>> the two men were painting a building, one of them came into contact with a power line. that contact enough to injure both men. good evening. i'm greg lee and i'm cristina rendon. >> both men are expected to recover but are now being evaluated for their injuries. ktvu henry lee was in san jose today where investigators are still working to determine why those men were exposed to the power line. >> two men painting part of a building in north san jose were hurt when one of them made contact with a high voltage transmission line. it happened at the crescent village apartment complex on zanker road near vallejo street, at about 11 friday morning. this view from skyfox shows part of the rescue effort. >> this was not pg related. this was a third party incident. pg and e came here to secure the scene for fire to be able to facilitate rescue battalion chief mark thomas of the san jose fire department says the two were working at the top of a boom lift about 40ft from the ground, when one of them somehow made contact with the pg and e transmission line. >> that man was electrocuted and suffered burns to his head and chest. the other suffered flash

burns, both were able to move on their own power as firefighters helped them down with a ladder truck, but only after pg and e made sure the lines were de-energized and they were taken to the burn unit at valley medical center in san jose. the circumstances leading up to the incident are under investigation by cal osha, which looks into workplace mishaps. >> we don't know what the sequence of events were that that made the that led to the contact with the transmission lines as one of the workers that was in the bucket made contact with the transmission transmission lines and he suffered burns, electrical burns. >> that's really sad to hear. >> jenny liu lives at the complex. she said residents had recently been told by building management that painting crews will be doing some touch up work on their balconies. liu was at her dentist's office nearby when all of a sudden the power went out and suddenly the whole plaza has the power outage. >> so it has to be done in the middle. so all of the customer has to, uh, get out. >> the fire department tells me

the rule of thumb is to always stay at least 30ft away from live power lines. why this didn't happen? here is under investigation in san jose. henry lee, ktvu, fox two news. >> eight people died in a crash today in the central valley. officers were called to a crash this morning near avenue seven and road 22, in rural madera county. it's about 25 miles northwest of fresno. there, the chp says they found eight people killed in a crash, the fresno bee reports. seven of the people were farm workers traveling in a van. the other person killed was in a pickup truck. the road where the crash happened is closed as the chp continues its investigation. right now, it is unclear what caused the crash. chp says all the victims are men. >> new at 644 pounds of narcotics are now off the streets after san francisco police arrested four people accused of selling drugs in the tenderloin. this week, officers arrested four people at homes in hayward and san leandro. police say they had seen the suspects bringing drugs to the tenderloin and selling them during the raids. officers say they found

44 pounds of illegal drugs, including more than 8 pounds of fentanyl and more than 32 pounds of meth. >> and these are drugs that would have ended up on the streets of san francisco and the tenderloin community. um, this is a part of a months long investigation with our sfpd, uh, narc team and in cooperation in cooperation with the dea. so it's really, i mean, we're really happy that we were able to get this amount of drugs off the streets. >> officers also seized a ghost gun and several thousand dollars in cash. the four people who were arrested were now at alameda county jail facing drug related charges. >> a man is now in custody after falling asleep at the wheel and leading fairfield police on a ase. this start just after one this morning when an ofcer was dispatched to heath drive at the scene, they found 41 year old dante jones asleep at the wheel with the car in drive ocking westbound traffic on air base parkway. the driver did not cooperate with pole an led them on a short chase. police say they ved a bag

he tried to toss while running coaini marijuana for sale. jones was arrested in a restaurant bathroom for dui felony evasion and marijuana sales. a group of community organizations in san francisco commending a police commission vote that intends to curb racial bias in police stops. the policy, approved wednesday, restricts pretext stops, which use vehicle, pedestrian and traffic codes as pretext to search people and their cars, disproportionately affecting people of color. member of the coalition to end bias stops and director of the sf public defender integrity unit, brian cox, says these modest but important changes will help turn the tide on the unacceptable racial disparities in police stops and spare countless individuals and families the trauma of unlawful searches, needless detentions and police violence. sfpd now has 90 days to implement the policy. >> the peninsula now has a permanent place to go where people can go to learn about and help preserve black history. the da, minnie hoskins black history

museum and learning center is in redwood city. it had been a pop up museum for about three years until state senator josh becker helped to secure $2 million in state funding for the 22,000 square foot facility for longer time, the museum showcases the history of black americans through music, politics, invention, sports, and the struggle for racial injustice, the museum's founder says. the whole point is education, and i think that it has been too long that even within two fauci 24, the history is still not taught. in the schools, just walking around here and learning has shown me the influence of black history and how important it is that everyone has the ability to come here all year round. the permanent home of minnie hoskins black history museum and learning center is on jefferson avenue in redwood city, right across the street from city

hall. >> this weekend, san francisco is holding its fifth annual black history month parade. the celebration kicks off tomorrow at 11 a.m. at the bayview opera house near newcomb and third, after the parade, there will be a block party that's expected to begin at 1230 at the southeast community center near evans. and third, organizers say tomorrow's events will feature live music, retail and food vendors, a gumbo cookoff, a kids zone and horseback rides. also happening this weekend, the black joy parade returns to downtown oakland. the celebration aims to provide a hyper positive environment, ample fying the african diasporas contribution to history and international culture. there will be dancing, music, art, food and more. the parade will take place just outside the gates of bart's 19th street oakland station. sunday afternoon, starting at 1230, and bart wants to make sure you know you can easily get to this weekend's festivities via train. both 12th street and 19th street stations are just a block from the parade. if you'd like to skip the parade and go right to

the celebration area, the 19th street station will drop you off inside all the action. >> the warriors are continuing their celebration of black history month today. the team released a video with all-star guards chris paul and stephen curry. the duo spoke about why historically black colleges and universities, also known as hbcus, are important to them. >> i grew up around all different hbcus, and i wanted to graduate from one, and i did from one seven states. so go rams is working with howard has been just a great experience to be able to leverage my love for the game of golf and to create scholarships, to create, you know, opportunities for black and brown kids to say, hey, i want to play golf at the collegiate level. >> both paul and curry played college basketball at predominantly white institutions . they now contribute to hbcus. s in 2019, curry made a seven figure donation to howard university. >> our special program, voices for change, returns this weekend for its season five premiere.

the opening act for saturday's chinese new year parade in san francisco. >> so well, people in the south bay now rallying behind a san jose pie shop, the owner says. earlier this month, tesla ordered thousands of dollars worth of pies and then canceled at the last minute. many community members heard what happened and are now showing her support. as ktvu jesse gary explains. elon musk of tesla is now promising to make things right. fresh. from the oven, a steaming controversy has cooled and led to a bumper crop of success for the giving pie bakery. >> it's not even 11, and we already are out of pies, and we have to make another run for it. >> this run on pie minis and full size comes courtesy of the willow glen community and beyond. shortly after the 7 a.m. opening friday night, nonstop customers for owner vangie ross tirrenia. from first timers to long timers, i came this morning to bring a bunch of pies to my

far fewer students these days. it is a trend that began in 2019 and made worse with the pandemic . ktvu tom vacar spent the day looking at the hard numbers at both universities and students are facing in the rapidly evolving world of higher education. >> for many generations, american rouz believe that a college degree was the promise of a better life on many levels. >> that's what i was told. you know, that you go to school to get a degree, and then after that degree you start earning money. but that's not always exactly the case. as we know. >> former golden gate university business school dean and author of a book, critical of higher education, terry conley, says this. >> in 2010, the broad american population, regardless of their politics, really expected, wanted their children to go and complete college. okay. right now, that number is less than

half. >> the nonprofit campaign for college opportunity found that csu's 23 campuses statewide enrollment declined by 6.5, almost 28,000 fewer students. locally, sonoma states enrollment is down 34. csu east bay down 25, san francisco state down 20. on top of that, the face of the student body is changing. white student enrollment declined by 13.1. black student count was down 5.4. asian students down 4.1, while the latino student count was up 4.1. all of this made far worse by the iuuo, and we've had inflation, including the continued even excess inflation in the cost of going to college. >> even at state schools. >> i think it's always worrying about money that's firsthand because, um, then you have to

pay off like loans if you're taking any. >> conley says crushing debt crushes, amassing other wealth. >> right now, you can't even get in the door of buying a house. if you've got the kind of student loan burdens that people are carrying, conley says. >> the few able to go to elite schools such as stanford or harvard will do just fine. but in the real world, many cost conscious students have opted to enroll in community colleges, often with the promise that a traditional university will take them to complete their degrees to get the same courses at as csu or as a uc. >> and they're going to transfer you in any way. >> that said, half of those ages 18 to 29 told pollsters that a high school diploma and two years of community college is enough to get them through life. many others think trade schools, from carpenters to jet mechanics, will get them the high paying, skilled jobs they seek. in that scenario, colleges

lose, let's put it that way. >> so it's not just people not starting, it's folks not staying and cutting back their course commitments that is causing this sort of data to show up. >> and consider this. only 60% of the people who ever enroll in college at any level actually complete the process. tom vacar, ktvu, fox two news. >> student assistance at california state university campuses made history today by voting to unionize. the group voted 97% to join the csu employees union. the students say they voted in favor of organizing so they could fight for better pay, working conditions and benefits. the csu vice chancellor for human resources issued a statement today following. the announcement, saying in part, quote, the csu has a long history of providing on campus jobs to students through student assistant positions, which give our students the opportunity to gain valuable work experience. the csu respects the decision of

and the chronicle praises "her ideas to end soft corruption in politics." let's shake up the senate. with democrat katie porter. i'm katie porter and i approve this message. to the death of opposition leader alexei navalny and the two year anniversary of russia's invasion of ukraine. the president says the sanctions target those connected to navalny's imprisonment as well as russia's financial sector and defense industrial base. the sanctions will affect individuals and entities. almost 100 of those entities support russia's military efforts. >> we will continue to take actions to ensure mr. putin pays and a steeper price for his aggression abroad. the repression at home, um, this is the largest number of sanctions imposed on russia since it invaded ukraine two years ago. >> here in the bay area, two

schools are ringing bells to honor the ukrainian people. ktvu alex wertz spoke with those students who helped inspire uc berkeley and stanford to send a message to those suffering in the war torn country. >> it was the sound of bells playing the ukrainian national anthem at high noon friday at the uc berkeley campus for those who missed it, it will be happening again on saturday at noon. maksim zubov is working on his phd. he's in his fifth year studying mathematics here at uc berkeley. it was his idea to have the bells of the campanile ring, the national anthem of his native country of ukraine, acknowledging the second year of russia's vicious attack. >> a small, uh, they say, like a sequence of pieces that are going to be played for those on campus who heard the bells ringing in an unfamiliar tune, said they enjoyed it. >> i was great, but paul fontaine says he's concerned about if the russian attacks will end and the role of the

u.s. it will affect us if we don't get involved. >> zubov wants to help unify eastern europeans here in the states, letting them know that they're not alone in their grieving and worry about friends and family in their homeland. he was thrilled with the response from folks who heard it on campus. >> one of the person that they met, she heard about that in the news, and she actually ukrainian refugee whose family got separated. and she goes to berkeley high and she said, like, thank you so much for doing this. it really means a lot to me. >> in addition to uc berkeley, stanford as well as other universities like ut austin are commemorating this weekend's second anniversary of the attack on ukraine by playing their campanile bells with the national anthem of ukraine and other native songs to that country. there will be a rally at 11:30 a.m. saturday morning right here in berkeley, and everyone is invited from the public and afterwards there will be some cultural, food and events, allison kurtz in berkeley, ktvu, fox two news. >> we're introduced you to this

in san francisco are dancers from lisa performing arts in fremont. the group has traveled the world to compete and perform, but this is their first time being part of this historic parade. >> new at 630. ktvu is amber lee visited them at the studio where they practice and train to give us a preview. three. two. one. >> go! preparation happens before a performance. >> there's like a feeling of like rush you feel when you're putting on your costume. um, and you do your makeup, your hair. it makes me just feel so much more confident in myself. at lisa performing arts in fremont, dance is a way that i can express my feelings and emotions . >> reporter this is a rehearsal before dancers debut their opening act for the 2024 historic annual chinese new year

parade. i really like dancing with my teammates on stage and seeing each other perform and being there for each other. this dancer portrays the divine goddess of music, the guardian of cultural heritage, a healer whose melodies can soothe the troubled heart. white handkerchiefs symbolize winter snowfall before spring, ushering the year of the dragon. red lanterns are the guiding light of hope for these dancers performing cultural dances is a chance for them to step into two worlds. being chinese and american growing up in like the us, but like not being born in the us. >> it was kind of hard for me to always, i guess, find a way for me to communicate and like, express myself. and i think when i found dance, it was like, oh, wow, like, this is really resonates with me. >> with grace, agility and athleticism, these performers,

ages 7 to 17, tell me they strike a delicate balance with school and the pursuit of their passion. >> it's also trained me to become like, disciplined and to have a good work ethic. >> the dancers have trained together for a decade or more. >> we've known each other for like almost all of our lives, so they've become like basically my family. >> the team has won first place in national and international competitions. they've performed in places as far away as shanghai, beijing and russia. >> practicing all these hours, trying to get good at tricks, um, is something that i find really special. the studios founder, lisa dong, was a principal dancer with a professional company in china before immigrating to the united states. >> she passed on her passion to her students. >> i'm super proud of our dancers all their hard work. we are very excited for this chance to perform.

special performance at the jackson theater at ohlone college on may 19th, but first catch these dancers as the opening act of the chinese new year parade in fremont. amber lee ktvu, fox two news and we are just 24 hours away from the start of san francisco's chinese new year parade, and the city is ready to celebrate. >> ktvu christian captain was in union square today, which will be prime real estate for tomorrow's festivities. >> san francisco's union square is buzzing with activity as crews build grandstands and put up lighting for the city's annual lunar new year parade. parade goers say it's one of san francisco's signature events, but if you've never been here, this is something you don't want to miss because we are probably the second largest chinese new year in the world, right here in san francisco, and everybody comes down and has a great time. but this year, as in years past, there is an eye on security. san francisco's police chief says

his officers will be lining the parade route and marching as well, although there are no specific or credible threats. >> even with that, though, you know, oftentimes when things occur, there is no credible threat. there is no warning. so we have to be prepared for anything. and everything. >> the chief says uniformed and plain clothes officers will be deployed throughout the parade route and in the crowd. the police department says it also took a close look at the circumstances surrounding the super bowl parade shooting in kansas city. that left one woman dead and 22 other people injured . chief scott says he's asking for the public to be on the alert and to follow the advice that if they see something or to say something, if you see somebody with a weapon, please call it in. >> if you see something that looks suspicious, please call it in. and if you see something that looks like it's about to happen in terms of violence, call it in right away. report what you're seeing. we will be there. we will respond with recent political demonstrations over the conflict in the middle east and surrounding the apec summit. >> police say they're also

primary polling centers will open tomorrow in 29 counties, including. alameda, marin, napa, san mateo, santa clara and sonoma. early voting is already underway in san francisco. all california voters who registered to vote by tuesday should expect to receive a mail in ballot automatically. those who have not yet registered can go to a local election office, fill out a same day registration form and cast a provisional ballot. the public policy institute of california released new poll results this week for the us senate race in california. the poll was conducted from february

6th to the 13th. results show democrat adam schiff in the lead with 24% of the vote. democrat katie porter at 19, and republican steve garvey with 18. oakland democrat barbara lee has 10. the poll also found only 6% of voters are still undecided. the top two vote getters will be on the november ballot. >> well, today we wrapped up our series of interviews with three front runners in the race in to fill outgoing congressman anna eshoo seat in silicon valley. today on the four, we spoke with former san jose mayor sam liccardo about how he would approach working with leaders across the aisle. >> we know that background checks are incredibly important to improve safety for gun purchases. democrats and republicans strongly agree about 75% of americans do so. we yet we have enormous exceptions that enable people to get access to guns without any background check. so let's start with the areas where we can agree. >> liccardo also says if elected

into pleasant hill. it is now in the 60s around burlington and belmont. the winds are under ten miles per hour, and all of our spots tonight, overnight northeast at five. that's about it now. meanwhile, overnight night we're going to dip into the 40s. not as cold tonight as it was last night. and when we woke up this morning, some of our locations had temperatures in the high 30s. all right. here is your saturday as we're taking a look at our storm tracker. we kick it off from tonight and we forge ahead. now what we're looking at is by sun up tomorrow morning at 647, mostly sunny skies. we have this shield of cloudiness to the south of us. it's going to try to inch its way into the bay area. it's not going to make it for saturday. this area of low pressure though, is going to enhance once that cloud deck and it's going to move into our area by sunday. so saturday is going to be the dry day. sunday there's a slight chance of rain. you'll see it here. watch as the clock ticks on by right there. just kind of gets close enough. but that's about it. and then on monday we
