>> this is ktvu fox two news at noon. >> good afternoon i'm gasia mikaelian i'm andre senior. >> thank you for joining us. a big warm up today across the bay area. some inland communities hitting the 80 degree mark. as you look live at san francisco, which is going to be much cooler than the 80 degrees. if you like the sun, though, soak in as much as you can before more rain moves in later this week. ktvu meteorologist mark tamayo joins us now with a look at your forecast today. hey mark. >> hi there guys. yeah. sampling of a summer pattern for us today with the fog out toward the coast and temperatures inland warming back up nicely. so it's a short tum deal today and tomorrow you can see the average highs for your wednesday, mainly in the 60s, around 63 to 68 degrees, at least for these cities we will be above the average in fact quite a bit above the average for places like livermore, also out toward the san jose. even up into santa rosa. so we are warming up today and tomorrow. there's your eventual temperature range. we do have some patchy coastal fog, but it is warm inland. we talked about the above average readings, but then major cooling expected as we head toward your

friday forecast. here's that live camera. once again, we're looking out toward the golden gate bridge. from sutro tower, you can see out toward above the presidio and get the idea here. this is the marine layer. we talk about each and every day during the summertime months. it's a shallow marine layer, so where it is, it's locally chilly, but of course just a few miles away from this, we have temperatures warming up. here is the satellite picking up on that day, fog hanging out near portions of the coastline. as you can see, closer to san francisco, right around pacifica , out toward half moon bay as well. but lots of clear skies around the bay itself and also the inland neighborhoods. so right now, current numbers in the 70s for concord out toward fairfield, santa rosa, 70 degrees. but look at half moon bay with that fog presence having a big impact on their temperature, only 54 degrees. it is a quiet pattern over the next couple of days, but then another system that will bring cooler air and definitely some more rain back in the forecast. we'll have more on that coming up in just a little bit. >> thank you mark. now to big news in the world of sports.

about one of the best to ever coach the game of basketball. stanford legend tara vanderveer is retiring. ktvu bailey o'carroll was on campus, spoke with people who say they're thankful for all she's done for women and basketball. >> 38 years after she walked on to stanford's campus and took over as head coach of the women's basketball program, tara vanderveer is hanging it up. in her nearly 40 years here. she's earned a resume few could even dream of. she is over 1200 career wins, is a three time ncaa champion, 15 time pac 12 coach of the year, five time national coach of the year, and this year was officially crowned the winningest coach in the ncaa history in any sport, women's or men's, and she led the u.s. national team to a gold medal in the 96 olympic games. vanderveer started her career as an unpaid graduate assistant at ohio state, before she was hired by stanford in 1985. it was a time when the three point shot was not recognized in women's college basketball and the wnba

was still seven years away from its inception. i remember as a graduate student going to women's basketball games and actually playing scrimmages against women's basketball players. >> it was definitely a different era than if i could play against them. >> times have changed, and tara certainly had a hand in it. the day she announced her retirement was the same day that, for the first time in history, the women's college basketball national championship surpassed viewership of the men's by nearly 4 million viewers. in a statement on her retirement, vanderveer wrote, i've loved the game of basketball since i was a little girl and it has given me so much throughout my life. i hope i've been able to give at least a little bit back. she certainly has the impact she has made on basketball, specifically women's basketball is undeniable, as evidenced by the people she's worked with on the court. >> i love tara, she's amazing, and we've connected quite a bit in the bay, she's come to our practices. i've seen her down on their campus, i have so much

respect and admiration for her and my initial reaction is, i'm thrilled for her. she can go water ski, and she loves to water ski. i know, so, congrats tara on a on an amazing career and those she's never met but inspired. >> i'm a scientist and she's inspired me to just continue pushing on and showing people that you can be the best at what you do, no matter what. >> so is the program gets set to write its next chapter with a new coach, fans have a message for tara. >> thank you for honestly leaving your legacy in a lasting impact on not just basketball players, but fans across the country. thank you. >> you've done a lot for stanford. you've done a lot for the players over the years and enjoy your vacation. >> as for what's next for this program, while the university is currently in negotiations with kate pay, who is a longtime associate coach in this program, she also played here under tara. we talked to fans about her. they say they know that the program and the greatness that comes along with stanford women's basketball is in good hands under kate at stanford.

i'm bailey o'carroll, ktvu, fox two news. >> well, surveillance video appears to show the same man vandalizing the same mosque in san francisco twice. and as ktvu is, amanda quintana tells us, this all happened as the muslim community was observing the holy month of ramadan. >> it's a big day in the muslim community after like 30 days for like fasting every day. >> mosque. everything after that day feels so good. >> hundreds attending this eid celebration at the holiday inn in san francisco, one of many events to mark the end of ramadan. >> it's kind of like a celebration for like the family to spend, to spend the day together and join the. we joined food to pray together. we like make memories together. >> but what's fresh in many minds is recent islamophobic hate and tension stirred by the san francisco community is very polarized at this moment. the windows at this mosque on sutter street are still broken after

apparently the same man came back at least twice in the past week. >> it is a scary thing. it is a horrific thing and we want to feel safe. >> surveillance video shows a man smashing windows of the mosque with a skateboard. this happened on april 3rd. this same man reportedly came back days later, broke more windows and then went into the mosque yelling islamophobic rhetoric. he allegedly got into an altercation, threatened people and wrote you will burn in #### on the walls. people think that islamophobia doesn't exist, but in reality it happens every single day. >> a lot of, a lot of incidents being unreported and the truth is that police have other issues to worry about, and we're really asking for them, and the city to prioritize the community and make sure that there's more resources and the community is protected. >> aseel farrah, who works with the city's office of racial equity, has been going to this mosque since he was a kid. he says he wants to see more of a

police presence at places of worship like this, and events like the eid celebration, before something even more violent happens. >> we don't have time to wait for those scenarios to happen for us to take action, but instead there's a sense of urgency right now. >> and he wants people to try to understand the muslim community better. >> muslims are being looked at as hateful people or, terrorists of that sort. but i see peaceful people and i see a community that cares and just wants to live in harmony in san francisco . >> amanda quintana ktvu, fox two news. >> new at noon governor newsom is touting the latest results of a chp undercover sting operation in the east bay. according to the governor, over the past eight weeks, chp has recovered 414 stolen vehicles, made 181 arrests and seized over 30 crime linked firearms. suspects were arrested on various charges, including possession of stolen property, auto theft,

transportation of narcotics, dui and felony gun possession. this was done through an ongoing operation in oakland and other east bay cities. >> inflation coming in hotter than expected for the third month in a row. edward lawrence is at the white house with a breakdown of the numbers. >> the latest consumer price index readings show no improvement on inflation. last month, prices were higher than expected in march. now the consumer price index rose 4/10 of a percent from february. it was also up 4/10 of a percent, excluding food and energy. both numbers match previous month's readings. now for the year ending in march, consumer prices rose 3.5% and core inflation on an annual basis was up 3.8. both of those readings are stronger than expected. >> these are scary numbers. if i were if i were in the fed, i would not be looking for a cut. so we'll see what they want to do. >> all fed chair jerome powell says that he needs to see inflation retreating

dreamliner jets. >> boeing once again facing an investigation by the federal aviation administration after a whistleblower reportedly claimed the company took shortcuts when assembling its 777 and 787 dreamliner jets. the boeing engineer alleges crews did not properly fasten fuselages on board, an issue he says could be catastrophic. as the aircraft ages. >> these aircraft are tested beyond belief in construction and design, and there's nothing wrong with somebody pointing out what they see to be a problem, and the correct response to that is to look into it. >> the new york times reporting the complaint was filed in january and made public this week. the whistleblower says boeing ultimately transferred him out of the 787 program. boeing denying the allegation, saying the issues raised, quote, have been subject to rigorous examination under faa oversight. but the report is the latest trouble for boeing, which

currently faces a 90 day deadline from the faa to outline a quality control plan. >> we're already about a month into that to put together a plan demonstrating that they can hit a different level of quality control, and we're not going to let them increase their production until they do. >> it's also causing major problems for airlines that are depending on new planes from the company. aero dynamic advisory estimates us carriers will receive about 32% fewer aircraft this year due to the delays. boeing's ceo has been asked to testify at a senate hearing next week regarding these whistleblower claims at chicago's o'hare international airport. kelly saberi, ktvu, fox two news. >> a self-driving car company, cruise is hoping to learn new safety information as it takes steps to get its robotaxi fleet back on city streets. the company announced yesterday it plans to resume its operations starting in phoenix. for now, it will use human driven vehicles without autonomous systems engaged. cruise says it aims to collect traffic data such as

speed limits, stop signs, traffic lights and right turn only lanes. it will also be done to help its robotaxi understand location and road features. it's unclear when or if manual operations will extend to other cities. cruise suspended operations last october after one of the company's cars dragged a pedestrian who was hit by another driver in san francisco. >> all right, turning now to your forecast. ktvu meteorologist mark tamayo is here with a look at the heat that's expected and hitting the inland areas right now and the cooler weather on the coast. yeah, definitely. >> it feels like july or august pattern out there with those microclimates starting to resurface. and we'll be talking about this forecast will be recycling it quite a bit over the coming months with the cool temperatures coast side and the warm temperatures inland. but still we get a break from the rainfall. so it's a nice day to get outside and especially around the bay for the inland spots. temperatures will be warming up, so it is a warmer forecast for today and into your thursday. and then a sharp drop off in those numbers as we head toward friday. so that's kind of

the weather story kind of seeing these contrast warmer for today and thursday and inland and then cooler friday and saturday, 50s and some 60s and some rain showers making a comeback as early as friday night. here's our live camera. interesting shot here. looking out from san francisco from sutro tower looking out toward the golden gate bridge. so yeah, we have quite a bit of some fog hanging out near portions of the coast out toward ocean beach, and kind of that one ribbon of fog pushing locally into the bay. so where it's foggy, obviously it's chilly, but away from that marine influence, it is warming up nicely. here's a look at the satellites this afternoon. the loop. over the past few hours, you see the clouds hanging out near the coast and look at the half moon bay. temperature 54 degrees. compare that to 72. in san jose and livermore. those areas will be close to 80 degrees later on this afternoon. oakland 69 and san francisco. one site there showing you 68 degrees. so just a few miles even into the bay, we're talking about some mild conditions. so here's a satellite and you can see the quiet weather pattern up above. right now there is a storm out here. that speckled

cloud cover that's a sure sign of cold air that will eventually work its way back into the bay area over the over the next couple of days. not for today, not for tomorrow, but by friday and into the weekend. so here's the overall weather pattern this area of high pressure has been building in. so this keeps us dry. and for parts of the bay area it's a warm pattern as well. so patchy coastal fog but away from the coast some 70s and some 80s. and then here's that system dropping in from the north on saturday. it'll definitely be cooler. rainfall making a comeback as well, and this could lead to possibly some sierra snowfall as well. be watching out for that. but even before this time frame, by friday we're going to bring in some more clouds, cooler temperatures, and by friday night we could be tracking some rain bands approaching our coastline. so here we are today. kind of a maybe some hazy sunshine and still some patchy fog for the shoreline. thursday is looking fairly nice. we could have some patchy coastal fog out there. and here's your friday. definitely some more clouds in the in the bay area. a sharp drop off in those numbers. you'll notice the change. and then here we go with that rain band especially by friday night. this is 11 p.m. friday. and then

legend holds many records, including the most wins by any coach in college basketball history. 1216 victories. vanderveer has won three national championships and led her teams to 14 final fours in her 38 seasons at stanford. just a few months ago, she reflected on her career. >> i've enjoyed every minute of it. i just i love coaching at stanford and, you know, basketball is just such a passion of mine that it has gone really fast. but it's been fun. >> vanderveer coached the us women's basketball team to a gold medal in the 1996 olympics. in 2011, she was enshrined into the basketball hall of fame. she will stay with stanford athletics in an advisory role. news conference is set to get underway at 1:00 and we will stream it for you live at ktvu .com. a gray whale was spotted off the northern california coast entangled in a fishing

net. ktvu jana katsuyama tells us that the video of the whale is bringing wildlife officials and members of the marine mammal center together as they work to track down the whale. >> the gray whale was spotted off the coast by thornton state beach in daly city. crews with know fisheries worked tuesday to try and help the giant mammal that was entangled in a net. >> it's just saddens me because, we all have to live on this planet together. the whale had been entangled in the fishing gear for weeks, and noaa says it was first spotted down in southern california near long beach. >> it was spotted by one of the whale watch boats off southern california. >> the noaa shared this photo with ktvu showing the whale's body. they say unlike the usual entanglements involving rope, this is a much more severe entanglement involving a gill net. >> gill net is a very dense mesh and tied twisted around the tail is very difficult to try to

remove. >> noaa's west coast marine mammal stranding network says the whale was too skittish to attempt a disentanglement, so they put a satellite tracker on the whale on march 23rd. they followed it for a while, but the tracker fell off. gray whales usually migrate at this time of year from breeding grounds in southern california to feeding grounds north near alaska. it had moved northward and was spotted again april 3rd offshore near piedras blancas, and then again here off the coast of thornton beach, where the team tuesday once again approached the whale to attach another tracker and buoys. >> they verified that the entanglement is still there, largely in the way it was down off southern california. and, that's it's distinguished now by some floating their bright colored, balls. the floating buoy know officials are asking people to call their hotline at one 877 s.o.s. whale. >> if you see the whale, they

say, do not approach it. they are hoping to locate it and then go back out on the water and boats to try and disentangle it with some special equipment. in daly city, jana katsuyama ktvu, fox two news. >> we're learning the identity of a nine year old girl killed in a crash over the weekend in the east bay. dana fernandez or hernandez tapia of oregon, was killed early sunday morning when the suv she was in crashed at the junction of interstate 680 and highway 242, in concord. four women inside the vehicle were hospitalized. the male driver left the scene. there is no word yet from the highway patrol on what caused the crash, or whether the driver has been found. the former san jose police officer, who's at the center of a racist text message scandal, is asking a judge to move his case to a venue hundreds of miles away. mark mcnamara, a white former police officer, was sued after being accused of excessive use of force. he was seen on video in march of 2022 shooting a black man who was actually trying to prevent a robbery at a

restaurant, according to court documents. mcnamara sent racist and homophobic text messages after the shooting. his lawyer is asking that an upcoming civil trial be moved to the eureka area, fearing that mcnamara will not get a fair trial in the bay area because of extensive media coverage. but the victim's attorneys oppose that. >> that's complete nonsense, there have been big cases, major cases that, you know, have even more coverage, national coverage that still take place at the venue in which the incidents, you know, have happened. and it's just another method used to delay the trial and to delay the justice that mr. green has been waiting over two years to get. >> right now, the case is tied up in appeals, and it's not clear when a judge might rule on the request to move the case happening today. >> oakland police will present their proposed budget to the city administration. the department's working to address staffing issues, opd command staff told us council safety meeting. there are currently 708

officers on the job. the current police budget authorizes 712. the academy has 14 officers who are set to graduate next month. >> opd is not unique in the fact that we, along with other law enforcement agencies, have had a difficult time recruiting people into our academies. >> the police department budget is about $358 million for the current fiscal year. next year's budget is about 364 million. the san jose city council has made good on its promise to add an extra layer of safety around the city's schools. leaders have approved two ordinances banning unhoused encampments and vehicles within 150ft of a school. ktvu south bay reporter jesse gary explains what both proposals mean for homeless encampments and their criminalizing the unhoused people. >> there's no place for them to go. >> longtime advocate gail osmer gave council members an earful tuesday afternoon at city hall. this as the body of ten plus mayor matt mahan prepared to

pass two ordinances they say protects children while we are working to build basic, dignified shelters, safe parking sites and more affordable housing, they should not have to deal with those conditions right next to their school every day. those conditions are homeless encampments near public and private schools in san jose last year, students at three schools reached out to council members complaining there's a safety issue, including incidents of those unhoused residents making their way onto campus during the school day and break ins captured on our security cameras. >> these incidents have cost our school tens of thousands of dollars. i have to ensure that i'm focusing on my surroundings at all times in response, city staff spent nearly a year crafting an ordinance barring encampments closer than 150ft to a school. >> three school areas will be selected as test sites. many council members say the action helps ease the minds of school aged children, who worry when confronting large encampments.

the council also took action to prevent large vehicles, such as rvs, from parking near schools. >> a little bit of the wild west where people are going to park wherever they want to park because nobody's going to do anything about it, especially oversize vehicles where you can't see around them and i think, perhaps we can prioritize , roadway safety. >> this two passed unanimously. the mayor says the city needs to step up providing services, including completion of a safe parking site at berryessa by investing in lower barrier interim solutions. >> we reduced unsheltered homelessness 10% year over year. we have another 784 interim units coming online. >> but some south bay unhoused advocates say until the broad array of services are in place, the most vulnerable will continue to suffer. >> i think it's just a tragedy. it's just horrible. where are they going to go? let's get them into berryessa first. let's get

this morning say the problems with the fafsa are affecting at least 40% of the forms submitted, and that has led to students receiving admission letters from colleges. but having no idea how much financial aid they will have to cover the costs. beginning today, internet service providers will be required to publish specific details about their broadband plans. the federal communications commission has been lobbying companies to openly show information such as prices, fees and service speeds. these labels are intended to allow consumers to shop for deals, avoid hidden fees and find plans to better meet their needs. labels are similar to ones you see regarding the nutritional value of food. they'll be posted at stores and on websites showing monthly prices, equipment rental fees, data rates, broadband speeds and links to any bundled discounts. the biden administration is finalizing the first national rules limiting so-called forever chemicals in drinking water. >> the synthetic chemicals are found in thousands of products designed to be resistant to water and oil, such as nonstick pans, food packaging and dental

you can see, they have been warming up and it looks like today, tomorrow, two warmer days of the week, especially away from the shoreline. and then a sharp drop off in those numbers by friday as a as another system approach of the region from the north. so that will bring in cooler air. and we're talking about some more rain back in the forecast as well. but today and tomorrow you can see the temperature range from the 60s all the way to the 70s and the 80s, keeping it cool for the shoreline. but most areas a good 5 to 10 degrees up above the average. here is the satellite where you can pick out the low clouds and fog. this is the satellite loop just over the past three hours. and you get the sense here where we have the fog out toward portions of the coastline from half moon bay, out toward ocean beach. but across the bay, we have a clear skies out toward oakland, walnut creek, and livermore. and as a result, temperatures are warming up nicely in the 70s for those neighborhoods. san jose, 72 and one site in san francisco 68. half moon bay. though in the upper 50s. here's a satellite as we expand the view out here in the pacific, you'll notice that not too much happening overhead. in fact, we have a kind of big
