beach. >> the 11:00 news on ktvu. fox two starts now, and a joyride takes a wild turn on the peninsula. good evening, everyone. >> i'm mike mibach, and i'm julie julie haener. the man who stole that small plane has now been arrested. new at 11, the san mateo county sheriff's office says this all started in palo alto. deputies say a man took a small plane from an airport before crash landing in the sand. around 5:00 tonight, just south of poplar beach in half moon bay. someone reportedly witnessed that plane go down and saw a man walking away from the scene. the plane was left nose down in the sand. the federal aviation administration says the aircraft, which was a single engine american champion citabria 150, the faa says the pilot was the only person on board. deputy has described how they were able to catch him some time later, a male subject was located, uh, near the beach and

matching the description provided to us of the person walking away from the airplane. >> he was detained and has since been, uh, been placed under arrest. so i've been doing this for almost 20 years, and this is a first for me. >> the man accused of stealing that plane has been identified as 50 year old luis arias from miami, florida. he is now in the san mateo county jail. palo alto police are now working on how to recover that plane. >> and now to the excitement brewing for super bowl 58. the family of one of the 49ers who grew up in the east bay is packing up, getting ready to go to the big game. ktvu is amber lee with us here in studio. after speaking to the father of offensive lineman aaron banks about his journey from high school athlete to the nfl, amber. mike i met with aaron banks father in hayward, where the football player grew up. >> there is nervous excitement at his son is about to play in the super bowl while representing the hometown team. i'm bringing binoculars, of course, lamont banks senior is the father of 40 niners offensive lineman aaron banks

and east bay native i make sure i see aaron and the good place so this is this is what's man datory mandatory while he's attending the super bowl at allegiant stadium. watching aaron closely along with the rest of the family. >> proud of my son, you know, um , excited and eager. >> eager to see aaron play on football's biggest stage, the super bowl and win. dad tells me his son played basketball at el cerrito high school and displayed an agility. even at six feet, six inches tall and 330 pounds, i see someone that i think will do well in. >> many think whatever he does, bank says, that nimbleness makes the 26 year old great at protecting the quarterback. >> aaron's nickname when he played college football at notre dame was dancing bear. >> aaron. yeah >> in 2021, when aaron was drafted by the 49ers bank, says he was thrilled to have his son play for a bay area team. dad

reflect aaron's journey as an athlete. since high school, and now they're hoping to add a super bowl win to his many accomplishments. the family leaves for las vegas tomorrow morning. mike >> no matter what, win or lose, hopefully he gets to wear that ring down the road here. all right amber thank you. it was a big night for the 40 niners all around running back christian mccaffrey was named the ap offensive player of the year in the nfl. stanford football took the time to recognize the running back who won the pac 12 offensive player of the year while playing for the cardinal in 2015. here in the bay area, law enforcement is working to keep people safe. >> during sunday's game, san francisco police say people who may be traveling into the city that day should expect some road closures and changes to muni service officers say there will be traffic closures in the mission district and muni busses will be rerouted in some areas around the city sunday, the chp will also close some freeway off ramps in san francisco. regardless of sunday's outcome. san francisco police say they will not tolerate violence,

property destruction or other criminal activity. well, the two teams have locked down there after party locations in las vegas. >> if their team wins, tmz reporting. if the 40 niners take home the lombardi, their bash will be at omnia nightclub, located inside caesars palace. this is right in the center of the vegas strip. the kansas city chiefs chose a nightclub inside resorts world and security will be tight. we've learned that the las vegas metro police are going to be very, very close. >> they're going to be on scene at both of those nightclubs, as well as the fbi, which is really interesting because i mean, as you can as you can see, the security threat is massive because las vegas alone is such, such a prominent place. and this is going to be having so many celebrities. and i mean, including taylor swift, taylor swift might be out partying and i'm sure she will be with travis kelce that night. as for music, tmz told is told that the chainsmokers will be performing at the chiefs party since they

have a long standing relationship with patrick mahomes from the chiefs. >> and we do have coverage from las vegas really throughout this super bowl week, joe fonzi cristina rendon showing us all of the action ahead of the big game on sunday. tomorrow we do have a fox two sports special quest for six. it airs at 930 in the morning. then on super bowl sunday, we have the quest for six live in las vegas that airs at nine in the morning and at noon just before hours before kickoff. we will be airing the quest for six countdown to kick off new at 11 tonight. >> san francisco is planning to open a sober living facility completely funded by the city. the chronicle reports the proposed location is keay street at nor beach hotel. funding for the centeis expected to cost about $3.7 million per year. for the purchase of that building has not been finalized, and the city has until next month to get community feedback for more than 100 days, stanford students have hosted a sit in in support of

either israel or the people of gaza. >> now, stanford university university now says those student protesters can no longer camp out overnight. all students must now vacate the space by eight in the evening. every day they're there. but as ktvu lamonica peters reports, dozens of students remain there tonight in protest. >> supporters of the palestinian cause at stanford held a rally thursday night in white plaza. despite the university's announcement. administrators say students are no longer allowed to remain in white plaza with tents and other camping items. after 8 p.m, they can return at 8 a.m. each day. sleeping out here every single day, whether it rains, whether it's cold, is minute compared to what our brothers and sisters across the globe are experiencing, stanford says. the pro-israel blue and white groups tent was damaged during last week's storms. there in other students prevented them from reestablishing their tent by placing their own chairs in

the space. the university says those actions prompted enforcement of the policy for all students. we intend to abide by that 100. >> um, the other side where, you know, there's hundreds of students out here right now, i don't think that they're going to abide by that. we're going to see what the administration does. >> stanford's policy says camping or staying outside overnight on university property is not permitted without university permission, with no sign of students leaving white plaza and no campus authority asking them to leave. on thursday night, protesters say they'll continue their fight. we are going to continue to be here until our demands are met. >> we are going to continue to be here until stanford demands a cease fire. now the university also said in a statement that it's concerned about students being out here after those storms last week. >> they say any student that violates the no camping policy may face disciplinary action or be cited for trespassing, but so far, no one has been asked to

to arizona, and it's shutting down several major roads. >> this story beginning tonight's west coast rap. reports say parts of interstate 40 and 17 have been forced to close as arizona's winter storm is part of that same system that pummeled california earlier in the week. one trucker pulled out over, i should say, in belmont, arizona, just before part of the highway shut down. >> it's pretty brutal, actually. uh, about 40 miles east of here. it was nice. nice and sunny, 47 degrees. now all of a sudden it's 20 degrees and five inches of snow. welcome to arizona. and in phenix, more than 100 flights

were delayed due to the weather and the first round of the pga's waste management golf tournament in scottsdale also delayed. >> in southern california, the los angeles lakers are adding a special tribute to the outside of their arena. today. the team unveiled a statue honoring the late kobe bryant. the big reveal happened right outside crypto.com arena, formerly known as staples center. the date of the event is significant because it represents both jersey numbers bryant wore during his career. the eight and 24 and his daughter gigi, who wore number two. kobe has so many people that have supported him all over the world from the very beginning and this moment isn't just for kobe, but it's for all of you that have been rooting for him all of these years. bryant won five nba titles during his 20 year career with the los angeles lakers. he also

outages from this week's storm. >> for some, today marked the fifth day without electricity. that's right. >> here are the latest numbers from pg and e. more than 8500 customers in the dark right now. a bulk of those outages in the north bay, with more than 6000 ktvu zac sos was in lagunitas in marin county and spoke with people who are still waiting to turn those lights on. >> nothing's been done on the road until now. >> crews finally beginning the work of removing a massive tree that came down across susan steiner's road in lagunitas, knocking out electricity to the neighborhood. since sunday. >> i think the hardest part is that we really don't know when the power is going to come back. we don't have hot water in terms of outages. >> pg and e calling the damage from this weekend's storm the third worst, it's responded to in its service area. most here understanding about the backlog but frustrated with the utility provider over what they described as a lack of communication. >> pg and e they don't

communicate well. >> like i just got a message today that there was a power out and that wasn't very much of an update. >> tim grimmer, relying on a small backup generator at home, but nothing that's going to back up the fridge and the freezer and that kind of stuff. so he's been making multiple trips to the store for ice and learning how to cook real fast and eat real fast and minimize the waste up the road. in nicasio, the third one that way is broken off and fell down. brian dolcini, who owns clover dairy, also without power since sunday, pointing to the area where the utility poles came down over the hill. the winds that day, they clocked them at 102 coming across the dam inside his metal barn at the time, and it was blowing me around inside the barn. >> it was crazy. >> his brother's roof partially ripped off. he's tarped, but the inside of the house is got a new, new sheetrock and stuff like that.

while. we've been pretty wet for a while. ridge of high pressure here. and that's kind of the story. it's all, you know, you can kind of see it going up and over, but it's a strong ridge. and so when the model, when you push the model through the long range model, which we did earlier, i don't know if you saw that during ten, but the ridge kind of stays put into next week, which would indicate dry, dry conditions or relatively dry conditions. so the right now temperatures pretty chilly. you can see 40 degrees in napa. look at san francisco. it's 4747 in san jose. so the frost advisory will certainly verify. and again walnut creek is not is in a frost advisory. pardon me. so they'll they'll see frost there. concord will see frost livermore and then hayward's not in a frost advisory. but if you're just in a nook and cranny in hayward out there by the on by the reservoir somewhere in a wind sheltered valley, you could easily see some frost. so the forecast overnight lows above freezing. but just barely. and then the next few mornings are going to look like this. so kind of chilly. then the forecast highs 50s mid and low 50s 58 in san jose, 55 in morgan hill,

54in antioch. and then the five day forecast because we can do it right there. it's dry which is great. there's your saturday and sunday and it does look dry right through the bay area week next week. there's maybe something coming in thursday late into friday, so that could all change. but in the meantime, enjoy your weekend. pretty pretty nice weekend. nice dry run of weather for us. but cold in the mornings. >> all right. have a good weekend to bill. thank you. new at 11 efforts to help you get better prepared for the next big storm. possibly late next week. as bill just mentioned, san mateo county has emergency kits available. you can find them at four library located in east palo alto, foster city, half moon bay, and redwood city. pg and e provided the kits, which do include a blanket, a power bank, water, and a snack. a central coast organization says it's having to rescue wildlife after the recent storm. right now, spca for monterey county says it's helping seabirds that are emaciated and hypothermic and wet. the spca asks that if

deluge on bethel island apparently caused a gigantic section of a marina floating boathouse from the closed anchor marina to break loose and break up. >> one section is 300ft long, the other up to 200ft. the winds were i'm telling you, gusts 5060 miles an hour and i was like paul revere running down the levee, going the docks are coming, the docks are coming. neighbor ray walton said even though it's often windy here, this was different. it was gusting. >> so you could you could barely stand up. >> it's very dangerous and very scary. there's nothing you could do. it was massive. >> the wind driven docks sped down the slough, doing serious damage to as many as ten homeowner boat moorings and slamming into the adjacent levee on jersey island. since then, changing winds and currents have caused the huge breakaway docks to go up and down taylor slough, doing even more damage. >> at one point, there might have been, uh, eight, ten, 15

people all down here trying to figure out what to do about it. >> the very temporary solution at least tie down the big section with the help of a knowledgeable friend. >> he started with his rope tying it up at different locations. the idea was that we didn't want it to move away. >> there's two more docks sitting over there ready to come out in the next storm. >> neighbors say that anchor marina has been a rodent infested eyesore, a garbage pit and a fire hazard with a longtime squatters camp to boot. >> place has been neglected for years, and the county shut it down this has been a problem. >> you can anchor marina. you had nothing but police reports over there and no electricity, no sewage and no water. >> fact of the matter is, whatever needs to be done needs to be done sooner than later. why? because we have almost three more months of the rainy season and big storms, possibly coming up. tom vacar ktvu, fox

two news well, a new addition to the san mateo county sheriff's office. >> two therapy canines were welcomed to the department today . they're part of an initiative that began in december of last year. deputies say the dogs will help comfort people in crisis and foster positive interactions between san mateo county sheriff's deputies and the community well to markets. >> 20th year the new york arab-american comedy festival is coming to san francisco on saturday, and we heard from the co-founder about why this festival was created. >> it was about battling those negative stereotypes, but also reminding hollywood that incredible talent in this community exists and the headliners that you're going to see on saturday night, you could never get all these comedians on one show if we weren't a family that had been doing this for 20 years, the palace of fine arts is hosting saturday's show. >> you can buy tickets online right now at arab comedy.com.

san francisco indie fest is underway today. the festival celebrating independent films kicked off at the roxy theater. organizers say this year's festival includes 55 shorts and 35 features from 15 countries, 34 of the films were made by residents here in the bay area. this is the 26th annual festival. the event runs through sunday the 18th, a trifecta of events is leading to a bump in business at the historic san francisco flower market. >> the valentine's day season is typically already a busy one for retailers at the south of market venue, but with the 49ers in the super bowl and the lunar new year also this weekend, the flower mart says many people are looking for bright and colorful arrangements to enhance their parties and gatherings. >> i think it just lends itself to an opportunity to decorate your house with something fresh and beautiful and a red and gold works. we've got a lot of it. >> the flower mart also says retailers are anticipating
