players are saying about that? estimated $975 million. that is up for grabs tonight. >> this is ktvu fox two news at noon. >> good afternoon and thank you for joining us i'm andre senior and i'm claudine wong. >> a landslide takes out parts of highway one in big sur over the weekend. and tourism officials are telling people to stay away. for now, the focus remains on trying to help people who are staying on that monterey coast longer than expected. ktvu james torres shows us why they're stuck. >> well, behind me is the rocky creek bridge. it's what helps connect carmel to big sur. and the reason why you see all of these cones, all of these flashing lights and trucks, is because the southbound lane of highway one here washed off over the weekend. as a result of some of those storms about 20 miles down, you'll see construction for a similar thing that happened last year. and now people that are stuck between these two road closures are

waiting for instructions on how to get out. >> are a lot a lot of inconvenience. >> i inconvenient because people can only come through this part of the monterey county coast during two windows, 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. that's because cars can only drive through one lane in one direction at a time. in this area of big sur, we had been camping in big sur pfeiffer state park for the entire weekend, on saturday we went went to monterey for the day, and when we tried to come back at maybe 9 p.m, they told us that the road was shut down and they didn't know when it would be back open. so to get a hotel room, this couple came up from ventura. >> they made sure to avoid the already damaged part of highway one in the southern half of monterey county, destroyed from last year's storms. so when this chunk of roadway washed out over the weekend, they were stuck. >> so we got a hotel room and figured it would be fine in the morning. but it wasn't. >> at one point, 1600 people were stuck in that 20 mile

stretch. crews organize escorted convoys, letting people leave in the northbound direction, then allowing the southbound traffic to take off. >> i said, oh, well, this is big sur. it always happens. >> now all parks and beaches in the area are closed until further notice. so as you consider spring break plans, eliminate a trip to big sur. >> right now, as far as you know , as we've talked about and has been talked about, big sur is not available in the way that it has been in the past. and so we will put out messaging that discourages, any visitation under the current conditions. it just can't happen. >> those parks will reopen when the roadway is reopened. the caltrans doesn't have a timeline for that just yet. reporting from the monterey coast i'm james torres, ktvu, fox two news. >> well, a pedestrian was struck by a vehicle just outside of a school in san jose. it happened at 730 last night near one of the campuses of the harker private school. authorities say

a man was walking along saratoga avenue near interstate 280 when he was hit by a car and later died. saratoga avenue was closed in both directions near moorpark avenue, so far, police have not identified the pedestrian who was hit or said what happened to the driver of the car. this is san jose's seventh pedestrian death so far this year, putting the city on track to surpass last year's total of 26 pedestrian deaths. we're hearing from an oakland clothing designer and businesswoman after one of her stores was ransacked on easter sunday. surveillance video shows the thief breaking into the taylor j. collection store, located on broadway near 24th street. this person stole purses and clothes, with many of which were hand designed by the owner. the thief came back a second time and stole suitcases and a cash register system. >> i just felt violated. it was just traumatic. like it's already been really hard just being a business owner in oakland, having, like, physical locations. and so just knowing that someone came into a space that we pay for, that we put all

our energy or time and money and life into. it just felt terrible. >> the owner, taylor j. estimates at least $20,000 in damages and property losses. other businesses on that same block have been hit as well, including two different bakeries. >> oakland mayor sheng tao is once again talking about changing the city charter to ban the police commission from taking part in the next search for a police chief. according to the east bay times, mayor tao's latest comments say only the mayor and city administrators should be hiring the chief right now. under oakland city charter, the mayor selects the police chief from a list provided by the police commission. but mayor tao argues that process is not effective. a change, though, would require a new ballot initiative. oakland went more than a year without a permanent police chief until late last month, when floyd mitchell was named by the mayor as the new police chief. >> well, starting today, most fast food workers in california will be paid a $20 an hour minimum wage. it's a new law giving more financial security to a historically low paying profession. ktvu amanda quintana

is live in our newsroom with how this could have other impacts as well. amanda. well andre, that's a $4 an hour raise for these workers, up from $16 an hour. >> and this new minimum wage applies to anyone who works at a fast food chain. so they have to have at least 60 locations, and they have to have limited or no table service. but this does not include bakeries or restaurants inside grocery stores. probably it should have happened a while ago, but it's good. >> it's happening now. >> customers getting breakfast at mcdonald's monday morning say they're happy the people making their mcmuffins are getting more money. >> they're trying to pay rent and support people. and i think it's important that they get paid for their work fairly and we need them, you know, and someone's got to be here. >> you know, we count on these guys to make us food and they do a great job. so it's nice to see them getting rewarded for it. >> the new $20 an hour minimum wage will give california's fast food workers one of the highest minimum wages in the country. labor unions and the fast food industry had been fighting over wages for years before lawmakers

passed this law last year. now, the two disagree on the impact this wage increase will cause. >> we're no longer hiring. we're not backfilling positions. we're not growing in the state anymore . we're not expanding more locations. and i'm ultimately thinking about selling or closing my business. >> some major chains like mcdonald's, chipotle, starbucks, jack in the box and shake shack have already said they will have to raise menu prices. but researchers say fast food restaurants have been raising their prices for the last ten years, and they have enough of a buffer to afford this. >> it's really when we look at these profit margins that are at record levels, that profits are at record levels in the fast food industry, that we find this very clear evidence that these fast food industry, that the fast food industry in california can largely absorb these operating costs of associated with the minimum wage increase without having to hike prices up any more than they've actually have over the past decade. >> and customers are seeing that, too. >> the amount of money that they

already charge, they make a significant profit. so it's just something they hold over people's heads to try and keep the wage low. >> i don't think mcdonald's is going to run out of money because they're paying these people a little more. yeah. >> economists also found that the about 550,000 fast food workers in california are not teens making extra spending money. that's a common misconception. they're adults depending on that money to support their family. and a majority of them are poor women of color live in the newsroom. amanda quintana, ktvu, fox two news. amanda. >> thank you. rideshare drivers are rallying in san francisco today, demanding fair treatment and better pay. drivers from uber and lyft are staging a series of events to address critical issues said to be impacting their work. the rally will go from uber headquarters to lyft headquarters, both of which are located in san francisco. some of the issues they plan to address are low pay , unfair deactivations, high company fees and safety risks. drivers say they're also concerned about the impact of

the single engine turboprop plane went down in truckee during moderate snowfall. investigators identified the couple as lauren and naomi petruska. the couple worked at the palo alto tech investment firm up west, which invests in israeli startups. lauren petruska joined up west back in 2012 as a partner and became an adviser to the fund back in 2017. >> it's an inspiring guy. i'll miss him personally as i hope he rest in peace. i hope the family will be good. our heart is with them. >> up west posted a message on social media saying the company is, quote, heartbroken by this loss. the post describing the couple as having big hearts who touched the lives of everyone they met. friends of lauren was friends say lauren was an entrepreneur, venture capitalist and mentor to. >> it's a big loss for us, our community in the silicon valley, and it's a big shoes to fill up.

i hope that all of us will keep on supporting, the next generation of founders like he did. >> so up west says israel was a big part of the petrasch's lives . they supported numerous jewish initiatives and social causes, too. the huskies were the only people on board that plane that was flying out of an airport in denver, back to northern california, when that aircraft went down saturday evening. no homes were damaged, but nearby railroad tracks must now be repaired. meteorologists say it was snowing during that flight with visibility about half a mile facing light winds. now, that plane crash happened between railroad tracks, as we mentioned, and the truckee river, less than two miles from the truckee tahoe airport. the family has three sons. both the ntsb and faa are investigating this case. >> the cdc says there have been nearly 100 measles cases nationwide this year so far, and that includes cases in california as fox's madison, scarpino, tells us, doctors are renewing their push to get people vaccinated. >> measles was thought to be

eradicated in the u.s, but now public health officials are sounding the alarm on a sharp rise in cases driven by recent outbreaks in chicago, philadelphia and southeast florida. doctors say the highly contagious disease can infect up to 90% of non-immune people who are exposed to the virus, so it's definitely something to worry about, to think about and to be aware that we are getting more measles than we used to. according to the cdc, there have been at least 97 confirmed measles cases throughout the country this year, a nearly 70% increase from a total of 58 for all of 2023. the majority of these were linked to international travel, and children who have not received a measles, mumps and rubella vaccine can be. a cause of hospitalization, serious illness and even death in certain populations, particularly very young children, pregnant women and those with compromised immune systems. doctors recommend people get their first

shot between the ages of 12 and 15 months, and their second one between 4 and 6 years old. but public health officials say vaccination rates have fallen in the last few years, due in part to vaccine hesitancy after the covid 19 pandemic. >> if you've completed the series of vaccinations, you should not have to worry. however a simple blood test can check to see whether you have antibodies and are protected. >> the cdc recommends isolating for three weeks if your kids are unvaccinated and have been exposed to measles. in atlanta, madison, scarpino, ktvu fox two news. >> well, with the bay area's rainy season nearing an end, allergy season is in full swing. allergists say rain typically washes away the pollen, so when it stops more people end up calling their doctor, saying they have allergy symptoms. those symptoms include itchy and watery eyes, a stuffy or runny nose, sneezing, and congestion. the american academy of allergy, asthma and immunology reports that seasonal allergies affect

at this time, mid 60s san francisco. we've got upper 60s in concord and low 60s reported at half moon bay. so a pretty one out there across the bay area for the afternoon. temperatures will be a little bit above average. we'll take a look at that in just a moment. napa right now reporting a breeze coming in from the northeast at about 12mph. concord gusting to 17. in oakland, it's onshore. it's about eight. so a little bit of a breeze. and then we tend to see that localized onshore breeze turn on a little bit more getting into the afternoon. but storm tracker two here is quiet. and we are going to be quiet at least for the next couple of days before things start to change up once again. for today and tomorrow, a ridge will be overhead and that will keep us high and dry. meanwhile, if you look to the east, take a look at that storm there that was right over california over the weekend and provided not only the bay area, but southern california with rain and mountain snow. the futurecast here will show you when we do begin to transition in. so today going to be a pleasant one tomorrow, perhaps

jackson, lisa goodwin, schaff, brady stewart and danielle slaton make up bay fc's all female executive team and c-suite. >> there's times when i kind of sort of can't believe we've come as far as we've come. >> the people that are in these roles are the right people. they are women, but they are definitely the right people to be in them. >> the five women all come from different backgrounds, both personally and professionally, but they share a common goal. >> the ultimate goal is one to be a global brand. we believe it's possible, and that is really the north star that sort of driving us as an organization. >> the opportunity to hopefully turn that vision into a reality here in the bay area, surrounded by supportive women and men, is not lost on them. >> i think the thing that stands out to me most is that, i can really just be my authentic self and not that i couldn't before, but for some reason there's just like a freedom to it. of not feeling like you're the only one, like the only person of color, the only woman in the

room. and to not have to really kind of have that baggage, is lovely. >> and while not all five have extensive sports backgrounds, it's just that diversity that makes them stronger. they've all worked for years to get to where they are all starting and coming from different places. >> my first job i worked at a vegetable stand selling vegetables. >> my first job while also playing on the women's national team was a was as a skycap outside of the san jose airport for american islands. >> my first job i was i taught swimming lessons. i was a lifeguard. i think i worked at like a snack bar. >> my first job was at a golf course in novato. i was a starter and a waitress. >> but now, years later, they're here. >> incredibly rare, at least from my perspective, that you get to do something that leaves a lasting legacy, and they're going to make sure that they reach down and pull up the next generation of women alongside of them. i think bay fc, we have the opportunity to build a legacy in the bay area and in women's sports globally.

>> bailey o'carroll, ktvu, fox two news. >> well, the city of oakland reportedly plans to offer a five year lease extension to the a's at the coliseum. espn reports that the deal would give the a's a temporary home until its new stadium in las vegas is built as part of the new deal, the a's would pay more than $19 million a year over five years, for a total of $97 million. reports show that right now they paid just $1.25 million per year. the team's current lease at the coliseum expires at the end of this season. both sides plan to meet on tuesday about the proposed contract. that includes an opt out after three years in southern california, an innovative program matches homeless young people, with home owners willing to help. >> it's a nonprofit called safe place for youth, where homeowners who have an extra bedroom can take in a young person experiencing homelessness between the ages of 18 and 25 for at least six months and give them a chance to improve their lives. >> the homelessness problem is,

has skyrocketed, and these young people who have nowhere to go, that's that's not right. the community needs to step up. >> i feel a lot more calm, a lot more, tranquil. i guess you could say. and, it's a nice change of pace. i'm gonna do my best to, be respectful, respect her space. just like she's, going to respect minds. and remember that i'm a guest in her home. >> the homeowner is paid a stipend of up to $700 a month to help cover expenses. and the young person can receive help from a case manager for schooling, job training, permanent housing placement, or counseling. >> well, despite some major strides in diversity over the last 15 years, the american nursing workforce still remains underrepresented. federal data shows that black and hispanic nurses are still a large minority in the field. registered black nurses only made up 11% of the workforce in 2022, but that's up from 8% in 2018 and about 5% from 2008. the share of hispanic nurses actually fell to 10% in 2022,

at&t account holders information has been stolen in its latest data breach. at&t said it found it while searching the so-called dark web, where hackers often post sensitive information. the customer information from the year 2019 revealed that some social security numbers were exposed, as well as four digit passcodes and posted affected account holders have been, or soon will be notified by at&t by email or letters that their four digit passcode has already been changed and that it will pay for credit monitoring services as warranted. last week, cyber services provider termly released its analysis of data breaches. from 2020 to 2023 alone, the top five breaches each year combined netted 2.5 billion breached, hacked or exposed accounts. the all time

top ten incidents saw 9.4 billion breaches, hacks and exposures from the likes of yahoo! facebook, spam bot, myspace, friendfinder and others. that number nowhere near the total number of major breaches. far far exceeds the population of planet earth. and so coming up at four and five, what the law says and some possible solutions, real solutions to this way out of control problem. back to you. >> all right. looking forward to that. thanks so much, tom. well, san francisco based leader in artificial intelligence is expanding around the world. open ai is reportedly going to open an office in tokyo, japan this month. that's according to bloomberg. it will be the company's third international office, along with london and dublin. the maker of chatgpt, which is valued at over $80 billion, is also planning on expanding the ai service into the japanese language and the biden administration wants tech companies to do more to address

their huge demand for electricity. energy secretary jennifer granholm tells axios she wants to accelerate conversations with big tech firms like microsoft, google and amazon as those companies use more electricity for their data centers and ai projects. the department is reportedly considering that those tech firms could host their own power plants, including nuclear power plants, on the sites of their data centers. >> all right, now to baltimore, where crews still have a long way to go in cleaning up that wreckage from last week's bridge collapse. they're now working to open up a temporary channel to allow some commercial ships to resume operations in and out of the baltimore port. rebecca castor has the latest. >> this is what crews are dealing with in the patapsco river in baltimore. the container ship that caused the francis scott key bridge to collapse hasn't budged, and tons of debris is blocking ships from sailing in and out of one of the nation's most critical ports. >> this is not just impacting maryland. this is impacting the farmer in kentucky. it's

impacting the auto dealer in ohio. it's impacting the restaurant in louisiana and in tennessee. >> that's why crews are now working to clear a temporary alternate channel for commercially essential ships. the first step to getting the port of baltimore back up and running. >> there are east coast ports that can temporarily absorb the traffic that would have been headed to baltimore. whether we're talking about the containers or vehicles. but it's not the same. >> we have over 15,000 people working directly for the port. thousands of others. they're livelihood depends on the port. so opening that channel is the priority. >> the bridge came crashing down last week when a cargo ship slammed into one of its supports . six construction workers were killed in the collapse, but dive teams have only managed to recover two bodies. meanwhile the 22 crew members on the ship are stuck on board in order to cooperate with the national transportation safety board's investigation. president biden

says he'll visit baltimore sometime this week, and is still calling on congress to approve the federal funding needed to rebuild the bridge in washington . rebecca castor, ktvu, fox two news now the national transportation safety board says the francis scott key bridge was in satisfactory condition before it was hit by that cargo ship, but data from the federal government reveals more than 42,000 bridges across the country are in poor condition. >> 1 in 3 bridges across the united states need some sort of repair or reconstruction work now, because of the amount of money needed to repair a bridge, some older bridges remain closed and that impacts surrounding communities by throwing off supply chain routes for trucks and impacting emergency vehicle response times. >> well, some women are taking to tiktok to share similar stories of being punched in the face on the streets of new york city. >> you guys, i was literally just walking and a man came up

and punched me in the face, so i just got punched in the face walking home, tiktok influencer holly kate says a man walking a dog punched her in the face while she was just walking down the street. >> police charged a 40 year old man in that attack. it is unclear if he's responsible for the other attacks. another woman posted about getting punched in the face two years ago. >> i fall straight to the ground and i'm just in like, absolute disbelief. >> in a now deleted comment on one of the tiktok videos, former real housewives of new york city star bethenny frankel commented with a similar experience, writing this happened to me a few months ago, but i was embarrassed to say i was taking a video of a bakery. >> well, palo alto city leaders are set to decide whether or not to get rid of parking spaces along el camino real to make room for bike lanes, caltrans is going to repave el camino and has proposed adding bike lanes through palo alto. the agency says the changes would make the road safer, but the city council

has to sign off on that plan to remove parking. >> well, carpool lanes in california will soon be reserved for just carpoolers. right now, these carpool lanes allow cars with two or more people, and also allow cars with those maroon, green, or yellow stickers. those decals are for clean air vehicles. california started allowing clean air vehicles to use carpool lanes way back in 1999, but the dmv now says starting in 2025, that will no longer be allowed. so this comes after governor newsom signed an executive order back in 2020 that required all new cars and passenger trucks sold in the state to be zero emission vehicles by 2035. >> an important move in san jose for more affordable housing now. the city council unanimously approved an anti-gentrification rule that will help protect low income renters. now, under the new law, 20% of affordable apartments in new city funded properties will be reserved for lower income applicants living

in high displacement areas. applications are now open for a program to give money every month to some low income families. in milpitas, the city is going to give 50 families living or working in milpitas, $645 a month for rental housing support for up to two years. the money will go straight to their landlords to pay the rent. the applications are due by the end of this month. >> well, a large number of young americans say they will consider alternative approaches to purchasing a home in this housing market. potential home buyers are turning to family for help making that investment. a recent credit karma survey revealed that nearly 60% of gen zers are also open to buying with someone other than a romantic partner. the survey also found that home ownership remains a top priority for 42% of americans. >> all right, nice weather. allow thousands of people to show up for a special easter celebration in san francisco. the sisters of perpetual indulgence hosting their 45th annual easter in the park yesterday. it started back in

into the country. sunday morning, about 95 migrants, including single adults and family units, came into el paso from juarez. they were loaded up in vans and a bus after being processed, while saturday evening a large group of roughly 150 in size came right through the same spot, which is gate 36. most of the action seems to be right there. once again, a mix of people. this as additional national guard troops have been deployed to texas's southern border. a total of 700 have been surged to this one sector alone over the last few weeks. thousands of troops from at least a dozen other states are now out here on the front lines, including some who just arrived from indiana. >> hoosiers are proving once again an if the federal government at large can't get their act together on the border . we will. >> over in eagle pass sunday

morning, the fox flight team drone capturing these images about nine migrants who crossed the rio grande and then walked along the shoreline on the us side right next to the razor wire in shelby park. but national guard troops turned them around, yelling at them in spanish to go back to the mexican side and wait there to officially apply for asylum. that's the latest from el paso, texas, at the southern border. casey stegall, fox news. >> well, there is now more medical evidence that working an overnight shift can take a tremendous toll on an employee's health. researchers at a sleep clinic in tampa, florida, studied hundreds of employees who normally work from 11:00 at night until 7:00 in the morning. they found that those overnight workers typically fall way short of the eight hours of sleep they say is needed to stay healthy. >> and we have found that shift workers are more susceptible to having increased inflammation in

center coastside is closing its emergency room because of storm damage. the hospital in moss beach expected to reopen the e.r. in 6 to 9 months. administrators say extensive repairs are needed, but county supervisor ray mueller, who represents the san mateo county coast, says he has, quote, grave concerns about the impact of this closure on the community. now, he says the seton cosine emergency room is the only facility of its kind serving that region. a warning now in southern california for beachgoers la county because of high levels of bacteria, the warning by the department of public health will continue through wednesday morning, but say it could be extended if the rain worsens in that area. officials say the rain causes bacteria and debris from streets and mountain areas to flow into the ocean and contaminate the waters there. >> skiers and snowboarders enjoyed a lot of new snow in the sierra over the easter holiday weekend. a fresh layer of snow now covers the lake tahoe area and there are reports that between 12 to 25in fell over the weekend. this late surge of
