a shooting on interstate 80 sends a person to the hospital. tonight, drivers in the east bay, alarmed after another act of violence on a bay area freeway. >> it makes me worried because, like, if i'm driving home from work and i see bullets, like, you know, you worry for your safety. >> some drivers on edge tonight. good evening. this friday i'm cristina rendon and i'm greg leigh. >> tonight's shooting happening right in the middle of rush hour in berkeley. police say a driver was shot, then crashed their car. it happened just before 5:00 at the ashby avenue on ramp to eastbound interstate 80. ktvu zac sos joins us live in berkeley along i-80 near where the crash happened with the latest zach and the chp able to

reopen that on ramp just before eight. >> they spent around three hours searching for clues, speaking to witnesses. meantime, the driver involved in all of this, they likely sustained injuries not only from that shooting, but from the crash that happened afterwards when they lost control of their car for hours friday. investigators crisscrossing an on ramp to i-80 in berkeley looking for evidence after a reported freeway shooting. chp officers first called to the eastbound ramp at ashby avenue at around 5 p.m. a 911 caller saying the driver in their car had been shot by someone in another vehicle. the victim's car, a silver toyota camry, then slamming into a barrier. >> there was clearly significant damage to the victim vehicle as well from the crash. so, you know, we are still waiting to hear exactly what injuries were sustained by the victim between the shooting as well as the

crash. >> officers quickly shutting down the ramp and diverting drivers. >> yeah, it makes me worried. i guess, like shocked. >> i wasn't expecting to hear something like this. >> you worry for your safety and your family too. >> the victim rushed to a nearby hospital next to the badly damaged toyota, a woman believed to have been inside the car at the time being interviewed by police officers. locating at least one bullet casing at the split to the ramp. >> we're continuing to ask at this time that you know anybody who might have seen anything, please call us. you know, it's interstate 80 at 5:00 on a friday. we know there's a lot of vehicles out there. there's a lot of people either, you know, leaving to go home for the weekend or maybe on their way out of town for the weekend. so we're hoping that anybody that was nearby at that time picks up the phone and calls us. >> it marks the second freeway shooting in two weeks. last wednesday, a dash cam capturing the moment a driver on 880 was shot at during an apparent road rage incident in union city, the driver only suffering minor

injuries and the shooter later arrested. the chp now planning to install 190 license plate reader cameras along highways in the east bay, something like to add a little more sense of safety. >> would be nice for sure. >> and at this hour, still unclear what condition the driver is in right now. the passenger in that car, they were not hurt. meantime chp again asking anyone with information, perhaps video of this shooting to reach out. >> greg, another scary situation for drivers out there. zac sos live in berkeley. zach thank you. an 18 year old man is charged with attempted murder in connection with a triple shooting in a safeway parking lot. it happened monday afternoon in american canyon. three people were taken to the hospital and two people were arrested. the napa county district attorney says. 18 year-old christian evans is facing assault and weapons charges, along with attempted murder. the other suspect is a minor who is also charged with attempted murder. both are being

held without bail. >> new at ten not a digital breach, but the disappearance of a paper log book has led to a potential privacy breach at zuckerberg san francisco general hospital. the hospital says the log book went missing on december 12th, and hospital officials say despite an investigation, it has not been found. it contained private information including patient names, dates of birth, medical record numbers and other private information. the hospital has contacted the impacted patients and is reviewing policies and doing extra training to ensure such incidents don't happen again. >> a federal judge has made a decision on who will serve as a special master at the troubled fci dublin women's prison. the former chief probation officer of alameda county, wendy, still is expected to start the job immediately. she will be given a four person staff as the team is tasked with ensuring reforms at fci dublin still was among the top candidates proposed by the attorneys representing women suing the prison. >> she has extensive experience

site. >> ktvu jana katsuyama joins us live with reaction from one local development group and concerns from the oakland roots soccer team that their future at the coliseum might be in jeopardy. jana >> greg. the a's may have dashed oakland fans hopes of another three years at the coliseum, but today talk already was pivoting to how their early exit could impact access for developers and professional soccer teams to use the site. as the oakland a's prepare to walk away from the oakland coliseum, the athletics owner, john fisher, still has a 50% stake in the property acquired from alameda county, with the city of oakland controlling the other half. the city has openly supported a proposed development of the 120 acre sports complex, with added retail and housing by the locally led african american sports and entertainment group. >> and we just feel like there's a great opportunity here at this site to revitalize and to sort of restart a new chapter and a new generation for oakland and for the coliseum site. >> ray bobbitt is the group's founding partner, who says that the a's departure next season

could help speed up any planning or application processes. >> i think we can move quicker to those kind of spots with with respect to this timeline sort of being moved up, so that is helpful. >> the group already has agreements to work with the city and bring the oakland roots and soul soccer teams into the coliseum site, but on friday, the roots posted a warning to their fans in the community expressing alarm about their own future at the coliseum. in a letter to the alameda county board of supervisors, the team said the county indicated it might sell the malibu parking lot property without granting the roots a ten year lease to build a pop up soccer stadium at the site. the letter also warned that the alameda county's board appears prepared to pivot on a deal that would give the roots use of a training facility on harbor bay parkway ahead of the 2026 world cup games, and the letter raised a third concern, saying the county and coliseum authority have not yet finalized an agreement for the roots and soul soccer teams to play at the coliseum in 2025.

>> i don't know what their future will be so we have to just see how it will come out. >> some alameda county residents say with the a's leaving, they hope the county, the city and the a's can reach some agreement that will help residents keep at least one professional sports team in oakland said. >> hurry up and do it. you know time is money. time is precious. and i think the sad thing about it is that we have a team right here and they can't generate, and they also can't do what they want to do. >> one of the oakland roots partial owners, musician billie joe armstrong of the band green day, posted this on his instagram account today saying alameda county, let's make this happen. the roots are urging fans to voice support at the next county board meeting. that's on april 16th. now, i did reach out to the board president and the authority chair for comment. so far, we have not heard any replies from them. >> yeah, a lot of unknowns to sort out about the future of the coliseum. jana katsuyama janet, thank you. >> some office staff of the oakland a's have been told they will likely lose their jobs at the end of the season because

the move to sacramento will require less staff. ktvu tom vacar has more on those impacts, and what this means for workers who have been with the team for several years. coming in the seventh position, center fielder though a's players and senior management will move off to sacramento and ultimately las vegas, the rest of the game day employees have just 74 pay days left. >> bartender tony evans, a ten year veteran, is one of them. >> this is the time of the year where a lot of us workers, we pay our bills from working for the a's. >> food services alone has a pool of 800 workers, not to mention ushers, security janitors and facilities personnel. >> all you got so many people that will be out of health care from may all the way to october, which is really bad. moms, dads, grandparents, everything. seniors. you have a lot of younger people with families, with small children. vanessa riles is a campaign coordinator for ebay's the east bay alliance

following a deadly shooting in san francisco's mission district . police say officers were called to mission near 20th street just after 130 this afternoon, where they found the victim. despite efforts of first responders. that victim died at the scene. ktvu is amber lee joins us live in san francisco with the latest developments. amber >> greg. neighbors, tell me the deadly shooting is unsettling.

it happened in broad daylight with plenty of people around in a busy commercial area. a resident cleans up the debris outside a residential hotel in san francisco's mission district . shattered glass left from a shooting around 140 friday afternoon that left one man dead. >> we hear that that bomb. >> then we come out, neighbor jason flores tells me he heard a single gunshot. witnesses say the victim was shot outside of the barbershop and that he stumbled back inside, collapsed, and died. neighbors described the victim as being in his 20s and that he was from venezuela. they say it was the victim's first day at work in the barbershop. >> this terrible though, because, you know, if the guy when he shoot the bullet can go straight right there, flores says. >> fortunately, no one else was injured. this is a busy area. mission street between 19th and 20th streets. witnesses say the suspect fled the scene in a white suv that was parked steps

from the shooting. >> when they came, they was hit a lot of police over there, like, see the they closed the street. >> abel padilla is the owner of la playa seafood, a restaurant a few doors down from the shooting. padilla grew up in this neighborhood and opened the business just two months ago. >> this is the first time i hear that happens out here. so to me, you're safe. >> still, business owners say they'd like to see police do foot patrols in the area. it's terrible because i never see something like that close to me. police have not said if the victim and suspect knew each other or what the motive was, and investigators have not released a description of the suspect or the getaway vehicle. greg. >> all right. amber lee, live in the mission for us tonight. amber. thank you. one person was injured in ahooting this morning in mountain view. the shooting was reported shortly before 6 a.m. at aome north rengstorff avenue. after a disturbance involving several people. sh afterward, a man arrived at a local hospital with a gunshot wound thats t

considered life threateningoffid a firearm was found in their car. mountain view police did not say whether they will seek charges. >> convoys are expected to resume this weekend in monterey county to help people stranded by last weekend's slip out along highway one. last saturday, part of the highway crumbled near big sur. caltrans closed around 40 miles of the road, stranding over 1000 people. earlier this week, convoys helped some people leave the area, but wet weather forced caltrans to stop the operation. now, it says the convoys are expected to resume tomorrow as its engineers continue to assess the damage to the road. hurry, guys! run! >> it's a hailstorm! >> heavy hail in the east bay this is what it looked like earlier today in san ramon. video from our photographer joseph cousins. a wave of hail just coming down in that city. >> meteorologist roberto gonzalez joining us now. roberta, another day of some wild weather. what is our weekend look like? >> absolutely. well, we do have one day this weekend where it's

degrees in novato, and the winds just this hour are beginning to dial back. they're now at 16 in throughout that san bruno gap. and the reason why i'm talking about this because once these winds subside, we've got frost advisories in effect i'll pinpoint where. plus we'll talk about where it's going to rain this weekend. that's still a little bit later in this newscast. >> sounds good roberta. we'll see you then. local officials and science fans are finishing up their final preparations this weekend for monday's solar eclipse. millions of people across the country are expected to view the phenomenon. local officials in the eclipse's path of totality suggest spectators get to their viewing spots as early as possible to reduce crowd congestion. in. some counties are declaring a state of emergency as one way to prepare local agencies for tourists. >> our local communities have been working to prepare for this influx of visitors, but there's no way around the fact that there will be incredibly heavy traffic and very large crowds.

to renel. this is a tribute to her. >> the giants have selected a number of interim announcers until a permanent one is named. >> there's a new way to skip lines at oracle park, the mlb ballpark app where people can access their tickets is now using facial authentication software for its new go ahead entry program. in the app, fans can now take a selfie, upload the picture and have it confirmed by cameras as they walk through the gates. this means fans who use the go ahead entry program will no longer have to get their tickets scanned to get into the park. go ahead. entry is available at two gates the lefty o'doul gate on the first base side and the second and king streets gate on the third base side. >> later tonight in sports, it was a game that had fans on the edge of their seats. tonight's battle for a trip to the women's basketball national title game. also coming up. it was promised shortly after the start of the israel-hamas war. the places of worship in california still waiting on security funds from the state.

i didn't know if i had a case or not. as soon as i got a hold of my attorney, she was very, very nice, very kind. because of jacoby and meyers, i don't have that pressure to worry about a medical bill or things like that. if i know of any accident, i'm like, call jacoby and meyers, they'll help you. security grants promised to them by the state following the start of the israel-hamas war in october. the governor promised to quickly provide $40 million in grants for places of worship, but the recipients of this money have yet to be announced or notified today. cal oes said that the grant funding is under final legal review, and announcements will be made soon, but with no specified date. assemblyman joe paterson says

he's been trying to help a jewish organization with this for months. >> i know that there's a lot of work to get this money out, but it's been so long. it's been several months. i mean, you know, the jewish community in my district is thinking a lot still about concerns they have that came out from october 7th. and so there's a sense of urgency. and i just think, you know, it's somewhat unfortunate that it's taking this long because there are a lot of legitimate concerns . >> more than 1200 organizations applied for the grants, which cal oes has pointed to as a reason for the delay. right now, the state is reimbursing local law enforcement for any overtime costs to help provide in-person security to places of worship. >> california has unveiled a new plan to counter anti-semitism, and in this plan, governor gavin newsom says california will use four new strategies to combat hatred towards the state's jewish population. these include supporting and protecting jewish communities, addressing and preventing anti-semitism, and all hate and violence, uplifting

jewish heritage and building mutual understanding and advancing equity and countering discrimination. governor newsom says he'll continue to engage the legislature in talks about shared priorities to address anti-semitism. >> tonight, we are learning more about a new lawsuit filed by one of the survivors of the mass shooting in half moon bay more than a year ago. >> one of the men who was shot but survived is now suing the farm where that shooting happened, accusing the farm of failing to protect its workers. ktvu is alice wirtz explains the intention of the lawsuit. >> and just over a year ago, this tiny coastal town in san mateo county experienced a shocking case of workplace violence. seven people lost their lives in a mass shooting that took place at two farms five men, two women. the shooter parked outside the sheriff's office before being arrested. and today's event packed with media. pedro felix romero perez was shot five times and survived. >> i had two bullets in my

stomach, his brother, jose romero perez, killed with six other farm workers, is that i have suffered a lot. >> lawyers filed suit, claiming the employer, california terra gardens, failed to safeguard their farm workers from numerous dangers. >> everybody has a right to feel safe in their home in the state of california. not only did california terra gardens violate those rights by providing squalid living conditions for the farm workers, but they violated those rights by not providing a place where their tenants felt safe. >> attorney joe cotchett pointed out this was a traumatic event at the workplace that should never have happened. >> that's the tragedy. but we were shocked when our investigators came back with photographs, the likes of which you can't imagine. >> pedro perez was in the container he lived in when he was shot five times. containers are typical housing for many

farm workers, with no running water or electricity. >> one would think after 40 years of cesar chavez, we would be able to put people in something better than a container, a container. >> belinda arriaga is with alice, a community nonprofit that works with farm workers immediately providing housing support and of course, alice has been doing a lot of mental health work to all would like to see more state and federal support for farm workers everywhere who endure the same conditions. it's the landlords and the farms that fell short, and it's the landlords and the farms that are going to be held accountable for the harm that pedro and his brother's family are suffering. >> san francisco supervisor and board president aaron peskin has officially entered the race for mayor of san francisco. peskin filed all of the necessary paperwork today. he has served on the board of supervisors for the past 17 years. peskin is

considered more progressive than the current mayor and incumbent london breed. peskin says he will use his experience as a policymaker, and his recovery from alcoholism to help the city deal with homelessness and the fentanyl crisis, and affordable housing. >> san francisco values are values of caring about our people, of doing right by our city, of being fiscally prudent, of having a thriving economy. we those are san francisco values. those are the values that i espouse. and that's what i'm going to bring to this race. >> peskin is joining a growing list of people hoping to unseat mayor london breed, including fellow supervisor asha sapphire and former san francisco supervisor interim mayor marc farrell and philanthropist daniel lurie. >> it's been 30 years since polly klaas was kidnaped from a slumber party, then murdered. her killer, richard allen davis, has been on death row ever since. now he hopes to change that. >> his attorneys believe a legal loophole may entitle him to be resentenced. ktvu san rubin has

more. >> one of california's most notorious killers wants his death sentence overturned. it was back in 1996 that richard allen davis was convicted in the kidnaping and murder of 12 year old polly klaas, now he's back in court thanks to a change in the law. it's horrible. >> this should have ended 30 years ago. i had every expectation that once he went on death row, it was done. whether he was executed or not, it was finished. but here we are. >> marc klaas, polly's father, calls this revictimization the issue, a recent criminal justice reform law that invalidated certain sentencing enhancements. it may have opened the door to have cases like richard allen davis's reconsidered. >> and this is a big deal, not just for mr. richard allen davis, but for others on death row in california, legal analyst stephen clark says this will be a first test for the new law. will he get another shot at getting his death verdict overturned? even though the technical issue is only these

prison priors, which only added 1 or 2 years to his sentence, klaas says it should be a wake up call for other victims families that hundreds of cases could be impacted by what happens here. >> this case is the tip of the iceberg. it's going to happen again and again and again and again and i'll tell you what's going to happen. in some instances, somebody is going to get out. >> richard allen davis was not present for the hearing. neither his attorneys nor the sonoma county prosecutors handling the case were willing to comment. >> i'm not going to make any statements on the record. >> it's affected my health. it's affected my mind. it affects everything. >> but for marc klaas, any resentencing is like reopening a wound. >> there's only one beneficiary from all of this. it's the guy on death row. it's the guy that murdered my kid. >> the next court appearance in this case is set for may 31st. that's the day the judge will decide whether this case is eligible for resentencing in santa clara county. ann rubin, ktvu, fox two news, santa clara

county district attorney jeff rosen is taking steps to change the sentences of more than a dozen prison inmates, from death to life behind bars without parole. >> the da says the move comes four years after the district attorney's office stopped using the death penalty penalty. rosen said he lost faith in capital punishment in recent years. he called it an antiquated, racially biased, error prone system that deters nothing and costs the county millions of dollars. >> we're doing a few things. one, we're bringing finality to the case, finality to the victims. >> this is what's going to happen. this person is going to die in prison. and we're also able to then take the resources that we were using to defend these convictions. and apply them in other, more productive places in our office. >> if approved by the court, the move will affect 15 people who have been sentenced to death in santa clara county. the oldest case goes back as far as 1979 and is still being litigated. governor gavin newsom suspended executions in california in
