bridges and whether they could withstand a similar collision. presidential candidate robert kennedy jr, announcing his bay area native that a bay area native named nicole shanahan will be his running mate. he did so at a rally today in oakland and north bay school board president is facing a recall amid an uptick in school violence. >> this is ktvu, fox two news at 730. >> good evening everyone. i'm heather holmes, and we begin tonight with the collapse of that bridge in baltimore and how it's renewing focus on the structural integrity of bridges, really all across the country and here in the bay area. investigators say a cargo ship overnight lost power and collided with the francis scott key bridge in baltimore, plunging that span right into the river. the ship's crew issued a mayday call moments before impact, allowing police to limit vehicle traffic onto the bridge. however over six construction workers were on the bridge filling potholes at the

time, and they did not get off the bridge in time. the ntsb announcing late today that those employees are still unaccounted for and are presumed dead. back here in the bay area, there have been two incidents in recent years involving a ship colliding with the bay bridge. ktvu tom vacar spoke with some of the world's top experts today about the safety measures in place on bridges here in the bay area. >> in 2013, the 751ft long overseas reymar empty oil tanker glanced off the fender bumpers of one of the bay bridges western span towers in 2007, the 902 foot long cosco busan, a container ship, also glanced off as well. the hard but glancing blows to the fender bumper systems at the tower bases kept the ships from damaging the bridge towers. bart ney speaks for caltrans. the owner and caretaker of the bridge. >> all of our bridge columns are surrounded by extremely robust, protection systems, that that

absorb the energy of the ship before it actually can touch the bridge. our fenders actually do more damage to the ship than the ship is done to the bridge in the past, but unlike baltimore, neither bay collision was a direct hit to a tower. >> retired uc berkeley engineering professor and now consultant robert bea has built many bridges and consulted on damaged ones worldwide. bea does not agree with caltrans. our bay bridges would be in the same trouble. >> what kind of speed are we talking about, do you think ten knots now in the case of this other one, it was going between 7 and 8 knots. >> would that still result in serious damage to the bridge? yes, definitely. >> either failure or near failure. >> caltrans adds that the bay bridges are stronger so they can resist earthquakes. the seismic systems would always also dampen some of the impact. peter yanov is an internationally renowned earthquake engineer. >> the earthquake loads are very

different. they cause the structure to be beefier overall. now if you hit it with something too big, obviously anything will fall down. >> ships like the cosco busan are older, smaller, and far lighter than today's behemoths that carry more than four times as many containers. giannas says we should rethink protecting the bay bridges due to this huge change. >> what has changed to change our protection? >> the golden gate bridge district writes the golden gate bridge has perhaps the most robust ship collection protection of any bridge on the west coast. one towers on land, the other surrounded by a massive concrete ring full of sand, deeper than any ship bottom tom vacar ktvu fox two news. >> and earlier today on the four, we spoke with former fema coordinator mark devoe on what the investigation into that collision there in baltimore will look like. >> the ship has a black box in it, much like an aircraft, you

know, consumer type of aircraft. so they're going to try and delve through that, pull out any data that they can. i'm sure they've already talked to the pilots and that firm being used by those people who actually board the ships, and they're hired by the harbor master to be able to come in and out of that port. that's their specialization. they do this 100 hundreds of times of years, trying to get folks through that waterway. so they're going to try and talk to all of those. >> nouveau says the investigation will be challenging, especially since so much of the bridge is underwater for more on the baltimore bridge collapse, be sure to log on to our website ktvu.com. new at 730 tonight, an investigation is underway in santa rosa after a pedestrian was struck and killed by a car. it happenedt about 615 this morning in downtown.sts crossing avenue near orchard street when she was hit. the driver of the vehicle reportedly stayed at the and is cooperating wit police. there is a csswalk in the area

, but police haven't yet said whether the pedestrian was in that crosswalk when she was hit. the city of san francisco today released its first report on the crash in the west portal neighborhood that killed a family of four. the report by sfmta says the design of the intersection is not to blame, and said it had undergone several improvements designed to protect pedestrians, including high visibility sidewalks. the initial investigation found that 78 year old mary fong lao was speeding on the wrong side of the road before crashing into the bus stop and hitting the victims. she has been released from police custody. district attorney brooke jenkins says her office is waiting for more information before making any charging decisions. firefighters in san jose today rescued one person that was trapped in a fire at an abandoned home. crews were called to fourth street and saint john street not far from saint james park, at about 1140 this morning. firefighters say the fire spread to another nearby home and that both structures were destroyed. crews believe that homeless people were inside the abandoned home

at the time of the fire. firefighters rescued one person who was not hurt. the two alarm fire was under control within about an hour. san francisco supervisors introducing new legislation today to ban toxic chemicals from firefighting gear . lawmakers and firefighters held a rally on the steps of city hall this afternoon. the first of its kind ordinance would ban the use of pfas forever. chemicals in firefighters, protective clothing. those chemicals are used to make gear that resists heat, water and other hazards. but they've also been increasing be linked to cancer and other serious health effects. the san francisco fire department says it's seen more than 300 cancer related deaths since 2006. >> we can't control the cancerous chemicals that firefighters breathe and brave every time they respond to a fire. but we can control the protective equipment we are armoring them with. >> a recent state law has restricted the use of pfas in food packaging, and the epa

wants to limit the amount allowed in drinking water to the lowest possible levels. new at 730 tonight, the california department of corrections says an inmate on san quentin's death row has died. prison officials say that 65 year old richard dean turner died of natural causes early saturday morning at an outside medical facility. the marin county coroner will determine the exact cause of death. turner was on death row for a 1980 double murder in san bernardino county, and a codefendant were convicted of shooting and killing a married couple in their late 70s inside their home. independent presidential candidate robert f kennedy jr today announcing his running mate at a news conference right here in oakland. >> that is why i'm so proud to introduce to you the next vice president of the united states. my fellow lawyer, a brilliant scientist, technologist, a fierce warrior mom, nicole shanahan.

>> and nicole shanahan is a 38 year old tech attorney who grew up in oakland and is a major donor to kennedy's campaign. she has never held elected office in california. kennedy's supporters have launched the we the people party to try to get him on the ballot in order though to be successful, the party has to get 75,000 people in the state to reregister with that party. a north bay school board president facing a possible recall coming up. why some parents say they want to see new leadership, plus never been on a plane before. >> so this is like something crazy. i've never even been in an airport. >> a group of oakland high school students took off today with passports in hand for the trip of a lifetime. still ahead, details on where the students are headed and their mission to bridge cultures. >> and the bay area weather wrapping up a very nice tuesday out there. tomorrow we will bring in some more shower chances, especiall later in the day.

was elected to the board back in 2018. a group of parents this week reportedly filed a notice of intent to recall medina, citing ongoing concerns about campus safety. the group wants resource officers back on campus . medina, though, supported eliminating campus police officers due to alleged unfair treatment of students of color. the recall comes amid an uptick in violence on santa rosa school campuses, including a deadly stabbing at montgomery high school a year ago. a group of students from oakland's castle

mont. high school embarked on a trip of a lifetime this afternoon. they're heading abroad to asia, and for some, it is the very first time they've been out of the bay area. ktvu crystal bailey joins us now with more on this exciting story for these students. crystal. >> well, heather, the kids took off from sfo and are on their way now to tokyo, japan. they'll spend two weeks abroad, but i caught up with them before their flight to learn more about what this means to them, to see the world. these castlemont high school students are heading across the pacific to asia, sporting matching jackets for this year's theme, stop aapi hate. >> this was a club that started out in my classroom. it was students who really just wanted to travel. >> for the last six years, the pacific bridge club has created a space for east oakland kids to learn about different cultures. described as the bridge between east oakland and the rest of the world. we've been to turkey, china, you know, egypt, thailand, costa rica. >> we started off by like

helping people in our community, like food banks and, you know, volunteering at other places and things like that. >> and then we take what we practice here all over the world, and then we take what we learn there. back here last week, nearly 30 japanese students visited east oakland, shadowing castlemont high school students as part of the pacific bridge club. that makes a friend in another country. that's crazy. >> now it's time for 15 castlemont students to return the favor. the kids will be spending 14 days traveling across japan, taiwan, and the philippines, volunteering and doing a number of cultural events, including visiting the kids they saw last week from japan. they say that some of these students have never even left the bay area. >> i've never been on a plane before, so this is like something crazy. i've never even been in an airport. >> i'm the first to travel out of the country. in my family, it's a trip that costs more than $40,000, but it's paid for by fundraising, sponsorships and donations. >> also, real quick your passports. and as they get ready for their adventure, they say

they'll make memories to last a lifetime. >> i'm most looking forward to philippines because we're going to these islands and i'm looking forward to further beaches, that's something i'm really excited for because i heard that the water is really clear. i'm equally excited for both japan and the philippines to try out different foods and see how the culture is out there, and the flight took off just before 5:00 this evening. >> all the kids i spoke to said the program helps teach them responsibility, respect for others, and it takes them out of their shell. now the teacher, mr. guy, tells me he wants to expand the program to other schools in oakland. crystal bailey, ktvu, fox two news. >> crystal, thank you. a group of engineering students at a private school in morgan hill has achieved something remarkable. the nanosatellite, built by students at oakwood school, has been selected by nasa to launch to the international space station. >> we've worked very hard the past three years on making a proposal, designing our mission,

designing components like our structure and electrical, all like our whole satellite. it's been a whole process, and we're very honored that our hard work has been acknowledged and that we were chosen. >> we're planning on reaching, mentoring, and inspiring as many younger students as we can with our project, and we hope to reach all of them. >> the oakwood team was the only k through 12 school to be chosen by nasa. the other teams were universities or from universities. so quite the achievement for these students as well. okay, time for us to talk about our weather and pretty nice day out there. a nice day to maybe enjoy lunch outside because you're probably not going to be able to do that tomorrow, right? >> yeah. i think you want to you know, maximize these dry days because we have we have some more rain headed our way. now. the timing is always a challenge, right? it's never like raining off from sunrise to sunset. so we'll try to fine tune that time, okay? >> you're good at that. >> we'll make the attempt. thank you. but yeah, highs today was actually a nice day. as heather mentioned, you can see

temperatures mainly in the mid topper 60s in the 50s out toward pacifica san jose 65 degrees. there's a weak system on the way for tomorrow, especially by this time tomorrow wednesday evening. and then into thursday. the possibility of some showers and then a stronger storm that's set to move into the area on friday. you can see those kind of reflected in the rainfall expectations, those numbers jumping up quite a bit now in terms of tomorrow, the main activity for at least the first half of the day will be up in the north bay, with the possibility of some showers up there, and then later in the day we're going to bump up those chances, especially after six, seven, 8:00 tomorrow evening. so that's the main timing of the next front coming on board. here's the satellite. as you can pick out in the pacific a defined front here. nice circulation. the main impacts will be up to the north of the bay area. as we come in closer right now we have clear to partly cloudy skies. will definitely cloud things up. but take a look at this beautiful sunset. as you can see, we're just have some scattered high clouds out there. current numbers in the upper 50s to the lower 60s. concord checking in 60 degrees and san jose in the upper 50s. 58 tomorrow morning.

definitely some clouds moving in and the possibility of a sprinkle or a light shower. this is really not the main storm moving in, but just a lot of clouds and a lot of moisture in the best shower chance. as we showed you up in the north bay. so here's the storm track kind of racing across the pacific. we have two systems to track this first front and then another one out here, way out here in the pacific. so nice today. showers developed later in the day wednesday into thursday. and then possibly that stronger storm by friday. that could linger into saturday in the sierra. this will be a snow producer. so i know it's still spring time, but we're still talking about winter storm warnings and the next one begins 11 a.m. wednesday until 11 a.m. thursday, and snowfall could be around 10 to 20in. so here's the forecast model you can see tomorrow morning wednesday, lots of clouds out there. there's not a lot of rain to show you, but the chance of a sprinkle or a light shower. even at 1:00, the main chance is focused up in the north bay. still 5:00, maybe some scattered rain showers. it's only a chance, but then things really bump up in coverage by wednesday evening. 9:00 thursday a sun cloud mix

with maybe a few showers that could quickly move across the bay area. so the main window with this with the next system will be wednesday evening. highs for tomorrow will be in the upper 50s to the lower 60s. here's a look ahead. your five day forecast. that second storm wants to move in by friday. rain and wind could be tracking some showers into saturday and then by easter. for easter sunday, we are expecting mostly cloudy skies with a slight chance of a leftover sprinkle. but in terms of the main rain bands that should be moving in before easter sunday. >> okay, nice timing that way. thank you so much mark. appreciate it. still ahead tonight at 730, public health officials issuing a warning about an outbreak of whooping cough. the high school where most of the cases are being reported. also ahead tonight, nurses at a contra costa county hospital walk the picket line. we'll tell you about the issues that they say are putting patient safety in jeopardy. and we'll also have the response from the hospital and another mudslide similar to this one, causing major problems in the south bay, leading to the closure of a part of highway nine. why? caltrans says

and most of those cases are linked to an outbreak at tamalpais high school there in mill valley. doctors say that whooping cough can spread from person to person through droplets in the air. there is a vaccine, also called pertussis. that's what whooping cough is also called. it's part of the tdap vaccine, which is the routine series of shots required for all students in california public schools. union nurses picketed at john muir health and concord this morning. the nurses say they have serious concerns about staff levels and workplace violence. they are calling for relief staffing so that nurses can take meal and rest breaks without leaving patients unmonitored. they are also asking for a voice in preventing

workplace violence. john muir health tells ktvu they're proposing new contract language on workplace violence prevention and are making significant investments in safety. they also say that negotiations are set to resume tomorrow. new at 730 tonight, a portion of a south bay highway is closed. it's all due to debris from a recent mudslide. i want to show you now what it looked like. what part of highway nine looked like earlier this month? and this large mudslide covered most of the road. caltrans says crews are working to clean up another slide in the same area from sanborn road to redwood gulch road, near saratoga. they are also working to stabilize a hillside, and there's no estimate when that stretch of highway will reopen because officials say another round of wet weather this week could cause additional problems. coming up tonight. details on the improvements one east bay city i business. it's not a nine-to-five proposition. it's all day and into the night. it's all the things that keep this world turning.

years there on city streets. those new speed bumps are and stop signs are located at four different intersections around town. they include viking drive at both odin and ruth drives, and pleasant hill road and paradise lane, and at oak park boulevard and wendell lane. pleasant hill police sharing these photos on social media and urging drivers to be mindful of pedestrians in these areas. okay
