cesar chavez park here in berkeley. behind me. you see the line of people in front of this tent looks are here for this event. and just down the way there, starting with looks like some sort of prayer. they're calling it an interfaith. prayer, basically just a prayer circle here. it's kind of get things started. the walk here for about 20 miles out to further other parts of the east bay, passing a number of congregations, churches, you name it. that is the goal for the day for them. now, they say they'll go 22, calling for an eo the violent war in gaza. the calling it an interfaith pilgrimage. and it's happening at a number of different cities around the world. they say the 22 miles is aúrepresentation of the distance between gaza and the rafah crossing refugee camp, a relatively timely event here in administration. these

marchers say that this morning they plan to attend a shabbat service in oakland around nine 930, around the 9:00 era there and then. they plan to end the march at an islamic center of alameda that is set to end in about 12 hours from this point here. but you see them waving the flag here, all gathering right there along the waterfront. they say that they plan to do this again, to kind of call and get their messagec spout across to really the restf the bay area here. we'll be following them for the morning, letting you know where they are. and of course, spreading their message as well. we are live james torres, ktvu, fox two'm news. >> it doesn't look like the rain is keeping them from that march. thank you james and new this morning synagogues, mosques are still waiting on millions of dollars in security funding promised by the governor and state legislature. more than five months ago, a couple of weeks after hamas's attack on israel, the governor designated

$40 million in funding to increase security and police presence at places of worship in the state. no money has been sent to these organizations in the months since the newsom administration blamed the overwhelming number of governor's office says it should be announcing who will get the money next week. >> well, i took more than a year, but this morning, oakland's mayor has named a new police shengtao announced floyd mitchell will be the next police chief. yesterday mitchell comes from outside the department. he was one of the four finalists submitted by the police commission last month. the mayor says his experience and strategies to reduce crime catapulted him to the top of her list. she says she's glad with l in and she's confident the move will boost the morale in police. >> of course, he's coming to a new city, so we'll show him the ropes. we'll introduce him to key community leaders, we'll make sure that he has ample time to be a part of any sort of programing with rank and file to create that bond.

>> we know this is a very spdifficult job. it's notúa regular police chief job. there's a lot of different bosses. he has to answer to understanding the culture of the city, of the department. is goie him some time. >> mitchell was lubbock, texas,r years. prior to that, he was an officer in kansas city for more than 20 years. some community leaders in oakland think mitchell's experience in missouri will help them lead law enforcement in the city. others think he has his work cut out for him. >> it'll be he will be facing. there will not be basically any honeymoon period at all. so it'súgoing to be, very tough. >> he's got to get command and get control of the department itself, got to dealúwith the community itself, got to deal with the political machinations that exist within the city. but i think that we should give him a chance to do says mitchell wil be introduced to the public next week. he's expected to start as the chief sometime between late april and early may, and the

hundreds of thousands of students. financial aid applications, us education department said a vendor incorrectly calculated a financial aid formula for more than 200,000 students. that information was sent to colleges to help them prepare aid packages, but now needs to be recalculated. this all comes as the department works through a backlog of millions of other financial aid applications, and fast track isc warning to its users here in the bay area. >> transit officials say scammers are targeting drivers

mid 40s to mid 5ps. in addition to the wet weather, it's a cool storm. talking about the snow levels dropping right now. it looks like down to about 5000ft. we'll check in on the sierra here in just a moment. first the north bay where you can see scattered showers over areas like hillsborough, santa rosa. we've got some rain on i-80 for folks that need to be in and out of fairfield. there to the central bay, san ramon along 680, scattered showers reported there and over the santa cruz mountains. we have showers here. and as i talked about before, mount, in the santa cruz mountains, we have ben lowman. thatgs the area that has more than an inch of accumulation already into the sierra. snow levels look to be between 4 and 5000ft, and the advisories for travel continue here for the greater lake tahoe area until 11:00 this morning. for the west slope, i-80 as well as highway 50, it goes until tomorrow morning for us. we can continue our expect to see the scattered showers continue as spwell as the risk of thunderstorms there. so look at

police chief in oakland. mayor shengtao announced that she had picked floyd mitchell toc take the reins of her police department under federal oversi. he's expected to start in late april or early may. oakland's newúchief brings more than r5 years of law experience to the city coming to the bay area, floyd mitchell led the police department in lubbock, texas, from 2019 until september of last year. however, he resigned from that position in lubbock after the department had been criticized for an increasing number of unansweredw with a local news station, mitchell defended cutting dispatchers despite a report that found 30,000 911 calls were >> when we look at how thet& dispatch unit is ran in, cutting it from 9 to 7 based on the deployment makes no difference in regards to how the system would work. >> mitchell is stepping into a demanding position as oakland

zone. nothing could shake my to compete, and i don't know, i was just so focused the whole time. before i had won. i was just kind of some random gymnast from east bay, and then, you know, i was like, wow, if i can do this, what else can i do in my sport? >> buoyed by her stellar showing at nationals, mika was invited to a national team training camp last summer, getting coached by then being like, oh yeah, likend you're good was like, whoa, i am. her passion for the sport started at even knew what gymnastics was. her mom explains. >> she was bouncing off the couch, rolling off the couch, sometimes tumbling on her head. and we're just like, this is she was invited to join the team . >> and 14úyears later, here we are. >> and where that is, is training 35 hours a week while

still maintaining her status as an honor student at saint mary's college high school in albany. so how does she pull it off? >> lots of support. like, i've been very grateful for all of the help from my school from saint mary's. they've been really helpful working with me through the changes changes incs spschooling at home while she prepares for competitions. but like any elite athlete, great s does not come without sacrifice. >> it's a really hard balance to beúout there socially and to be doing high level gymnastics. >> my love of gymnastics is so strong that i've been able to make those trade offs and be like, i know it's going to pay off in the long run. and even if i'm going to miss out on something like in short, termel it's worth my long terme goal. >> so you've got your eye on the prize really? >> it hasn't always been smooth sailing. about five years ago, mika's love for gymnastics hit a rough patch at age 13. after spnearly ten years in the sport.

she was burned out. >> i had a lot of mental blocks, which is kind of like when you get scared of skills because gymnastics is a very, very mental sport. switched gyms and coaches, which was exactly what she needed. >> she was afraid of everything and she just was burnt out. didn't really love gymnastics and you dance in the corner. it's more contraction. >> coach lisa of east bay gymnastics in concord, where mika trains. >> or when you step, it's here and go. >> as a former gymnast herself, she could empathize with what slow and i listened because she had a lot of anxiety. i recognized all that stuff underneath, and then we slowly unpacked that stuff underneath. >> moving to east bay has been so magical because my coach, lisa, has really helped me rediscover the love of gymnastics. >> look around the corner that love and hard work has taken her spto new heights, including a
