you're looking good morning, stephanie. good morning, everybody. yeah. underscoring the fact that morning fog again. >> visiting so typical sfo. they're reporting a minor delay happening here about a half-hour from some low ceilings. you can see some leftover fog off to the >> to the hills and the background. but on balance here, your temperatures right now, a lot of 60's on the board here. 59 for half moon bay. 65 going on for san jose. so that low level moisture. what's going on as we progress clears out for the most part going through. just may be some scattered clouds out there for the bay and the coast may be somewhat variable clouds, but everybody's looking improve on that front and bumping up those afternoon highs a little bit for this afternoon. getting into monday. we still have some leftover sprinkles right along the coast here overnight tonight and into your monday morning as well. but that's still also said with our kind of our typical marine layer thing and that'll happen basically tonight through your monday morning. there's the fog again, mixing out nicely and we go back to mostly sunny mode will need to as temperatures really start to move over the next few days. we're going to getting into that a little bit more so and the peak of head as there's

another heat spike coming our way. all right, sunday, there's the onshore winds this afternoon, noon very typical in the afternoon evening hours won't be as pronounced as we saw from yesterday. however, do want to point out some winds along the coast here for monday evening. little bit more popping out that way, too. so the breakdown for scattered clouds, sunny inland, a touch warmer as the deal today will be having that in the 4 zone forecast early in the week reaching the lower 90's for tuesday. it looks like tuesday's the big day to watch before temperatures start to slide back to finish off the week. that's what we're calling for. 70 ish for the bay as we finish the week. lower 80's happening inland. and these are spots that are working at the lower 80's by tuesday. we'll be into 66 san francisco for today. 72 for oakland, 78 meanwhile for san jose. again, this is today highs in the big board here. we're getting up to now the middle 80's a little warmer than yesterday. also from the north bay here, 81 santa rosa. 66 meanwhile, san francisco in 63 for half moon bay next

couple days lineup like look at that sun trying to appear on through the bay bridge 85 for sunday monday about 85 as well. and 92 as we get to tuesday later on check of the 4 zone forecast and also that extended stephanie. >> all right, dave, thank you so much for your health. the world health organization this week declared m-pox a global health emergency so far has broken out in 13 african nations and spread to europe with more than 14,000 cases and 524 deaths here in the bay area. san francisco public health officials say levels in the city remain very low. the seven-day average now at 0 cases. joining us live to discuss the potential risks and warnings for m-pox is cal state east bay associate professor and public health chair. dr are not encouraging. good morning to you, doctor. >> well, it's definitely good to be here. >> so perhaps you could clarify the situation for us here in the bay area. so we know that san francisco public health officials, it seems like they released these numbers revealing that there
7:18 am
was m-pox detected in san francisco wastewater. but you know how serious should be. should we be looking at the situation here? >> so first of all, there, as you understand that the world health organization has declared a global emergency for m-pox, which is different from a pandemic. just to be clear and the global emergency really is around the spread of a new variant of m-pox in mostly in the democratic republic of congo and other areas of africa. and so that's new strain called clade so that's really been limited to the african continent. the first case of imported m-pox under this new variant was just caught in sweden this past week for somebody who travel there. so it's it's important to know that the what we're seeing in the wastewater m-pox is a prior strain and that strain very low. both in the bay area and in the united states. to that extent, there really is no cause for major concern as opposed to other viruses that are circulating within the
7:19 am
site. >> understood. so in terms of vaccination, which is still considered of the best ways to keep ourselves safe. will this latest vaccine that's out there to treat m-pox. does that also addressed this new strain that's being seen in africa now in parts of europe? >> to my understanding is yes, that the current vaccine that's available on the market in for distribution has durability against this new strain of the new strain is about, you know, 6 months old. so we don't know a lot. what we do understand is it might be more transmissible. i want to reiterate that the spread of m-pox as opposed to covid happens very slowly. secondly, it requires very close physical contact. so imagine hugging, engaging in behavior, sharing of linens, bedsheets, those types of things. so it's not respiratory virus to spread. it varies. the spread is very slow. and then the symptoms present very slowly, flu-like sort of profile, followed by a characteristic rash that happens with any pox, if you will. that being
7:20 am
you know, basically the global emergency is a cause for vigilance that we know something is happening in congo and the and rest of africa. it is going to be important to mobilize all of our public health resources from countries that have have more resources to do so to deploy vaccines and antivirals to those areas. before we see in the importing of cases. but nonetheless, i want to reiterate that cause for concern is very low. and as you mentioned in san francisco, the average case rate of 0. and that's even with a prior circulating version of the virus in the united states. doctor, thank you so much for clarifying on the fact that we are looking at 2 different strains. >> of m-pox and that the strain that was found in san francisco recently >> is different from what we're seeing now in this outbreak in africa and also impacting parts of europe. very helpful. the station there. now in terms of best practices that people can do to keep themselves safe in the bay area. and just in the u.s.
7:21 am
in general, what is your guidance there? >> so i think with the covid pandemic, we've been very attuned to paying attention to our bodies and how they react a certain things. so just like with any other virus, you know, if you are noticing something on, you know, you and a lot of the symptoms are nonspecific flu-like symptoms. but in the prior pre-covid world, we tended to ignore those. and i think we just have to have a little bit of heightened vigilance, of course, for something like m-pox, your risk goes if you probably have any contact with somebody who has traveled to, you know, the african continent, or you've been engaging in behaviors that, you know, have a lot of close body contact. that being said, you know, i think if you notice something that, you know, resembles any kind of viral infection and that lingers within a 24 to 72 hour window. i think it's important to go. get checked out to go. get tested, just like you would with any other infection. the good thing about m-pox, if you can say that is that we have a lot of medications, both for
7:22 am
preventive purposes like a vaccine, but also antiretroviral treatment that if somebody is infected, we can get it under control pretty quickly as long as it's come to the notice of medical professionals are. >> got it, doctor. and just quick additional point of clarification, are there any differences in symptoms when it comes to these 2 different strains. >> you know, i've looked at the clade once trained, you know, it's relatively new. i haven't seen anything definitive that suggests that the symptoms of the the different strains are remarkably different. so i think if it presents like a pox, you know that remember for those of us as old as i chicken pox that the hawks moniker israeli characteristic of a rash profile that happens across the so it's something like that should you know, the present itself? you know, i think it's a safe bet to go. get checked out by medical professional. more so than not. it's probably going to be nothing of concern. but i think we just need to have
7:23 am
individual inc in these times globalization. and, you know, viral circulation. >> all right. cal state, east bay, associateaprofessor and public health care doctor are not mukherjee. thank you so much for your time. this morning. we appreciate it. >> thank you, stephanie, for having me.

9:48 am
should we be looking at the situation here? >> so first of all, there, as you understand that the world health organization has declared a global emergency for m-pox, which is different from a pandemic. just to be clear. and the global emergency really is around the spread of a new%variant of m-pox in mostly in the apdemocratic republic of congo and other areas of africa. so that new strain called clade so that's really been limited to the african continent. the first case of imported impasse under this new variant was just caught in sweden this past week for somebody who traveled so it's it's important to know that the what we're seeing in the wastewater m-pox is a prior strain and that strain very low. both in the bay area and in the united states. to that extent, there really is no cause for major concern as opposed to other viruses that are circulating within society. >> understood. so in terms of vaccination, which is still considered one of the best ways to keep ourselves safe.
9:49 am
will this latest vaccine that's out there to treat m-pox. does that also addressed this new strain that's being seen in africa now in parts of europe? >> to my understanding is yes, the the current vaccine that's available on the market in for distribution has durability against this new strain of the new strain is about, you know, 6 months old. so we don't know a lot. what we do understand is it might be more transmissible. i want to reiterate that the spread of m-pox as opposed to covid happens very slowly. secondly, it requires very close physical contact. so imagine hugging, engaging in behavior, sharing of linens, bedsheets, those types of things. so it's not respiratory virus to spread. it varies. the spread is very slow. and then the symptoms present very slowly, flu-like sort of profile, followed by a characteristic rash that happens with any pox, if you will. that being you know, basically the global emergency is a cause for vigilance that we know
9:50 am
something is happening in congo and the and rest of africa. it is going to be important to mobilize all of our public health resources from countries that have have more resources to do so to deploy vaccines and antivirals to those areas. before we see any importing of cases. but nonetheless, i want to reiterate that cause for concern is very low. and as you mentioned in san francisco, the average case rate of 0. and that's even with prior circulating version of the virus in the united states. doctor, thank you so much for clarifying on the fact that we are looking at 2 different strains. >> of m-pox and that the strain that was found in san francisco recently >> is different from what we're seeing now in this outbreak in africa and also impacting parts of europe. very helpful. the station there. now in terms of best practices that people can do to keep themselves safe in the bay area. and just in the u.s. in general, what is your guidance there? >> so i think with the covid
9:51 am
pandemic, we've been very attuned to paying attention to our bodies and how they react a certain things. so just like with any other virus, you know, if you are noticing something you know, you and a lot of the symptoms are nonspecific flu-like symptoms. but in the prior pre-covid world, we tended to ignore those. and i think we just have to have a little bit of heightened vigilance, of course, for something like m-pox, your risk goes if you probably have any contact with somebody who has traveled to, you know, the african continent, et or you've been engaging in behaviors that, you know, have a lot of close body contact. that being said, you know, i think if you notice something that, you know, resembles any kind of viral infection and that lingers within a 24 to 72 hour window. i think it's important to go get checked out to go. get tested, just like you would with any other infection. the good thing about m-pox, if you can say is that we have a lot of medications, both for preventive purposes like a vaccine, but also antiretroviral treatment that
9:52 am
if somebody is infected, we can get it under control pretty quickly. as long as it's come to the notice of medical professionals are. >> got it, doctor. and just quick additional point of clarification, are there any differences in symptoms when it comes to these 2 different strains. >> you know, i've looked at the clade once trained, you know, it's relatively new. i haven't seen anything definitive that suggests that the symptoms of the the different strains are remarkably different. so i think if it presents like a pox, you know if remember for those of us as old as i chicken pox that the hawks moniker israeli characteristic of a rash profile that happens across the box. so it's something like that should you know, present itself? you know, i think it's a safe bet to go. get checked out by medical professional. more so than not. it's probably going to be nothing of concern. but i think we just need to have individual inc in these times globalization. and, you know, viral circulation. >> all right. cal state, east
