the people. so definitely a lot of prep goes in other restaurants such as straits in santana row are planning special super bowl menu items and a few doors down from the restaurants, a pop up store that's only been open seven days when san francisco won, we had the choice between kansas city and san francisco, so we chose here, manager eric schmidt says. >> merchandise currently sold out at other retailers is here and waiting. the store's normal operating hours extended from now through super bowl sunday. >> we'll sell probably be 2 to 3 times as much as we would during christmas season. >> in addition to brick and mortar stores, sidewalk vendors are prepping for super bowl sunday. two t shirts and hoodies of deebo samuel and brock purdy are lined up for the crowds ahead of kickoff. >> i'm on the main corner and, uh, they know i'm a little cheaper than the stores and i believe i stadium has a merchandise been selling. >> oh, yeah. yes >> we have anything niner is,

uh, the gold rush is on, and if you don't have plans for sunday, you may want to call ahead. >> many restaurants here in the south bay say they are completely sold out. some are offering bar seating, others standing room only. santana row in san jose, jesse gary, ktvu, fox two news, and now we go to san francisco tonight where city leaders there urging 49ers fans to have safe super bowl celebrations. >> mayor london breed police chief bill scott and fire chief janine nicholson, as well as sheriff paul miyamoto, leading a super bowl rally today in the city's east cut neighborhood. they were at the crossing at east cut on main street for a super bowl event. it will be the site of one of the big super bowl watch parties around the city. on sunday, mayor breed says fans should celebrate this weekend and that police and firefighters will be there to try to keep people safe. we don't want all that craziness. >> we don't want to be breaking people's windows and carrying on. we don't want to take a

>> diehard san francisco, 40 niners fans celebrating at a specially decorated sfo gate before catching a united airlines flight to las vegas friday afternoon, decked out in red and gold, got the five patches looking forward to starting another row right over here with the six patch. >> hopefully monday morning. >> he's hoping super bowl ticket prices will drop to $4,000. otherwise he'll be at a casino watch party. and that's where most of the fans we caught up with will be rooting on their team. >> we're all pumped and stoked. it's going to be a great trip. >> a group of guys from the bay area booked their trip a year ago, way before anyone even knew who would be playing. >> there will be more 40 niners fans there than chiefs fans, i would believe, since it's closer to the west coast. i think we'll dominate, dominate on the field and off the field. >> only the lucky few on this flight scored tickets to the game. tom evigan is one of the chosen ones and for him, niners football is a family tradition.

give the niners a run for their money in san francisco international airport. joey horne, ktvu, fox two news ready for the super bowl? >> yeah, also heading to vegas. >> members of the 40 niners staff, the organization posting this video to social media. the 40 niners flying out more than 800 full time employees, interns , family and friends. a lot of them on that plane today for super bowl 58. niners staff and fans have been making their way to sin city, but not everyone had to travel so far. ktvu cristina rendon has more now from the niners fans who call vegas home. >> it is one of the biggest niners bars out here at joey's tavern in northwest las vegas. on any given day, we have 200 and to 300 people here in this bar. >> susan and gaston larsen head up a local chapter of niners fans called the north vegas faithfuls. >> you know, we try to make everything fun and keep it family because that's the main

moon bay, the san mateo county sheriff's office arrested 50 year old luis erice minutes after he crashed that plane on a beach. emergency crews found the stolen aircraft intact. nose down in the sand. police say they believe the plane was stolen from an airport in palo alto. the san mateo county sheriff's office is still investigating the theft. erice was not hurt. >> fast food workers in california are forming a union with a unique structure. and as ktvu ann rubin explains, it comes at a time when big chains are taking a hard look at wages and menu pricing for the coming year. >> historic. that's how organized ears describe the inaugural gathering of the california fast food workers union, comprised of cooks and cashiers. statewide, the union is the first of its kind in the nation. ramona martinez of san jose was at the meeting in la. she's been a cook at carl's junior for 17 years and spoke with us through a translator. >> it was very exciting to see

the room full of other fast food workers who are ready to start this union with me. >> the union comes at a time when fast food wages and pricing are top of mind in california. a $20 minimum wage takes effect in april, and backlash to meal price increases has caused viral anger online. alexander dean is still reeling over a recent mcdonalds purchase. >> it was like 45 or 50 bucks or something like that for two meals, and one of them was kids meal. and it's not just mcdonald's to like even every every restaurant is skyrocketing. it's kind of it's ridiculous. >> this week, mcdonald's ceo acknowledged aged customer's frustration, saying. it translated to a disappointing fourth quarter and lower spending by customers who earn $45,000 a year or less. he said the company will now shift its focus to affordability. >> it's been like kind of draining me, like easily 20 bucks each time. for one thing, you know? and i just find it a little like insulting because people work really hard for their money. >> i'm worried. i am absolutely

worried about how much money will i have left by the summertime. >> customers say something needs to change or they'll just start eating at home. >> people i notice are starting to pack more lunches from home now, but as the industry makes adjustments, workers hope the union will protect their interests. >> ramona martinez says she spent the day learning about her rights. >> i'm very happy and excited for what the future holds for us fast food workers who unite will be able to move forward with everything that we need and our jobs, and this is just day one. >> the union, which will be part of seiu, is a nontraditional one. it will have a formal structure, benefits and dues, but it will be missing some of the protections of federal labor laws in san jose. andrew rubin, ktvu, fox two news well, as we approach the lunar new year, san francisco police are warning about blessing scams. >> chief bill scott says police are looking for three people accused of taking hundreds of thousands of dollars in cash and jewelry from elderly victims.

one victim told police they were approached by the suspects at a bus stop. the other was walking in the outer mission district, but she was approached by a man and two women who began speaking about evil spirits that will harm the victim and her family. >> the suspects told the victims that they needed to bless her valuables, and had her put cash and jewelry into a bag to perform a blessing ceremony. the victim only later realized that all of her belongings were taken . >> the suspects in both cases are a man and two women. the chief says they're middle aged and wearing masks that partially cover their faces. police say if you are a victim of a blessing scam to make sure and give police a call, king tides are expected on bay area beaches and there's a new call for state funding for projects to reduce the increase threat of flooding. >> state assembly members diane papin and damon connolly joined other elected officials and the group save the bay this morning along the bay shoreline in east palo alto. they're calling for

more flood resilience funding in the bay area. they say they there are unfunded flood adaptation projects, and that the need for a statewide climate bond is urgent. >> san mateo county is the most exposed county in the state to sea level rise. our county is uniquely impacted by climate change and will need adaptive infrastructure more than any other county in california. we are highly susceptible to flooding of all kinds, and we do not have the infrastructure to cope with this increasing powerful and frequent storms, nor the rising seas. >> the assembly member also says the need is urgent in san mateo county because it has 53 miles of coastline on the bay and 58 miles of coastline along the pacific ocean and the next big high tide will be tomorrow morning out toward the golden gate bridge, right around just after the 11:00 hour. >> so you'll likely see some minor flooding near the bay shoreline once again for tomorrow. as we get another round of the king tides. here's a satellite and the radars. you

can see it's fairly quiet over the bay area. we're watching the weather closely out toward southern nevada as we come in closer to two las vegas. lots of clouds in place and even a few showers nearby. so there's the possibility of a few showers this evening. here is the plan right now. in fact, mostly cloudy skies tomorrow for the super bowl coverage of the live shot. you'll probably be hearing people talking about the wind. we could have winds around 25 to maybe 30 miles an hour, but lots of sunshine for tomorrow and for the big game on sunday. we are expecting mostly sunny skies and temperatures in the 50s. back here in the bay area this weekend, as we get ready for the super bowl, we are expecting a cold start tomorrow morning. lots of sunshine tomorrow afternoon. on sunday we'll start off with some cloud cover and then partly sunny skies into the afternoon hours. so as you can see the satellite and the radar. just some visiting clouds out there and current numbers. it's been a frigid weather pattern out there. current numbers santa rosa 53 degrees. you can see oakland 50 and san jose checking in 54. here's our live camera. it's beautiful tonight as you can see, the scattered high clouds kind of adding a neat

nevada. all the marines were in their 20s and based in san diego with the third marine aircraft wing called the flying tigers. the exact cause of the crash is still under investigation. >> a georgia state senate committee held its first meeting today investigating the district attorney, who's prosecuting a criminal case against former president trump. fulton da fani willis filed charges against mister trump and others for their alleged efforts to overturn the 2020 election results. several defense are seeking to dismiss the case after allegations emerged that willis had an intimate relationship with a special prosecutor that she hired. they claim that nathan wade used money from his earnings to pay for their vacations, to pay for vacations for the pair. >> this is not any type of political witch hunt. this is a quest for the truth. you lose the confidence of the public in the fairness of our criminal justice system. if they think prosect actors are engaging in prosecution so that their lovers can get rich.

>> nathan wade has said that the relationship didn't begin until after he was hired. georgia lawmakers have said the committee will not interfere with the ongoing criminal probe commission, and it does not have the power to remove willis. >> federal authorities are banning scam robocalls made with artificial intelligence. this comes after a high profile call mimicked president joe biden's voice before the new hampshire primary. fox's connor hansen has the details. voters in new hampshire received a robo call right before they headed to the polls. >> we'll need your help in electing democrats up and down the ticket. >> president biden's voice mimicked using artificial intelligence, once told them not to vote in the primary. >> that call was indeed a fake. >> we want to do as much as we can to give people comfort that we're not only on top of this, but we're holding people accountable. who who might try this? >> the federal communications commission traced the robo calls to a texas based company, life corporation, and this week, the fcc voted to make it illegal to

use artificial intelligence to make those kinds of calls, letting the agency find the caller. in a statement, the agency said, quote, bad actors are using ai generated voices in unsolicited robo calls to extort vulnerable family members, imitate celebrities, and misinform voters. the fcc says unwanted calls and robo calls are its largest source of consumer complaints, with tens of billions dialed each year. the unwanted robo calls aren't just a nuisance. they can threaten public safety by disrupting 911 call centers. congress has cracked down on robo calls in the past, saying they defraud americans out of billions of dollars. the fcc says it's also looking into using ai for good, tracing the source of those unwanted calls in new york, connor hansen, fox news. >> another stock market record

falling in new york as the s&p 500 closed at a new high. it finished above the 5000 mark for the first time. it is the 10th record in less than a month for the index. as stocks continue their climb. the dow, though, slipped 54 points. the nasdaq jumped 196 and the s&p was up 28 for that record close. shares have rallied on hopes by investors that the federal reserve will soon start cutting interest rates, but tech companies including nvidia, microsoft and amazon were all higher today. coming up on ktvu news at 630, thieves break into a pg and e utility truck with workers inside and at the utility's headquarters and new charges filed against the man accused of killing former police officer and security guard kevin nishida. what prompted alameda county's district attorney to take the action and our super bowl coverage continues. >> we hear from george kittle's father about what keeps him so energized on the field

super bowl niner fans decked out in red and gold packed bay area airports today. some airlines even jumped in on the celebrations at sfo. alaska airlines hosted a brock purdy party on flight 13 that was in honor of purdy's number. >> bay area businesses are prepping for the swarms of niner fans going out to watch the game. many are extending their hours and increasing food and alcohol orders with suppliers.

some restaurants are also marking the occasion with special super bowl themed menu items. >> yeah, everybody getting in on the action. san francisco city leaders also urging fans to have safe super bowl celebrations. mayor breed, police chief bill scott, sheriff paul miyamoto and several say that extra officers, sheriff's deputies and the chp will all be out in force on sunday. post game celebratory fires, vandalism or driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs not going to be tolerated. you're watching ktvu, fox two news at 630. >> a group of pga workers fell victim to a thief who broke into their car with them inside. >> this all took place right at the utility's headquarters in downtown oakland. our crime reporter, henry lee. has a look now at what happened. >> a car load of pga workers targeted by thieves as they arrived at their headquarters building on the edge of oakland's lake merritt. >> that sucks, because you can't even go to work like you can't even, like, feel safe. >> it happened as two workers in an unmarked car were pulling into this garage near 21st and

harrison at about 10:00 thursday morning. a second car pulled up behind the workers and passenger , got out and then broke one of their car windows and stole property. the victims were heading to work at pga headquarters at kaiser center on lakeside drive, a familiar part of oakland skyline. jenny valera , walking past the building for work, had mixed reaction. >> at the same time. like it's the bay area, it is what it is. you just have to be vigilant as possible. but if this is their new facility, the proper security needs to be taken. >> ktvu has learned the victims were preparing to use a company badge to get access to the parking garage. when the thieves pulled up behind them, they assumed it was another employee's car in a statement, pga said the safety of our coworkers and contractors is one of puccini's most important responsibilities. pga is aware of an incident where three employees were the victims of a vehicle robbery and were assisting oakland police department in their investigation. this comes as ktvu firstrillioneported. two weeks ago, kaiser permanente telling his workers downtown to stay in their offices for work

and lunch. other companies also providing security to accompany employees at pga. there was heavy security around the building on friday, with the usual contingent of security, as well as an armed guard who normally travels with pga crews in the field in oakland. that's in response to utility workers being robbed on the street where things are going. >> it's just getting worse and worse every day. and um, people don't want to work themselves and take from others. it's easier way for them. and there's just too much of it going on. >> i think this area has definitely seen an uptick in crime, and you know, it shouldn't happen to anyone. >> oakland police are investigating this latest downtown incident. anyone with information is asked to give them a call in oakland. henry lee ktvu, fox two news. new developments today in the case of kevin nishida, the tv crew security guard who was shot and killed in oakland in 2021. >> alameda county district attorney pamela price filed a new set of charges against three men accused of killing nishida, who was a former police officer.

prosecutors now say lauren gilbert was the gunman who opened fire in downtown oakland. gilbert was at large for about two years until his arrest in missouri last month. previously, the da's office had said. shadia mitchell was the shooter. gilbert mitchell and a third man, hershel hale, have already been charged with murder. but price said she's adding gang and gun enhancements. price says the men face decades in prison if convicted, but the d.a. removed special circumstances against the three men, meaning they no longer face life in prison without parole. >> all these charges are consistent with the actual evidence in the case. the previous prosecutors who charged the case under my predecessor made certain mistakes about who was responsible for the murder of kevin nishida and failed to include some charges that we deemed appropriate. >> i want life in prison without parole. kevin doesn't get parole. he doesn't get to come home. kevin doesn't get to have

75th nato summit this summer, and talk about the negotiations toward a release of hostages held by hamas and boosting humanitarian aid in gaza. >> israel is pushing ahead with its southern gaza offensive and says it's working to evacuate more than a million palestinian from the city of rafah on the border with egypt. as fox's mike tobin tells us, most of the people there have already been displaced, and aid workers say they have nowhere else to go. >> as the israeli military turns its attention south, new plans are in the works to minimize civilian casualties. on friday, prime minister benjamin netanyahu ordered his commanders to prepare to evacuate civilians from the city of rafah on the egyptian border. almost a million and a half palestinians have fled there since the fighting started, and some say the planned evacuation ahead of an expected israeli offensive shows the idf is making more of an effort to avoid collateral damage. >> they have become more precise in their targeting. they are

all across the country. >> this is the absolute worst epidemic that dea has ever seen. >> inside the dea's largest drug testing lab, you'll find boxes and bags full of millions of counterfeit prescription pills made with deadly fentanyl, mainly by the mexican drug cartels. a record 77 million fake pills were seized by the dea last year. nationwide that's up 52% since 2022. dea chemists say seven out of ten street pills contain a potentially lethal dose of fentanyl. the cartels designed the counterfeit pills to look like the real thing. here the left pill is authentic xanax, and the right is counterfeit. one way the cartels smuggle fentanyl through the southern border is hidden in vehicles. in october, 300,000 counterfeit prescription pills were found inside this suv gas tank. further north, thousands of pounds of fentanyl powder are moved to hundreds of underground mills in new york, where

machines press it into pills. former dea chief of operations ray donovan says the migrant crisis is tied to the fentanyl crisis. >> the cartel controls those routes into the united states, so those caravans, those migrants that are coming up to a certain port of entry, let's say texas, the cartel will drive them in the direction so that they could smuggle drugs. the opposite direction. >> drug cartels are even trying to take advantage of the taylor swift travis kelce super bowl mania. the dea in new york recently seized these glass scenes or drug baggies with the name of the kansas city chiefs tight end stamped on them. the cartels are trying to market to young people primarily selling fentanyl on social media, a very frustrated donovan says social media companies have done little to stop it. >> we informed them. we told them about it. we were pursuing networks all over these various platforms, and there was always a reluctance. >> in new york, brian dennis,

jose. to start off your saturday morning, this area of low pressure. we've been watching this guy kind of drift to the east of california for with its current position, it's drawing in some cold air from the north. so that's why we've had a bit of a chill in the air over the past few days. but look what's happening offshore this area of high pressure is rebuilding and as a result, we have a dry weather pattern, a sun cloud mix. this weekend, especially as we head towards sunday for super bowl sunday. here's the forecast models you can pick out. we're looking pretty good for your saturday with mostly sunny skies . maybe some patchy fog though. to start things off, especially in the inland valleys and then into the afternoon hours, we're looking okay. and then for sunday looks like a solid cloudy start sunday morning and then into the afternoon hours. partly sunny skies by about 3 or 4:00 for the second half of the weekend. so we have that cold start tomorrow morning, mostly sunny skies into the afternoon hours. temperatures this weekend will be a little bit warmer. that means we begin to introduce some 60s back in the forecast out toward concord, fairfield and redwood city tomorrow afternoon. here's a look. look ahead. your five day forecast.
