order from a judge to stop the transfers. and the alameda county district attorney announces new charges against a man suspected in a hit and run that left a 73 year old woman dead. >> this is ktvu fox two news at 730 and good wednesday evening to you. >> thanks so much for joining me for tonight for the news at 730. i'm heather holmes and we begin tonight right here in oakland with an up close look at a city run program that offers help in nonviolent emergencies with responders who are not law enforcement. ktvu crystal bailey tonight rode along with the response team and shows us how it works. >> we're going to come back as soon as i hear that beds available. >> josh hayes and cora shoots are a unique, kind of first responders. >> we would call them beforehand, like let them know that you're coming in. >> they're one of the teams with the mobile assistance community responders of oakland known as macro. the street teams responding to nonviolent, non-emergency situations, using

compassion to meet people where they're at and the way the program is designed. >> you know, it's we're not enforcement agents. >> it's not threatening. >> we come offering things. >> hayes is a community intervention specialist and shoots is an emt. >> they provided me with support and medical and support and phone numbers. so i could get the necessary medication that i need to make it. >> at just two years old, the program is having a growth spurt by march 2024. the teams responded more than 17,500 times. there are 11 responders now, but by the end of april, the program will triple its staff. there were four macro teams out on wednesday, with the goal to double that by the time the rookies are ready to hit the streets this summer, the city announced the macro phone number 510 40 for macro just a few weeks ago, and it's already bringing in more calls. >> we want this to be an outlet so that we're not clogging up the 911 system. and that the

right teams are responding to the right calls and the teams don't just sit around and wait for dispatch if there's not a call coming in, they're out looking for one. >> you see, people laid out on the sidewalk, or people that look like they might be in pain or people that are sleeping in precarious positions, and we would stop for them. >> shoots and hayes have helped build the program since day one. >> you're feeling okay today? no medical complaints and they say they'll be here to train new staff later this month. >> that always feels good to know that, we made a difference. >> i'm watching it work, and that's what keeps me here. >> now, this team says they get between 6 and 10 calls a day, sometimes up to 15, but they say they answer 100% of the calls they get during interactions. >> the team takes feedback from people they're serving, using it to inform the way they coordinate future services. >> it can take multiple touches, multiple interventions, multiple attempts just to get that sliver of opportunity to get somebody to help. they need. >> crystal bailey, ktvu, fox two news. >> inmates at the troubled

women's prison in dublin are now being transported to other federal prisons across the country. busses were seen leaving fci dublin today, two days before the facility is expected to close now. on monday, the bureau of prisons decided to shut down this facility where stories of sex crimes and retaliation have plagued the prison. while this news came as a surprise to some of the women, their families and the federal judge who ordered special oversight over the prison 12 days ago, one father said his daughter was transported before noon today, and he says he has no idea where she's going. >> busses came in the facility, loaded a number of people into the busses. they were not allowed to take, their belongings or that much belongings with them, like one pair of pants. so many, shirts, etc. sources tell ktvu that all 600 women will likely be moved out of the facility by friday.

>> now, a judge has ordered a pause on the transfers until the special master could review the closure, but the bureau of prisons claims it has authority to continue with the transfers. a crackdown on organized retail theft has led to nearly 500 arrests, according to a state task force. the task force, led by the chp, has recovered more than 160,000 stolen goods worth more than $4 million. all of this since january. that's nearly half of all the goods recovered in all of last year. you're looking at some of the items here. 474 people have been arrested. the chp says they were able to use every resource available to, quote, dismantle these criminal networks and hold them accountable for their actions. new. at 730 tonight, the sonoma county board of supervisors voted to drop a consulting company used for supporting homeless populations. county leaders approved a measure to discontinue do business with dema management and consulting. the board wants

county employees to fill the gap and manage the two homeless sites that were overseen by dema. the decision comes after the press democrat reported inconsistencies with the for profit companies billing practices. as we have some new information tonight on what investigators believe caused a house fire overnight in santa rosa. when fire crews arrived, smoke was coming out of the one story home there on hillsborough circle. fire officials say it appears discarded. only oily rags caused the fire. the people inside got out safely thanks to smoke alarms. the fire department says the smoke alarms and a call to 911 kept this fire from spreading. fire crews in san jose were also busy overnight with a house fire. the two alarm fire was first reported at the home on locust street near west virginia street, not far from washington elementary school. the fire caused some street closures in the area. the cause of this fire is under investigation. all right. homicide investigators in the east bay reporting a major

break in a double murder case. as our crime reporter henry lee tells us tonight, investigators are still searching for clues in that killing of a woman and her adult daughter. >> this is a big development in this. in this case, a major break in a double homicide investigation by the san pablo police department, a body found in the oakland estuary last fall , now confirmed to be that of 74 year old kay tran, who police say was killed by her son in law. >> that man, 41 year old fook vo, is also suspected of killing his wife, 40 year old toll, but her body has not been found. san pablo police spokeswoman peggy chow says vo was already being prosecuted in both killings. >> the suspect was previously charged for two counts of murder without the recovery of either victim. >> back in september, an unidentified woman's body in undergarments was found in the estuary. but it wasn't until march that dna testing confirmed her identity. >> detectives received that notification and confirmation that the dna evidence was a

match. >> authorities believe vo killed both victims in the family's home in san pablo early in september, then tried to cover it up by reporting them missing. i've learned san pablo police believe vo took the bodies with him on a small boat that left the encinal boat ramp in alameda , sources tell me. police believe he dumped both bodies in the water, but so far, his wife's body has not surfaced at this time. >> her, her body and her location remains unconfirmed. >> but the discovery of his mother in law's body strengthens the case somewhat against vo. i've confirmed with the da this won't change their decision not to seek the death penalty. now that they've found the body, though, this is a game changer. but ktvu legal analyst michael cardoza says the da still has to confirm the cause of death and prove that it was vo and not some random stranger who killed at least the mother in law. >> they've got to be able to make that connection. they can welcome up and say it was blunt trauma. somebody hit her on the head. that's what killed her. or

it was a fixation. someone strangled her. doesn't mean it was him. >> the defendant is being held at contra costa county jail in martinez. authorities say the case against him will proceed with or without his wife's body in san pablo. henry lee ktvu, fox two news well, the fbi says there appears to be no credible threat after several schools across the east bay received a concerning email at 605 this morning, an email was sent to nearly a dozen districts in both alameda and contra costa counties demanding that all russian prisoners and captives be released from u.s. custody, or else a bomb would be detonated on campus. >> school officials contacted police as well as federal authorities, and after checking the campuses, it was determined the threats were not real and schools were kept open. new. at 730 tonight, the alameda county district attorney's office today announcing some new charges against a man accused of hitting and killing a pedestrian. 73 year-old amelia martinez roa was hit while walking in a crosswalk

along international boulevard. this was back in 2022. prosecutors say she was hit by a white hummer that drove away afterwards. well jose perez has been charged with one count of vehicular manslaughter and gross negligence and one count of hit and run and arraignment for perez is set for april 25th, coming up tonight at 730. new details on the latest effort by bay area law enforcement to get more guns off the streets. plus, what we're learning about a frightening episode at the san francisco zoo where a grizzly bear escaped its enclosure. >> and in bay area weather. look at this perfect timing. looking out toward the wednesday sunset, you can see the right portion of your screen. we are in the clear this evening. another warm day in the forecast for tomorrow, and then some changes as we head toward the weekend.

firearms off the streets and anonymous gun buyback event is planned for south san francisco next month. those turning in the weapons between $50 and $250 for bringing firearms that are unloaded and securely stored in the trunk of their vehicle. free gun locks will also be given out that buyback is scheduled for may 4th, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at 1050 mission road. again, that's in south san francisco. new reports about a close call between a bear and a zookeeper are prompting some safety concerns at the san francisco zoo, according to the san francisco chronicle. a 500 pound grizzly bear escaped its den last may and chased the zookeeper and another employee, but they eventually they.

eventually, those employees were able to coax the grizzly back into its habitat. zoo officials say the entrance was left unlatched, allowing the bear to get out, and although no one was hurt, according to the report, this was one of several incidents in recent years in which employee safety or animal welfare at the zoo has been compromised. in a statement, the zoo said its past federal inspections for more than 25 years, the san francisco zoo also says it has numerous safety protocols to ensure the safety of their staff, as well as safety committees responsible for reviewing staff concerns that also evaluate the situation and resolve any issues. one of san francisco's most famous chefs has just earned a spot on time magazine's most influential people list. dominique crenn is the first female chef in the u.s. to earn three michelin stars for her world renowned atelier crenn in san francisco. she also owns petite crenn and

this afternoon. another round of 60s 70s in san francisco and a few 80s out towards san jose and morgan hill. here's the satellite. no major storms to speak up for us. we just have some scattered high clouds drifting into california across here in the bay area and also down towards southern california as well. so we'll hold on to partly cloudy skies for tonight. i'll show you the latest forecast model. it does want to bring in some more high cloud cover tomorrow for your thursday. let's go ahead and check out some of the current numbers for the 7:00 hour. it is fairly mild in a few spots. still some 70s in santa rosa, concord, livermore and san jose. half moon bay has cooled off to 55 degrees, but we still have this beautiful sunset. this is our south bay camera showing you a batch of high clouds kind of drifting overhead, but not enough to block that nice sunset for this evening. so we are heading into a nice wednesday evening as we take a look at our forecast headlines. tomorrow. partly sunny, it is mild to warm . and then we're talking about that cool down as we head into friday. overnight temperatures to start things off. tomorrow will be most areas in the 50s. we could have a few upper 40s out there up in portions of the

north bay. so here's the forecast model and then into the afternoon hours, these colors begin to brighten up, reflecting the warmer temperatures. and there's the eventual temperature range from the mid 60s to the 70s. and the warmest locations tomorrow afternoon, once again right around 80 degrees for your thursday afternoon. all because this guy, this area of high pressure has been strengthening. it's been keeping us dry. so it's a mild to warm thursday. no big changes out there. this is the change we're watching into friday. we'll see a kind of a dip in the jet stream. it'll kind of squash this area of high pressure a bit. so that sends temperatures down into friday. no big changes for saturday. then we could have a little bit of another warm up headed our way. nothing major into sunday. here's the forecast model tomorrow. does want to bring in some high cloud cover. so it won't be completely clear. blue sky for your thursday. partly sunny conditions and then into your friday. notice this forecast model is kind of picking up on that fog first thing friday morning that could impact that will impact the temperatures by friday. take a look at the numbers for tomorrow. san francisco. we've cooled off a little bit, but

eyes at marshall beach last night, the chp deployed its helicopter to help with the rescue. fire officials say the man became ill while on the beach, preventing him from accessing the trail before the tide came in. he was stabilized by paramedics right there on the beach, but later sent to a hospital for treatment. new at 730 tonight, the project to overhaul a north bay highway is receiving an economic shot in the arm. the federal highway administration is allocating $20 million to the highway 37 project. it will go toward widening a flood prone ten mile stretch of the highway between sears point and mare island. the project is already topping $430 million. those federal funds are part of almost $1 billion being awarded nationwide. the san francisco municipal

transportation agency, warning about a parking enforcement crackdown that is coming to the city. director jeffrey tumlin making the announcement at an agency meeting last night. he says parking officers will be conducting enforcement sweeps across the city. it's all in an effort, he says, to realize the city's vision zero initiative, hoping to end traffic fatalities and injuries. dublin says this is the first time the parking control officers have been fully staffed since before the pandemic. bart says it is refunded hundreds of thousands of dollars worth of fares from those old paper tickets. bart stopped accepting those types of tickets last november as they made the move to clipper cards. since then, the agency says they have processed more than 4500 claims totaling nearly $409 $90,000. they will only accept tickets with a balance over $1 or smaller. tickets can be donated to local nonprofits. bart says there is no deadline for requesting a paper ticket refund. the yosemite is set to

around oakland's lake merritt, but the work is expected to take a while, according to the city. for more than a month now, vandals have damaged vintage light poles and broken into curb utility boxes for the copper wiring. that's inside. ten poles have been taken down and 34 curb boxes have been damaged. the city says it has deployed teams to repair the downed light poles and install temporary lights, because it will take a contractor time to make those new posts. new at 730 tonight, a popular camping spot in yosemite national park finally set to reopen after a five year closure . the park's high sierra camps are due to reopen this summer, the chronicle reports. they had been closed in recent years due to heavy snowfall, then pandemic restrictions. the camps include tent cabins, showers, meal service and boast backcountry type camping alongside those modern conveniences.
