inside a san mateo home. good evening. i'm julie hanan and i'm mike mibach. >> it all began this morning with a911 call and then a welfare check. >> and it ended with the four bodies, including two young boys being found in a home in the sugarloaf area of san mateo as ktvu tori gaines reports, investigators are still working to figure out exactly what happened. >> a 911 call came in just after 9 a.m, asking police to check on the residents of a home on alameda de las pulgas because no one had heard from them. in some time. san mateo police arrived and checked all exits of the home where they found no signs of forced entry. when officers made their way inside the house, they found four people with, quote, obvious signs of death. >> one of the people was an adult male, another was an adult female, and there was two young children involved. >> the two children were both young boys. police said their identities have not yet been released, but detectives and officers remained inside of the home investigating. hours later,

the street was closed near the home and neighbors were escorted to and from their homes while police continued their work. neighbors tell us this was a stunning discovery, so close to home, matthew sheldon and his daughter marianne have both lived in san mateo their whole lives, and they say they've never seen anything like this. >> there's hardly any any deaths in this area ever. >> but they say they aren't worried for their own safety. i would definitely be more worried if, um, like they said, that they were searching for someone, but it doesn't seem like that's the case. one man we spoke to hopes that more neighbors will be willing to reach out to one another to build a tighter knit community. >> yeah, you hope that people talk more, right? again you hate to rally around a tragedy like this or have something like this happen, but you would hope people come out into their neighborhoods and you see people out on the street trying to figure out what happened, and maybe that'll get people talking again. >> the police echoed the comments of neighbors about how unusual these deaths are. >> this is not a normal call for anyone. um, it's tragic for the family, the community, the officers, everyone involved.

>> as san mateo police continue their investigation, they say there is no threat to the general public at this time. and they're not currently searching for any suspects in san mateo. tori gaines, ktvu, fox two news a man has been placed on probation after being convicted in the crash that killed former ktvu news director fred zander. >> zander was in a crosswalk at lincoln avenue and walnut street in alameda when he was hit by a ford pickup truck. driven by 33 year old michael williams in june of 2021, alameda police determined that williams was driving under the influence. williams pleaded no contest to felony vehicular manslaughter and was sentenced last month to more than two years in jail with credit for time served. he was released from custody. he was placed on three years probation and ordered to attend an alcohol rehab program. >> tonight. ktvu has learned that an off duty oakland police officer was arrested over the weekend on suspicion of dui. oakland police say that officer d nzalez is on

administrative leave. the chp says alarashed into a chp patr vehicle on east 80 in fairfield, 3:00 saturday morning slow lane at the time due ton another incident. one officer was treated and released from the hospital. >> attorneys representing some of those who blocked the bay bridge last fall to protest the israel-hamas war, are now urging san francisco's district attorney to drop all of the charges as the attorneys for the so-called bay bridge 78 say the district attorney's office has a pattern of anti palestinian bias, and they're calling on her to drop the cases. ktvu christien kafton has more. >> police arrested dozens of protesters in mid-november following a protest against the israel-hamas. war that brought traffic to a standstill on the san francisco bay bridge. now, dozens of those protesters are facing misdemeanor charges of unlawful public assembly, false imprisonment, refusing to comply with a peace officer failure to disperse and obstruction of a roadway. now, their attorneys

have sent a letter to san francisco's district attorney, brooke jenkins, urging her to drop those charges, raising concerns about, quote, a pattern of anti palestinian racism in her office. >> we're worried that that it permeates the office. this bias i think that the manner in which these cases were charged shows that there overcharged and there really is no point in pursuing this prosecution. >> the attorneys point to comments made by a prosecutor who reportedly sent emails with anti-palestinian language, and the attorneys say the district attorney herself mischaracterized another protest as being pro hamas. >> it speaks to a pattern of anti-palestinian islam phobic bias in brooke jenkins office. so what we're asking is simply for her to dismiss the charges against the bay bridge 78, the district attorney's office has responded, saying the prosecutor who made the comments does not reflect the views of the district attorney's office, and that there is zero tolerance for

bias of any sort in their charging decisions or how they handle cases. >> the accused are due back in court in mid-march, where attorneys will attempt to have the case thrown out, saying the prosecution hasn't laid out exactly who the victims were in the november protest. their attorneys say they could raise the issue of bias in the da's office. in court somewhere down the road in san francisco, christien kafton, ktvu, fox two news. >> former president donald trump is asking the us supreme court to extend the delay in his election interference trial. trump's legal team argues he is immune from prosecution on charges he plotted to overturn his 2020 election loss is lawyers filed an emergency appeal with the court today, just four days after the justices heard trump's separate appeal. to remain on the presidential ballot, despite attempts to kick him off because of his efforts following his election loss in 2020. donald trump, also facing charges for his alleged mishandling of classified documents found at his home in florida today. the

former president attended a closed door hearing in the case, as fox's rebecca castro reports. this comes after a special counsel cleared president biden in an investigation into his own handling of classified papers. >> president joe biden and donald trump were both accused of mishandling classified documents. biden storing classified materials in a cardboard box in his garage while trump kept stacks of daca at mar-a-lago after a lengthy investigation, biden's case was closed last week. while trump is still trying to avoid going to trial, the president was found to have have been engaged in no wrongdoing, unlike president trump, which has 91 felony counts pending against him. monday, the gop front runner in his attorneys will sit down for hours with the federal judge in florida for a closed door hearing to discuss which pieces of classified evidence are fair game in court. this trial is scheduled to start in may. the biden department of injustice let crooked joe off the hook for some of his very egregious.

marriage, and the city began issuing marriage licenses to same sex couples. well, today we did speak with john lewis and stuart gaffney, who are among the first same sex couples to be married in san francisco, 20 years ago today. >> i realize this was the first time in our lives as lgbtq couples, as a couple and as an lgbt person for ourselves. but this was the first time in our lives that our government was treating us as equal human beings. >> the couple later joined other plaintiff in a lawsuit in 2008 that ourd california's ban on same sex marriages. they were remarried later that same year. the fbi is seeing a rising trend in romance scams throughout the bay area. >> victims with the fbi's san francisco division lost more than $27 million to romance scams last year. the fbi says the scammers first gain the victim's trust and then persuade them to send money. older adults

are most often the targets in these scams. the county with the highest dollar amount lost was alameda county, at $9.4 million and 68 reported cases. that's followed by contra costa county, where victims lost more than $6.5 million in 65 cases, and then santa clara county, with a loss of $6.1 million and 102, reported cases of romance scams coming up tonight at 630, frustration over crime continues for business owners in oakland. what they're asking the city to do and the investigation continues into the torching of a waymo driverless car in san francisco. >> and we got rain in the five day. that's not really a surprise for february. i'll let you know the timing and the potential amounts. we could see back here in a minute. and not the hero's welcome. >> they were hoping for. but still plenty of niners fans showing up for the showing. the love for their team as they return ome to t bay are

super bowl. city super bowl 59 will be held in new orleans today. they unveiled the new logo, all bright colors. the nfl collaborated with a local nola artist for that logo. next year, super bowl will be shown right here on ktvu. >> all right, i hope you had an okay day, considering last night was a hard loss for everybody and just kind of getting through, getting through the day to day. we did a story last night on how many people call in sick after super bowl. and it was, i think, julie, it was like 25 million people nationwide. and it's a lot, i think i think mike will almost try to call it. yeah it should be a holiday, a recovery day. oh my god. yeah yeah yeah. it is weird though isn't it? how the energy just falls out of the room. i mean, it was such an exciting time. and then when it, i don't know, it's i'm not even a huge super fan or anything, but it's like, wow, that was that was hard. so i hope your day is going the right way. the weather was good. i mean, it had been way bummer ish if it had been raining and so today it was beautiful, sunny

and mild temperatures a little above the average, especially in san rafael at 64 degrees 64. in san jose. pretty pleasant, just a tad above the average in some places. tomorrow is going to be nice too. a few more clouds, perhaps temperatures will be upper 50s low 60s yet again, and then we'll head into for the wednesday period with clouds increasing and then that opportunity for some scattered showers. wednesday system looks really weak. the main event is going to be friday night into saturday and probably into sunday morning. the main event being it's going to rain, right. and so we'll see. maybe get a couple inches of rain in that time period. lots is going to move around though, because it is essentially an atmospheric river that is still fluctuating and still changing. so just know that window is going to be wet that wednesday thing and then into friday night, saturday and into sunday morning and then watch it change a little bit between now and then and just dial in your plans that way. so tomorrow looks good though dry. when i come back, we'll put it all together and i'll show you that model that shows all that. all right, bill, thank you. >> sounds good. shots fired on a crowded subway platform.

one of the injured is in critical condition. the others are described as serious police say they are looking right now for two people who ran from the scene. we're also learning more tonight about a shooting at a church in houston, texas. yesterday >> authorities say the young boy, who was critically wounded is the shooter's seven year old son. the shooter has been identified as janis moreno, a 36 year old woman. the shooting happened at the lakewood mega church, run by celebrity pastor joel osteen. police say moreno was walking in with her son. she had two guns and then opened fire. the motive is still unclear, but police say she had a history of mental illness and they also found anti-semitic writings in search of her items. >> we do believe that there was

a familial dispute that has taken place between, uh, her ex-husband and her ex-husband's family and some of those individuals are of our jewish. so we believe that that might, might possibly be where all of this stems from. >> the shooter was killed by off duty police officers who were inside the church at the time, along with the child, a man in his 50s was also shot and wounded. >> israeli forces say they rescued two hostages from a southern gaza city overnight in a raid that did kill more than 60 palestinian teens. as fox's mike tobin reports, this all comes as the biden administration is now warning israel about expanding its operations in the region. >> hours after being freed in an overnight raid, two israeli hostages reunited with their families on monday. israel's military says the operation began just before 2 a.m. local time, when special forces entered a building in the southern gaza city of rafah.

they found the two men on the second floor and led them out of the building. while under fire from hamas. we have a moral obligation to bring all our hostages home. >> we will continue doing everything every everything in our power to fulfill. >> israel's air force backed up the ground troops with airstrikes, which the hamas run palestinian health agency says killed dozens of people. it comes following warnings from the biden administration to exercise caution before entering rafah. president biden and jordan's king abdullah discussed israel's expanding military operations during a meeting at the white house on monday. >> we're actively working for peace, security and dignity for both the palestinian people and the israeli people. >> meanwhile, in northern gaza, israeli forces say they uncovered a top hamas intelligence hub below the headquarters of the un agency for palestinian refugees. israel has previously accused unwra of collaborating with hamas. >> they're not our problem. our

problem is the hamas. is the hamas working in the unwra and under the unwra? >> unwra denies knowing what was underneath the building, saying it was evacuated after the attacks in october in tel aviv. mike tobin, fox news. >> a mother in the east bay says her daughter was bullied by students and assaulted by a teacher at a catholic school in dublin. her daughter was expelled for fighting, even though she says the 13 year-old had been asking the administration for support. halcyon lindo says her eighth graders neck was swollen after a fight at saint raymond catholic church in dublin. she says it all started in december when her daughter told her about being bullied. lindo claims white students were making monkey noises at her black daughter and calling her racial slurs. she says she met with the principal to report the bullying and discuss the solutions. he sat there and heard her story and saw her tears. >> i mean, she could barely speak when she was explaining how the comments made her feel, what those girls were saying to

ramon ahmad tells me the burglars stole a cash register and caused thousands of dollars in damage. >> the broke in the store that closed today no money, no cash, no customer. >> and this is the worst. it has ever been. it's very i mean, very scary. i mean, we need solutions now. we need things to be done now. >> ali al-basri of the bay area small merchants chamber of commerce, says some store owners are considering suing the city because they feel helpless, like the juice bar owner. >> i told them not to call his insurance because as soon as he called his insurance to file a claim, then the insurance company will, uh, just will not renew his policies. and this is the problem that we are suffering right now. >> the break-in happened a day after al-basri spoke at a rally outside the in-n-out in east oakland, which will close next month. because of crime, we are in a state of emergency right here and we are going downhill fast. >> this is a nosedive and we need to step up and stop this insanity. >> same group has held similar rallies across oakland demanding solutions.

>> right. i am, you know, just as responsible as the mayor and the rest of them. >> oakland city council member noel gayo attended the rally and agreed more needs to be done by those in office. the reality is, in government and i said from the federal, you know, to the state, to the county, to the city, we need to be more in cooperation with each other. >> and we as a taxpayer demand that action. >> when business owners plan to meet with attorneys this week to determine whether they will sue oakland henry lee, ktvu, fox two news and here now is an example of the crime small business owners are dealing with in oakland, someone broke into a nail spa on lakeshore avenue sometime over the weekend. >> a resident shared pictures of the shattered windows. the thieves got away with a cash register. the resident also said he tried to report the break in to the non-emergency line for oakland police, but ended hanging up the phone after it rang for ten minutes without anyone picking up. the shop was closed over the weekend for the lunar new year, but eventually the owners did arrive and dealt with the damage.

>> san francisco police say they are investigating after a waymo autonomous vehicle was set on fire over the weekend. it happened on jackson street near grant at about 9:00 friday night . fire officials say more than a dozen people surrounded the vehicle, which was empty at the time. they spray painted graffiti on it, smashed the windows and then lit a firework inside, mayor london breed said in a statement, quote, it was a dangerous and destructive act of vandalism. chinatown is one of the densest neighborhoods in san francisco, and any fire could explode and spread among tightly packed buildings to endanger lives, homes and businesses. >> san francisco police say they did arrest 23 people in connection with two drug sting operation around un plaza. they say that number includes 16 dealers who were booked and cited for sale or possession and other charges last week. they also seized more than $4,500 in cash and 838g of suspected narcotics. they say the nighttime operations will continue on a consistent basis.

>> san jose is facing a financial roadblock in its plan to build hundreds of tiny homes for the homeless. last year, governor newsom promised to send the assembled sheds to the city to help alleviate its homeless problem. but as ktvu south bay reporter jesse gary explains, newsom's promise is now coming with new costs. >> it's symbolizing unity at a vietnamese new year's celebration at san jose city hall, mayor matt mahan mulling the latest wrinkle in his sheltering of the unhoused. >> the important thing is that we get these units built and we get people out of encampments and indoors. last march, governor gavin newsom, using state funds and enlisting the state's national guard to build and deliver 1200 tiny homes around california, including the san jose. >> when that individual is ready that we have a place to go, or at least another option in terms of the alternatives to living out in the streets and sidewalks . >> now, his office says the

state will send cities $12.7 million, not pre-construct tiny homes for san jose, it's $63,500 per tiny home. the price per unit, according to the state, would be $13,225, plus the cost of site preparation and construction that could be considerable. and according to city officials, creates a financial gap, provides state funds to purchase small homes at a state negotiated rate. still delivers on our original commitment, according to the governor's office. this happens a lot. >> politicians make promises they don't deliver. you know, the people die. in the meantime, pastor scott wagers has spent decades working to provide necessities for the south bay's unhoused residents. >> he's been an ardent opponent of the tiny homes plan and sees the latest change as representative of his years long struggle. it's an affront to all people of conscience that really try hard, you know, to house people. >> for advocates, it's a crisis because we watched and know the

people and watch them perish. but politicians say things and it sounds good and they're convincing. but look at the facts. >> the facts, according to san jose's mayor, is that this change will produce a shortfall in funding. 200 tiny homes that will be built on the vta site in north san jose, mahen remains confident the city council will find money in a budget surplus. that's shrinking toward deficit. i understand that we've got some budget challenges over the next year or two, but we're going to keep pushing in sacramento for funding to be devoted to expanding our shelter system, our inpatient treatment system, so that we have places for people to go and we can require that people come indoors from encampments. >> that's the formula. >> the mayor says this will not affect the timeline for the tiny homes to be built in north san jose at san jose city hall, jesse gary, ktvu, fox two news coming up, we take a look back at the super bowl ads, the winners, the losers, and the one ad that had a presidential candidate apologizing to his family and not the clean

little more. so maybe a degree degree cooler but very similar. beautiful outside tonight. above freezing because of the clouds. so that's cool. we don't have a frost advisory or freeze warning which is we haven't really had a lot of them this year. we've had some frost advisories, but not a lot of freeze warnings that usually comes february march, but it's been kind of nice not, you know, for the plants. i guess this is the big system. that's kind of the weekend. that thing's getting ready to go. and yeah, that's a pretty active pacific for sure. and with that means we're going to be seeing some some waves along the coast get a little bigger. nothing. i've not seen anything giant but just it'll come up. you know, 6 to 8ft, something like that. the current temperatures which are pretty nice. i mean, for upper 50s, overnight lows above freezing 39 in fairfield, 43 in antioch. that's kind of pleasant for this time of year. then here's the model. look what it does. it goes okay tomorrow morning. tomorrow afternoon. here's the rain for wednesday. wednesday morning, wednesday afternoon and maybe a little bit into thursday morning. but you can see it right. so now you're into thursday. friday looks very similar. and then it is saturday
