with african american artifacts makes a permanent home in san mateo county, and a new report shows a dramatic drop in california state university enrollment, with some of the steepest declines at bay area campuses. this is ktvu fox two news at 730. >> the california state university system losing tens of thousands of students now struggling to recover. >> good evening. i'm jana katsuyama new data shows among csu schools, sonoma state tops the list of declining enrollment. cal state, east bay and san francisco state also within the top five ktvu tom vacar for tonight. talked with an expert about factors that could be contributing to this troubling trend. >> for many generations, americans believe that a college degree was the promise of a better life on many levels. >> that's what i was told. you know that you go to the to a school to get a degree, and then after that degree you start earning money. but that's not

always exactly the case. as we know, former golden gate university business school dean, an author of a book, critical of higher education, terry conley, says this in 2010, the broad american population, regardless of their politics, really expected, wanted their children to go and complete college. >> okay, right now, that number is less than half the nonprofit campaign for college opportunity found that csu's 23 campuses statewide enrollment declined by 6.5, almost. 28,000 fewer students locally, sonoma state's enrollment is down 34. >> csu east bay down 25, san francisco state down 20. on top of that, the face of the student body is changing. white student enrollment declined by 13.1. black student count was down 5.4. asian students down 4.1, while the latino student count

campuses made history. today. the group of nearly 20,000 assistants voted to unionize, with 97% in favor of joining the csu employees union. the students said that they want better pay, working conditions and benefits. the csu vice chancellor for human resources issued a statement today following the announcement, saying in part, quote, the csu respects the decision of student assistants to form a union and looks forward to bargaining in good faith with. well, several bell towers in the bay area plan to play ukrainian songs and the national anthem tomorrow, marking the two year anniversary since russia's invasion that started the war. today kicked off the effort with a ukrainian national anthem, playing at uc berkeley's campanile tower at noon. maksim zubov, a graduate student in mathematics from ukraine, launched the effort to bring hope to fellow ukrainians

and supporters. >> a small, uh, let's say, like a sequence of pieces that are going to be played. so the first one is going to be korean national anthem at noon. after that, it's going to be taras shevchenko and three other pieces, the anthem and other songs will be played again at noon tomorrow with a rally scheduled at 11:30 a.m. on the steps below the tower. >> zubov says stanford university's hoover bell tower also plans to play the anthem at 10 a.m. saturday, as a show of support. well, two men painting a building in north san jose were hurt when one of them made contact with a high voltage transmission line. it happened at the crescent village apartment complex on zanker road near vallejo street at about 11 this morning. this view from sky fox shows the rescue efforts. san jose fire battalion chief mark thomas says the two men were working at the top of a boom lift about 40ft above the ground, when one of the victims somehow made contact with the

ppe transmission line. >> we don't know what the sequence of events were that that made the that led to the contact with the transmission lines. one of the workers that was in the bucket that made contact with the transmission transmission lines. and he suffered burns, electrical burns . >> by 3 p.m, rescuers were able to get the men down and take them to santa clara valley medical center for treatment. new. at 730, palo alto residents are being asked to notify law enforcement if they have security cameras on their property. police say the new neighborhood security camera program will help investigators after a crime is committed to contact camera owners who might have footage that can be used as evidence, police said. participation is voluntary and it will be up to the camera owners to decide what, if any, footage they want to share with police officers will not be able to access any of the cameras remotely. well, today we wrapped up our series of interviews with the three frontrunners in the

. now, obviously, there's a challenge, an ad on the topic of immigration, liccardo says that he wants to protect migrants who are seeking asylum in the united states. >> he also mentioned as a former prosecutor who dealt with human trafficking cases, he would work to allocate more resources to secure the border. the former mayor is one of 11 people who are running to represent the 16th district, which stretches from pacifica up to san jose. the top two candidates in the march 5th primary will advance to the general election on november 5th. well new. at 730, another flaring incident is reported at chevron's richmond refinery today. chevron issued the alert just after 230 this afternoon. this is file video of the chevron site. today's event was classified as a community warning system level one hazardous materials incident. local officials confirmed that the flaring has since stopped the level one alert means that the flaring is not expected to have public health impacts.

the year of the dragon this weekend. organizers are predicting one of the biggest turnouts ever for this year's chinese new year parade. there will be a new 288 foot long green dragon and san francisco police chief bill scott says as in years past, safety is one of their top priorities. as they look at this, parade goers goers, they say, are urged to be vigilant. >> if you see somebody with a weapon, please call it in. if you see something that looks suspicious, please call it in. and if you see something that looks like it's about to happen in terms of violence, call it in right away. report what you're seeing. we will be there. we will respond. >> police say they also are ready for any protests that might pop up as well. the floats will start moving down market street at 515 saturday night. if you can't makt t in person, you can watch the parade right heren vu channel two and the

tuesday and wednesday. and janet, just a heads up by friday. the first day of march, rain returns. >> ooh. in like a lion. all right. thank you. so much, roberta. well, the us forest service says that they plan to spend millions of dollars to protect california landscapes this week, the service announced it is investing $179 million in order to protect california's forests from wildfires. this is part of a larger, $500 million national effort to expand work on the wildfire crisis strategy. this strategy aims to protect wildlife and communities from fires. the county receiving the most funds will be stanislaus county, which is set to receive more than $57 million for projects. there and an opportunity to get involved in fire service right here at home. santa clara county is accepting applications for new volunteer firefighter recruits, volunteer recruits will be trained in fire suppression, emergency response, fire prevention, community outreach and other skills. march

a $2 million state grant to establish a learning center in redwood city. the museum was created by carolyn hoskins. wife of former 49ers player bob hoskins. she created it to help her grandson domini and other bay area children learn about the wide range of black americans contributions to american music, politics, innovation, sports, and social justice. and i think that it has been on too long that that even within 2024, the history is still not taught in the schools. >> there's more than malcolm x and martin luther king. there's thurgood marshall, there's ida b wells, there's katherine johnson, there's philip emeagwali. there is a lot of people that have really paved the way for us to learn about themselves, to. >> the new museum and learning center is located on jefferson avenue, right across the street from city hall in redwood city. this weekend, san francisco is

should plan for detours and prepare for delays along highway 12. also new at 730, oakland is getting $14 million in additional funding from the state to shelter homeless seniors. the latest award from california's homekey program will fund support of housing in east oakland. the 40 unit dignity village on eads avenue and clara street will become the ninth oakland project created through a state pandemic program . the city's eight previous homekey awards have facility booted the conversion of existing buildings, such as motels and dorms, into the supportive housing the city of oakland is also contributing $6.3 million to the project, covering 15 years of operations. mayor shengtao, writing on social media today, said homekey has been an incredible program for our city, helping us secure 467 new units of permanent supportive housing since 2020. this aligns with oakland's goals of expand supportive housing with wraparound services to get
