has conflicting views. thanks so much for joining me tonight. i'm heather holmes. people were a bit surprised by carolyn goodman's comments on a podcast when she said that the a's should figure out a way to stay in oakland. yeah the mayor of las vegas saying the a's should stay in oakland. she tried to clarify by her remarks. our crystal bailey spoke with fans here in the bay area, and crystal, the mayor, believes the team should remain loyal to its fan base right here in oakland. >> well, that's right, members of the oakland 68 and oakland sports super fan group say they're glad las vegas mayor carolyn goodman supports fans in the town. she was interviewed on the front office sports today podcast, where she shocked the mlb fans with her comments about the team's possible move to sin city. mayor goodman commented on the passion of oakland sports fans who still come to vegas for those raiders games. as you can see there, she said john fisher, the a's owner, needs to listen to the people in oakland. goodman made those comments after mentioning that the a's had turned down a larger stadium

location in downtown las vegas before deciding on the old tropicana hotel, and during the interview, she expressed concern about the team moving to the strip. >> i personally think they've got to figure out a way to stay in oakland and make their dream come true. >> throughout the past few years, we've heard a lot of reports of mayor goodman, you know, openly courting the a's, trying to get them to come to the city. um, so to hear her say something like that was, uh, pretty surprising. and in a statement sent to us later, mayor goodman clarified that she is very excited about the prospect of a major league baseball team in vegas, and she would welcome the a's to her city. >> she also said, in a perfect world, the a's would have a ballpark on the water in oakland. the oakland mayor, shang tao, said in a statement. i agree with mayor goodman 100. keeping the a's in oakland is what's best for everyone, including las vegas. she also says her door is open to john fisher and anyone else who wants to purchase the a's and keep them here, and there is no word yet on whether the a's will play after, where the a's will play

after their lease is up in the coliseum, which is at the end of this upcoming season. and of course, that site in vegas won't be ready until 2020. yeah, there's still a long way to go between now and then, but it really was, you know, kind of shocking to hear the las vegas mayor say, no, no, no, no, no. >> the team probably should stay here in oakland. she said that there was something odd about about the deal in vegas. >> yes, she did. she said it doesn't make sense. >> okay. to be continued. all right. crystal bailey. thank you. all right. staying here in the east bay, governor newsom sending about 120 chp officers to oakland and the east bay as part of a crime crackdown. this new surge will help police in a city that saw 21% jump in violent crime last year. officers will help crack down on auto theft and retail crime and help provide high visibility traffic enforcement. oakland mayor shengtao told us earlier today on mornings on two that the city welcomes the patrols, working in partnership with opd. we're going need more support in our business districts, right? >> and so that's the fruitvale, that's, you know, in rock ridge, that's downtown, that's in the

laurel. and then we're going to need some traffic control and high, high presence and visibility in east oakland. and so it's 120 extra chp officers in the city of oakland. so that's going to be very helpful when we talk about combating crime. >> now some of the specifics of the chp deployment have not been released, including exactly where in oakland these officers would patrol and how long these officers will be in the city. now, the naacp says that mayor tao was not present at their meeting with the governor in january when they proposed adding more chp officers. the civil rights group, saying, quote, while the mayor is misleading the public and attempting to take credit for the increase, chp coming to oakland, she nor her staff were a part of the meeting with the governor, and she should be ashamed for trying to take credit for the work of the n naacp oakland branch. well, the group that's backing a recall of mayor shengtao also supports

this move. in a statement, it said, quote, this decision follows a meeting where community leaders presented the governor with well researched crime data, countering tao's misleading claims that crime is decreasing. town absence from this discussion reflects her mismanagement and accomplishment of making oakland a national embarrassment. authorities have now released the names of a man and woman who were found dead after shooting that wounded an alameda county sheriff's deputy, the deputy was trying to serve an eviction notice to the couple back on january 24th for failing to pay rent at a property there on dow avenue in union city. the two have been identified as 56 year old michael dorothy and 54 year old lizette chan. the deputy was shot in the arm and is recovering today. union city police say the couple died from gunshot wounds in a murder suicide. they did not release more details, saying that their investigation is ongoing. san francisco taking additional steps to ensure the city is safe and clean for visitors during the upcoming lunar new year

celebrations. mayor london breed police chief bill scott and other city leaders gathering today in chinatown to highlight some of the city's efforts. they say additional public works cleaning crews have been deployed in the neighborhood. they're out there. power washing and steam cleaning, sidewalks, streets and alleys, as well as sweeping up litter and removing graffiti. the police department plans to ramp up patrols in the area, and its focus is on keeping residents, visitors and especially seniors safe. >> we will arrest anyone who seeks to prey on our most vulnerable residents, particularly our elderly residents, because we know that's who is being preyed upon. this is unacceptable. this is truly the embodiment of community policing. >> all the grandmas, all the grandpa, all the kids. they know these officers by name. they know the families. liz. that is what makes chinatown so safe. >> now, over the next couple of weeks, officers will be handing out fliers on blessing scams targeting chinatown businesses.

residents and visitors. those are scams that they typically see increase this time of year. all right, now for an update on the ongoing issues from our latest storm and pga says it is still working to restore power to tens of thousands of homes and businesses following that big storm system over the weekend, according to the latest data from the utility. more than 52,000 bay area customers still in the dark. that includes nearly 25,000. in the north bay, nearly 12,000 on the peninsula and about 14,000 in the south bay. pga says that storm was the third biggest single day event in the utility's history. ktvu mark sayer today talking with people still feeling the impacts now, three days later. >> here at the intersection of minnesota and hicks in the city's willow glen neighborhood, the power went out around 4:00 on sunday afternoon. the dark traffic signals here tell the story. the power is still out at the 48 hour mark. residents say they are surprised. they are

still in this situation. >> well, it's, uh, it's been rather difficult lately because of the fact that we've actually been out of power since about 330 on sunday. >> adam martinez has been making phone calls from his car. >> it's been rather tedious when it comes to, uh, trying to manage heat, trying to manage, uh, hot water and things of that sort. so, yeah, a pretty difficult across the street, judy kane says she installed a powerwall and solar power last year for just such an eventuality, but she never expected the outage to last for this long. >> and all of her backups finally failed as well. it's hard. it's hard. >> and we have a powerwall, so we assume this would be resolved in a day or so. >> kane was trying to help her elderly parents by offering them the backup power that she did have, but due to the extended power outage, that strategy came to an end. >> and so they've been cold. um, i took them some thermoses of water. um, offered them the house, but today the house is cold, so my sister's taking them up to sunnyvale across town in

the city's alum rock neighborhood. >> pg and e is working to replace two power poles that came down in the high winds. this is one of more than 600 outage sites just in the south bay region. >> so that means it's a lot of jobs that we have to get to. we were prepared before the storm with crews locally available and ready to respond as soon as it was safe to do so. >> pg and e regional vice president teresa alvarado says she understands the frustration with the delays in getting power restored, and says the company has more than 3000 people working on the recovery operation. but replacing poles and lines is time consuming work. >> you'll see there are, uh, down poles, uh, trees that came down and took down poles and wire in people's backyards. those take quite a bit of time. a we have to remove the debris. we have to trim the trees. >> pg and e says it does make an effort to give all customers estimates as to when their power will be restored, but that is a manual process involving crews actually going to the outage sites to take a look at the work

receive a refund or deferrals for last sunday's race that was canceled due to the harsh weather conditions in stead, organizers offered runners a self-reporting virtual race. they say the race proceeds are given as charitable donations to local organizations. participants say they weren't notified of the cancellation until about 30 minutes before the race was set to begin. the uc berkeley central sierra snow lab says the sierra received nine more inches of snow in the last day, bringing snowfall totals to about 30.5in just in sunday. the lab posted this picture of a station they're in, so to springs covered in lots of fresh powder. the lab also found that statewide snow water equivalent increased by 23% in the last week. and that's really what we need, right? we need a couple of these storms, maybe

just not so close together. yeah. >> not so intense, right? yeah. but yeah, i was at the lab last november and it was just a few patches of snow walking around. so it's nice to see the changes in the sierra and you know, we need a break, which is nice today. but there's another system tomorrow. okay. thankfully, we're not talking about the bomb cyclones or atmospheric rivers. we're just talking about a normal system for us here. we can handle that. yeah, we can handle that for sure. take a look at the rainfall totals over the past week. and these numbers really adding up san rafael ben loman over an inch of rain over. i'm sorry, over eight inches of rain. san francisco nearly five inches. san jose about three and a half in concord, 1.91. so here's the satellite and the radar. still quite a bit of activity on the radar in southern california and also moving out toward arizona and portions of nevada for us, right now, our radar is fairly quiet. we have partly cloudy skies. but here's our next system coming on board for tomorrow morning rainfall. we're not talking about 5 to 8in, just a fraction of an inch. about a quarter of an inch to about three quarters of an inch. winds around 25 to 35 miles an hour. we do not have

any wind advisories or high wind warnings. and the sierra, they will pick up a winter weather advisory here is our live camera tonight, looking out toward the golden gate bridge, we'll check out some of the current numbers. definitely a cooler pattern setting up right now. santa rosa is 49, concord 53, san jose 53 degrees. rainfall should be developing tomorrow morning and definitely a cool start in the 30s to right around 40 degrees. so here is the system down in southern california right now. we're watching this front move in. so rain returns tomorrow morning. and then behind that front we'll have some cooler air and some scattered showers. and the possibility we could have an isolated thunderstorm. and also maybe some snow on some of the bay area peaks, especially around 3500 to 4000ft. so yeah, it's not a moat. some areas could have a little bit of a dusting of snow. we're thinking maybe about mount hamilton and also mount saint helena. but as far as the forecast, as you can see tomorrow morning, here we are, 8:00. things develop. this is ten and 11:00 tomorrow morning and then some off and on, scattered showers into your wednesday afternoon. so get ready. they get the umbrella

earlier today, i spoke with jill cook. she's the executive director of the american school counselor association and she says counselors have adapted over the years to address the ongoing needs of students. school counselors today work with all students in a school on academic development. >> career development, and social and emotional development. it's not the guidance counselor of old who may have just worked with a few students, was just about that college going preparation. today, we want to work with all students. >> and here is a look at another counselor making a difference hassan russell works at skyline high school in oakland. he says the thing that he loves most about his job is making a genuine connection with the students, and he routinely encourages them to trust yourself and believe in you. he says, he says when those two things align well, students can accomplish anything and again, hats off to you, hassan. for what you do. all right, san jose no longer offering virtual

five days away from kickoff boy, that excitement really building by the moment there in vegas. that's such a cool venue too. all right, a new map shows most of the country is rooting for the niners to win the super bowl. this is from bet online. they went through tweets by location using fan hashtags like go niners or chiefs kingdom. and they found that 37 states are rooting for our niners, 13 are rooting for the chiefs. the same map was done back in 2020, when these two teams met for the big game. at that time, well, most of the country was rooting for the chiefs, but times have changed. as you can see here. all right. we're already getting a look at some of the ads that everyone will be talking about during the big game. i want you to take a look now at this mullet fueled spot for kawasaki, promoting the company's new line of off road vehicles. the ad tied into a giveaway with great clips offering 15,000 football fans a free mullet haircut. and would you believe those free haircuts were gone within hours today? guess you're going to see more mullets out there. it used
