the humanitarian crisis is growing. six months later. good evening everyone. >> i'm mike mibach and i'm heather holmes. jordan now says it is sending its largest humanitarian aid convoy to the gaza strip since the conflict started in october. hundreds of trucks carrying food are on their way to gaza. this week, us military jets have also stepped up their airdrops of food. the united nations is warning a massive famine is imminent in gaza. in another tragedy tied to this war here in the bay area, people held events to honor the lives lost and to call for the release of the hostages still being held by the militant group hamas in the south bay, a group of people gathered in palo alto to show its support for the children who have suffered since the war began. ktvu lamonica peters tonight spoke to some of the attendees who continue to push for an immediate ceasefire. >> at the corner of town and country village in palo alto, we

demand a ceasefire. dozens of people gathered to show support for an immediate ceasefire in gaza. the gaza health ministry says women and children make up two thirds of those killed. >> we're talking about an extraordinary number of orphaned children, children who've lost their entire families, children who are now caretakers for their younger siblings. it's just really i'm a mother of four children. it's incomprehensible to me. >> free palestine, the group calls its weekly event vigil for the children of gaza. they say they've been meeting at this corner each sunday for months, trying to bring awareness to the suffering. the un recently concluded that starvation in gaza is imminent, and israel may be committing war crimes. >> the pressure we're putting on government is actually working. this is the only reason they're turning now. not out of compassion, not out of humanity, but because they're afraid we won't vote for them. >> in november, six months after

the attacks, israel says more than 130 hostages are still being held by hamas. and the gaza health ministry says more than 33,000 palestinians have been killed, with no current deal or ceasefire agreement on the table, analysts say there's no end in sight to the fighting. >> when we called for a cease fire, we mean everybody should work to put down their arms and build towards a more peaceful coexistence. that's fair for both the palestinians and the israelis, as the group says, they'll continue meeting here every sunday, calling for ceasefire into the death and violence comes to an end. >> lamonica peters ktvu, fox two news new at 11 the overdose free marin coalition will hold a forum this week to address the increase in opioid overdoses in marin county. >> this year's focus is working together to prevent overdose. the forum will discuss collaborative strategies, sharing resources and community action. the marin county health

department says recent statistics do show the county averaging more than one fatal overdose a week, with the biggest threat continuing to be the use of fentanyl. the virtual forum will begin 630 wednesday night and is open to the public. >> richard allen davis, one of california's most notorious convicted killers, is now seeking to have his death sentence overturned. davis was convicted and sentenced to be executed back in 1996 for the kidnaping and murder of 12 year old polly klaas in petaluma. his lawyers say a recent criminal justice reform law that invalidated certain sentencing enhancements now entitles davis to have his sentence reconsidered. well, sonoma county prosecutors are against the move. polly klaas father, marc klaas, also disagrees. he says this case could affect thousands of murder convictions. >> this case is the tip of the iceberg. it's going to happen again and again and again and again. and i'll tell you what's going to happen. in some

instances, somebody is going to get out and mayhem will ensue. it's affected my health. it's affected my mind. it affects everything. >> the judge is expected to release a decision next month on whether davis is eligible for resentencing. >> a crash in the east bay killed one child and sent several injured people to the hospital, according to chp. just after 5:00 this morning, an suvs traveling north on 680 right near the 242 interchange wit somehow went off the road. the suv then flipped, ejecting a number of passengers before then crashing into a median. a nine year old girl was pronounced dead at the scene. four women were transported to the hospital in walnut creek. authorities say all four are being treated for serious injuries. chp initial investigation reports several people in the suv were not wearing a seatbelt. officers are still looking for the driver of the vehicle, only described as a 30 year old man who got out of the suv and walked away from the

scene. >> a new at 11 tonight. the monterey police department is investigating its very first two hate crimes of the year. the department says it recognizes how these crimes bring negative consequences to the community as a whole. this was in a news release about the incidents. now, the first report was back on march 23rd, when a man was caught on camera displaying white power symbols before allegedly yelling racial epithets. the case has been sent to the county for prosecution. the second report was two days later at fisherman's wharf, when an unhoused man admitted to yelling racial epithets at another homeless person and then attempting to kick them. he has been ordered to appear in court for hate crime and assault tonight. >> three people now in custody here in the bay area are accused of stealing tens of millions of dollars from low income california families by using stolen electronic benefit transfer or ebt information at atms. federal officials say the men pulled the cash out using fake cards that were loaded with

legitimate ebt card information. the three are accused of stealing nearly $23 million from low income victims. and according to the public criminal complaint, the money was stolen from victim ebt card beneficiaries from january to march of this year, including many here in northern california . all three men from romania were arrested last week across the state. their next court appearance, scheduled for wednesday in oakland. >> new tonight two sports programs at the university of san francisco are being cut. as ktvu zac sos tells us. the university says the men's and women's tennis teams are being eliminated, all because of budget shortfalls. >> kind of sad. >> i just felt bad about it. it made me kind of sad to hear about a team folding. >> university of san francisco students learning this weekend that their men's and women's tennis teams would be taking to the courts in golden gate park for the last time when the season wraps up. >> i know that the university is

in a bit of a dire situation, so i know that they had to cut something, and a lot of folks knew about tennis. >> the university describing its decision to discontinue both division one programs as among the difficult moves being made on campus to save money due to enrollment shortfalls. >> i absolutely do feel bad for the team. i mean, i, i can't say that i was too surprised because , i feel like a lot of programs have been getting cut and a lot of programs here don't have a lot of funding, especially like arts. >> i'm glad they didn't end up cutting a major, because i think that would have been more detrimental to more students and also incoming students. >> together, the men's and women's tennis programs costing the university more than $1 million to operate each year. i think there's probably other things that they could have done to save money if they needed to save money, and i think cutting the tennis team was not the way to do it. in a statement, university athletic director larry williams saying in part, quote, personally, i'm very

lawsuit filed in la superior court accuses christian king combs, son of diddy, of sexually assaulting and possibly drugging a woman in 2022. and attorneys representing the woman say that the son leased the yacht and had full control of its staff, and the premises is now. diddy is named in the suit for liability, but he was not accused of sexual assault. in this court filing. this comes weeks after his la and miami homes were raided as part of a federal sex trafficking investigation in washington state. >> two people are still at large after they were caught burglarizing a shell station with a u-haul surveillance video shows the moment the thieves used a chain attached to the truck to rip open the front door of the station in the city of shoreline, a masked man fills large garbage bags with cigarets and vapes. he even tries to take a display outside, eventually spilling most of the contents on the sidewalk. now, the owner of the station says he was watching the burglary live via his security cameras. so far, no arrests have been made. okay up

for the celestial event has taken her to all seven continents. >> first one, north america, was the 1991. my second one in north america was the 2017, and this will be my third. but i've been to europe for one of them. i've now gone to africa twice. i've gone to australia three times. i've gone to antarctica twice. >> pereira also goes to schools and shares her passion for solar eclipses with students. >> all right. we'll start off with the weather. and as we look at the temperatures from today, i will say one of my favorite things i was told mike, this earlier about the solar eclipse is any eclipse, any kind of celestial event is people look up and they kind of go, oh wow, there's a lot going on out there. it's more than just, you know, head down looking at your phone. so that's i think that's the coolest thing about these eclipses, especially this one. it's got a lot of attention because it's it'll get totality in parts of the east coast, which is like we heard earlier, not going to happen in the united states for another 20

years. so these are the highs from today. highs tomorrow will be warmer by 5 or 6 degrees. and they'll continue to warm into the low 70s as we go into the middle of the week. and end of the week, we'll be into the low 80s, potentially a little bit of wind out there, a bit of a westerly flow or northwesterly flow. so that is spring and it's acting like it. and it's going to do that right through this week with temperatures a little above the average, maybe towards the end of the week. but we'll see. it might be just about average 23 mile an hour winds gusting at half moon bay, right now. so it's pretty windy. jet stream is well to the north. that's you see that big line, that fire hose. and that's going to generally start to as the days get longer, which they are, the jet stream recedes to the north where it wants to kind of just weaken. and that's what's happening now. it's less powerful than it was earlier in the season. temperatures right now warmer than they were last night. overnight lows tonight will be chilly down into the upper mid 30s, which is chilly and maybe some frost in some spots. this is the model for tomorrow morning. and then there's tomorrow evening. then

city today made specifically for the hot wheels live glow party show. pretty cool right? families were invited to see this unique truck this afternoon and to meet the driver behind the wheel before the warriors played against the utah jazz. the hot wheels glow party, by the way, takes place at chase center august 24th and 25th in the city of oakland. >> one organization is looking to bridge the divide between law enforcement and the black community. the nonprofit just got an assist from the warriors community foundation in the form of $75,000. ktvu is andre senior talked with the organization to see how the money is being used to repair trust between young black male students and police. >> a sign outside a small business on the corner of 62nd and international boulevard in east oakland reads okay program of oakland. okay, yeah, it's a

short name. long, though, on purpose. >> our goals in the program are to develop leadership and critical thinking skills, promote academic excellence, and reduce the high rates of incarceration and homicide among young african-american males. >> oakland police department sergeant robert smith is the okay program of oakland's chief operating officer. to understand the organization's roots. he cites a federal statistic showing the number one cause of death among black boys and men between the ages of one and 44 is homicide. i have a problem with that. and so sergeant smith, fellow police officers and other okay. program community members act as mentors to young black boys, recruiting them in middle and high school, working with them on their schools campuses. they make sure the boys are attending class, keeping their grades up and for some, making sure they stay out of trouble. >> many times we talk about validating some of the things they're doing positive, but education is one part of a dual approach to helping the boys achieve long time success. >> they're also taught life skills.

>> one of the most important things we do is on our saturday sessions. we have a great discussions about things that will help them change their lives. >> the sessions teach boys critical thinking and social skills. it's early every saturday morning, a day most kids like to sleep in. >> i want us to wake up early. i feel like i gained that skill waking up early. >> the leaders of this program will tell you all parts are important, but a key ingredient is breaking down the wall of mistrust, showing the boys that police officers can and do care about them and want them to succeed by introducing them to police officers that look like them, was very important to know that they are doing the job because they love the community and love the people of city, and that that they're not always there to hurt you or to incarcerate you. in addition to the police officers, there are probation officers who work with the boys. he is very personal to me. >> i'm very passionate about the work i do. it's being from oakland and going through the same things that these kids go through. >> there's also jamal blackwell, a volunteer who tells me he uses

his background of difficulty growing up in public housing as an educational tool. >> my emphasis is basically sharing some of the things that i can that i experienced in my life, and pass it on to these young men for one of the boys, the program provides a place of belonging. >> to be so honest, it's been great. like everybody's really nice in the program. >> for another, the lessons run deeper. it's been good because it keeps me out of trouble. >> how to de-escalate the situation and how to keep your emotions under check. >> and another. it's helping him plan for his future. >> the stakes for me is just like planning out my future, knowing what i want to do when i grow up. i would like a vote. >> while the program may not be extremely well known, it does have some star power. petrie bird, who some people may recognize as the bailiff from the judge judy show, is chairman of the board for the okay program. >> i literally have seen hundreds and hundreds of lives changed by the okay program. >> and now, with support from

the warriors community foundation, bird and his team can continue their work, devoting their lives to the young and vulnerable in hopes of building a brighter future for oakland. >> we're here to change the way they think and feel about life, right? we have a again. we have a responsibility to really, really help them, to be the best version of themselves. >> leaders of the program tell me they do much more than help these boys in their academic pursuits. they say some of them come from families that lack basic living necessities. so they tell me they donate things to those families, such as furniture. i'm andre senior, ktvu, fox two news. >> new at 11 tonight, the city of lafayette is holding an event tomorrow acknowledging local indigenous people. the ceremony unveils two significant projects that honor indigenous heritage and history. the first project is a new utility box wrap. it will be located at the corner of mount diablo boulevard and lafayette circle, and it pays tribute to the bay miwok people. it features the city's land acknowledgment adopted by the city council in the fall. the
