from east palo alto is headed to houston to take part in the world championship competition. churro bots, a community based team made up of students from several different high schools. as ktvu lamonica peters tellst& us, the team now has to raise tens of thousands of dollars in order to make it to the big competition. high school and it changed mynt& life. >> students from ten different high schools meet at this east palo alto garagec to create, innovate andúcompete in robotics . coach matt pezzimenti created this workshop in his garage for students to design and create robots over a six week period. >> my mentors were super dedicated and i think just kind of set a particular standard for me. >> he helped form the hope horizon east palo alto robots in 2019, and now, after just five years of learning and perfecting those techniques, the robots are

overall decrease citywide in most crimes. a weekly crime report from oakland police shows a 32% increase in robberies compared to last year. the police are seeing an increase in smash and grab robberies, as well as people being targeted while they're inside their vehicles, theúpolice say extra police officers will be sent to the most affected areas. >> power is back on this morning atúuc berkeley after an outage that affected a large part of the campus. the university says the outage was caused by a fault in a high voltage line at one of the campus substations yesterday afternoon. that meant it was lights out at more than a dozen buildings on campus, including six student housing units. the haas school of business and memorial stadium. power was out for hours. many classes had to be canceled, but classes are spexpected to resume today. >> ourútime now 414. itúwas a tense couple of hours for students and staff at willow glen high school in san jose, lockdown after a student brought

a pellet gun to school, the school officials called a shelter in place and notified parents about what was happening on campus. nervous parents headed to cato avenue waiting for to get some . as san jose police surrounded the school library. well, about 2 p.m, the police posted on social media that a student was detained and a b-b gun had been found. both parents and students were shaken up by what happened. >> i was really scared because, like, i saw all the police officers and i was just really freaked out and i didn't know what to immediate reaction was just to run, no, that's not okay. that's not okay. >> look at him. that's not who d to leave early could go home withútheir parents. school officials, increased safety measures a student brought a ghost gun and a knife on the campus. >> well, the legendary mavericks

>> it's got inside the actual rope. >> we caught up with the group equipment at their base camp,ei- the pillar point harbor, where frank is the team manager. he has been patrolling this part of theúcoast since the 90s, trained every year as much as possible. >> every surf session out there is a training session for us. so you're right. it is. it does take a certain skill and a choreography to it, but it's something that we've mastered over the years. >> they utilize personal watercraft and rescue sleds on a surf day. since mavericks is a marine sanctuary, personal watercraft are only allowed under high surf conditions in the winter. while the ocean might resemble chaosl they have a strategy to maneuver in and out of danger. >> when someone does fall and someone's going we always have someone else shadowing so that if they miss them, then there's someone else in a position to intensel but ts also, you know, a calmness it, everything. there's crazy stuff happening all around you, but you know, if you can just keep your your mental head space

calm and clear and kind of like slow, slow down when everyone elseúis speeding up. >> each incoming swell is unique and introduces stops. >> we usually don't get much sleep the night before. a big swell and half of that's just watching the wind and the weather and seeing how it develops that go into providingúsafety while safety crews are working in the very dangerous conditions in the surf zone. >> there's another set of eyes a very different perspective. meet eric w nelson, the designated wave spotter. when mavericks is breaking, he hikes up this cliff with camera gear and a radio. >> my running of water and i'm afraid to swim. so i said, how can i how can i help out? and they said, you're on the cliff. keep an eye on things. writer down guy got swallowed. if you got a board, you spot board. not yet. i'm. >> after set waves roll through. there can be a lot to survey. eric paints the big picture that only he can see. there is constant communication with team

members and the harbor patrol. >> we had aúset wave come through. it was like sixúseven waves in the set and four of the guys got taken out. well, the rescue guys only thought that there was three guys going through the rocks, and i was able to spot that fourth guy. they're like, are we clear? i go, nope, there's another guy in there, slap up and over boom. >> and then you're down underwater. taylor paul, an experienced surfer from san francisco, was fall on this wave last year. i was so gassedi was, i wasn't i was just going to let the waves take me through the rocks. >> during the rescue, after coughing up blood, taylor could hear radio chatter. he watched e beginning. >> they were coordinating where they were going to pick me up. and how and if i was okay and where i was. and it just was like it it struck me how professional the whole thing was and how honest those guys are. >> when the waves go flat, the team stays busy, unified with other local agencies. they lead a free water safety summit every

robbed in 2023 still rose again. nearly 30% to 643, and the number injured nearly doubled to 61. earlier this week. the postmaster general, louis dejoy, put out a statement after a postal carrier in san francisco was robbed and the criminal was only sentenced to 30 days. he says in part, quote, itúis simply unacceptable that a criminal was sentenced to a mere 30 days for threatening a letter carrier at gunpoint and stealing his personal possessions, as well as both the public's mail and packages. this sends a concerning message of encouragement to our nation's criminals and a message of disregard toúwho deserve better spprotection and reassurance tht the law will take crimes against them seriously. there's also a new $150,000 reward just put out yesterday for information leading to the arrest of another robber. surveillance footage
