>> claudine, good morning to you. and it, of course dates back to 1923. the hill behind me is now back to just a normal hiking hill that we'll see a number of walkers and hikers going and doing that this morning. it's no longer the stage for an easter mass, but here's how it starts. every year folks go up there very early in the morning, around 6:00 am. they'll take a look over, see that sunrise with the sun rising above the bay, the east bay hills, as well as the city of san francisco. then they walk up over to that enormous cross, more than 100ft tall, to worship together. now in its long history, there have been moments where thousands of people made the hike and worshiped together, most notably during world war two, where it was said about 50,000 people attended a single ceremony. it's a nondenominational mass, which means anyone is welcome and it brings in people from the bay area, from parts of california and even further out, everyone from every neighborhood, every part of the city and beyond.
