rain expected all across the region, causing some concern about downed trees, power outages, and potential flooding. >> this is ktvu fox two news at 730. >> and we are back on storm watch tonight. thank you for joining me on this wednesday evening. i'm heather holmes. strong winds, rain hitting most of the bay area right now in san francisco. the rain came down on market street soaking people who were walking and biking downtown and to the south cal fire. ccu responded to a vehicle accident on interstate 280. in san mateo. luckily, though, no one was hurt, but the slick roads likely played a factor in the east bay. a strike team at fremont fire is staged and ready to roll out in case of any emergency, such as downed trees or debris flow, and in emeryville tonight, slick roads and puddles forming there on city streets. now we have live team coverage of this latest storm. our crystal bailey live for us now in oakland, where it is really coming down. but first we want to go to our

meteorologist, mark tamayo and mark. things are starting to pick up and also move south. yeah that's that has been happening. >> heather. in fact, we have more advisories to talk about as the rainfall rates pick up and the kind of expand over the bay area, the rainfall totals updated here. you can see these numbers adding up kentfield over two inches of rain. santa rosa a 1.76. san francisco is up to 0.61. oakland 0.33. here's a look. this is our live camera looking out toward the golden gate bridge. and just look at this. we have some pretty heavy downpours here, some strong gusty winds and still the rainfall rates will continue to pick up in the short terme. all these areas we are talking about flood advisories indicating flooding is happening. at least some minor flooding up in the north bay that flood advisories in place until 1045 this evening for marin. you can see it's in place until 11:00. and recently this has been expanded to include san francisco and san mateo counties. that's in place until 1115 this evening. so here's a look of the storm itself on the satellite. this back edge. this is going to be linked up with some pretty good downpours, at least in the short

terms forecast. so that will be approaching our coastline over the next 1 to 3 hours. a very active radar all day long, and things have been picking up just over the past 3 to 4 hours. these are all the storm reports. as you can see over the over the bay area. and of course, the focus of the heavy rain has been up in the north bay. reports of you can see at 101 cars hydroplaning in 8 to 10in of water out toward concord or martinez. reports of some standing water as well. so this is the active radar for this evening up in the north bay. we could see some convective elements and what that means that could kind of enhance the rainfall intensity as these cells move onshore. it's a more coverage in the south bay closer to san jose. and also the santa cruz mountains. so we're talking about heavy rain, the short terme. what about your thursday forecast? looks like we're still talking about some scattered rain showers. we'll have more on that with your update in just a few minutes. >> all right. thank you so much, mark. well now we want to go to our crystal bailey. as i mentioned she's live in oakland

with a look at the conditions there. crystal >> well, heather, it's been very wet and very windy earlier today. i could barely hang on to my umbrella because the wind gusts nearly flung it right out of my hands. and the rain has just been nonstop. pretty much all day over here in the east bay. now, actually, i would advise if you are out, i would say to stay home. hopefully you are at home and eating dinner with your family and not out in the elements like myself. take a look at this video. we shot this earlier today during the evening commute over in emeryville. that's that intersection of i 8580 and the 880. now you can see the roads are pretty slick. and as people are coming on their way home, uh, the rain just kept coming on down. and some, most drivers in the area say that it was pretty safe and they were staying slow and steady as they came home. and the rain is good. >> the rain is great, you know, and you know, we need it. stay under the speed limit, you know, you know, watch your, uh, you know, watch your excess because, uh, because with the rain, you

know, especially, like, on the outer lanes and on, uh, on the left and on the right, you know, a lot more a lot of that water accumulates. so you know, being able to, to manage that as well, you know, so you don't let hydroplaning and things like that. >> and these conditions will probably continue into tomorrow morning's commute. so stay with us as we continue to track the storm over the next couple of days. over here on ktvu. for now, i am live in the east bay back to you, heather. >> all right, crystal bailey, thank you. will the threat of flooding has north bay rescue teams reviewing their plans? there are three swift water rescue teams in sonoma county. santa rosa fire officials say the crews there checked their gear this morning and are ready to deploy to fast running creeks and rivers, but they say the biggest danger from the storm appears to be the wind. >> the more, um, problems thing for us that we're kind of looking out for is we already have that moist soil, and with the predicted winds coming through, our biggest worry is a

lot of those trees coming down in some of these neighborhoods in sonoma county, roads and highways have been seeing steady rain since mid-morning on northbound highway 101, hydroplaning led to a multi-car crash. >> fortunately, though, the chp says that no one was hurt. santa cruz county officials activating their emergency operations center ahead of the storm. they have opened two shelters in santa cruz and in watsonville for some of the roughly 1800 unhoused residents here, officials say. while rainfall totals are trending down, they're also keeping an eye on damaging winds and pg and e is dealing with thousands of customers who are without power across the bay area, likely due in some part to the stormy conditions. these are the bay area counties now with the most outages. so right now, san mateo county has more than 2600 customers without power. 1100 customers in sonoma county are in the dark. there are about 100 customers in each marin santa clara and contra costa counties without power. tonight, pg and e working to get the power back on and we are tracking this storm live on fox local. there you can find weather updates from our

you may know adam schiff's work to protect the rule of law, or to build affordable housing, or write california's patients bill of rights. but i know adam through the big brother program. we've been brothers since i was seven. he stood by my side as i graduated from yale, and i stood by his side when he married eve, the love of his life. i'm a little biased, but take it from adam's little brother. he'll make us all proud as california senator. i'm adam schiff and i approve this message. sesame street character elmo. here it is. elmo. just checking in. how is everybody doing?
7:41 pm
well, that's what he asked. but what happened next was likely unpected. thousands and thousands of people responded, giving very honest answers, with most feeling blue. one user saying every morning, i cannot wait to go back to sleep every monday. i cannot wait for friday to come. another said elmo, we've been better. and the third response that we found elmo. we are tired. all of these responses prompting elmo to follow up, saying that it is important to ask a friend how they are doing, and the official sesame street account will itrillionesponded as well. sharing some mental health resources. so here with me now live is pam oren, a clinical psychologist with kaiser permanente. pam, it's always a pleasure to have you here. this question posed by elmo really exposed how a lot of people are feeling right now. it's not good a lot of people expressing dread . >> a lot of people. yeah, yeah. >> why do you think that is? i think there's so much going on in the world that feels out of
7:42 pm
people's control right now, such as the situation in the middle east, even the election that's coming up, people don't, you know, there's a lot of anxiety and a lot of depression that's floating around. >> and when you have someone as non-through and non-judgmental as elmo asking how you're doing, i think people feel more free to express themselves. >> yeah, i think i for myself was surprised by the flood of responses, and it seems as though people were quite happy with with being honest about how they were feeling. i mean, you had people talking about job losses, others, you know, saying, i'm having marital issues. i mean, real honest discussions to elmo. yeah, i mean, you know, like, so, so and people talking about you know, concerns about society as a whole. so again, why do you think it is that people felt comfortable? is it really the elmo character or the fact that this is a discussion that you can have on social media? >> i think it's both. and i think it is because elmo is that beloved character that a lot of us remember who is supportive and kind and nurturing and caring and listens. and i think
7:43 pm
people feel more free to express themselves when they are masked by social media. mhm. >> so as i mentione how do you t that people deal with those feelings of, let's just like elo was asking you to do. right to. so check in with your friends. it's okay to say things like, hey, this has got me a little anxious, or i'm feeling a little worried and concerned about this . do you mind if we talk about it and if you aren't feeling that way, but you notice somebody else's, be like elmo. check in with your friends. check in with your family. hey, how are things going? is everything okay? because loneliness is also skyrocket. and so if we can prove that we are social creatures, right. so we need that social connection. yeah. you mentioned the loneliness factor. >> we just did a story yesterday with san mateo county declaring lonely this, you know, a mental health crisis because so many people are experiencing it. when you talk about the prevalence, though, of anxiety and
7:44 pm
depression in 2020, 29% of american adults reported a depression diagnosis at some point in their life. that is nearly ten percentage points higher than in 2015, according to gallup. i mean, obviously, we're in the midst of a pandemic, so you can understand why people might be feeling that way. but what do you think? aside from that, might be contributing to the way people are feeling right now? >> i think a lot of people aren't finding meaning in their lives. they're not finding meaning. they're not finding joy. so it's about getting us back to finding things that bring us meaning. and that that really nurture our mental health. so when people aren't engaging in those simple behaviors, eating right, sleeping, exercising, being social, they tend to feel more depressed and more anxious. and because we run on such a fast pace, we often that's that's what falls to the side. and i really, you know, i say to my patients all the time, we've got to build this into your schedule . we have to find time to do this. okay. >> and aside from taking those steps for ourself, what could we do as family and friends to
7:45 pm
support people as well? >> be like elmo, um, check in with your family and your be opl and caring. it goes a long way. >> that is the lesson tonight from elmo. really appreciate your time today. um, pam, thank you so much once again for coming in. appreciate it. okay. well, we have other news to talk about tonight and that is a major endorsement in the race to represent oakland in congress, who representative barbara lee has endorsed to succeed her. >> and in barry, whether we are still tracking some heavy downpours moving from the north to the south, how long will the rain will stick around as far as the heavy rain? here's our live camera looking out toward the bay bridge toll plaza. and we're talking about a second storm that's going to impact your weekend. we'll have the update coming up. you want to see who we are as americans? i'm peter dixon and in kenya... we built a hospital that provides maternal care. as a marine... we fought against the taliban and their crimes against women. and in hillary clinton's state department...
7:46 pm
we took on gender-based violence in the congo. now extremists are banning abortion and contraception right here at home. so, i'm running for congress to help stop them. for your family... and mine. i approved this message because this is who we are.

this is video now from santa clara county. fire. they got to work this morning clearing a tree that fell on a car. it also took down power lines. this was in saratoga. the department says they are up staffed with two additional engines with two firefighters per unit. they also have a two person crew ready to respond to downed trees. and that really is the story for agencies all across the bay area. as this storm picks up some steam and also, this is just the first system that we're expecting. >> yeah, it's still a bit fuzzy as we head towards sunday, heather, but that one potentially could be stronger than this one. so it's always a challenge when you have one storm. but then kind of back to back, that's when you get some real issues out there. so yeah, we're definitely a big concern with that. and take a look at our live camera at the golden gate bridge. and just in the short time, the key concern is to just be very careful on the roadways. you can see this live camera picking up on a pretty good downpour. and we have reports of some flooded lanes across portions of the bay area.
7:49 pm
so those intense downpours continue to kind of expand over the region. as a result, we have multiple flood advisories. this has been kind of expanding in coverage. you can see up in lake county, mendocino county, sonoma county that's in place until 1045 this evening. parts of marin county until 11:00. and then also for san francisco and san mateo county. that's in place until 1115. and this might expand even more into the evening hours. the winds also a big factor. all these areas. we're talking about a wind advisory and then all the areas in red, a high wind warning closer to the coast. and for the higher elevations of the east bay. so here's the satellite and the radar. you can see the system still moving into northern california in the bay area. the back edge of that cloud cover that will be linked up with some pretty good downpours, at least for this evening. so right about here, this section still has to move in for tonight. so look at all the rain coverage out there as you can see. and these are all the storm reports kind of blossoming over the bay area just over the past few hours. and still right around it looks like out toward los altos. reports of some flooding during the 6:00 hour. as far as the
7:50 pm
radar coverage there, you can see up in the north bay this is the loop over the past hour. those cells moving across the north bay reports of some heavy rainfall also out towards san francisco and oakland, extending out toward the east bay and then still covered from san jose to morgan hill to gilroy. looks like we have some heavier downpours moving into the santa cruz mountains. the winds, as we talked about, we have wind advisories and high wind warnings. some areas we have a calm wind, but the oakland airport winds out of the south at about 23 miles an hour. half moon bay. look at that wind report gusting to over 40 miles an hour. when you see these wind reports, keep in mind the sunday storm could even be stronger as far as a river. check guerneville right now, rushing river 11ft. expected to go to 24ft. still below flood stage thursday afternoon, and the san lorenzo river at big trees. as you can see, 5.6ft right now. expected to go to 12.8ft early tomorrow morning. so here's the forecast model still tracking the rain tonight. and then tomorrow. some off and on scattered shower activity. it's not a washout, but still, don't
7:51 pm
be surprised. you could still encounter a downpour out there. and then here's the first system. and then as we take this into to the weekend, especially by sunday, that next system developing and that will be a source of some more heavy rain and some strong winds as well. so off and on, showers tomorrow, you might see some sunny breaks as well. and there's the chance of an isolated thunderstorm. scattered showers in your friday. saturday is actually looking okay with mostly cloudy skies, and then we're going to bump up those rain chances. heavy rain and very strong winds back in the forecast by sunday. >> okay mark. thank you. the 49ers they haven't even hit the ground yet in las vegas. and i'll tell you more about that in a moment. but also don't don't forget to download the fox weather app, especially right now as we are tracking those storms. so be sure to do that. okay, now to the story about the 40 niners. and they are set to arrive in vegas soon. and already the wilson football factory is hard at work producing the official football for the super bowl. that factory is based in ada, ohio. leather gets cut, shaped and stitched to
