and it was a little bit frustrating. there are still tens of thousands of people across the bay area who don't have electricity this morning. >> we'll tell you why. it may take several more days to get the lights back on. and a shock for the music world. country music singer toby keith has died at the age of 62 what we n know about how he died from ktvu, fox two news. >> this is mornings on two. >> well, good morning to you and we thank you for joining us. welcome to mornings on two. i'm dave clark. >> good morning i'm pam cook. it's tuesday february sixth. pretty clear actually was on my way in. let's check in with steve paulson. any signs of rain ? >> well, it's not raining over san jose right now, but most of us have cleared out of here, so it's much cooler. a lot of 40s, maybe a few upper 30s after everything is said and done. but there's a lot of moisture in the air. but 40s on the temps here. everyone's pretty close. santa rosa at 43 and right there, a
4:01 am
little bit off santa cruz, monterey, san mateo coast and right over san jose, a little bit of activity popping up. so we're mostly done. there will be a system swinging in here tomorrow to kick off some rain. nothing compared to what we had a couple of days ago, but 50s, mainly upper 50s for all here. a little bit below average, never below average, always above. here he is mr. sal castano steve good morning to you. >> and we are here looking at a very nice looking start to the commute. it is early. let's go to the bay bridge. you can see traffic looks very nice with no major issues here. and it's dry, so. right now traffic is moving along pretty well on interstate 880 and on the san mateo bridge as well. heading out to the peninsula, traffic continues to look very good. and if you're driving in the south bay, it is quiet. there in that silicon valley commute 401. let's get back to the headlines. all right. >> thank you. sal. nearly 95,000 people are still waiting for their power to come back on after that deadly storm caused widespread outages over the weekend, crews said that they
4:02 am
have restored power to hundreds of thousands in the bay area since sunday. the north bay remains the hardest hit at this point, with more than 40,000 people still impacted by outages . >> i was just on a job this morning where one eucalyptus tree took out at nine poles and they've been on scene since sunday trying to restore power to this particular neighborhood. >> pge says it is using the break in the rain to inspect all the damage. by the end of the day tomorrow, the utility also says it's aiming to have the power restored to most customers by the end of the day. on thursday. now, in both marin and sonoma counties, pg and e crews are still out working to restore the power and ktvu zac sos tells us that people in one part of san rafael have been in the dark for more than a day. >> very nerve wracking. >> and, you know, getting to sleep last night was hard for everyone. >> mia brits eyeing the storm damage across her street in fairfax asked how close the tree
4:03 am
came to falling onto her home. do you mean the first tree incident or the second tree incident? a stump, all that's left of a massive tree that crushed her car and skimmed the edge of her roof two weeks ago. then on sunday night, the wind started gusting. >> really, really strong. and so we were looking up and we watched the whole thing just come down and shatter the carport. still shaken and grateful. >> no one was hurt. the storm sending trees toppling all across fairfax, some into power lines, sending much of the town into darkness. there's no late night sales at this 7-eleven, where an employee eyed all the food they'll likely have to toss out. it's all too close. >> no lighting, pg and e grappling with mass outages all across the region and san rafael, most customers understanding they're trimmed almost every year by pg and e, so i feel like the utilities do the best job they can. >> still, there was frustration over what one customer described
4:04 am
as a lack of communication from the utility provider. we're hooked up with them. >> they're supposed to give us notification, and they can't seem to give us any indication of when power may be turned back on. >> meantime, tad jacobs, who owns tree masters tree service, says when it comes to downed trees, we're likely not out of the woods just yet. a lot of the trees have been destabilized with the winds last night, and all the rains that have saturated the soil, and there could just be small, fine roots hanging on, holding a tree up. >> telltale signs that your tree could be at risk if you see any big cracks in the trunk of the tree, or fractures in the soil near the base of the tree, that's something you're going to want to alert your arborist about and get them out there to take a look at it right away. >> and tad jacobs says he's expecting to be busy with current jobs and perhaps new downed trees through at least the end of the week in san rafael, zac sos, ktvu, fox two news. >> all right, zach and a call for help from san mateo county supervisor david canepa, who posted on x quote pg and e, we
4:05 am
need help in san mateo county, please let there be light. i'm getting so many calls from seniors and families worried about their food that spoiled in their fridges. and in san diego, emergency officials are on standby deploying several swift water rescue teams. cal fire has also deployed swift water rescue teams. the latest weather forecast say. san diego by today could get up to 2.5in of rain, flash flooding remains a big concern in santa barbara county this morning. >> take a look at some of this video. this is from montecito showing streets turned into raging waters rivers during heavy rain. the storm this week is forecast to bring 6 to 12in of rain in the mountain areas near santa barbara this morning. all evacuation orders in the county have been lifted and it just keeps raining in los angeles, causing lots of problems. >> strong winds and heavy rains are causing mudslides and debris flows in areas already
4:06 am
saturated. homes on hills are sliding as the ground gives way. even buildings on flat land are seeing water levels get higher. my friend comes in and he's like, i just tread up the hill in mud. >> we looked outside and there's a foot and a half of running water outside of the house, and it starts seeping through the doors. >> now, officials in los angeles remind everybody, stay away from fast moving water. firefighters used a helicopter to rescue this man who jumped into the los angeles river to rescue his dog. that crew, the man, his dog, all returned safely to drier land. if you want to get extended weather coverage, don't forget to download the ktvu fox local app for your smart tv. you can find stories there about storm damage and closures, as well as power outages. >> a pedestrian was killed on eastbound interstate 580 near the 238 interchange in hayward. the chp says it happened at 6:00
4:07 am
last night and involved two cars. the crash is under investigation, but the chp says it appears the victim was involved in a separate crash in the westbound lanes before he was hit on the other side of the freeway. >> our time is now. 406a man trying to rob an oakland pizza parlor in the diamond district got a lot more than he bargained for when store employees fought back, including grabbing a hammer from under the counter. >> it's just unbelievable. they they have the courage to do this . they have to fight against them now. >> the robber left and when he came back, the cashier called 911 and grabbed the hammer for the store. employees say this is the fourth time this year robbers have targeted that pizza parlor in the earlier incidents, robber stole either the safe or the cash register. the owner says she and her staff work seven days a week. she worries she'll have to close her business. city council member janani ramachandra is trying to get more police patrols in the
4:08 am
area. >> i completely understand the sentiment deeply of wanting to take things into your own hands. >> now none of the restaurant employees were hurt in this incident, but they're still dealing with the trauma of facing robbers several times in just a few weeks, retail theft was the focus of a meeting with san francisco leaders last night. >> district attorney brooke jenkins and members of the san francisco police department held the public discussion, and they say they're looking for solutions. supervisor rafael mandelman organized the event. he represents the castro and noe valley and says the walgreens is in. those neighborhoods have been hit hard in recent months. >> it's very alarming for shoppers and it's very alarming for folks who work in these stores when, you know, six or a dozen folks come in and just start sweeping stuff out of the off the shelves, we have to change the supervisor. >> mandelman says the police department is under staffed and more officers are needed to help stop retail theft. last year,
4:09 am
the board of supervisors approved an extra $25 million for police overtime in three. tech companies have pulled their conferences out of san francisco's moscone center. >> you know, the companies workday, samsung, young and twilio canceled plans to host conferences at san francisco's convention site this year. that's going to hurt hotels and restaurants that depend on the business of convention attendees . dreamforce, however, is still scheduled to hold its event in moscone center in september. >> country music legend toby keith has died. his family issued a statement saying keith died peacefully last night surrounded by relatives. they say, quote, he fought his fight with grace and courage. keith was diagnosed with stomach cancer in 2022 and last september said he went through a roller coaster experience in treatment. his songs included should have been a cowboy and red solo cup. toby keith was 62. >> it was stunning to hear this. a sad story toby keith. our time
4:10 am
is now 409. we're still checking weather for you a lot. steve paulson is right here. >> still a little bit of rain. not a lot, but a little bit. still hanging on here, especially down towards milpitas , san jose, sunnyvale. you can see this popping up. campbell. right there. so if you're under that you're like, yeah, it's still raining now. most locations are not experiencing much in the way of any rain, but we'll keep some in the forecast a little bit. on the san mateo coast, most of it off the coast. but i would not be surprised if an isolated shower or two pops up. there's a lot of moisture still in the air. we have another system on the way that will be here tomorrow to bring back some rain. it will be a quick mover though, but i could see another 10th of an inch to maybe a half inch of rain. let's face it, every system coming in seems to be over producing here, so i would now today you're okay, but tomorrow i would plan on some rain. after that, it does look like we'll get a break here. 40s on the temps. 30s up kelseyville is 3640s for most here. so cooler morning 50s in southern california. and the numbers are coming in now for
4:11 am
southern california 30. truckee 26. south lake tahoe. and it continues to rain. los angeles had their third highest two day total, not first, highest, not second, third highest of. 703 seven inches and 3100 for a two day total. this is 50% 50% of their yearly average fell in two days. how about that? um the greatest amount was 7.98 december 31st, 1933 to january 1st, 1934. but still, it's raining. it's still raining down there. they're not done yet. our system is falling apart to the north, and that low will swing into southern california to keep the beat going down there. but after tomorrow's system, we are looking much quieter, much drier , at least for a while. there are some hints about, uh, 12 or 14 days out. something might change. a little quick hitter for snow tomorrow. that'll help. a couple feet on top of what we had over the weekend or last couple of days. we'll start to
4:12 am
move in again. as for them, as well, tomorrow the system will be colder. it's coming out of the northwest, so chilly morning, 40s, few pop up showers, sun and clouds, cool. isolated shower too. and not surprise it will not be 5758in san rafael. if it is, i would not go there, but it will be 5859 for just about everyone else. >> thank you steve. san francisco surveying the damage from the storm. coming up, we take a look at the cleanup efforts after strong winds caused problems in several neighborhoods in the city and the 49ers are in las vegas for the super bowls opening night. >> we'll look at some of the fun and the electric moments in vegas as the two teams settle in . and just a quick reminder, you can now stream ktvu news on your smart tv. you can watch live newscasts and see stories on demand on your amazon fire tv, roku app, tv or android tv. just search for the fox local app, then select ktvu

go with the proposed stadium project for the a's in las vegas . the lawsuit, filed by the group strong public schools nevada and other education leaders say the project required two thirds approval by the state legislature. nature. not a simple majority, and they're arguing that makes the project illegal. now that bill provides up to $380 million in taxpayer funds to build that baseball stadium on the las vegas strip. last november, major league baseball unanimously approved the a's relocation bid from oakland to las vegas before the big game. >> now just five days away in
4:16 am
the san francisco 40 niners and the kansas city chiefs took center stage in the first big event of the super bowl week in las vegas. >> and ktvu joe fonzi was right there for this huge media extravaganza. and the party the nfl now calls opening night. when the 40 niners entered allegiant stadium, it was something like, you might imagine the way gladiators would come into the colosseum in ancient rome. >> a group of veteran 40 niners have been here before and are eager to get another chance at the game in which they fell short for years ago. >> got to enjoy moments like this, like the amazing fans that we have. uh, the time, the downtime you have with your brothers that's on our team. and like little things like that. but let's not forget what we're here to do and that's to win the game. it took a lot of years. >> you know, a long journey. and we earned the right to have another opportunity at it. >> there's a terme referred to as a media scrum. and that certainly applied to what the two teams biggest stars experience out there back in the
4:17 am
super bowl for a reason. >> it's because of the leaders that they have and the accountability they have. and right now, um, they're playing some good football. >> it's a really tough business. and, um, it humbles you a lot. >> you have to learn who you are as a football team and who who you are as a person and as a teammate. and i think we've done a great job coming together through adverse times and just find a way to get here. and now let's go win it. i always wanted to be ready for whenever my opportunity came. >> i didn't know if i was going to, you know, be a backup for a while in the nfl and maybe get a shot in 3 to 4 to five years. um, but sure enough, you know, early in the season when i had a backup, jimmy, when trey went down, i was. >> all right. >> if it come sooner. so i have to be ready for it. >> that about wraps it up for the somewhat serious football. all the players do their best to answer the silly questions. his favorite athlete. i say lebron, do you know a good burger place in las vegas? >> you know what? >> there's an in-n-out burger right across the street. you can check it out. >> i don't know too much
4:18 am
spanish, but i will say vamos niners. >> with so many media outlets now involved, this event has become as much about the people asking the questions as those trying to answer them. >> uh, well, you know, access knows who's the next big question for andy reid was, uh, hard or soft tacos. >> what kind of uniform is that? >> it's like a do you remember the past years when the ladies sells cigarets and it's something similar? >> what did you guys ask patrick ? there will be plenty of less than serious questions as the week wears on, but in that category, this evening was probably the peak. joe fonzi, ktvu, fox two. >> yeah, thank you, joe, for bringing all of that to us. the super bowl's opening night celebration came just hours after the first controversy of the big game. now reports surfaced earlier in the day that the 40 niners are not happy with the condition of the field at their practice facility at unlv. now, 40 niners players and coaches reportedly complained
4:19 am
that the turf is too soft and spongy and possibly even dangerous. but nfl commissioner roger goodell strongly defended the condition of the field. it's well within all of our testing standards is, uh, it is something that we think all our experts, as well as neutral field inspectors, have all said you unanimously that it's a playable field. the 40 niners reportedly considered moving to another field, but head coach kyle shanahan now says he has already seen some big improvements in the surface, and the team intends to stick with its current practice site at unlv. the chiefs are practicing at the las vegas raiders facility in nearby henderson, nevada. >> our time is now 419. it's still not too late to make plans to go to las vegas for super bowl weekend, but the options are limited. and guess what? the price is keep going up. last check southwest airlines still had some available nonstop flights from all three bay area
4:20 am
airports to las vegas. the least expensive flight we found just under $400. and once you get there in vegas, hotel rooms off the vegas strip, they cost about $200 a night. however for the popular casino resorts, those are starting at 400 a night and they go up from there, way up the least expensive tickets to the super bowl began at more. than $6,500. i'll see you when you get back. >> yeah. wow. that's a lot. and you have to eat. >> yeah. you do. >> you know, stay to do some things, but yeah, steve paulson want to get away. >> no, not at that price. no, not at that price. >> people who bought their their tickets now see southwest. you can cancel or change, right. yeah if people were smart, they bought their tickets a long time ago. betting you know, that they would go, that they probably. there's probably some people out there. >> look, i'm sure they did. yes. all right. or they upgrade to
4:21 am
the a you know you get the a block. >> yeah 15 bucks. there you go. >> that's what i always do. all right. let's go. here we have a little bit of activity. uh, we're not done yet. we're done with the widespread rain. but watch this outside brentwood. byron. maybe antioch. nothing. nothing. ah, there it is. right there. and that's exactly what's happening. also down to san jose . right there from milpitas, maybe over to sunnyvale. cupertino you know, campbell, san jose, glen ellen, uh, these systems popping up. why? well, because we have deep, low pressure over us and the air aloft is really cold for this time of year. so with any sun breaks, it would not take much. i think we'll get some scattered showers today. uh, i don't know with this cold air. maybe an isolated thundershower. i'll mention it, but i don't think so . but the beat goes on in southern california. just some incredible amounts here. a few 30s, i mean, talk about cold air. we are much cooler here this morning. a lot of 40s showing up, you know, probably won't get too much colder. the dew points, amount of moisture in the air is still pretty high.

truckee 30, south lake tahoe 2653 santa barbara, los angeles 54. palm springs and san diego. and the rain just keeps on going. sepulveda dam dave 12in of rain. >> are you kidding? >> that's a lot. anywhere but that's a really a lot. wow um, malibu hills, almost nine. um woodland hills, 11.25, and beverly hills eight and a third. eight and a third. and los angeles is now up to 708. and they're not done. this system will continue to give them rain today into tomorrow. then there are signs of improvement. but this is a big time event for them. we are on the drier side, but we're not done yet. we will still get some activity and a system sweeps in late tonight tomorrow to pick up the rain. again, nothing too heavy. it will be a quick mover, but uh, again, maybe a 10th of an inch to upwards of three quarters is the one forecast model showing three quarters for half moon bay and about a half inch plus in the santa cruz mountains. some snow will make it in the mountains after this system. wednesday then there are multiple signs saying that we'll start to see a little decrease
4:23 am
in activity and some improving conditions. but if you're going to the mountains tomorrow, there will be some snow. and again, this is a colder system coming in today, though a mix of sun and clouds, some pop up showers, few isolated showers, thunder showers. it's going to be a cool day with temperatures in the 50s across the board. coast bay and inland. >> all right steve, thank you. a proposal in congress to deal with the border crisis. it's falling apart. we'll tell you why. the opposition of it is getting stronger and swimming could reduce symptoms of menopause. >> the new study that looks into how the popular outdoor activity can help

in two districts of sonoma county, including the harmony union and cassia school districts, are closed today because of power outages and other problems. ktvu spoke with pg and e last night about their timeline to restore power to everyone in. and then we have a little bit of a break in the rain and we're able to really go out and assess those power outages that remain. >> our goal is to assess all the damage by the end of the day tomorrow. >> back out here, live in san mateo county at the public works yard in redwood city. they have an online reservation system for people to reserve and pick up premade sandbag. they don't apparently want people bagging it themselves, but we put a link to that reservation system on our website ktvu.com. but again, the bulk of the heavy rain and the wind has passed, so now it's just a question of maybe people having some concerns about some drainage in their area and maybe some pooling standing water that may be why they still want some sandbags. and the cleanup

thursday before it finally starts to calm down a little bit. we'll have a few little isolated little garden variety showers today, but most of the energy is off the coast and rotating down towards southern california. so we're on the drier side here, but there's some cold air aloft. i'll say mount diablo is at 35 with some sun breaks that will generate a little bit of lift here later today. and i would think some scattered shower activity will pop up 40s on the temps few 30s napa airports at 43 petaluma is at 42 menlo park says hey hey, not so fast. we're 41, so it is much cooler here. 30s in the mountains. the more snow is on the way. not only on wednesday into early thursday, but maybe late friday. a weak little system will brush us. we are on the northern edge of a lot of this. we'll still get a few little guy showers popping up, but boy, it will continue to be, i think just a lot of rain continuing in southern california for at least 48 hours. we have a pretty good little system. tomorrow it'll be rain. uh, we'll get that late morning, early afternoon and then maybe a little bit lingering into thursday. by then we'll be on the drier side, but
6:40 am
the sierra could deal with a little bit more in the way of snow, not only on wednesday night, thursday morning, but again, maybe just some light stuff on friday night. but the weekend does look good. so once you get past friday, i think you're all right to go there. uh, friday won't be that much, but tomorrow will be pretty good. snow chilly morning, some fog out there, a few pop up showers, sun and clouds, cool, a few scattered showers, isolated showers, 50s on the temps. we're staying cool here for a while. i don't see us really warming up. maybe a little bit though. by the weekend. >> all right, steve, thank you. time now, 640 movie star leonardo dicaprio comes here to northern california to tell you about the new movie featuring several california cities. >> all right. first, let's check in with garcia in our newsroom for the other stories we're following for you. good morning. >> good morning, pam and dave. when i join you in studio, many rideshare drivers have complained that the job isn't as lucrative as it used to be. some lyft drivers say they've earned less than 70% of their fares last year, coming up at seven. the big announcement from the rideshare company today about pay transparency and pay structure at lyft. then gap is making a headline hire the big

still slamming southern california right now, especially in areas that have steep hillsides like you see here. the fox weather correspondent max gordon, who goes everywhere you're near the beverly glen area of la right now. they've seen a lot of storm damage. so what's it like out there now? max >> hey, good morning. well, it continues to rain here in los angeles. this storm has really been kind of stalling over the la area, dumping immense amount of rain and really, areas like this here in beverly glen, this neighborhood of los angeles has seen tremendous damage from mudslides in all, there have been 307 mudslides across los angeles, a local state of emergency is in place, but you can see the damage to this home right here. it's actually been
6:45 am
knocked off of its foundation, then pushed down the hill from the force of the mud as it slid down here. now, we have seen just so much rain. you can see it's still actually coming down and it's still flowing down. this hillside right here. some rain gauges here in the los angeles area have seen nearly a foot of rainfall in just the past couple of days, with this latest storm. so much water in such a short amount of time means that the soil is absolutely saturated and well, it's giving away in situations like this. there have been five homes here in the la area that have been red tagged. they can't go in them, they're just too dangerous. seven have been yellow tagged. i meaning that people can get in, get their belongings, but they have to get out. there has to be extensive repairs done to those homes before they can be occupied again. there have also been water rescues here in the la area and also in san bernardino county, but there is some good news in ventura and santa barbara counties areas where we were expecting things to get really bad. things didn't shape up to be as bad as they could

have been, and evacuation orders have been lifted in those areas. but here in la, the threat for landslides really has not gone away. and it's going to continue on the next couple of days. even after this storm pushes out, because the land is just so wet right now that there's still that immense risk for landslides. back to you. hey max, before you go, i know that area. >> i spent a lot of time there. have you ever seen anything like this? and our meteorologist, steve paulson, has been talking about the fact it just doesn't stop. how does it hit you for actually being there? >> absolutely. i mean, la does get rain right? it is a mediterranean climate. and, you know, it rains here. but to have this amount of rain in such a short period of time, you know, really the only thing that i can liken it in my career chasing extreme weather was down in kentucky, where we saw flash flooding in some steep ravines and steep canyons down there. so
6:47 am
a similar situation not exactly a parallel, but a similar situation down here where you had just so much water, where it just had nowhere to go. and then you're having landslide activity like this, like we're seeing behind us, you know, 307 landslide guides just in los angeles alone. that's an incredible amount. just driving around. you see it all over the place. you know, you go down mulholland drive and the iconic road there, and you're seeing just the land slipping away. and crews here, they just have so much work ahead of them in the cleanup process. yeah. >> and i know mulholland is just above where you are right now max. you'd be careful as well. max gordon from fox weather, thank you for the update from los angeles. we appreciate you. all right. max time now. 647. and don't forget you can get more on this story and more like it on the fox weather app. just use your phone. you can scan that qr code. it's right on your tv screen or you can go to fox weather dot com. it is now 647.
