evening everyone. i'm heather holmes. now the issue has escalated to a lawsuit. ktvu crystal bailey joins us now after going to berkeley today to learn more about how this happened. crystal. >> well, heather, i spoke to a disabled elderly woman who says she's been forced to wait outside for her mail or find a way to travel to the post office . it's been a frustration for her and her neighbors for more than 150 days and counting, she says. he's taken up the issue all the way up to dc. jane stillwater lives at a rent controlled apartment building on milvia street in berkeley. she's 81 years old, lives on a fixed income, and is disabled. so when her mail stopped coming back in august, it was more than an inconvenience to pick it up at the mail substation three miles from home. >> we're not exactly mobile. it's just been really difficult, you know, not being able to get your mail and have to rely on somebody else to take you to the post office. >> if you can't get there yourself. >> now, the reason the mail

carrier cannot leave the mail in the mailboxes is because this master lock was broken, leaving all 12 of these mailboxes exposed. for anyone who might want to steal their mail. it's a lock. the u.s. postal service is responsible for replacing. in september, stillwater says usps told her they only had one technician to install all broken or missing master locks from vallejo all the way down to hayward. >> that's a freaking lot of people. that's a freaking lot of mailboxes. but they assured me that i was on their list. >> days turned into weeks, and weeks turned into months. still water says she reached out to the usps office of inspector general in dc and congresswoman barbara lee, who responded saying they were working on it. and in the meantime, she kept trying to catch the mail carrier in person to collect her mail. >> i was like, standing on the corner in the rain with my umbrella, looking for the mail carrier for last month, she says usps called her and let her know a new lock was coming and would

be installed within seven days, but that was more than two weeks ago. >> finally, out of desperation, i called channel two. you guys, within a half an hour. boom. within a half an hour, the lock was installed. so i was happy. >> and it's not over, she says her mail carrier told her he did not have a key to unlock the new master lock. >> what? you don't have the key. >> you got the lock and you bet you don't have the key. >> stillwater filed a complaint this week, citing damages for the five months she was forced to travel to the post office or stand on the curb and a spokesperson from usps told me residents can expect mail delivery to start again tomorrow. they say they do not know how or why the original lock was damaged. in general, when mail delivery is disrupted, usps says they work to resolve the issues as quickly as possible. crystal bailey, ktvu, fox two news crystal, thank you. >> governor newsom says enough is enough. and today, offering even more help to alameda county and the city of oakland in its

ongoing battle to fight crime, newsom announced that he is sending attorneys from the california department of justice and the national guard to the bay area. the move is meant to help alameda county district attorney pamela price in prosecuting violent crimes and serious drug related and property crimes, as the governor made a stop in oakland today and told ktvu the goal isn't to point fingers, but to solve problems. you smash and grab, you put a gun to someone's head. >> you need to be held to account. period. full stop. i'm not going to sugarcoat that. that's not a job. it's not a career. it's completely inappropriate. people are scared to death. >> newsom pointed to statistics from oakland last year showing that violent crime is up 21. robbery rose 38% in vehicle theft increased 45, all while other parts of the state actually have seen decrease in certain crimes. no word yet on how long the help is scheduled to stay in alameda county, but the governor says they need to see results and a dent put into some of these issues. san

francisco mayor london breed is joining a republican led campaign to overhaul the statewide proposition 47. now, voters passed that measure ten years ago. it makes property crimes under $950, a misdemeanor. instead of a felony. supporters aim to reduce the prison population and save taxpayer money by diverting people with low level convictions from prison into programs, but critics say the law has emboldened thieves and fueled the fentanyl crisis. breed and other city leaders today added their names to the homelessness, drug addiction and theft reduction act to make changes to prop 47. breed says that this measure will make a meaningful difference in san francisco and other cities across the state. san jose mayor matt mehan also backing reforms to prop 47. he says the measure was not perfect and has had significant unintended consequences. >> i like mayor london breed and hundreds of thousands of californians am signing the petition to put this important

measure on the november 2024 ballot and return on common sense to our criminal justice system, mayor mehan today said. >> prop 47 is hurting families and businesses across the state, and that reforming the measure will help hold repeat offenders accountable. another bid to rein in artificial intelligence moving through the state senate, san francisco state senator scott wiener today introduce passing a bill that would require the most powerful a.i. companies to test their models for safety before releasing them to the public. senate bill 1047 also protects whistleblowers at those companies and aims to curb competitive behavior among a.i. makers. wiener's plan would also authorize the creation of a large public cloud computing cluster, meant to provide researchers with a platform for developing ai technology. the senator scott wiener, writing on x today that he's proud that san francisco is the epicenter of the recent incredible advances in ai, saying that this

technology is already being used to discover new medicines, develop clean energy, and enhance creativity and we've only scratched the surface surface of what's possible, he said. all right, the apple store in berkeley was hit by thieves for the second time this week. the latest incident, happening around 1215. just this afternoon . police say two people walked into the store and stole 16 iphones, six ipads and four macbook s, the same store was hit just yesterday morning. police say they arrested two suspects in yesterday's case as well. the man seen in this now viral video. in fact, we showed it to you right here on the news at 730 last night. he was caught stealing iphones from the apple store in emeryville this week. well, this gentleman has been arrested. police say that 22 year old tyler mims is facing a variety of burglary charges. as the incident happened at the store on bay street on tuesday. police say that they believe mims is also involved in other apple store thefts. all right, happening now. stanford university announcing plans to evict students from a tent

just named to the pro football hall of fame class of 2024. in a statement, the team said willis has cemented his legacy as one of the greatest linebackers in nfl history. willis was selected by the san francisco 49ers 11 overall in the 2007 nfl draft. he spent the entirety of his eight year career with the niners. congratulations to him as well. okay, now to our weather. and we saw some sunny skies today. but you can also see a little bit of snow lingering there on one south bay peak sky fox brought us this video over mount hamilton, and you can see snow covering some of the hillsides. it was certainly a chilly morning throughout the bay area and is going to be a chilly night. let's talk with mark about all of that and what we can expect as we head into the weekend. >> yeah, definitely that blast of cold air moving in. heather. and yeah, we're talking about a frost advisory once again tomorrow morning. so the key headlines bundle bundle up first thing. get the kiddos ready tomorrow morning. the big guy coats and the sweaters because yeah, you're going to need it. yeah. lots of 30s and even some

40s out there. so take a look at the frost advisory. in fact, this has been expanded compared to this morning for the north bay valleys, the inland valleys, the santa clara valley, especially out toward morgan hill and gilroy and also santa cruz county as well. so temperatures will be in the 30s. and what's interesting is, is there's the chance we could have maybe some more frost advisories continue into the weekend. so yeah, the cold air it wants to stick around. here's the satellite and the radars. you can pick out. not a lot of rainfall to track today as we're coming closer to the bay area with a few scattered showers down in the southern half of the state, and also here in the bay area. a few pop up showers throughout the afternoon hours. we're expecting that chance, but thankfully not a widespread rain event for us and things are already drying out for tonight. we'll check out some of the cold numbers right now for the 7:00 hour. fairfield 43 degrees santa rosa 49, san francisco. checking in 50 and san jose in the lower 50s. here is our live camera. we are checking out the bay bridge right now where we have overall partly cloudy skies across a good portion of the bay area and definitely want to bundle up with these chilly temperatures. first thing tomorrow morning.

30s and some 40s. so definitely that chill in the air. and for the afternoon hours, we're just thinking some 50s for afternoon highs. so here's what's happening as we step back. step back and show you show you the overall weather pattern. this area of low pressure producing some rain and some snow showers out toward portions of arizona. this triggered some instability for us to produce those clouds, and also a few isolated showers out there. this system is kind of moving out, but that cold air remains in place. so cold start tomorrow morning. partly sunny into the afternoon hours and then offshore. we have this big shot here developing so this area of high pressure will push the storm track to our north. and we should we will have a dry weekend. here's the forecast model as you can see into your friday. some clouds to start things off, but then more sunshine into the afternoon hours. and then on saturday as we start off the weekend, we're looking pretty good. on sunday we could bring in a few extra clouds. we'll kind of call it partly cloudy for the second half of the weekend. temperatures not moving around too much. lots of 50s for afternoon highs for tomorrow with partly sunny skies. here's

it sees the heaviest traffic. >> the permit is also for a time limited pilot program that will end in less than two years from now, and any continuation of the program beyond that time would require a new permit. now the group that appealed the car-free pilot program now plans to take the case to the coast commission . >> that's expected next. also new at 730 tonight, a new addition to the san mateo county sheriff's office. two therapy canines were welcomed to the department today as part of an initiative that began last december. deputies say the dogs will help comfort people in crisis and foster positive interactions between law enforcement and the community. the dogs are really cute to. all right, the african american art and culture complex in san francisco, celebrating a series dedicated to black culture and creativity. it's been hosting monthly arts presentations in its season of black art series with a final installment called the black art symposium, which is set for saturday. earlier today on the for, i spoke with rodney earl jackson jr. he's director at season of black art.
