box two. the owner of a clothing store in oakland in disbelief after a thief ransacks her store on easter weekend. she wants the city to do more to help businesses like hers from being targeted. >> they know they can just commit crimes and get away with it. like they can violate us and it's okay like they know. >> the clothing store owner says she is facing thousands of dollars in lost merchandise and damage, and the whole thing was caught on camera. good evening. this sunday, i'm cristina rendon and i'm julie julie haener, the criminal, helping himself to handmade items, even using the store's own suitcases to carry out the loot. >> ktvu zac sos spoke with the owner today. he joins us now live in oakland. zach, what is she telling you? >> well, right now she says she's really still just trying to process everything from a business standpoint emotionally as well. we're talking, as you

mentioned, thousands of dollars in handmade items gone, many of which she designed herself. she says she was on her way to an easter morning church service when her phone rang and she found out her store had been turned upside down. >> yes. and this is just so disappointing. i can't believe this is happening to us. >> taylor j filming the moment she arrived at her downtown oakland clothing store, easter sunday, to shattered glass strewn across the floor. >> and this was empty. he emptied that shelf. he emptied that shelf. and then i went and looked on the camera captured at around 530 in the morning, casually helping himself to thousands of dollars worth of merchandise at the taylor j. >> collection, purses, dresses, and other items, many of which were hand designed by the owner. >> i just felt violated. it was just traumatic. like it's already been really hard just being a business owner in oakland, having like physical locations. and so just knowing that someone came into a space that we pay for, that we put all our energy or time and money and life into. it just felt terrible

watching in tears at the time what the thief did next. >> only adding salt to the wound . after looting the store, the man coming back for seconds, he took two of the suitcases and filled them up with inventory too, and stole our stuff with our own suitcases. the burglar also taking off with the store's computer system. taylor now facing what she estimates to be at least $20,000 in damage and stolen items. >> it's terrible. this is already a really emotional day for me. for one, my nephew died a year ago, and the last time we were with him was on easter sunday. so my family is already, you know, very like emotional day. and then we were going to church and then this happens. >> taylor's store, just the latest to be targeted on her broadway block. two different bakeries also boarded up her message to city leadership. >> my message is to help us out, stop this. like if you want our city to grow, to thrive and not die, you have to take it serious that businesses we are, we build, we create, the community. we are keeping the economy going. and if we are suffering and we can't survive, what

happens to our city? >> and taylor says she's really just been overwhelmed by the support she's been seeing from the community, from customers. a fundraiser has been set up to help her cover some of the costs of those damages. those stolen items we've posted a link to it on ktvu.com. julie nice to see strangers coming together to do what they can t help. >> zach. thank you. well, berkeley police say gfire erupted near the cal campus, and that led to a high-speed chase onto highway 24. police say it all started at about three this morning, when thewnerf a kia confronted car burglars near walnut and delaware, about a block from campus, and then shots could be heard. but aprently no one was hit. a berkeley officer chased the suspects in a honda, as they reportedly drove 100 miles an hour on highway 24 into oakland. police say that the officers eventually lost the car near sycamore and west. a man is now in custody accused of stabbing another man. san francisco

police were called to a stabbing near ocean and lee avenues at about nine this morning. that's near the city college of san francisco. officers say that's where they found a man who had been stabbed. video from citizen app shows the scene. detectives say that the victim is expected to recover. the suspect was arrested, but it's still not clear what led up to that attack. >> a section of one of california's most iconic roads is now closed due to a rock slide, caltrans says saturday afternoon. a slip out near the rocky creek bridge damaged the southbound lanes of highway one. caltrans had closed a part of highway one from palo colorado to just south of limekiln state park. that's about a 45 mile stretch state officials say as many as 1600 people may stuck. it may be stuck in a closed section of road convoys will lead essential travelers through this stretch tomorrow from eight in the morning until four in the afternoon. it's unclear when the section will be reopened. carpool lanes in california will soon be reserved solely for

carpools, right now, carpool lanes allow cars with two or more people inside, and also allow cars with maroon, green, and yellow stickers. those decals are for clean air vehicles. california has started allowing clean air cars to use carpool lanes back in 1999, but the dmv says that starting in 2025, they will no longer be allowed. the move comes after governor gavin newsom signed an executive order back in 2020, requiring all new cars and passenger trucks sold in the state to be zero emission vehicles by 2035. >> the weather cooperated in most places around the bay area today for easter egg hunts, brunches and picnics, and that includes for a special easter celebration in san francisco. ktvu alice wirth shows us why this year's inclusive easter in the park has even more meaning. >> thousands turned out for the 45th annual easter in the park here at mission dolores. it's also the 45th anniversary of the sisters of perpetual indulgence. in 1979, there were only four.

>> go! family headed out to tilden park today for an easter egg hunt and brunch with the easter bunny. >> dozens of children swarming the field there outside the tilden merry go round. many of them had their own bunny ears ready for the occasion, and it was smiles all around for those kids as they collected a basket full of eggs before the hunt, families enjoyed a buffet style pancake breakfast and took some holiday photos. >> well, about 100 people hiked up to the highest point in san francisco at sunrise today. it's all part of a 100 year old easter tradition. a crowd of worshipers gathered at the mount davidson cross. it stands about 100ft tall. this easter service is intended to renew hope. regardless of your background or what you believe in. organizers talked about how the event has faced a lot of challenges over the years. >> we've had services here through the rain, through some mosquitoes. we've had all kinds of conditions up here. but that's the thing about coming up here. it is a it is a battle for hope. and so sometimes you just

got to fight for it, fight through it. >> mayor london breed was among those who took part. she shared how as an adult, she has a greater understanding of the messages she learned growing up. going to church with her grandmother. >> millions of people took part in easter festivities today to mark the holiest day of the christian calendar. from new york to the holy land, people around the world celebrated the resurrection of jesus christ. one of the largest gatherings took place in vatican city, where pope francis delivered his traditional easter message. in saint peter's square, the pope addressed conflict around the world, including calling for a cease fire and increased humanitarian aid in gaza. >> let us not allow the current hostilities to continue to have grave repercussions on the civil population by now, at the limit of its endurance and above all, on the children. >> in new york city, crowds gathered at saint patrick's cathedral. the celebration came one day after pro-palestinian protesters interrupted the cathedral's easter vigil mass, urging religious leaders to

openly oppose genocide. california is honoring the late labor rights activist cesar chavez. chavez spent decades working to secure rights for laborers, advocating for improvements in their working and living conditions. during his time, he, along with dolores huerta, founded united farm workers, which is a labor union for farm workers today. he would have been 97 years old, celebrating chavez's legacy, governor gavin newsom today proclaimed cesar chavez day and vice president kamala harris celebrating chavez, releasing a statement saying in part for cesar chavez, it was about fighting for fairness and the dignity for workers. on this day, we celebrate his legacy through his granddaughter, julie chavez rodriguez, whom i have worked with for years. she represents all that our campaign stands for. the people i haven't played in a long time, and it's time to sit there and start living a little bit more.

$1 billion. the numbers from last night's drawing were 12, 13, 33, 50, 52, and the powerball was 23. no one was able to secure that jackpot, but just last week, a lucky winner in new jersey had all six numbers in the mega millions game. ktvu south bay reporter lamonica peters joins us now live in san jose with more from lottery players hoping to hit the jackpot tomorrow night, lamonica. >> that's right julie, the powerball numbers will be drawn tomorrow night, which is monday at 8:00. so i talked to some people who say they didn't want to wait to the last minute to get their tickets, and some people playing for the first time with nearly $1 billion powerball jackpot on the line, people who say they've never purchased lottery tickets before are now taking their chances. one player at the 711 store on kooser road in san jose, says she's able to play now because she just turned 18.

you know, you're. you're in the mood with everybody else. yeah, exactly. >> and you can't win if you don't buy a ticket. all right, lamonica, good luck. thank you. thank you, thank. >> the next tahoe snow survey is set for this week. the department of water resources will conduct the fourth survey on tuesday at phillips station along highway 50. last month's survey recorded 47.5in of snow depth, which was 77% of average for the location and time of year. and the tahoe area has had more snow over the past month. dwr conducts surveys near the first of the month, january through april, and if necessary, in may. >> well, skiers, as kristina was mentioning, and snowboarders were treated to a lot of new snow in the sierra this holiday weekend. a fresh layer of snow now covering the lake tahoe area. there are reports the storm dropped between 12 to 25in over the weekend. this late surge of winter like weather will push resorts to stay open past their expected season. kevin coop cooper explained what california resorts might be planning. >> they're saying they're going to go all the way through april

through the 28th. the other resorts looking at palisades, they're looking at that model of maybe pushing a little bit longer. we'll wait for about a week to see what they see. with throughput skiers and riders, mammoth will always push a little bit longer. they just have that base out of the southern california area to do it well. >> coop says another foot of snow over the next week would likely be enough to allow those resorts extra flexibility in staying open longer. we want to show you a live picture right now at interstate 80 in truckee. the roads look clear at this hour, but last night chain controls were in effect for this area. our meteorologist, roberta gonzalez, joins us now. she's tracking the latest conditions here in the bay area. so, roberta, are we finished with the rain for now? no. okay. >> we still have some scattered showers in and around the bay area. tortolano i wanted to give him a big shout out. he's our engineer and our technical operations center this evening, providing me with a view out towards the salesforce tower. and this is notable because we still have clouds, roughly about

1200ft in and around the bay area, as well as some rain showers. and take a look at that cluster of activity anywhere from newman backing all the way through the pacheco pass this evening, some of these lightning bolts are cloud to ground lightning, but most of this activity is now drifting out in a southerly fashion. we do still have a scattered hit and miss shower that's been making its way into the central bay, but otherwise is cut off area of low pressure that's just been meandering. all the media at sea shore. it's now spilling out in a southerly direction, leaving behind high pressure to build in. so we will have the showers diminish in the overnight hours, becoming clear. and no joke for your april 1st. no rain and then tuesday and wednesday. one day is going to pan out to be warmer , one day is going to pan out to be cooler, and then we'll even toss in more rain. returning to the bay area and julie and christina, we'll talk about that later in the program. >> sounds good. roberta. thank you. a suspicious odor prompted an apartment evacuation in san jose. it happened last night at

an apartment buiing on lee avenue next to 280 and san jose ty clege. authorities say a vta bus for evacuated residents was brought in just sthey could have a warm place to stay during that inveigatn, three people had to be taken to a local hospital just as a precaution for some minor respiratory issues. the fire department's hardous incident team did not find anything. they say the odor dissipated. residents did return to their apartments around one in the morning, with a rising actor dies in a weekend crash. >> the roles he's played before his sudden passing and evidence of the flu is found in milk in several states. >> why authorities are certain this illness will n spread across the

pilot was trying to land at the tahoe truckee airport. reporter michelle bander was in truckee with more on the investigation. reporter >> i heard this airplane, but like very close right over the house, and i was like, gosh, that sounds awfully close. neighbors living near the tahoe truckee airport in the olympic heights area knew something was wrong. seconds later, i could hear this just big thud. i knew it went down. >> the piper fixed wing, single engine turboprop plane crashed less than two miles from the airport just after 630 saturday night. wreckage sits on a set of union pacific railroad tracks. a cone marks where investigators found a wheel about 200ft from the plane. debris. >> i don't know the circumstances why he was over here. because they don't land over the home. they don't. they do not land over the homes. >> that's what investigators with the national transportation safety board and federal aviation administration want to

know what went wrong when the pilot was trying to land and why was the plane off the flight path? the plane left centennial airport in colorado saturday afternoon. residents say it had been snowing off and on all day. >> well, definitely surprised. yes, the plane out in that the visibility. we thought for sure it was flying. it was using an instrument. there was no visibility at all. >> colleagues of the victims confirmed the two people on board were lee rhone and naomi petrushka. since 2012, lee rhone worked at upwest, a silicon valley seed fund investing in israeli entrepreneurs. >> it is sad. oh my gosh. >> british american actor chance perdomo, who starred in the chilling adventures of sabrina and gen vi, was killed in a motorcycle accident over the weekend, a publicist announced his death last night and said no one else was involved in the crash. in his most recent role,

perdomo played andre anderson on the first season of gen v, a spinoff of amazon prime series the boys. the producers of the series said in a statement, quote, chance was always charming and smiling and enthusiastic force of nature, and an incredibly talented performer. he was 27 years old. >> the fda is investigating the spread of bird flu to cows, the agency says. dairy cows in texas, kansas and michigan have come down with what the agency is calling a highly contagious and often deadly strain of the illness. bird flu was detected in unpasteurized milk samples and swabs from dairy herds in those three states. dairy cow herds in new mexico and idaho are also being tested, federal authorities say. no concern. there is no concern about the safety of the country's milk supply because pasteurization is required for any milk that enters interstate commerce. there's more medical evidence that working an overnight shift can take a tremendous toll on a person's health. researchers at

a sleep clinic in napa excuse me, in tampa, florida, studied hundreds of employees who normally work from 11:00 at night until 7:00 in the morning. they found those overnight workers typically fall way short of the eight hours of sleep. they say that they need to stay healthy, and we have found that shift workers are more susceptible to having increased inflammation in their body, and that inflammation can be, a risk factor for developing things like metabolic syndrome and obesity. >> and, and heart disease, breast cancer, risks and cancer risks are higher in shift workers. >> medical experts are urging those overnight workers to try to develop a consistent sleep pattern, if possible, and they should take daytime naps whenever they can. >> and i hope and expect this to will be a bipartisan priority. >> federal officials calling on

bridge to help clear debris from the site of last week's deadly bridge collapse. >> as fox's madeline rivera explains, it comes after the biden administration approved millions of dollars in emergency relief. >> the top part of the north section of the bridge is now

gone. about 200 tons of debris lifted off. demolition crews are going through the painstaking work of cutting through pieces of mangled metal. they've got a 650 ton and a 330 ton crane. their goal is to clear the navigational channels with small vessels, can begin to move through. maryland governor westmore calls this 24 over seven operation unprecedented. and here's why this ship, the dolly, is the length of the eiffel tower with about 4000 tons of steel sitting on top of it. we've learned a survey is being done to figure out how hard the ground is in order to get the ship out of the channel, nearly 400 people are participating in this response, and there is so much work being done above and underwater because there are divers who are assessing the wreckage to determine how to cut it up into smaller pieces. governor morse says it is important to get the port of baltimore back up and running again for the good of the region and the country. the biden administration did approve $60 million for emergency relief, but that is a down payment. transportation secretary pete buttigieg says he

hopes congress can step in and release more funds. >> if you remember the 2007 bridge collapse in minnesota, ultimately about $260 million put together, including funds that were put through congress on a bipartisan basis. and i hope and expect this to will be a bipartisan priority. >> although congress is facing pressure to move quickly, we're told it may take some time to figure out how much the project would cost and what the needs are in baltimore, martha rivera, fox news. >> authorities in nashville are looking for a gunman who opened fire at a coffee shop during easter brunch, leaving one person dead and four others injured. the four victims were reportedly not seriously hurt. witnesses say the incident began as an argument between two men, then one of them pulled out a gun. the gunman reportedly left the scene in a mercedes. in indiana, multiple minors are now in the hospital after a shooting in downtown indianapolis late last night. police say they heard gunshots while on patrol around 11:00. they found six

minors between the ages of 12 and 17 that had been shot. all of them were taken to the hospital. all but one is expected to recover. investigators believe more than one weapon was used and no arrests have been made. a motive for the shooting has not been released. >> jury selection is set to begin tomorrow. in the murder trial of an idaho man accused of murdering two of his stepchildren and his former wife . chad daybell is the husband of lori vallow daybell, his alleged coconspirator, who was convicted last year. the two children went missing in 2019, and their bodies were found on the property of daybell's home a year later. prosecutors say the couple held cult like religious beliefs and plotted the killings in order to steal social security and insurance money. >> the trial publicity, creates the potential for more people having been exposed to that, which creates additional problems in terms of finding unbiased jurors. >> 2500 potential jurors have

been summoned. the trial is expected to last 8 to 10 weeks. >> now to the latest on the war in gaza. this weekend, lebanon's hezbollah group said its fighters carried out eight attacks on israeli military posts along the lebanese-israeli border. footage released by the militant group shows a fighter firing a guided anti-armor missile. in a statement, hezbollah says its fighters targeted a building where israeli soldiers were stationed, causing injuries. the statement also says the attacks came in support of the palestinian people in the gaza strip, where israel is pressing ahead with its military offensive. >> here in the u.s, the border patrol is seeing a rise in illegal border crossings, especially in texas. fox news casey stegall tells us national guard troops have been deployed to texas to help with this latest surge. >> it has been a busy holiday weekend out here in the el paso sector for border patrol agents, where we have seen at least two large groups illegally crossing into the country. sunday

morning, about 95 migrants, including single adults and family units, came into el paso from juarez. they were loaded up in vans and a bus after being processed, while saturday evening a large group of roughly 150 in size came right through the same spot, which is gate 36. most of the action seems to be right there. once again, a mix of people. this as additional national guard troops have been deployed to texas's southern border. a total of 700 have been surged to this one sector alone over the last few weeks. thousands of troops from at least a dozen other states are now out here on the front lines, including some who just arrived from indiana. >> hoosiers are proving once again, if the federal government at large can't get their act together on the border. >> we will over in eagle pass

sunday morning, the fox flight team drone capturing these images, about nine migrants who crossed the rio grande and then walked along the shoreline on the us side, right next to the razor wire in shelby park. but national guard troops turn them around, yelling at them in spanish to go back to the mexican side and wait there to officially apply for asylum. that's the latest from el paso, texas, at the southern border. casey stegall, fox news. >> turkey's president cast his ballot in the country's local elections today. the balloting is expected to provide a barometer of his popularity. the president is trying to win back control of key urban areas. he lost to the opposition five years ago. the 70 year old president and his wife voted in istanbul, which is considered the country's economic hub. about 61 million people, including more than a million first time voters, are eligible to cast ballots. eight new international airlines are being added to tsa's precheck program.
