bring more attention to the moms and their babies suffering in gaza. the group also says it is raising money to support a neonatal department at a hospital in rafah. ktvu south bay reporter lamonica peters gives us a look at the rally at the corner of el camino real and embarcadero road. >> the vigil for gaza held its weekly rally to call for an immediate ceasefire. some women at this rally, held on mother's day, spoke about what they say mothers in gaza experience. >> they have no way to go. the hospitals are bombed. there's no anesthetic. if they need a c-section, there's no recovery time. after birth. >> i feel extremely sad, extremely sad, and i wish them peace and i wish them some form of relief. >> the united nations says 70% of those killed in gaza have been women and children, and about a million women and girls

have been displaced. women also now have severely reduced access to health care. >> as a mom, the stress of having a newborn baby in normal times, it's a lot for any mom, to do that during war and during what's happening now, like in rafah. i mean, no one has housing. >> the group says it started a mothers day campaign to raise $5,000. the money will help fund a new neonatal intensive care unit for premature babies at the kuwaiti hospital in rafah. this mother of four says she comes to this ceasefire rally each week because she cares about humanity. >> i'm here not only because i'm a mother, i'm here because i'm a i'm a person and i care about people. i'm from israel and i don't want anyone to suffer. i don't want my people to suffer, and i don't want my neighbors to suffer. my partners. right. the palestinians are my partners. we should find a way to live

together. >> the un also says that nearly all of gaza's population is facing severe hunger, and that further conflict in rafah will only cripple humanitarian efforts. lamonica peters ktvu, fox two news all right. >> lamonica, thank you. time is 404 now. over the weekend, pro-palestinian protesters targeted graduation ceremonies at universities across the country. comedian jerry seinfeld heard both boos and cheers when he delivered the keynote speech at duke university. dozens of students actually left their seats when seinfeld was speaking. he's been an active supporter of israel throughout the war. >> i totally admire the ambitions of your generation to create a more just and inclusive society. now. >> there were also protests at the university of wisconsin-madison and the university of texas at austin. that's where students holding palestinian flags were cleared from the area. >> in southern california,

pro-palestinian protesters gathered ahead of the rescheduled graduation ceremony at pomona college. ppe de la fuente, free palestine. demonstrators chanted outside the ceremony for hours as students and parents started to arrive for graduation. pomona's college's commencement was originally supposed to be on the claremont campus. it was moved 30 miles away because of a pro-palestinian encampment at the university. the protest sparked frustration, but there is also some support for the demonstrators. >> drive all the way down downtown los angeles in the middle of the rush hour traffic. face these characters, which we could have faced up at the other location. it makes no sense. >> these kids worked so hard to make it, and to be here and have this special moment, taking that away from people that worked so hard to be here is just not right. >> we have an encampment in milwaukee, and i have participated and definitely we

see the importance of raising the justice issues. >> lapd called in to break up the protest. officers say it was growing larger and becoming a more volatile situation. it's still unclear if any arrests were made. >> our time is 406. in tel aviv, israel, relatives of hostages lit candles and they stood in silence as israel marked its memorial day for fallen soldiers and victims of the attack by hamas back on october seventh, 1200 people were killed, 250 others were taken hostage. hamas still holds about 100 people captive, along with the remains of more than 30. we are here every day to accompany the families in their plight, for the hostages, for asking from our government to release them as soon as possible. >> every day that passes is a matter of life or death for them

now. >> since the war began, more than eight months ago, more than 34,000 palestinians have been killed, many of them women and children, according to local health officials and don't forget, you can find complete coverage of the war in gaza and the reaction from here in the united states online. just go to our website, ktvu.com. >> family and friends are mourning the loss of two longtime east bay political leaders who were killed over the weekend in a car crash. community members in oakland gathered at the lake merritt amphitheater to memorialize peggy moore and her wife, hope wood. the couple died in a crash friday night in san diego county. throughout their lives, they built solid ties in oakland and beyond, working with former president barack obama, advising former oakland mayor libby schaaf, and even starting their own political consulting firm at the candlelight vigil, former colleagues remembered their work and their kindness came out to

take care of each other, talk to each other and remember their love and their contributions that they made to all of us individually, but also to the city. peggy moore was 60 years old. her wife, hope was 48. oakland's new police chief starts his new job today. officially, chief floyd mitchell started the job saturday, but today will be his first day in his new office. chief mitchell has more than 30 years experience in law enforcement and most recently was the police chief in lubbock, texas. he succeeds lauren armstrong, who was fired more than a year ago. we expect to hear from oakland's new police chief later this morning. >> our time now. 409 better news this morning for today's commute between sonoma and solano counties. eastbound highway 37 has been reopened. ten hours earlier than expected by caltrans, which has been repaving a seven mile stretch of that highway. now next weekend, the last of the repavement work on highway 37 will take place

between the highway 121 interchange in rural sonoma county and highway 29 in vallejo. all of that is weather permitting, weather permitting. >> well, let's take a look at where we should be for this month of may. first off, let's take a look at the average high temperatures in and around our microclimates. santa rosa typically at 75 degrees. san francisco 64. mid 70 s in throughout the eastern portion of our bay area in the tri valley and mid 70s across the santa clara valley. now average rainfall. i just took a look at some of the statistics for the tri valley, and we are at 0.77. so we're doing okay. and the next shot of precipitation, it's a long stretch, but it looks like it could be two weeks from today. but that's a long way to go. right now it's a gray slate. clouds are down to 1000ft not obscure. and visibility. but we do have visibility at six miles in santa rosa, seven miles in half moon bay yesterday. at this hour, we were down to one mile

visibility in santa rosa. so an improving situation this morning with earlier burn off today, you can bank on cooler conditions around the seashore, mild temperatures in our inland areas and then as we forge ahead for your tuesday coastal clouds and then sunshine, the week ahead will be quiet. it is 48 degrees in novato at this early hour, otherwise mid 50s and cupertino, campbell and in sunnyvale, 53. in concord and clayton, temperatures are averaging up to about five degrees cooler than 24 hours ago, and the winds are blustery out towards travis and fairfield. but under ten for the most part, these winds will be picking up 5 to 15mph later today, ushering the pollen around. yes, it's been an awful allergy season and it will remain to do so due to the tree count. so we have that gray slate right there. the clouds are hugging the media at sea shore, all because of this trough to the north of us. enhancing that marine layer, bringing down the temperatures

6:00 yesterday morning. one person experienced minor injuries but did not need to go to the hospital. the fire was out quickly, but firefighters did stay on scene for several hours to make sure there were no hot spots. surrounding streets were back open at about 8 a.m. the cause of the fire is still under investigation. >> our time is 414. in west oakland, the community reacting to a weekend fire that badly damaged a church. it happened friday night at the saint andrews missionary baptist church, 27th and west street. more than 60 firefighters battled the huge flames for hours. investigators say the fire spread from a vacant home next to the church. many church members hope that historic building can be rebuilt. >> it's sad. there's a lot of history here. like i said, i spent the first 15 years of my life here at this church and. and, i'm glad to see you survived. although it was a lot of damage. >> firefighters say no one was hurt in the fire. investigators are still looking for the cause

of the fire in east bay. >> family is grieving this morning after their five year old child drowned near bethel island. a diver found the boy in the water inside a cove. they believe he was in the water for about 15 minutes. rescuers performed cpr and rushed him to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead. authorities say the child got to the water through a backyard next to the shoreline. >> i haven't really noticed whether there could be better security measures, to tell you the truth, i think it's, you know, most of the most of the most of it is really up to the homeowners to sort of make sure their particular areas are secure. >> the boy was reportedly visiting his grandparents on the island at the time. >> our time is 415, well ahead of the hot summer season. families should make sure they know about water safety tips. it only takes a moment for a mistake to occur, and about 1000 children a year reported to die from drowning. to keep your children safe, put them in a swim class, get lessons, keep a

close eye on them near the water, and always prepare for a water emergency. >> if you have a life jacket on a child, absolutely arms reach at all times, and then the other thing get them in swim lessons. get them, get them comfortable in the water. make it enjoyable, do swim team, build your skills, those kind of things. but parental supervision, on top of lifeguards that are on site is huge to water safety. >> now children between the ages of one and four are at the highest risk of drowning in a pool or in in the ocean. many deaths can occur when children have unexpected access to water. >> today, uc berkeley is hosting its first emerging tech advocacy summit. organizers say they will train tech startup founders how to effectively advocate for themselves to policymakers and to the public. there will be six speakers who will each give a six minute talk, followed by a panel that will guide a discussion on what made the speakers effective. the speakers

come from a range of backgrounds. the free event will be held on the uc berkeley campus. >> our time is 417. artificial intelligence now being used inside factories and warehouses to cut the risk of accidents on the job. now these programs use artificial intelligence to scan thousands of hours of security video in just minutes. then it highlights potential dangers and recommends safety improvements. the software could identify tripping obstacles or even watch if a worker risks hurting themselves by lifting heavy loads the wrong way. >> a set of tools that help companies understand the risks that their employees are exposed to and really engineer that risk out of the facility to prevent accidents from happening. >> now, the prize for software like this can range from a few thousand dollars to a few hundred thousand dollars. however, some workplace accidents like a back injury, can sometimes cost much more

than that. over time. >> strong storms swept across parts of the country this weekend, leaving a path of damage. this was the scene in central florida downed trees, broken fences and debris covering the yards and roads. the winds reached 60mph. as cleanup efforts began, people in the community showed up to help. >> at about six, seven, eight guys showed up to help, and then some neighbors heard our chainsaws and came over and said, hey, can you help us? so it was pretty cool just seeing everybody jump together and help each other. >> in northeast oklahoma, an ef four tornado ripped through that area. many homes there were completely leveled. authorities in florida and oklahoma say construction crews are desperately needed to work on the homes that are still standing. >> wow, pam, that leads us right to roberta gonzalez in for steve this morning talking more about weather and particularly here in the bay area. how do we look? >> we look a lot better than that. one good thing about what

happens in oklahoma. my son graduated from the university of oklahoma. and what i notice whenever i would go out there and also visit the national weather service. their headquarters is located on the campus of the university of oklahoma and they are the first ones to spot this kind of tornadic activity. people work together. that's what you notice as soon as you arrive there. it's kind of like the scenario when we have earthquakes here or fires here, but it's more pronounced because, boy, that tornado season is underway. look at what's going on right now throughout louisiana. and drifting out towards georgia will be lifting into the carolinas. today. we're keeping a watchful eye. and as dave was alluding to, it's quiet here on the west coast. when you see that green on the screen right there, that is ground clutter from our radar because it is up, it's circulating. it's in search of any kind of condensation associated with this gray slate over the bay area. visibility is under ten miles in santa rosa and half moon bay. otherwise it will be improving. we did see

avenue in the tuxedo neighborhood, one block south of 580 on sunday. joyce wong lives down the street. heard all the commotion at first not realizing what was going on. >> first off, we think about fireworks. >> she would end up counting more than ten shots fired. >> very big noise, wong, who's lived in this community for 40 years, ran outside concerned about her neighbors. i see two people was running away. >> first, this man in suit after this woman took off running as wong snapped photos of them. >> we don't want all the criminal coming here at the crime scene. >> a blue suv riddled with bullet holes appears to have collided with a white suv at the entrance to a dead end alley. this garage door also has bullet holes in it. >> it's no good. >> police would respond within ten minutes. here's what wong wants oakland's next police chief to know. >> police have more often run our streets. i want to be safe here. >> and that was reporter joey

horta and the man whose house was hit by that bullet didn't want to speak on camera. he's shaken up, but his family is safe. we don't know if anyone was actually hit by the bullet or if police have a suspect yet. we tried to contact oakland police to find out. we're still waiting to hear back. >> today, jury selection is set to begin in the corruption trial of new jersey senator bob menendez. prosecutors accused menendez and his wife, nadine, of accepting hundreds of thousands of dollars in bribes in exchange for political favors. menendez is accused of using his power as chairman of the senate foreign relations committee to influence the governments of egypt and qatar. both he and his wife have pleaded not guilty. >> the prosecution is going to prove at trial that menendez had hundreds of thousands of dollars in cash and gold bars in his closet, and they're also going to present evidence of a cooperator who is going to testify that he met with menendez and his wife, nadine,

and provided them money in exchange for influence. >> this is the democrats second corruption trial. this trial is expected to last weeks. >> our time is 434. well, today, the former lawyer for donald trump, michael cohen, expected to take the witness stand in donald trump's criminal trial. the prosecutors say cohen will detail the alleged scheme by the former president to pay off adult movie star stormy daniels and reimburse michael cohen for paying her, as was all they say aimed at cover up stormy daniels story of an affair with donald trump and make sure it would not damage his 2016 presidential campaign. the defense will likely question michael cohen's credibility, calling him in their statements, and admitted liar. >> the prosecutors have put all their chips on michael cohen being a persuasive, credible witness which, to say the least, is an enormous risk for the da's team. >> now, prosecutors say they may

rest their case by the end of this week. >> speculation continues over who donald trump will choose as a vice presidential running mate. over the weekend, trump held a campaign rally in new jersey, where he was joined by north dakota governor doug burgum. burgum spoke before trump took the stage, raising speculation that he could be on trump's short list for vice president. >> he made his money in technology, but he probably knows more about energy than anybody i know. so get ready for something, okay? just get ready. >> i am filled with the gratitude for the outpouring of support. >> now over the weekend on truth social, trump said nikki haley is not among the options he's considering for a running mate. >> our time is now. 436 will the man convicted of attacking congresswoman nancy pelosi's husband with a hammer is due to be sentenced friday, federal prosecutors want the judge to sentence david depape to 40 years in prison. now. last november, depape was found guilty of breaking into the san francisco home of nancy pelosi

and her husband and attacking her husband, paul, court records show. federal prosecutors believe depape deserves the maximum punishment for that attack. in october of 2022. they say depape has shown no remorse for the crime and even appears to be proud of what he did. >> it's a big rivalry. the giants host the los angeles dodgers tonight in the first of a three game series. just a month and a half into the season, the giants are already eight games behind the dodgers. it was a thrilling day, as roberta mentioned at the ballpark on mother's day yesterday, the giants beat the cincinnati reds 6 to 5 on a walk off, hit 36,000 fans watched as first baseman lamonte wade jr tied the score with a two run homer in the fifth inning. pretty exciting. their shortstop , casey schmidt, won the game with a 10th inning walk off double. the a's are in houston today to take on the astros. the a's lost to the seattle mariners

work moving forward at oakland airport's main runway. officials say the crews out there are repairing two patches about 2800ft wide and 1100 feet long on either side of the runway centerline. the work started last sunday. it it started again last night and it will continue until 4 p.m. today. planes will be using the north field while the repair work is underway. >> investigators in nevada say food vendors from california are playing a significant role in a growing public health problem. they say the vendors are crossing state lines to run illegal kitchens in las vegas, the nevada health department says a recent house fire in northern las vegas exposed the problem. investigators traced the flames to an electrical problem in an illegal commercial kitchen inside a home. and they say the food is not safe to eat. >> these are photos you can smell and it's got a line of commercial kitchen equipment. this is in a private house.

police in lubbock, texas. chief mitchell was mayor xiang tao's final decision for the job. that's after about a year long search to replace former police chief lauren armstrong. you'll remember mayor tao fired armstrong back in february 2023. that's after reports said the former chief did not properly handle cases of misconduct within the police department. the mayor has since said his attitude during those conversations about that misconduct made her less confident that he could do the job. armstrong has since filed a lawsuit against the city. we did speak to mayor tao last week, who says while today is the chief's first official day in office, he's been preparing for weeks. >> he's been working closely with chief ellison, interim chief ellison and assistant chief tony jones. really learning the ropes of all of the different things that we're doing here, the different strategies, one of those strategies, learning the ins and outs of operation ceasefire, that's the city's crime prevention tool, which mayor tao says is working. >> the city reporting crimes in

in san francisco's russian hill. the fire prompted evacuations. at 6:00 yesterday morning, one person experienced minor injuries but did not need to go to the hospital. the fire was out quickly, but firefighters

stayed on scene for several hours to make sure there were no hot spots. surrounding streets were back open at about 8 a.m. the cause of that fire is still under investigation. a lithium battery plant fire sent a large plume of smoke over oakland yesterday afternoon. that fire at the port of oakland was quickly contained. no injuries have been reported. still no word on what caused that fire. >> our time now. 514, in west oakland, the community there reacting to a weekend fire that badly damaged a church. it happened friday night at saint andrew's missionary baptist church, 27th and west street. more than 60 firefighters battled those flames for several hours. investigators say the fire spread from a vacant home nearby. many church members hope that historic church can be rebuilt. >> it's sad. there's a lot of history here. like i said, i spent the first 15 years of my life here at this church and, i'm glad to see you survived. although it was a lot of damage. >> firefighters say no one was

hurt, and investigators are still searching for the cause of the fire. >> an east bay family is grieving this morning after their five year-old child drowned near bethel island. a diver found the boy in the water inside a cove. they believe he was in the water for about 15 minutes. rescuers performed cpr and rushed him to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead. authorities say the child got to the water through a backyard next to the shoreline. >> i haven't really noticed whether there could be better security measures. to tell you the truth, i think it's, you know, most of the most of the most of it is really up to the homeowners to sort of make sure their particular areas are secure. >> the boy was reportedly visiting his grandparents on the island at the time. >> well, as we head into the hot summer season, families should make sure they know about water safety. it only takes a moment for a mistake to happen, and about 1000 children every year die from drowning. and to keep your children safe, put them in

evasion charges. so all of this means it could be a make or break day for this trial. pam, back to you. thank you. >> amanda, grand jury transcripts are providing some new details in the case of a los gatos woman charged with hosting alcohol fueled sex parties for teenagers, 49 year old shannon o'connor remains in jail awaiting trial on more than 20 felony counts. more than 2000 pages of transcripts were released friday. they include the testimony of more than a dozen teenagers who attended her parties. they claim she invited them to her home as part of her effort to make her teenage son more popular. the teenagers say they were encouraged to drink alcohol and engage in sexual activity. they also said she often tried to hide these parties from her husband and her neighbors. in los gatos, protesters gathered in palo alto on mother's day to bring more attention to the moms and their babies suffering in gaza. at the corner of el camino real and embarcadero, people gathered at the weekly vigil for gaza with a

outreach services, we have an update for people driving near the interstate 80 gilman interchange in berkeley today. >> caltrans says second street will no longer be open to southbound travel this morning. it is returning to being a one way northbound road over the weekend, construction on a new footbridge over interstate 80 reached a milestone. that bridge officially opened to pedestrians and cyclists. caltrans says it is also building a double roundabout in the area, scheduled to be finished by the end of the year, and caltrans also reopened eastbound highway 37 between sonoma and solano counties ten hours earlier than expected. last night, the highway reopened at about 7:00 last night after caltrans finished its paving project along a seven mile stretch of the highway. the last scheduled eastbound full highway closure between highway 121 and highway 29 is scheduled for next weekend, beginning friday at 10 p.m. and ending monday at 5 a.m.

bethel island when he went missing. the contra costa county sheriff's office believe he was by himself near the shoreline and accidentally fell into the water. a rescue diver ultimately found the boy submerged in the cove. he was believed to be in the water for about 15 minutes. rescuers performed cpr and rushed him to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead. >> i haven't really noticed whether there could be better security measures, to tell you the truth, i think it's, you know, most of the most of the most of it is really up to the homeowners to sort of make sure their particular areas are secure. >> investigators are still looking into the circumstances of the young child's death. this tragic accident can serve as a reminder to families of the importance of water safety, especially as it gets hotter outside. >> even if you have a life jacket on a child, absolutely arms reach at all times, and then the other thing get them in swim lessons, get them, get them comfortable in the water. make it enjoyable, do swim team build your skills, those kind of things. but parental supervision

the new police chief's main job will be reducing crime. good morning. james. >> dave. pam. good morning. that police chief. now floyd mitchell , a member of law enforcement for more than 30 years and someone who just recently served as chief of police in lubbock, texas. he's now coming to oakland, starting his first official week as of today, chief mitchell was mayor xiang tao's final decision for the job. he started over the weekend, but today will be his first day in office, and that's after about a year long search to replace former chief lauren armstrong. mayor tao fired armstrong back in february 2023, after reports said the former chief did not properly handle cases of misconduct within the police department. the mayor has since said his attitude during conversations about that misconduct made her less confident that he could do the job. armstrong has since filed a lawsuit against the city. this new chief coming in at a time when crime and public safety has been a wide concern for the city of oakland, the mayor's office reports. however assaults,

homicides and burglaries those are all trending down while robberies are still on the rise. we spoke to one restaurant owner late last week telling the story of how thieves broke into his shop twice in the early morning. >> we're all struggling here in oakland. unfortunately you know, decrease in foot traffic, public safety has been better. so i give the city a lot of props on that. they've been getting better at that, at least in this area. but you know, people just need to feel safer coming out, you know, and that's going to that's going to need time. >> that's what we've heard from mayor shang tao in the recent weeks that while crime is trending down, there's still this fight to change the public opinion about oakland. over the weekend, chief mitchell attended the graduation ceremony of the latest police academy. 12 more officers are now added to the police force and according to the city, that brings the tally up to 716 total sworn officers in oakland, which is right around the number that the city of oakland's budget is able to pay for now. when chief mitchell

emeryville and in san francisco. back and you're right where you should be for this time of the year. but still well above normal in santa rosa and in los gatos and the santa clara valley. it's all because of that, right there. that's what's cooling us down. that's a beautiful, thick layer of low clouds and patchy fog that is pushed onshore into the santa clara valley. we're currently it's 56 degrees in san jose. it's dipped to 50 in livermore with the gray slate, low 50s and napa. and these temperatures are up to four degrees cooler than what we were 24 hours ago. we still have some pretty blustery winds out towards fairfield and travis. otherwise the winds are up to about ten at oakland and right now, half moon bay. with the calm wind. these winds will be increasing. today they will be sustained winds onshore. so that's out of the west 10 to 15. an occasional gust to 20. and you know the drill by now that wind ushers upon around. we have the oak and the mulberry tree

to unionize have now voted to authorize a strike. apple store workers in townsend, maryland, cast the vote late saturday night. no date has been set for the strike. the union says the vote comes after more than a year of negotiations with the company. they want changes to what they are calling unpredictable scheduling practices, and they want a cost of living adjustment on their pay. a new study from uc berkeley confirms rents in san francisco are unaffordable for most people. the study reveals only 35% of california

can see that traffic is going to back up to the maze. metering lights are on san mateo bridge traffic is moderate. 650 let's bring roberta back to talk about the cloudy start we have. >> it's just beautiful when you take a bird's eye view from monument peak looking out towards the santa clara valley, sal, look at that. it just looks like a blanket, doesn't it? that is the marine layer which has surged on shore a good 50 miles today. to the north, it's 50 degrees in santa rosa to the east it's 50 and livermore, otherwise 52 degrees apiece. sfo fremont as well, and concord and novato. winds are gusting up to 25 in fairfield. otherwise, these winds have not been problematic this morning. we'll be sustained onshore push out of the west about up to 15mph during the day today, occasional gusts up to 20. this is an area of low pressure. it is a trough. it is minuscule at this hour, but it has enough power to cause a huge dent in that ridge of

high pressure. so temperatures pretty status quo, nor inland areas, but coming down a couple of notches along the seashore with that thickening marine layer. so today we're banking on 82 degrees in concord. and that is similar to yesterday day, but slightly warmer for tuesday and wednesday. it's a really benign weather pattern all the way through the end of the week. so here we go with that impressive marine layer this morning. the bank is roughly about 1000ft deep. not obscuring visibility at this hour, except down to about seven mile visibility in throughout los gatos and saratoga. so there you have the influx of that marine layer. by this afternoon it has retreated. but notice no clearing along the media at sea shore and colma as well. and in la honda and pescadero. then it's wash, rinse and repeat as those clouds push back onshore in the overnight hours. and that's how we'll begin tomorrow morning. meanwhile, across the state today, 57 degrees in monterey bay, we're talking about nearly 70 and los angeles, which is seasonal. our temperatures close
