women, the message and the warning signs about a possible problem can look and feel different from what men experience, especially when it comes to heart disease. that message for women is very important. heart disease is the leading cause of death for women in the united states. so here to tell us more about what we can do to stay healthy and informed. as doctor rita, doctor rita in kaiser permanente, medical physician in chief. doctor, i did not realize that the statistics are that one out of every five women in the us will die from heart disease. it's something that i think maybe a lot of people aren't familiar with. >> the statistics are really staggering. so i'm so glad that we're raising awareness about this. um, one out of every three women will have some type of cardiovascular event. it's staggering. i'm going to give
7:45 am
you another number that even for me as a medical professional, where i deal with heart issues each and every single day, it surprises me 40% of women over the age of 20 have some form of cardiovascular disease, and even more shocking than that, at this emphasis on gender and equity and awareness about this has only been recent. up until 2020, only 38% of cardiovascular studies have actually engaged and involved women. so we're learning more and more about how heart disease presents in women. >> so let's start with the basics. if you're talking about heart disease, what does that include in types of heart problem. >> yeah. so heart disease is a really general terme. i always describe the heart a lot like a house. there's a plumbing system and an electrical system and then the structure, the foundation, your doors or your valves. most commonly people think about heart disease in regards to the plumbing system, which is blockages in the blood vessels or something that leads to a heart attack. >> yes, but what are some of the other problems that can be just as devastating? >> yes. so sometimes people experience arrhythmia problems, which is an electrical system.
7:46 am
that's where you can get palpitations or very fast, irregular heart rhythms. >> what are some of the warning signs, early warning signs that that everyone, especially women, should look out for? because some of the symptoms of these problems affect women differently than men? >> yes, absolutely. so often the classic signs and symptoms that people hear about is an elephant sitting on the left side of your chest with pain radiating down your left arm. so pressure on the chest. >> yes. >> and while that can be common and is very common in both men and women, women often present with much subtler signs, so that can be anything like a backache or fatigue or feeling like, gosh , i really don't feel right. i'm getting short of breath as i'm doing my normal activity, like carrying a bag of groceries or climbing up a flight of stairs. the symptoms can be much subtler . >> so when should women go to their doctor? at what point should you take it more seriously? yes >> so if you notice, first of all, any type of crushing chest pain, you should seek care immediately. but when you're noticing even more subtler signs
7:47 am
like, gosh, i'm not able to walk or do the same amount of exertion or exercise that i normally did before. i'm starting to get symptoms on the sides of my chest or the center of my chest. i'm starting to get dizzy or palpitations and or my exertion levels are just way down and getting short of breath . something. know your body and know when those symptoms are different and trust your instincts. >> if you feel like something's not right. >> there is something about a woman's instinct that is. that's absolutely correct. >> yes. what are things we can do before it reaches that point to prevent this? i mean, we know, you know, eat healthy, but sometimes there's some conflicting information out there about what constitutes healthy eating for your heart. >> so it's a new year, and i always try to set very realistic goals for myself. so one of the things that i tell all my patients as i'm seeing them, whether their heart patients or not, is number one, eat healthy. you're absolutely right. and so this doesn't mean going on any type of extreme diets. it means eating more fresh fruits, vegetables, lean meats, fishes, that type of thing. secondly, getting more active. one of my
7:48 am
new year's resolutions, for example, is to simply be more active. it doesn't mean running a marathon last, getting more steps in, just getting more steps in. last weekend, for example, my family and i went up with one of our best family friends up to tahoe and it wasn't a marathon. i'm clearly a california girl, so i'm not that good in snow. but you know, we built snowmen. we played and made, had a snowball fight. those types of things getting more active and engaging. the kids to do that as well. >> anything that gets you out of your chair or out of your chair. >> yes. and just be realistic about what you can do. look, i'm a busy working mom and professional like many other women out there, and finding ways to incorporate your family and your life into it and things that are fun. number three, don't be afraid to actually confront and know your numbers right. i think sometimes, particularly as women, we spend so much time taking care of everybody around us, whether it be family, friends, partners, kids, make sure that you also take that mental space and time to care for yourself. so know
