, cleese and drive. they say the child was riding an electric bicycle and was in the crosswalk during the collision. as wearing a helmet but still suffered some cuts. the driver involved remain on ene and is cooperating with the investigation. we also got a statement from officials with the dublin unified school district. it reads in part, quote, parents must remind their children to be cautious.

use crosswalks crossing guards and wear helmets for biking or scooter ring. drivers need to reduce speed, stay alert. and above all, remove distractions, pedestrian safety, child or adult requires a serious commitment from all parties. argument that led to a shooting that injured a man in sonoma county. will that still under investigation? sonoma county deputies, they responded to a home on stony point road in petaluma around one thursday morning over reports of a man who had been shot. the man was taken to the hospital and is in stable condition. investigators identified and arrested the suspect after a several hours-long standoff. and the safety of arrested a suspect in connection to a violent road rage incident. the highway patrol says armando martinez followed a driver who allegedly cut him off on the road last week. martinez is accused of then using a window punch. and for tonight to assault the victim and vandalized their car. investigators say martinez also found the victim on social media and started making criminal threats. the

chp says the alleged assault victim managed to take pictures of the suspect, which helped investigators make their arrest. one person is dead after a shooting in berkeley. it happened friday afternoon near the ashby bart center on at a london fairview streets. police say the victim died at the scene. no other information released and no word yet on a suspect. >> is now 3 months into the job in oakland's new police chief says the town still has a long way to go in the past 3 weeks. he says west oakland has seen a rise in assaults, mostly targeting asians and elderly residents. officers arrested 7 teens and one adult in connection to those attacks. >> when does happen or city, we are taking it seriously. and we are putting the resources that we have out there to address the this crime try to prevent the crime moving forward. >> chief michel says the department is stepping up patrols in west oakland and near the westlake christian terrace. community. he says police are working to also improve response times.

>> happening now lanes of highway 101 on the peninsula. shut down for road work. the closures affect one northbound and one southbound lane between bed with shores and east palo alto. caltrans says crews are working to improve highway barriers. both lanes are expected to reopen early monday morning. and take a look at this. a car flipped in san francisco's mission district friday morning blocking the street. there. citizen app video shows the scene near folsom and 24th streets. no word if anyone was hurt. and a fun night for people in san jose channeling their inner picasso's at park view park friday night. this is all part of the city's painting in the park series. about 20 people joined in on the fun, the most popular attraction that night, though, was the snow cones. are police getting a new headquarters? the agency's board of directors approved a 90 million dollar project to

build the new police station in downtown oakland. it will be at the now vacant kaiser permanente building on broadway and 21st street. it's expected to be ready by 2026. the money also be used to create new fare gates in oakland, san francisco and richmond. and the food add festival kicked off in san jose this weekend. that event started friday at the santa clara county fairgrounds. organizers say the goal is to get people to try different cuisines and unique food they might not find anywhere else. bringing something like 90 fried squid, which they might have never seen there before. it's been very fun to come out how it's such a instagrammable larger than your head at. everyone's always excited to see different species. >> wow. look at that giant fried squid. the foodie land event does run through sunday 10:00pm. so a great opportunity to try all different kinds of food out there. live music returns to golden gate park this weekend.

just one week after outside lands, another planet entertainment kicks off the first. >> golden gate park's it concert series. the group also produces outside lands. >> 50,000 people are set to attend that sold out event. the one-day event includes music acts deftones and system of a down city. officials say the concert is slated to bring in almost one and a half million dollars. 90% of ticket sales coming from out of towners. >> going to generate directly. 1.4 million for rec and park, which we can then put back into maintaining stewarding our assets of which we have over 220 parks and open spaces, golf courses, pools, programming for children and seniors and families. >> doors open at one 30 pm shows start at 03:00pm and run until 10:00pm at golden gate park's polo field. >> we're going fight quite a bit of cloud cover a little today. tomorrow. better story, though, a look at what it looks like today. a particular the morning clouds even inland

little front or backyard is kind of pinching the atmosphere here. when you have all this marine layer moisture gets pushed up. and yes, that means cloud cover and potentially maybe even some light rain showers lower 60's off to the east bay up north 50's and 60's. at this hour, we'll do about a 64 for san jose. back to the maps. what i'm talking about, futurecast for here. it is the front or backyard. it's providing the lift that doesn't have a lot of moisture with it. but because we have an ocean right here, we have a little bit of moisture which to play with its the instability. they watch. that means lightning is what we're looking out for. so way up north up in the north bay, lake county points like that, you might get a little in the way some light rain showers today, particularly compliments of daytime heating everybody else across the bay. you're still battling that fog and cloud cover still even in the afternoon will be some scattered clouds around the bay. san francisco golden gate off to oakland in points to the north. you probably have a lot more in the way of cloud cover today that will mix out inland. a little better, though. now, tomorrow, different story. yeah, here's the fog again. reaching all the way down through central

valley. and as you can see, mixes out very nicely, even central valley. sometimes they get locked in there with a actually in the in the valley. there will never mix out. where does along the coast will not a problem. arrow. and here we'll go back to mostly sunny touch. warmer, too. by the way, those temperatures as we gradually warm now with the front or backyard, what happens? you get some winds and that we will get. here's the afternoon pop. you can see most pronounced here in the east bay little bit around solano county as well. and then off to tahoe. that's why they have that red flag warning. no advisories or anything has been issued with that because it doesn't last very long. that will be in late afternoon evening hours tomorrow and a little pop. you can see the develops here. kind of typical. get back to our sing song. summertime pattern. all right. here's sfo for you. hate plane still running here, considerable bay clouds cool, lower 80's. well inland. now, touch warmer going on for tomorrow with better bay clearing next week. we're warming up. warming till tuesday. yes, voices to carry

to have you both here. and i love that. you've incorporate your names and your business is absolutely definitely. yeah, very clear on the men do it when of that message. yeah. you know, tell us a bit about how you both got involved with the festival this year. how does it feel to be a part of it? it's an honor to be a part of it. last year was fantastic. it was the first year. >> but this year, it's even bigger. there's a lot more pizzerias and breweries involved, rain even more so and then we're also part of women in pizza. so it's just a great. a great event. yes, and you you mentioned during the commercial break that you would be at the booth for women in pizza. tell us a little bit about group in that organization. you know, women pizzas, group of women, pizza makers. everybody's invited and we're just there to support each other and lift each other up in a male dominated industry. and tony is nice enough to give us our own booth and bring in a bunch women from all around the bay area to cook together and showcase what we can do. wonderful, tony, being one of

the main organizers of this whole yeah, he's the guy. put it all together. tested will tell us a bit about what you brought for us today. >> yeah, we tried to bring representation of different styles that you're gonna be able to find at the festival. so we've got here. we've got a grandmother's actually 2 different types of grandma. so they kind of grandma grandma style native to the new jersey area east coast. we've also got it right, which is super popular in the pizza industry right now. we've got an artisanal style that comes out of an electric oven and we've also got a thicker sicilian style lovely. so. going back to the grandma concept, why is it called the grandma out of curiosity? this one on the far left here. yes, both of the above. the yeah. i got it. well, we both have different takes on the grandmother. yeah, ok, ok, doris through but grandma, it's because it's the pizza your grandma used to make. so it's something that was quintessential in the home. it was something that your grandma, your mom would easily make in a sheet pan just something super simple and easy and it's evolved

since then. of course, we've got 2 different interpretations, but fantastic. nonetheless, mobley. and then you mentioned the detroit style as well. so what makes a detroit-style pizza detroit-style the signature, the detroit. as you can see here is caramelize cheese crown all the way around the pizzas cooked in a tapered. >> pan so that she's a melt down making me so hungry. wasn't going to be little bit. but yeah, it's their beautiful pizzas delicious or savory. it's fun to make its been to eat. it's got a nice crispy crunch on the outside knows caramelize cheese fantastic. and then you also mentioned the artisan. is that this trigger that says yes. so that's kind of the style i do have my restaurant is more of a california artisan long for men to do. you know, go real fresh toppings. this is a son gold tomatoes from sonoma county made into a vodka sauce and discuss a fresh burrata and basil on so it's a question for the both of you. what is your favorite style pizza? it's a multiple styles

of pizza. so ok, does depend on the move if you're eating by yourself. >> with people right now, i'm all about grandma i'm just into the thin right now. ok? but i love the sicilian. it's one of those very near and dear to my heart is that so here's a silly and it looks big in heavy but is not at all. that is a nice light airy, fluffy pizza. incredible. you know wrong. i don't want and so people will have the opportunity. it said check out all of these different pieces that you guys are offering. >> at the festival. so tell us a bit about when you'll be there and how long the festival is going to be running for. >> so it's a one day event today. only 12 before i think the vip has come in at bagels. big worries from around the bay area. we got all over the bay area. we got pizza from all over the bay area to big carb fest. i do wish us i gonna love it. yes, absolutely. again, this all

morning news. the change in plea from a former heavyweight champ. the latest on the cain velasquez case. and rising from the ashes. helen oakland bookstore is valley to bounce back after a major fire. 7.29. this morning. thank you so much for joining us. we're going to get right to those stories in just a moment. but first, let's get a check on our weather conditions with dave sphar heyday. a good morning, stephanie. good morning, everybody. and the morning fog is greeting us again this morning, however, will break up for much of the bail, though. parts of it. we're still going to stick with some scattered clouds throughout the day. >> around oakland, san francisco, in a little bit in the points to the north a bit might even see a stray shower. here's the shot from sfo. and it's not so much the fog there. looking for quick

equipment glitch ear causing about a 45 minute delay or so. id see planes taking off, however, but we do have some fog there, too. so we have little front or backyard here. there's that low all wrapped up in the northwest. it doesn't have much moisture which to play with, but it's kind of pinching our ptmosphere or a marine layer a little bit. and that may facilitate a few little showers this afternoon up in the north bay, potentially what we really watch out for is lightning with all of them. this possibility we might get some of that to again with daytime heating kind of all the elements are timed perfectly for that. most readings right now are in the lower to middle 60's. not too bad. 69 for antioch. meanwhile, up to the north, lots of 50's and 60's. 64 for san jose and 64 san francisco. there are those winds. we do see a pop this afternoon again, driven by this front. it's more of an issue for tahoe with a red flag warning one on there for much of the day today. there you see the winds currently in the to the teens and we should open up those skies, particularly inland by late this morning

with mostly sunny skies, trying to take over here a little bit here with lower 80's for high temperatures will warm up for tomorrow and then another heat bump, if you will. by tuesday, we'll get more of that longer range forecast hit stephanie. >> former ufc heavyweight champion pleaded no contest in a san jose courtroom for attempted murder. those charges stemming back to a high-speed chase in 2022. when the former fighter shot at a suspected pedophile prop was rob nesbitt spoke with him. a prosecutor on that case. >> the case against cain velasquez has been in the spotlight for the last 2 years because of his celebrity status, but also because of the way he took the law into his own hands. cain, velasquez faces multiple charges, including attempted murder after seeking revenge on suspected pedophile. harry goularte who allegedly molested one of alaska's his children at a daycare. the former ufc fighter engaged in a high-speed chase across san jose. firing shots at goularte and goularte mother and father-in-law. the intended target was uninjured but his

father-in-law survived being hit by several bullets. he took the law into his own hands and we have excellent law enforcement in this county. and he should have gone and used them. instead he put the lives the lives of so many people in danger. velasquez changed his plea from not guilty to no contest friday kron. 4 legal analyst michael cardoza. explain the difference between that and a guilty plea i'm not going to contest >> it's got enough evidence to connect mates. i'm not going to admit i did this. so i will plead no contest. cardoza says this is often done when a defendant is worried about civil lawsuits for the same crime. the former ufc fighter has gain several supporters, including a group that calls for him to be free of his charges is status as a celebrity is not something that i consider. >> crafting a resolution to this case and what i'm going to the judge and i'm asking him to hold this defendant

accountable for his actions. the 2022 incident took place along highway 101, as well as an 11 mile stretch of busy san jose streets. prosecutors emphasize that bullets were sprayed near an elementary school crowded with children. we the sentence that not only gives justice to the victims that were in that car. but also a sentence that demonstrates. that the defendants use gun violence in our county is unacceptable. velasquez remains out of custody on bail. his next court appearance is scheduled for october 18th. >> reporting in the newsroom. i'm rob nesbitt kron. 4 news. >> and it's been a little more than 2 weeks since a beloved college avenue bookstore burned to the ground in oakland kron four's dan kerman reports. >> there has been outpouring of encouragement, financial as well as just general emotional support from people in the community. thankfully, people

worldwide. >> east bay booksellers owner brad johnson says the support he's received since his college avenue bookstore burned down just over 2 weeks ago is energizing simply to know that the sheer number of people. >> the >> support you. and we'll continue support you and that have confidence that you are. able respond to this in a positive way. widely encouraging and it's it's motivating for me. to figure out creative ways to respond. a gofundme web pages already raised more than $217,000. money that will go towards paying employee wages and benefits. >> until they can rent a temporary location. hopefully nearby to set up shop. >> we want to be cared for and a way that when we can't opened in a temporary way, we can hit the ground running. that could take another 3 months considering it will take insurance money from the

fire to restore inventory and the shelving the books it on. in the meantime, east bay booksellers isn't dwelling on the fire which appears to be accidental. instead, it's selling and shipping books from their website. they hope to have a local pickup location soon and hopefully a pop-up location. not long after that. it's about people's curiosities about people's taste about. what they bring with them when when it comes to what we choose to stock, but also what people choose to buy what people choose to talk about within the store. so which is just so many elements of people involved in that such a way that online bookselling just can't do. johnson says there's nothing like a physical bookstore and he's ready for east bay booksellers to return. so many people have written off bookstores and said that we're we're going away. this is just a physical instance of that. and i'm keen to defy all of the odds.

basically, dan kerman kron, 4 news. >> well, a school district in stockton is looking to help students from vaping in school bathrooms. the district has installed special sensors able to detect vapor in the air instead of setting off an alarm that says here's will send a text to school administrators. >> we've always been a anti-tobacco school district. we are aware that very students and young people are using tobacco products may do it through vaping. so these vape sensors are yes, a way of adapting to the more common uses tobacco. >> so far the new technology is getting mixed reviews from parents. they should've out that front and center for governor gavin newsom on friday. he was in the bay area to sign a package of public safety bills. he those we'll tackle the issue head on our capitol correspondent eytan wallace reports. >> well, the governor signed the bills at this san jose

morning, everybody. there's the golden gate bridge. we promise with the towers all covered up. still some ground fog, as you can see in some spots that will be lifted to overcast. >> or to mostly cloudy skies as we get later in the morning hours into the afternoon, we're also seeing the same kind of imagery. downtown is the same kind of stuff we've got as well. there you see the fog kind of in place. this is not the case everywhere in the bay. we are seeing some lifting of this fog and even seeing the sun come out in spots. but there's going to be a problem area. san francisco off to oakland right there in that corridor when we get that onshore, wind will continue bring in that monsoon moisture and jump into the atlantic.

80's at that morning forecast stephanie. all right. looking forward to a day. thank you. >> it's been about 2 weeks since a popular shopping district in san jose started charging visitors for parking. but as kron jack moment reports, it has not been a smooth rollout. >> for hours on end on friday, many customers here at santana row were stuck in long lines going to multiple different levels of these parking garages that just recently started charging people have marched here at santana row. many people saying the lines were so long it appeared that the people who are monitoring those parking meters are just letting them roll right through. >> it's a growing up. >> had a row. it's the first full week of business since these were installed at san jose's high end shopping destination, pay stations at santana row. sunshine will park alice park and then will charge me. talking about parking is crazy. even during the rollout, customers weren't satisfied. santana row told us it's because everywhere else in this part of town, they have paid parking. so

common uses tobacco. >> so far the new technology is getting mixed reviews from parents. issue of retail theft was front and center for governor gavin newsom on friday. he was in the bay area to sign a package of public safety bills. he those we'll tackle the issue head on our capitol correspondent eytan wallace reports. >> well, the governor signed the bills at this san jose home depot store. he says the legislation will make a difference in the state response to retail theft. but critics argue it's not enough. governor gavin newsom receiving applause as he signed 10 bipartisan public safety bills into law. he says. >> combat the statewide issue of retail theft. there has to be some accountability because of the legislation i signed. there will be accountability included in the bill package, the california retail theft reduction act. it will create a penalty of prison time up to 3 years for those convicted of stealin property with the intent to resell it. the

legislation will also allow for what's known as aggregate meaning several thefts committed by one person over a two-year period can all add up to meet the larger penalty for grand theft. also included in the package, a bill to increase penalties for car break ins in another to expend diversion and rehab programs for people in lieu of present. this goes to the heart of the issue and it does it in a thoughtful and judicious way. democratic legislative leaders echoing a similar sentiment. if you break these laws, you will pay the price. it is that simple. but the bills do not touch prop 47. that's the 2014 voter approved a law that changed certain nonviolent crimes from felonies to misdemeanors and loose and penalties for offenses like retail theft. when the items stolen are valued at less than $950. >> supporters say prop 47 resulted in criminal justice reform and reduced california's prison population. but opponents argue it let criminals off the

hook. earlier this summer, prop 36, a ballot measure to reform prop 47 officially qualified for the november ballot. governor gavin newsom has long opposed prop 36, even as a bipartisan coalition of da's and some democratic mayor say it must be passed to reform prop 47, the unintended consequences of prop 47 are unacceptable that there has to be accountability. property 6 takes effect in the 1980's. the war on drugs, mass incarceration promotes a promise that can't be delivered. republicans say they support the retail theft. bill package newsom signed here, but they argue the legislation can only make a lasting impact of prop 36 passes. unlike the retail theft bill package, they believe propped 36 will target all retail thieves. not just organized crime, rick's. they also say prop 36 will penalize fentanyl, drug dealers and increased drug treatment. it is much needed. >> and quite frankly, the governor is out of and the governor says the bill package he signed here is just a

little bit the peninsula, but most pronounced up in the north bay that again, as that front providing some moisture aloft. so it means more cloud cover returning and maybe even the pitter patter, some rain up north. there is the front there again, pinching that marine layer because it doesn't really have that much moisture which to play with its not like a winter storm that we tend to see. wait for that later. onshore winds today will be around and expect a little bit of a pop happening for the east bay and solano county late this afternoon. and this evening, there's the wind advisory with that, but it will pose some red flag warning issues for tahoe this afternoon for much of the day 60's control. most of the bay, in fact, 70 for antioch at this hour. and that is a little bit ahead of where we were from this time yesterday, although we're cooler pocket, you can see there and contra costa and solano counties. the breakdown today, 76 by one by 4. let's try 80. yes, lower 80's even inland. looks like little bit of a minor warming trend early in the week. then cooling back

down again, sort of like a fall spring pattern already. more in your forecast coming up in a bit. stephanie. all right, dave, thank you. it's been about 2 weeks since a popular shopping district in san jose started charging visitors for parking. >> but as kron four's jack moment reports, it hasn't been a smooth rollout. >> for hours on end on friday, many customers here at santana row were stuck in long lines. going to multiple different levels of these parking garages that just recently started charging people to park here at santana row. make people think the lines were so long. it appeared that the people who are monitoring those parking meters are just letting them roll right through. >> going up. >> a row. it's the first full week of business since these were installed at san jose's high end shopping destination, pay stations at santana site on europe are callous park and then will charge me. we'll talk about parking is crazy. even during the rollout customers weren't satisfied. santana row told us it's

because everywhere else in this part of town, they have paid parking so customers what part for free at santana row just to shop elsewhere, leading to congestion and now new meters are causing even longer lines. not a fan either. see that here is crying. that the first business week with metered parking. >> and now headed into the first weekend. customers tell us the new ticketless method of paying to park. it's confusing. >> the lines were so long at a certain point it appeared workers were just livid cars through. you know, i think it's better. it's trying to cut off the traffic from valley. fair trying to get people to stop parking over here. >> well, then makes harder for us, though, is actually work even people who work at santana row caught in the jam and on a busy day like friday, if you can't find parking in the garage. >> good luck getting out. 20 minutes. we hear. well, this is all new to i don't really come down here that often. and this is probably why is very difficult to get around.

>> parking rates are the same as the valley fair across the street. 2 hours free. and then 2 bucks an hour after. but for many customers, the new payments for parking bring growing pains. >> i'm sure they're going to make much money off that. it kind of that we tried reaching out to management here at santana row to find out if there may be any short-term remedy. >> for this headache customers are describing here in the parking structures and we did not hear back. now, the idea behind santana rose new charging for parking is to have a qr code that you scan when you park and you could pay for the amount of hours you want to park in your spot for its supposed to be a seamless transition, paperless and ticket list. but it's not as seamless as they wanted to be. right now. reporting here in san jose jacmel that kron 4 news. >> temperatures go. health officials say levels of the latest m-pox variant remain low in san francisco. wastewater scans showed traces are below results from 2 years ago. recently, the san francisco department of health shared on social media, the seven-day average for cases is

0. this comes as a global health emergency was declared over m-pox. so far it has broken out in 13 african nations and spread to europe with more than 14,000 cases and 524 deaths. experts say the outbreak is also impacting women and children. >> children africa have gotten about 85% of these infections then use. and 70% of the are to be children under the age of 15. >> medical experts say there's no reason to panic and suggest getting up to date on vaccines. a 12 year-old boy is recovering from injuries after dublin. police say he was hit by a car. police say the crash happened around 7.40 friday morning on felon voting gleason drive. they say the child was riding an electric bicycle and was in the crosswalk during the collision. he was wearing a helmet but still suffered some cuts. the driver involved

remained on scene and is cooperating with the investigation. we also got a statement from officials with the dublin unified school district. the statement reads in part, quote, parents must remind their children to be cautious news crosswalks with crossing guards and wear helmets for biking or scooter drivers need to reduce speeds, taylor and above all, remove distractions, pedestrian safety, child or adult requires a serious commitment from all parties. argument led to a shooting that injured a man in sonoma county, sonoma county sheriff's deputies. they responded to a home on stony point road in petaluma around one thursday morning over reports of a man who had been shot. the man was taken to the hospital and is in stable condition. investigators identified and arrested the suspect after a several hours-long standoff. we'll see if you're arrested a suspect in connection to a violent road rage incident. the highway patrol says armando martinez followed a driver who allegedly cut him off on the road last week.

martinez is accused of then using a window punch and folding knife to assault the victim and vandalized their car. investigators say martinez also found the victim on social media and started making criminal threats. the chp says the alleged assault victim managed to take pictures of the suspect, which helped investigators make their arrest. one person is dead after a shooting in berkeley. it happened friday afternoon near the ashby bart center on at a london fairview street. police say the victim died at the scene. no other information was released. no word yet on a suspect. it's 3 months into the job in oakland's new police chief says the town still has a long way to go in the past 3 weeks. he says west oakland has seen a rise in assaults, mostly targeting asians and elderly residents. officers arrested 7 teens and one adult in connection to those attacks. >> when violent crime does happen our city, we are taking it seriously. and we are putting the resources that we have out there to address the

these this crime and try to prevent the crime moving forward. >> chief michel says the department is stepping up patrols in west oakland and near the westlake christian terrace. community. he says police are also working to improve response times. >> happening right now, lanes of highway 101 on the peninsula shut down for roadwork. the closures affect one northbound and one southbound lane between bedouin shores and east palo alto. caltrans says crews are also working to improve highway barriers. they're both lanes expected to reopen early monday morning. take a look at this car flipped in san francisco's mission district on friday morning walking the street. as you can see there citizen app video shows the scene. that's near folsom and 24th streets. no word if anybody was hurt or how that car flipped over in the first place. a fun night, though, for people in san jose channeling their inner picasso's a park view park friday night. this is all part of the city's painting in the

park series. about 20 people joined in on the fun painting snow cones. as you can see there. of our police getting a new headquarters. the agency's board of directors approved a 90 million dollar project to build a new police station in downtown oakland. it will now be at the now vacant kaiser permanente building on broadway and 21st street. it's expected to be ready by 2026. the money will also be used to create new fare gates and oakland, san francisco and richmond. the foodie led festival kicked off in san jose this weekend. the event started friday at the santa clara county fairgrounds. organizers say the goal is to get people to try different cuisines and unique food. they might not find anywhere else, bringing something like 90 fried squid, which they might have never seen there before. it's been very fun to come out how it's such a instagrammable food item. where is larger than your head? and everyone's always excited to see

different teams. >> the foodie live event does run through sunday, 10:00pm. so still some time to check it out. >> live music returns to golden gate park this weekend just one week after outside lands, another planet entertainment kicks off the first golden gate park concerts series. the group also produces outside lands 50,000 people are set to attend this sold out event. the one-day event includes music acts deftones and system of a down city. officials say the concert is slated to bring in almost one and a half million dollars. 90% of ticket sales coming from out of towners. >> going to generate directly. 1.4 million for record part that we can then put back into maintaining stewarding our assets of which we have over 220 parks and open spaces, golf courses, pools, programming for children and seniors and families. >> doors open at one 30 pm

rain showers. meanwhile, up north, it's the instability for the lightning that we worry about tomorrow morning. there's the fog yet again, clears out real quick little bit warmer, too, but at least we'll take care of this fog for you a little bit quicker at the coast will probably see even there some better clearing them today. so definitely want to plan on maybe extra sweater and the onshore winds, which, by the way, there's the pop this afternoon. good coverage up there in the north bay. and that may have want to like a stormy feel, maybe because lot of cloud cover and maybe some drizzle thrown in there. meanwhile, in the east bay in solano county, the pop is very pronounced little bit of this tomorrow. but the front system is pretty much gone by this point. the be driven by the inland heating factor a little bit here for us. so this what we got considerable bay clouds even into the afternoon, cool with lower 80's going on in. even that's well inland are going to see 70's. meanwhile, by the bay now, tomorrow, different story, scattered clouds but warmer. we've got temperatures going on to the 70's for the bay in those

upper 80's going on in london. then next week warming till tuesday because voices carry or something lower. 90's and cooling later in the week that lower 90's will happen on tuesday. and we'll be back to lower 80's again by next weekend because of low is digging in here. 69 san francisco, 72 for open 81 san jose and the big board. look at this one. have the purples and all that kind of stuff. 82 for antioch, up north, even some greens and yellows, 70's in place this this week for august. next couple of days, it looks like this warming up a touch by monday. and again, that's going to be warming trend till tuesday. we'll start to get some lower 90's been willing off again, the latter portion next week here. so for august, this is like a little flavor you know, the spring fall type thing like the seasons want to change. but it's well before the equinox. don't get too excited. when is the official first day of fall? as you know, the equinox inside september. 21st somewhere around there. okay. with quicker. so we got this our side of the hemisphere in the northern hemisphere. so it's still hot. just about a month

celebrate that diversity and the artistry of san francisco. so the hungry ghost festival this year is our second time doing actually channels of free, long-standing cultural tradition, both in the chinese as well in the chinese american or chinese diaspora community where, you know, the angriest goes will come out. and so all the customs and rituals, it's really about healing at reconciling through these kind of we rate ok, got it. so how do we calm down the angry and the hungry ghosts on this on this day? yeah. so in traditional customs, we would, you know, have food offering out and will have performances. so the festival is really meant for both the human realm and our yeah. so so the way we say it's like we invite, you know, all of san francisco and their spiritual community and there goes to come attend that's the of the fun. and so again, the second year that you guys are doing tell us a bit about how many vendors are going to be out there that going to be performances as well.

the neighborhood. and that's great. and that's again at 04:00pm today. yes, okay. fantastic. in terms of just the cultural significance and just why it's so important that the community is celebrating this can you walk us through that? >> yeah. so you know, it was after the pandemic when we conceptualize a festival like this. and i think that was the time where our community felt very close to things like death and grief and anger, too. >> and so the the hunger go cecil is something that's been celebrated in early chinese american community throughout california between the mid 1800 to the early 1900 month don't know that. and so festivals, like these has always been a healing part, you reconciling with things like family separation, wrongful deaths among up there. very kind of angering moments of american race's history. and so it's very out that we're bringing this festival back and having it route in san francisco, chinatown as well, kyra. in terms of today's festivities in this weekend's festivities, are there any must try booths,

morning. everybody was still were battling the fog across much of the b.y. still at this late hour. and is this frontal system passes by and kind of pinch is that marine layer? >> it just gives us more cloud cover to deal with today. so today fighting a lot of cloud cover to the around the areas near the water and so forth that will change tomorrow. ucs battling some fog here at sfo, but no delays. now that's all been cleared out. so looking pretty good on that front. now, there again is our low and the winter months of tense provide some better sprinkles and some showers. but this time of year, it's a nice, buster. in this particular case, it's providing that lyft to provide maybe some showers up north and the north bay. we're just kind of watching a potentially because of daytime heating of a couple of strikes. lightning there, 72 antioch. but most ratings across the bay in the 70's or 60's rather with a 74 in is, well, there's your onshore winds. expect that to pop a little bit more. so in the front gets closer. solano county little bit up in the north bay, too. and the east bay over the east bay hills. it'll be most apparent now inland. better clearing. we're

going to mostly sunny daytime highs, not bad in the lower 80's today. you're gonna notice a nice little jump happening tomorrow with those highs elsewhere throughout the bay. little bit of a warm-up to with some better clearing as well. more in your longer range forecast coming up in just a stephanie. all right. thanks so much, dave. >> former ufc heavyweight champion pleaded no contest in a san jose courtroom for attempted murder. those charges stemming back to a high-speed chase in 2022. when the former fighter shot at a suspected pedophile. trump was rob nesbitt spoke with the main prosecutor in the case. >> the case against cain velasquez has been in the spotlight for the last 2 years because of his celebrity status, but also because of the way he took the law into his own hands. cain, velasquez faces multiple charges, including attempted murder after seeking revenge on suspected pedophile. harry goularte who allegedly molested one of alaska's his children at a daycare. the former ufc fighter engaged in a high-speed chase across san jose firing shots at goularte

and goularte mother and father-in-law. the intended target was uninjured but his father-in-law survived being hit by several bullets. he took the law into his own hands and we have excellent law enforcement in this county. >> and he should have gone and used them. instead he put the lives the lives of so many people in danger. velasquez changed his plea from not guilty to no contest friday. >> kron 4 legal analyst michael cardoza. explain the difference between that and a guilty plea i'm not going contest >> it's got enough evidence to connect mates. i'm not going admit i did this. so i will plead no contest. cardoza says this is often done when a defendant is worried about civil lawsuits for the same crime. the former ufc fighter has gain several supporters, including a group that called for him to be free of his charges is status as a celebrity is not something that i consider. >> crafting a resolution to

this case and what i'm going to the judge and i'm asking him to hold this defendant accountable for his actions. the 2022 incident took place along highway 101, as well as an 11 mile stretch of busy san jose streets. prosecutors emphasize that bullets were sprayed near an elementary school crowded with children. we the sentence that not only does justice to the victims that were in that car. but also a sentence that. demonstrates. that the ants use gun violence in our county is unacceptable. velasquez remains out of custody on bail. his next court appearance is scheduled for october 18th reporting in the newsroom. i'm rob nesbitt kron. 4 news. >> it's been a little more than 2 weeks since a beloved college avenue bookstore burned to the ground in oakland dan kerman explains what happened. >> been too. >> outpouring of encouragement financial as well as just general emotional support from

people in the community. thankfully, people worldwide. >> east bay booksellers owner brad johnson says the support he's received since his college avenue bookstore burned down just over 2 weeks ago is energizing simply to note that the sheer number of people. >> the >> support you. and we'll continue support you and that have confidence that you are. able respond to this in a positive way. and widely encouraging and it's it's motivating for me to figure out creative ways to respond. a gofundme web pages already raised more than $217,000. >> money that will go towards paying employee wages and benefits. >> until they can rent a temporary location. hopefully nearby to set up shop. >> we want to be cared for and way that when we can't opened in a temporary way, we can hit

the ground running. that could take another 3 months considering it will take insurance money from the fire to restore inventory and the shelving the books it on. in the meantime, east bay booksellers isn't willing on the fire which appears to be accidental. instead, it's selling and shipping books from their website. they hope to have a local pickup location soon and hopefully a pop-up location. not long after that. it's about people's curiosities about people's taste about. what they bring with them when when it comes to what we choose to stock, but also what people choose to buy, what people choose to talk about within the store. so which is just so many elements of people involved in that such a way that online bookselling just can't do. johnson says there's nothing like a physical bookstore and he's ready for east bay booksellers to return. so many people have written off bookstores and said that we're we're going away. this is just a physical instance of that. and i'm keen

to defy all of the odds. basically, dan kerman kron, 4 news. >> its school district in stockton is looking to stop students from vaping in school bathrooms. the district has installed special sensors able to detect vapor in the air instead of setting off an alarm, the sensors will send a text to school administrators. >> we've always been a anti-tobacco school district. we are aware that very students and young people are using tobacco products may do it through thing. and so these vape sensors are yes, a way of adapting to the more common uses tobacco. >> so far the new technology is getting mixed reviews from parents. well, sure, retail theft was front and center for governor gavin newsom friday. he was in the bay area to sign a package of public safety bills. he vows will tackle the issue head on capitol correspondent eytan wallace reports.

>> well, the governor signed the bills at this san jose home depot store. he says the legislation will make a difference in the state's response to retail theft. but critics argue. >> it's not enough. governor gavin newsom receiving applause as he signed 10 bipartisan public safety bills into law. he says. >> will combat the statewide issue of retail theft. there has to be some accountability because of the legislation i signed. there will be accountability included in the bill package, the california retail theft reduction act. it will create a penalty of prison time up to 3 years for those convicted of stealing property with the intent to resell it. the legislation will also allow for what's known as aggregate meaning several thefts committed by one person over a two-year period can all add up to meet the larger penalty for grand theft. also included in the package, a bill to increase penalties for car break ins in another to expend diversion and rehab programs for people in lieu of present. this goes

to the heart of the issue and it does it in a thoughtful and judicious way. democratic legislative leaders echoing a similar sentiment. if you break these laws, you will pay the price. it is that simple. but the bills do not touch prop 47. that's the 2014 voter approved a law that changed certain nonviolent crimes from felonies to misdemeanors and loose and penalties for offenses like retail theft. when the items stolen are valued at less than $950. supporters say prop 47 resulted in criminal justice reform and reduced california's prison population. but opponents argue it let criminals off the hook. >> earlier this summer, prop 36 a ballot measure to reform prop 47 officially qualified for the november ballot. governor gavin newsom has long opposed prop 36, even as a bipartisan coalition of da's and some democratic mayors say it must be passed to reform prop 47, the unintended consequences of prop 47 are

threatening any land in time. the near future today with this front or backyard and pinching the marine layer a bit. we're going to have that issue of cloud cover for the coast. it may be an issue a little bit for san francisco in portions of the north bay opening up in the east bay. nicely. then tonight the fall comes back again. fills up central valley opens up nicely quickly for tomorrow afternoon. and we're going to up those temperatures a little bit in terms of what their fairing out today. there's that low in our backyard, providing the relief today. it quickly departs. and then as we get to tuesday, that's when the he pump comes our way. and then another low breaks this up. so we're starting to see these lows peel off a little bit from the gulf of alaska. hinting that the season is trying to change a little bit, but it's still august. still early. want to get much the way of rain from these things at this level, this lower latitude like this typically havn wait to later in the season. we're going into la nina. so maybe it'll be a drier one for us, but at least of the season will be changing

later on. but nice to see that in august and at least provides a nice little break in the heat a bit at that. 69 san francisco for today. again, lot of cloud cover to get through, kind of on and off throughout the day. the coast will be more socked in here. so through the sweater on coupled with that good onshore wind clip. 74 burning again do about an 80 here, redwood city, palo alto. meanwhile, the south bay, we're starting to see the clouds depart here a little bit as well. 81 san jose cupertino and 80 mid to upper 70's line up the east bay shoreline, tri valley. you're looking at lower 80's walnut creek, concord, about 80 to castro valley. 75 68 for berkeley. 66 vallejo, 79 for fairfield. 73 for napa. and what about a 76 for santa rosa? so again, we'll do it about tuesday, about 92 in wednesday's own. there and cooling off quickly with another low piercing down south. here and providing some nice relief in the next weekend. so, you know, that's a pretty good forecast yeah, we like the sound of some thanks a lot to.

we're also part of women in pizza. so it's just a great. yes. and it at least you mentioned during the commercial break that you would be at the booth for when a pizza sauce. a little bit about that group in that organization. you know, women pizzas, group of women, pizza makers. everybody's invited and we're just there to support each other and lift each other up in a male dominated industry. and tony is nice enough to give us our own booth and bring in a bunch women from all around the bay area to cook together and showcase what we can do. wonderful, tony, being one of the main organizers of this whole yeah, he's the guy. put it all together. have tested. will tell us a bit about what you brought for us today. >> yeah, we tried to bring representation of different styles that you're gonna be able to find at the festival. so we've got here. we've got a grandmother's actually 2 different types of grandma. so they kind of grandma grandma style native to the new jersey area east coast. we've also got it right, which is super popular in the pizza industry right now. we've got an

artisanal style that comes out of an electric oven and we've also got a thicker sicilian lovely. so. going back to the grandma concept, why is it called the grandma out of curiosity? this one on the far left here. yes, both of the the yeah. i got it. well, we both have different takes on the grandmother. yeah, ok, ok? through that. yeah. but grandma, it's because it's the pizza your grandma used to make. so it's something that was quintessential in the home. it was something that your grandma your mom would easily make in a sheet pan just something super simple and easy and it's evolved since then. of course, we've got 2 different interpretations, but fantastic. nonetheless, mobley. and then you mentioned the detroit style as well. so what makes a detroit-style pizza detroit-style the signature, the detroit. as you can see here is caramelize cheese crown all the way around the pizzas cooked in a tapered. >> pan so that she's a melt down making me so hungry. wasn't going to be little bit. but yeah, it's their beautiful

dec as we head into the latter portion next week with highs only about 80 or so. that's some sweet action right there. and maybe some bay clouds to contend with of all of that, too. so we're kind of watching a little bit inte of a change of the seasons. it's still a little early. but in august, we like to see these breaks should mention. now we're still in monsoon season. so this month next month that moisture bubbles up from the south. i did talk earlier about hurricane ernesto. that's effecting any land anymore. it's moving away from bermuda. but there is a little low that's kind of tropical in the pacific thing is we try to watch sometimes is come up through the gulf of california, sometimes in the desert southwest that can throw moisture our way and give us some monsoon thunder showers. but all of that not happening. so we're still monsoon season for a month or so. but looking pretty i so enjoy weather fireside chats. okay that's right. thing to look, a piper may be a little >> all right. thanks so much
