an historic night for bay area sports fans. the women's professional soccer team bay fc, plays its home opener and fans couldn't be more excited. they're gonna do great. >> they're gonna score like a bunch of goals. >> they're gonna win. they're gonna win. absolutely. they're gonna win for sure. >> gotta love the confidence. it is a night. bay area soccer fans have had marked on their calendars for months now. a sellout crowd packing paypal park to watch bay fc take their home field for the first time. good evening. on this saturday, i'm cristina rendon. bay fc is one of two new teams to join the national women's soccer league this year. ktvu zac sos was there for the game. he joins us live down in san jose at paypal park. and zach, the game not really going bay fc's way tonight, but fans still seem pretty upbeat. >> yeah. and how could they not

years. the deal would also require the team to pay a $97 million extension fee and asks the team to take over the cost of switching the playing field from baseball to soccer. for the oakland roots, the a's current lease at the coliseum ends after the season. both sides are expected to meet on tuesday in san francisco. the giants are walking back an announcement earlier this week, the team had told fans that tiles, some of them, had purchased many of them in memoriam of late, family members will no longer rest on the walkways of mccovey cove outside oracle park, as ktvu bailey o'carroll shows us the team now reversing course. >> for years, mccovey cove was lined with nearly 6000 tiles, each one slightly different from the next. but many of them in honor of loved ones who loved giants baseball more than anything. now they're gone and likely won't return. >> i feel like they took something from us so it's kind of frustrating. >> we were hoping to take our son or nephew and niece to the

tiles away to honor his memory and really pass down the fandom to the next generation. >> denise nelson and patrick mccartney both have tiles and memories of loved ones. back in 2020, the tiles were moved when construction of the mission rock project started. then on thursday, those who purchased tiles nearly two decades ago received an email from the giants saying in part as noted previously, the tiles in their original state could not be salvaged during construction of the new park. a digital version of your tile message from the original park will be showcased via a kiosk nearby. the mccovey statue. >> it feels like they're taking something from us. we thought it was going to be there forever and mccovey cove, you know, we knew exactly where it was and we'd visit it when we'd go to the ballpark. our children, as young children, took pictures next to it, and we thought someday, you know, our grandchildren would take pictures next to it and so on. so, you know, it's sad. that was nelson's reaction prior to finding out the giants have reversed course. >> in an email to ktvu, the team

said, quote, we have heard from our passionate and loyal fans and we will not be moving forward with the kiosk. we will explore multiple options that will work in the new park to showcase the tile messages. neither nelson or mccartney said the decision would keep them from giants games this season, but they say they expect the team to find a better way to honor their forever giants, redo the tiles, reincorporate them. >> maybe they're a walkway or a pathway of some sort within the new park. >> 20 years ago, my uncle was lamenting that it felt like the sport was becoming too commercial and prioritizing business interests. and then, you know, 20 years later, a tile and his memory is now no more because of real estate development. >> now, all of this comes as opening day at oracle park is just around the corner. it'll take place on april 5th, when the giants will host the san diego padres. bailey o'carroll, ktvu, fox two news. >> a man is now in custody in the north bay after santa rosa police say they caught him

trying to steal a catalytic converter from a stolen truck. police posting these images online saying an alert patrol officer spotted two men near this pickup truck in the parking lot of nagasawa park this morning. the officer says one man was under the truck holding a sawzall tool and trying to cut off the catalytic converter. both men were detained, though one was released after being interviewed. 33 year old michael mcgarvey, who was allegedly under the truck, is now facing two felony charges and being held at the sonoma county jail. another bay area freeway shooting to tell you about linked to a case of road rage. this happened in hayward on wednesday, around three in the afternoon on northbound interstate 880 near alvarado-niles road. chp says the victim called to report his car was shot at by a man in a green toyota sedan. the victim only sustained minor injuries. chp was able to track down a suspect within 24 hours, search that person's home, and seized two guns and ammunition. anyone with information on the road rage case is asked to contact hayward chp. san francisco fire crews battled a fire overnight

that burned vehicles and then spread to several buildings. the firefighters were called to the fire at y street and julian avenue in the city's mission district. this video, posted on social media by the fire department, shows firefighters using extinguishers and water hoses to put out the flames in several cars and on balconies in a neighboring building. firefighter say at least nine people were forced to evacuate. two people had minor injuries. there's no word yet on how this fire started. firefighters in the east bay were called to a fire inside of a supermarket. a viewer sent us this video of the fire inside of the max grocery store in san pablo, contra costa firefighters got the call just after 830 last night. the store was evacuated and firefighters say the sprinkler system was was activated and put the fire out. no one was injured. the cause of this fire, also under investigation. oh, the sound of hail coming down in redwood city

this afternoon. the small chunks of ice seen in several communities along the peninsula. joining us now is meteorologist mark tamayo, who is tracking our current conditions. hi, mark. >> hi there. christina. yeah, some very active weather today. we had flood flood advisories and also severe thunderstorm warnings posted for portions of the south bay. there's some strong thunderstorms moved across the bay area. take a look at the rainfall totals over the past couple of days. felton approaching 2.5in of rainfall. santa rosa, san carlos over an inch. san francisco 0.69in. oakland 0.47. look at this active radar all afternoon, especially late this afternoon and into the evening hours. some lightning strikes detected throughout that time frame. you can see out toward the morgan hill area and then out toward the san carlos area. earlier this evening. here's a closer look at that radar activity throughout the late afternoon and into the evening hours, you can see what happens during the five and 6:00 hour. just a lot of rain, a lot of thunderstorm activity as a lightning strikes, as we show you the maps right now, there's not a lot of coverage. still, the possibility of a few showers and portions of

the south bay right now. but as we expand the view, we are showing you the system offshore out in the pacific. there's that circulation it is tracking to the south. and as a result, as we head into your easter, we should have improving conditions for your sunday. we'll have more on that. also, your five day forecast with some more changes in our overall weather pattern all coming up in a little bit. >> mark. thank you. a driver died in san francisco today after tir car rolled over in a multi-car crash. this happened around 1030 this morning near diamond and clipper streets in the noe valley neighborhood, the chronicle repor. the driver was ejected from their car. three other vehicles were damaged. it's not clear how the crash happened. and in san mateo, a person behind the wheel of a tesla looked to be asleep yesterday while speeding down highway 101. the driver was seen by a high school lacrosse team. the team's coach told ktvu, quote, we were all truly stunned at what we were witnessing. i don't care how reliable tesla may claim their autopilot is. in san jose, mayor matt meehan joined city workers to clean up an encampment in alviso with

right now, chain controls are in effect along a section of the route. this storm, the latest of what's been a snowy winter for the greater lake tahoe area, carolina estrada spoke with drivers today about their experiences traveling in these conditions. >> another snowstorm hits the sierra, creating dangerous road conditions for travelers on interstate 80. >> we saw some chain control signs, but we weren't expecting this. >> not at all. actually, i'm really surprised. >> like what's going on for more than an hour, caltrans stopped traffic at cisco grove due to a crash delaying hundreds of drivers like curtis tran and his family. >> we're headed to mount rose. we got an airbnb and we're just trying to get there, but we got stopped. >> his kids taking the opportunity to enjoy the snow. >> are you going to have to take this extra foot chains on? all right. >> chains are snow. tires were also required for travelers. tran says he was aware of the

conditions and came prepared. >> we have snow chains, snow socks. >> we're ready to go. >> the heavy snowfall caused icy roads and low visibility. caltrans vehicles constantly working to maintain the roads. >> once we start seeing accumulation of snow on the roadway, the plows are going to be out there. they're moving it off along the shoulder, keeping the highway clear and open. >> caltrans says the best thing to do is to avoid travel. but for those headed to the sierra, the advice is drive slow, safely and definitely come prepared. >> pack food, water. be prepared to wait a long time for the tran family. >> it's worth the wait. are you as excited to go to the snow? yeah >> this latest round of spring weather not just limited to northern california right now, a flood watch is in effect for much of the southern part of the state, areas just south of los angeles, in what's referred to as the south bay. pounded by

heavy rain today along the coast, waves crested at over eight feet. further inland, residents concerned that all of this rain could lead to mudslides. >> very much so. and it's not just this area, but it's the basically the entire street. >> a flood watch is in effect for much of southern california through sunday. >> and in weather for us are still talking about a few lingering showers out there. of course, out toward the sierra. it has been a big time snow producer taking a look here. this was the scene from the west shore earlier today. winter storm warning continues until 11:00 tomorrow morning, and we're showing you some of the snowfall totals over the past seven days. and really adding up around 26 to 30 7 to 38in up in the mountains. of course, tomorrow, easter back here in the bay area. and we are expecting some changing conditions out there. a cool start tomorrow morning. partly cloudy skies into the afternoon into the afternoon. there is a slight chance of an isolated shower, but the main storm will be moving out to the south. here

is that circulation in which produced the showers and the thunderstorms and heavy downpours for portions of the bay area today. other areas just saw some sunshine. actually not too much happening across parts of other parts of the bay area, but once again, that active radar, all those lightning strikes late earlier this afternoon and into the evening hours. and right now, as you can see, the radar coverage, there's not a lot to show you, but some activity kind of moving into portions of the south bay. here's our live camera tonight. looking out toward the out toward the bay bridge. and it's fairly quiet for right now. still some lingering clouds and current numbers in the upper 40s to the lower 50s. concord 52, san jose 54 degrees and overnight. it will be dry tomorrow morning. to start things off for your sunday, partly cloudy and cool. lots of 40s for your sunday morning. so here's the forecast model. does bring in some clouds tomorrow at 7:00 and then into the afternoon hours. a sun cloud mix. there is a slight chance of an isolated sprinkle or a light shower by 3 or 4:00 tomorrow afternoon, but the main weather story, as we are expecting at least maybe a sun cloud mix and improving

conditions for tomorrow and a bit of a warming a warming trend in the five day forecast. we'll have the full update in a little bit. >> all right mark, thank you. the city of sunnyvale will apply for grants to fund a cost effective rideshare option considered more convenient than public transit. the city council unanimously voted tuesday to partner with silicon valley hopper. it's a rideshare service that costs less than $5 a ride in cities like cupertino and santa clara. the city is seeking money from two grants, one from the environmental protection agency that could cover the program's full cost. the other, a state grant, would cover half the cost in the city, would pay the balance. sunnyvale officials hope this pilot program will allow students disadvantage residents and senior citizens more mobility. caltrans says it plans to fully reopen the scenic highway one by late spring. since january of last year, a 500,000 500,000 cubic yard landslide closed off part of the highway between the esalen institute and limekiln state park. crews have been working to

repair the area while responding to more slides since then. thursday, caltrans announced that to reconnect the two parts of the road, repairs have to be completed at paul slide, reagan slide and dolan point, and some of those projects might be done by may 1st. elected leaders are weighing in on the oakland airport, possibly changing its name. right now, the airport has an official name of metropolitan oakland international airport, but the port of oakland will vote at its april 11th board meeting on whether to change the name to san francisco bay oakland international airport. the port of oakland's president supports the change, but state senator scott wiener coming out in opposition. he released this statement saying, i love oakland, but oakland is oakland. it's not san francisco. oakland's airport should not be cutting and pasting san francisco international airport into its name. please find another way to turn things around. tonight's powerball jackpot rolling over to monday night. no one matched all six numbers drawn tonight. those numbers are 12, 13, 33, 50 and

one of the city's most competitive high schools right now. public and private school students take different tests at different times to be able to get into lowell high school. the new proposal would have both public and private school students admissions based on their scores on the star test taken in the winter of eighth grade, public school students already take the test, so private school students will have to take the exam in the evening or on a weekend. the school board will consider this change in policy at an april meeting. harvard university is seeing a decline in enrollment

after recent controversies. the school has experienced a fall off of about 5% in admission applications. applications were down about 3000 compared to last year. the university experienced a wave of bad publicity last fall over failures to condemn anti-semitism from the hamas-israel war, as well as the resignation of its president over allegations of plagiarism. the nation's only nonprofit book distributor, based in berkeley, has ceased operations after more than five decades of business. small press distribution announced its decision to close over declining sales and loss of grant support. the photos taken show the company's now vacant warehouse in north berkeley. spd was founded in 1969, distributing books for hundreds of publishers over the years. the closure is raising concerns among those publishers looking to get independent books in the hands of readers. san francisco mayor london breed announced the city received an $8 million grant from the federal government to improve the buchanan street mall pedestrian walkway. mayor breed says the

renovation project will add lighting, landscaping, and information kiosks to the outdoor street mall. other additions will include a performance stage, seating areas, a picnic and a barbecue area, and multiple playgrounds. work is expected to start this fall. one of bart's board members is stepping down, creating an open seat to represent the east bay. director john mcpartland's resignation was announced on thursday. he cited family matters as his reason for stepping down from the elected position. excuse me. portland has served on the board since he was elected in november of 2008. the board might use a majority vote to appoint a director to the district five seat by may 27th, if not the alameda county board of supervisors might appoint someone by june 27th. they would serve the rest of his terms, which would end december 6th in the middle east. the us military has again dropped tons of desperately needed humanitarian aid to the people of gaza. members of the us air force

loaded containers of humanitarian aid onto planes at an air base in qatar yesterday, before being dropped over the gaza strip. the united nations says the war between israel and hamas has displaced about 80% of the population and pushed hundreds of thousands of people to the brink of famine. the airdrops are part of an international effort to work around the extreme difficulties faced by those trying to get aid into the area by truck, the tons of, aid that's dropped every day varies on the day to day. >> for the c-17, the only, we dropped over 100,000 pounds of aid into gaza, the totals are well into the almost 1 million pounds of aid that we have dropped. total other partners are nato allies such as the uk and germany, as well as singapore. just came in recently to help. and of course, the jordanians are helping as well. >> the air drops came a day after the top united nations

whh si of the river. truckee fire protection district also says at least onpers died. they report it was a single engine. turboprop airplane. police say there are no threats to any structures and there are not any road closures at this time. it is unclear how many people were on board that aircraft. now to the bridge collapse in maryland. there is expected to be a push for congress to pay for part or all of a new francis scott key bridge in baltimore. fox news chad pergram explains how politics could play a role in the rebuilding. there's an immediate demand to rebuild the bridge. >> the city of baltimore or the east coast, and the american economy demanded it. >> this is not just going to impact maryland. this is impacting the farmer in kentucky. it's impacting the auto dealer in michigan. >> the president promises help. >> it's my intention that federal government will pay for the entire cost of reconstructing that bridge. and i expect the congress to support my effort. >> but no one knows how long this will take. it's a heavy

lift. >> it's going to take some time. >> that bridge took five years to build. we don't yet have an estimate on how long it'll take to rebuild. >> in 2007, the i 35 west bridge in minneapolis plunged into the mississippi river, killing 13 people and injuring 145. congress responded at breakneck speed. >> h.r. 3311, a bill to authorize additional funds for emergency repairs and reconstruction of the interstate i 35 bridge, located in minneapolis, minnesota that collapsed on august 1st, 2007. >> the house voted 421 to nothing. just days after the collapse, green lighting a quarter of $1 billion for a new bridge. the senate okayed the bill unanimously. >> i think everyone in this chamber in the country and the world is aware of the tragedy that befell our state. >> the new bridge opened an astonishing 13 months after the collapse. today, lawmakers hope they can replicate that speed to reconstruct the baltimore bridge. gop maryland

representative andy harris cited minnesota demanding the government sideline in environmental and regulatory burdens to accelerate this rebuild. but we're in a different political climate today than 2007. money for the bridge would be an extra appropriation. congress struggled just to avoid a government shutdown. that means money for a new bridge could be a political fight on capitol hill. chad pergram, fox news. >> the oklahoma department of transportation says highway us 59 has been reopened at the arkansas river south of sallisaw. it had been closed to traffic after a barge struck a bridge earlier today. the agency says engineers have inspected the structure and found it safe for traffic. it was not immediately known what caused the barge to hit the bridge. no injuries have been reported. the world's largest electric car maker is hitting some speed bumps in forecasted car sales, private banking firm wedbush securities says delivery estimates of tesla vehicles has

strikes, and also hail. this was video from the belmont area earlier this afternoon into the evening hours. and look at all those hailstones. so yeah, an active weather day out there. but things will be changing tomorrow for your easter. some scattered clouds. first thing tomorrow morning. fair skies into the afternoon and then a sun cloud mix into the afternoon hours by 4:00. here you can pick out that circulation moving to the south of monterey bay. this is definitely impacting southern california as well as some heavy rainfall as we come in closer to the bay area radar, you can see some of the activity out toward the sierra. they will continue to pick up some snowfall off and on into sunday. and you see all the lightning strikes we were tracking earlier today, especially in the south bay and portions of the peninsula late this afternoon and into the evening hours. the radar is fairly quiet right now. there is still a chance of a few leftover showers for tonight into early tomorrow morning, but here is our live camera looking out toward the golden gate bridge right now. current numbers in the upper 40s in santa rosa. some 50s for san francisco, oakland and san jose. 54 degrees tomorrow morning to start things

off for easter sunday, we are expecting partly cloudy skies and temperatures in the 40s, but today's storm you can see it positioned out here. this is moving to the south, so that will be the key change that will improve our weather somewhat. if you want to get outside for tomorrow, this area of low pressure something we'll be watching those as wraparound moisture that could move in into the afternoon hours that will bring in off and on clouds, and the slight chance of an isolated shower that could pop up by mid to late afternoon on your sunday. here's the forecast model. we'll put this into motion. you can see what happens tomorrow morning. there is a batch of clouds around here. this is 7:00 tomorrow morning. not expecting much in the way of rainfall. there's a slight chance whenever you have this moisture out there and then into the afternoon hours. 1:00. we're looking okay. and then you can see what happens by 4:00. those pop up pop up showers could develop. so something we'll be watching closely by mid to late afternoon on sunday. and then we finally get a chance to get outside for monday with lots of sunshine that will continue into tuesday, with maybe some shower chances into later in the week,
