sierra. stay tuned. because pam just about to tell you a little bit about what's going on in the sierra. one more thing. that buttonhole of this commute here in the bay area, we do have a little bit of slowing on the altamont pass. it's not completely clear. so if you're driving from tracy into livermore, there is going to be some slow traffic. it's 632. let's go back to the desk, mark. >> all right. thank you. sal. we are talking about our top news this morning. the snow a powerful blizzard moving through the sierra as steve just mentioned, it is expected to bring close to ten feet of snow. so steve, beautiful snow, right? as steve says, unless you're stuck in it, really coming down in tahoe city, as you can see, want to take you to olympic valley road. roads are complete, covered in snow. you can see that one car out there. so hopefully people are abiding by staying inside. if you can chain control are in effect this morning for parts of 80 and certainly on 50, the chp says you should not be on the roads
6:34 am
if you do not have to be out there now. ktvu james torres on the road to lake tahoe this morning. he's been giving us the conditions on the way. uh, chain checks, i think around baxter. let's check in. are you are out of the car now, james, where are you? >> we stepped out of the car. pam, good morning to you. we are at the point where basically, we cannot go any further because we don't have chains equipped with our car. this morning we just got off of 80 here. we're near blue canyon, about 30 miles away from truckee. you can see what's going on right next to us. a number of these big rig trucks have pulled over to the side here, likely because they don't have chains on their tires. about 1015 miles ago, we passed colfax. that was the point where every truck driver needed to have chains. you weren't allowed to go on beyond that. if you didn't. and now we're we're at we passed a couple checkpoints from chp and caltrans. at one point they even pulled us over just to see and ask us what what we had did. we have chains? did
6:35 am
we have an all wheel drive, all wheel drive car? uh that we were driving in? of course we do. uh, we don't have chains with us, but we do have an all wheel drive, and that's what allowed us to go down a little further here. but those, uh, officers were pulling us over, said, you go 20 more miles, and that's probably as far as you can get. and that's where we're at this morning, about 30 miles away from truckee. so we made it actually pretty far. and for the most part, the road conditions from the bay area to about maybe two thirds of the way up here, we're perfectly fine. not much rain coming down. so that means the roads weren't all that slick. but i think the last 10 to 15 miles that it took us to get up here, that's when everything changed. in almost an instant. the wind picked up, the fog came out of nowhere. we started seeing the snow come down, and we started seeing those roads get a lot slicker, a lot quicker. i'll show you right behind me here, because we do have, uh, a number of snow plows that have been making their way through here, trying to clear some of the snow off the roadways by the way, the
6:36 am
roadways are full of snow. i mean, it's at the point where you're not seeing the road at all here. so we have certainly been taking it slow on the roads. we certainly haven't seen many other cars on the roadways either. chp, caltrans, they're pretty much saying if you want to go to tahoe, just don't do it this weekend because the road conditions are going to be really tough. and i mean, we saw how tough it got very quickly. and we're only just scratching the surface of how bad these conditions can get. you see, the wind kind of pushing the snow and some of that sleet in front of us this morning. this is just kind of where it all gets started. it is much worse the further east you head, the closer to the sierra you get. so please keep that in mind. if you are still considering to make your way out to the mountains for this weekend. of course, the snow is beautiful. it looks great. very pretty to look at, but once you start getting into trouble, it is very hard to navigate out of that. chains are absolutely required from this point forward, which is why we won't be going any further from here. of course, we'll keep an
6:37 am
eye on these conditions. i'm sure the snow is only going to get, uh, a little harder throughout the morning. we'll keep you posted all morning long. uh, dave and pam, we'll send it back to you on the desk. >> all right. james torres. thank you. well, you heard and you saw james. that blizzard is big enough that some ski resorts have already decided they're closing for the day at palisades tahoe. the alpine side will be closed today. the palisades side will have limited operations at heavenly mountain resort. they've closed the gondola and the upper mountain lifts until this storm is over. we're just taking this day by day right now . >> and the last thing, frankly, is that we have to take a look at road conditions. is it safe for people to get to our mountain resort? >> operators say although this blizzard will hurt business this weekend, long terme, all of this snow could extend the ski season . and don't forget you can get updates on the weekend storm any time with the free ktvu weather app. it has the current
6:38 am
conditions, a live interactive radar and it breaks down the forecast hour by hour. >> it is very handy because you can look at your exact neighborhood or where you're going, where you need to go. sal. if people need to get out on the road, what do they need to know? >> well, you know, pam and dave, i want to ask you have either of you ever put chains on your vehicle? >> i have not, but i have struggled to, and that's why shortly after moving here to the bay area, i bought a four wheel drive vehicle. >> there you go. >> yeah, that's what a lot of people do. yeah that's a lot of people do. so remember, it's hard to do that here in the bay area. this morning's commute hasn't been all that, uh, affected by the wet weather. it's sure it's wet and there's been some rain, but it's been kind of a normal friday commute, which is to say, it's a little lighter, some slowing on the altamont. some of these other freeways are lighter than usual. there's a little bit of a backup at the bay bridge. interstate 880 looks good. and so does the san mateo bridge. so right now it looks pretty good. and if you
6:39 am
are driving on interstate 880, you can see for yourself. it is very nice. so at last, on this weekend on this week we have a decent commute in the bay area. 638 let's bring steve back in with today's weather. >> can i can i use the bobby caldwell version of at last? sal you can thank you. >> the late, great bobby, the late great i saw him back at the circle star. >> remember that sal? >> that place had a stage. >> it was the best place. rotated. >> people don't know that. >> ever. ever. the best place to see a show. all right. thank you . uh, system is enhancing. look at this. you're getting now you're getting the cold air advection. strong jet stream is punching in. and so that's what you're seeing. we're going to see rainfall rates enhanced. and this will continue the snow. uh, santa cruz mountains so far has had the most. and i don't think this changes any time soon. you take this low level jet 5000ft, and i mean, it's roaring. and then you take this deeper moisture, lift it, cool it, condense it. you can get some
6:40 am
pretty good rainfall. so maybe i'll have to adjust my i thought cazadero would get the most, but it looks like santa cruz mountains will probably be the winner after everything is said and done. here but this is really all about sierra snow here. 32 in truckee, 31 south lake tahoe, 46. ukiah, 47. crescent city. i mean, james is right there. not going anywhere past blue canyon. i'd be there, there at that shell station there. stuck. look at this cold core mass. now just rotating in. it'll it'll also give us thunderstorms with all that cold air beginning to swing in, we'll see some pretty good rainfall rates. maybe hail funnel clouds. that would not be surprised in the least, but really some incredible snow totals will end up here. so for today, even though we're getting somewhat of a break now off and on, rain, rain and wind will pick up later today. the coldest air arrives saturday. that will be our best bet for low snow levels. i think mendocino county, lake county that won't be a problem, but locally it would be on saturday afternoon evening if there's enough available moisture. sunday morning will be darn cold. next system looks to be tuesday. >> all right. time is 640. everybody's birthday is special.

but if you were born on yesterday's date, you're in a unique leap year category. >> i went to college with a guy who was born on february 29th, and i think i've told you guys we had a year five today party for him when we were in college because yes, you have a special birthday. all right, let's check in with garcia. that's cute. yeah, we had party hats and all of that. >> yeah. yes. i'm sure as a college man, he appreciated that it was very fun. all right, well, i get to join you to in studio new at seven, an obstacle that threatened an ambitious plan for safe parking to help unhoused people living in rvs has been resolved. and the new price tag for the city's largest ever safe parking site. then meta aiming to reshape your social media experience for the social media giants making a bold move away from hard news and politics, we'll be back

you know, after this storm blows over and the conditions kind of return to normal, you're going to have a nice layer there. uh, do you think you're going to stay open longer? uh, as a result of this? and so, you know, people who aren't coming this weekend may come as soon as they can. yeah >> yeah. well, sal, i'm going to give you some hard hitting exclusive news. uh, we actually just decided we're going to stay open until april the 28th. uh, we were planning to close on april 7th, so that's an exclusive right here for you, john slaughter from sugar bowl. >> be safe, my man. thank you for joining us. and, uh, good skiing to you. >> yeah. thank you. >> all right, john, uh. let's go. right to the bay area. traffic here and go right to the bay bridge. you know, those conditions in the sierra are not mirroring any big storm we have here. for now, we're going to talk to steve in just a second. interstate 880 looks pretty good. friday light conditions in some places. uh, the san mateo bridge looks okay. remember it is wet out there. let's talk about bay area weather now. and

at last, here's steve. so well done. >> that was a good interview. why thank you. john's good tv there. thank you. that's good to know. all right. uh, sounds correct there. there's not much happening here. it's mainly in the mountains. it's only just getting started. i mean, honestly, we're only about the second or third inning here. if you will. but the rain will pick up 32in truckee, 31 south lake tahoe. it's a combination of the snow and the wind. so i once you get above about 4500, 5000ft, that's when everything kicks in. and it's still going to be, you know, blizzard warning takes us until sunday. and some of the higher snowfall rates will definitely be today. and now this whole mass cold pool is moving in. you're starting to get the cold air advection strong jet stream support. and this is setting up for southwest direction. that is a slam dunk for the sierra nevada. so that's going to continue to produce some heavy snow. the coldest air arrives tomorrow. best opportunity for us to get snow here would be saturday i think it's a done deal for lake county. mendocino county, probably around 2500ft for us. would be would probably be about as low as we can go. i just
