two, a pro-palestinian encampment pops up on another bay area campus tonight. more than a dozen tents emerge at san jose state university, with students and teachers now joining in on a national movement. >> they believe in academic freedom, and i believe in my right to free speech. >> tonight, the university has already warned the protesters they are in violation of campus policies. good evening everyone. >> i'm mike mibach and i'm julie julie haener. just today, pro-palestinian protesters started camping out at san jose state demanding total divestment from israel. new at ten tonight ktvu lamonica peters joins us now live from san jose state. and lamonica, those demonstrators are being asked to leave. >> that's right julie, the protesters are still here, although they were asked to leave by a school official about an hour ago. i'm going to step back so you can see what is happening here on campus right

now. they formed a circle near the mlk library. i believe they are in prayers right now. everything has been peaceful, but they say san jose state is not addressing what's happening in gaza. ball and staff at san jose state university monday, pro-palestinian protesters set up an encampment with a list of demands for the university. protesters would not speak with ktvu on camera, but justice studies professor sang kill, who says she's a faculty advisor for the protesters, talked about students decision to stage a sit in the administration, though they send lots of emails about their concerns over wars or natural disasters like earthquakes and hurricanes. >> have yet to send one email out about the genocide that is happening against the palestinians. and we're in our seventh month now. >> protesters say they want the university to be more transparent about its financial investments and to fully divest san jose state university

released a statement saying in part, while an initial review of investments by the tower foundation board indicates no direct holdings of companies identified in the april 29th associated student resolution, we are conducting further research to confirm, and we are committed to communicating an update when this research concludes. the river to the sea. >> from the river to the sea, palestine will be free. >> there were also calling for professor jonathan roth to be fired after he was involved in an altercation with a pro-palestinian protester at a campus event earlier this year. >> so my understanding was that he was put on paid leave, for me, which is a paid vacation and that an investigation was opened up into his behavior. >> the operations are going to be going off tonight. so now again, just before 9:00 tonight, a school official came out here and told the protesters that they were in violation of the

school's time, place and manner policy, meaning that they can't be here overnight. >> and he also said that they would be turning on the sprinklers, shortly. and we did see some people putting plastic buckets over the sprinkler. so i'm not really sure what's going to happen there. but the school did send us a statement saying that they respect, freedom of speech, and they would like to just keep everyone here on campus safe. so again, protesters are still here on campus right now. it doesn't appear that they are leaving any time soon. julie. all right. >> well, we will continue to watch what happens. lamonica, thank you for that report. the university of san francisco has issued a warning to pro-palestinian protesters who are also camping out on campus. in a letter tonight, university officials said students have until 3 p.m. tomorrow afternoon to vacate welch field or they will face disciplinary action. the university says it met with members of the encampment today. now, the university says it is calling for a ceasefire in gaza.

it will also investigate future academic opportunities and relationships with israel, as well as give encampment organizers one dedicated seat on the soon to be formed, socially responsible investment task force, the university says it respects the right to free speech, but public safety is its priority. >> members of the islamic community are denouncing a long tirade against two people who were hanging banners on a peninsula overpass. they say they were hanging pro-palestine banners on a pedestrian overpass above 101 near pierce road in menlo park on may 5th. that's when an unidentified man walked right up and demanded they remove the banners. the pair agreed to remove those signs and leave, but they say the person became increasingly agitated. >> feared for my life in a way because he was saying it like so loud, and he was like kind of shouting it like. i just felt like, okay, what if he attacks us? if we don't take this down? >> the man also allegedly threw their personal items over the fence and onto the shoulder of

101 before taking off. redwood city chp says it is investigating the incident. >> organizers say they are planning a mass protest outside google's i o conference in mountain view tomorrow. this comes just weeks after the tech giant fired dozens of workers who held sit in protests at google offices in sunnyvale, seattle and in new york. organizers say hundreds of people are expected to try to shut down the conference at shoreline amphitheater. protesters say google's project nimbus contract could aid the israeli military's offensive in gaza. >> free, free, free palestine pro-palestinian protesters pushing back against a north bay lawmaker tonight, coming up at 1030, the strong message demonstrated are hoping to send as the war in gaza rages on. >> a star witness took the stand in the so-called hush money trial of former president donald trump. michael cohen, trump's former attorney, testified that the former president was heavily involved with all aspects of trying to bury a big story ahead of the 2016 presidential

election. ktvu jana katsuyama reports. >> michael cohen, the former attorney for donald trump, now a star witness against him, took the stand in new york monday. cohen testified that donald trump was involved in the plan to suppress stories of alleged sexual affairs in order to avoid harm to his 2016 presidential candidacy. cohen testified, quote, what i was doing was at the direction of and benefit of mr. trump and later said, quote, everything required mr. trump's sign off. cohen said that in the months before the 2016 presidential election, trump directed him to handle secret hush money payments to former playmate karen mcdougal and star stormy daniels, who both alleged they had sexual affairs with trump. cohen testified about a secret recording where he said trump asked about paying david pecker, the national enquirer publisher, in cash, to buy and suppress mcdougal's story. >> so i'm i'm all over that. and

i spoke to alan about it. when it comes time for the financing, which will be what financing we'll have to pay you. so no no no no no no no, i got. >> cohen said trump knew about the plans to conceal the payments by using fabricated bank accounts and reimbursements. prosecutors presented documents including a first republic bank account, which cohen testified was used for the $130,000 payout to stormy daniels. trump denies the affairs and any knowledge of the payout cover ups, saying before court that he only knew of legal expenses for cohen. >> it's marked down in the book, quote, legal expense is perfectly marked down. >> the defense raised few objections during the testimony and is expected to cast doubt on cohen's credibility later this week. cohen served prison time for lying to congress and for federal charges involving the hush money cover ups. but his testimony monday follows a careful setup by prosecutors, according to uc law professor david levine. >> in this case, you've got

their loved one. a 25 year old man who has been missing now for several weeks. ktvu is alice wertz joins us live tonight from the san leandro police department, where the man's family did report him missing. alice >> that's right. mike. daniel chow is a young 25 year old man. his family says he has a diagnosis of schizophrenia. they're using social media to get the word out. family and friends are even doing searches. they want daniel dennis chu home. daniel chow and his cousin kyle ma are worried about daniel's brother, who's been missing since april 23rd. 25 year-old dennis chow suffers from schizophrenia. he first went missing april 13th, but his family found him. >> we found him at dublin bart station and when we found him, his feet were heavily blistered, so he went back to kyle's house. he took a shower, ate a lot of food and got rested. and the day after we drove him to the e.r. here in hayward, where he was able to get seen for all of those blisters he had on his feet. but to also go get a

psychiatric evaluation from the doctor, where he then got transported to john george to begin receiving care under a 5150 that was eventually extended to a 5250. >> during his two week hold, he was transported from john george psychiatric hospital to san leandro hospital. it's now under alameda health system. he was taken there for an ultrasound. >> my mom and i went to san leandro hospital to talk to security, and all that they said was, you know, he ran off. we tried to run after him a bit, but we couldn't catch him. and that's all they told me. >> chow is a graduate of tennyson high school in hayward. he went on to brown university. >> yes. he's a graduate of brown university. he is a gates millennium scholar, so he has a full ride scholarship to college and to any other education that he would want to pursue. >> according to ma, every time they've received a tip about a sighting, they just miss him and they told us on april 28th he was, can like he was at

westfield valley fair mall. >> he was trying to shoplift and they weren't going to press any charges. so they just let him go and they removed the missing persons report without even telling us. >> the family's frustrated with the fragmented system, including the hospital that didn't keep him secured and public safety agencies, whenever the police do encounter him, they never called us even just to let him know that let us know that dennis is okay and that he's seen the family has been doing their own searching. dennis chow was last seen in king city in monterey county. it's likely the family will head there to look for him. >> i think that we just need law enforcement to be more aware of these situations like this. i mean, i'm just driving around san leandro in the bay area. there's so many homeless people with mental health issues, and i think that the system could do a lot better than this. >> yes, we did reach out to alameda health systems, of course, because of privacy laws. they couldn't tell us anything. as for the mother of mister chow

, she's on her way to sfo tonight to pick up their father, who's coming from vietnam. he wants to help find his son. one other note. it's likely that mr. chow looks a little bit darker than the pictures on his missing poster. that's likely due to the elements he's endured in the warm weather. we've had. back to you, mike. >> know, hopefully more tips can come in and he can be safely found. alice, thank you for that. alameda county sheriff deputies are hoping someone has seen a missing at risk woman. lori allinson left her care facility on sole street in san leandro sometime between 730 last night and 630 this morning. she suffers from dementia and may not be able to find her way back. deputies say she is not familiar with the area and has no money or cell phone. she's five feet eight inches tall, 210 pounds. she may be possibly wearing cheetah print pajamas. anyone who sees her is asked to contact the sheriff's office. >> coming up, a legal victory for the oakland a's a little later tonight. today's decision in a nevada courtroom that is paving the way for the team to

endangered missing advisory for an eight year old boy from mountain view. authorities say adan ortiz was last seen around 6:00 tonight in mountain view. they believe he is on foot and wearing a gray sweatshirt and blue pajama pants. if you see him or have any information on his whereabouts, you're asked to call 911. >> new at ten tonight, authorities are searching for an inmate who walked away from a conservation camp in solano county. the department of corrections says james shang, a minimum security prisoner, was last seen at 7:00 this morning during breakfast. he is described as five nine, 150 pounds with brown eyes, black hair and was last seen wearing a gray sweatshirt and pants. >> emotions were running high

today in an east bay courtroom. that's where a man was found guilty in the murder of his girlfriend. she was a law student who was just two months shy of earning her degree. >> ktvu is henry lee spoke to the victim's family, who say despite repeated calls for help, police failed to take action before the killing. >> and today means that i can breathe a little bit easier. but i know it's not over. >> as jamila buckner is filled with a mix of emotion. on monday in alameda county, jury convicted joseph roberts of second degree murder for killing her daughter rachel elizabeth imani buckner. authorities say roberts killed his 27 year old girlfriend in their pleasanton apartment. her remains washed up on the alameda shoreline near the bay farm island bridge on july 20th. she was wrapped in tape and her head, hands and feet were missing when today's verdict means for me is that i don't have to look over my shoulder for right now. >> i've lived in trauma, in terror. authorities say roberts

never reported buckner missing and instead began talking with three other women. >> buckner was two months shy from earning her degree from golden gate university law school. >> there was sufficient evidence to prove beyond a reasonable doubt, based on the dna evidence and other circumstantial evidence. >> da pamela price, who has made it a priority not to let cases languish, noted that this murder trial moved very quickly through the criminal justice system. >> we appreciate that the case was speedily disposed of relative to the way the normal course of cases in our system, and we believe that justice has been served. >> family and friends say pleasanton police missed warning signs about roberts during earlier visits. >> they should have arrested him on the spot regardless of what she said. we watched body cam footage of them chatting it up as he was beating her down 17 times. >> the police came out and did

barely anything. this is an injustice that should never have happened. >> roberts will be sentenced on june 14th to 15 years to life in prison. in oakland, henry lee ktvu, fox two news oakland's newest police chief is officially on the job. >> chief floyd mitchell brings with him more than 30 years of law enforcement experience and was most recently the chief of police in lubbock, texas, for weeks, he has been meeting with opd leaders to learn about the department and its programs. we spoke with city and community leaders about the new chief. they tell us they are optimistic, but also say there's a lot of work that needs to be done. >> we're looking forward to meeting with him and with many of the merchants and a lot of that. a lot of the small businesses and folks that live and work in fruitvale to, you know, to support him. and hopefully he'll be able to be creative and energetic to because we need that right now. >> public safety is the number one priority is not about talking and feeling sorry for

people is about taking action. >> chief mitchell succeeds leronne armstrong, who was fired more than a year ago and for more insight, earlier tonight at 730, we did speak with tommy tucson, a former police chief and current criminal justice professor at bakersfield college . >> i hope that the city government, city leadership, the politicians allow the chief to run the police department and allow the chief to make those decisions. he is a student of to understand that those are his bosses, but they hired him for a reason, and they ought to let him run the police department. he's got a lot of work ahead of him by assessing the department, assessing the senior leadership and assessing the rank and file. >> and he would go on to say when it comes to crimes, he suggests chief mitchell reach out to other bay area police chiefs to really get an idea about the crime rate in the region. >> organizers of art and soul

oakland say they are canceling the festival this september. supporters say the decision comes after a months long delay in funding support from the city that had been approved by the city council. they say they will use the rest of this year to regroup and hope to secure new funding. the festival, featuring music, art and food, returned to frank ogawa plaza for the last two years after a hiatus due to covid. >> all right. checking in on the weather. we've got temperatures that are a little cooler or were a little cooler than they were yesterday. temperatures tomorrow will be a little bit warmer, and that's kind of how the week goes. a little up, a little down. and that hovers right into the weekend with temperatures near mid 80s and then back down into low 80s. and a little bit of everything. fog stays at the coast. it's a deep marine layer up over 1000ft, and it's going to do that deal where it gets deeper or thicker night mornings. and as it does, that, it'll cool the valley a little more and then it'll burn off a little later and temperatures will cool. and then the next day it might not go as far inland. it'll burn off sooner, it'll be a little warmer. and this is the

las vegas. today, the nevada supreme court rejected a proposed ballot measure that would have allowed voters to overturn a public financing deal for a new ballpark along the strip, lawmakers have approved $380 million for that project, but the group schools over stadiums has been gathering signatures for a referendum that would allow voters to weigh in. >> i think the public is tired of their politicians spending time on these kind of endeavors. while essential things like schools, housing go either unfixed or unnoticed, all we are trying to do was ask nevadans, do you want to pay for a billionaires stadium with public money? and that's it. >> in today's ruling, the nevada supreme court upheld a lower court decision that found the language of the proposed ballot measure was legally deficient and confusing. schools over stadium says it will try again to place a measure on the ballot. >> well, there was a good amount of dodger blue at the ballpark in san francisco tonight. the giants hosting the dodgers for

right outside a campaign event for congressman jared huffman in the city of petaluma, ktvu joey hoarder live there tonight with more on the story. joey. >> well, mike, about 75 of those protesters were here for about 2.5 hours chanting their demands as the congressman was inside for a private fundraising event for his campaign here at this petaluma brewery. free palestine. free. >> free palestine. >> dozens of pro-palestine protesters carrying flags and banners outside of anita's brewing in petaluma on monday night. inside democratic congressman jared huffman holding a private campaign fundraiser. no peace on stolen land. protesters are calling out huffman, who is running for

statement about what was happening out here. mike. there you go. >> joey horta, live tonight in petaluma. joey. thank you. state department officials are now commenting on a recent report that found israel likely violated international humanitarian law in its use of u.s. provided weapons during the war in gaza. u.s. officials say it is reasonable to assess that the weapons have been used in ways inconsistent with israel's obligations, but that wartime conditions prevented the u.s. from making that determination for certain specific airstrikes. >> there is a moral and strategic imperative to take every possible step to minimize civilian casualties, steps that we know that the idf has, the tools and the capability to undertake. >> meantime, israeli forces continue to move deeper into the southern gaza city of rafah. aid workers say they are struggling right now to distribute dwindling food and other supplies to displaced palestinians in the region to stay on top of the war in gaza

and the latest developments from u.s. officials, you can just download the ktvu fox local app. it is free for your smart tv. >> new at ten tonight, a video sharing site is suing google, claiming it has a monopoly on digital advertising. reuters reports. rumble claims that google represents both ad buyers and sellers, and runs the ad exchange that connects them. rumble, which has become popular among conservatives, is a rival of google's youtube. the suit claims that google also has a deal with facebook to favor google's ad platforms. google did not comment on the suit. top executives at some of the biggest tech companies chose to leave rather than return to the office after covid. a study by the university of chicago and university of michigan looked at data from apple, spacex and microsoft. at least 4% of senior level employees each are left each of these companies, when asked to return to the office following the pandemic, more tech layoffs announced just tonight for bay area workers. >> job search giant indeed says

it is cutting 1000 jobs. that is about 8% of the entire company. in a letter, the ceo says this will impact several different departments, but many of the cuts will be at the foster city office. the ceo says these layoffs are sparked by cost savings and the need to simplify the company. a mixed close for stocks on wall street today. the dow did drop more than 81 points, the nasdaq gaining 47 and the s&p 500 ended the day slightly down. stocks have broadly rallied really this month following that difficult april, but investors are anxiously awaiting for some key inflation data set to be released later this week. >> gas prices, already a burden for many california drivers and they're only going to get worse as we look ahead now to the summer months. ktvu tom vacar has a closer look at the soaring prices. >> it's a tale of two gas stations two blocks apart. the cash price at the 76 station in orinda is 5.39 a gallon, but at

the mash, gas and food, it's 489 a half buck cheaper for the folks we met that makes mash where they spend their cash. >> it's at least $0.50 cheaper here. >> over the years we've covered this station. it has always had a good audience and simply because they try to pass the savings on to consumers, not themselves. >> there are several, low income senior buildings and it really helps us out in a rent. even though we live in orinda, we're low income seniors. >> i'm selective where i get my gas from, for one thing. like, i come to this gas station going back and forth through fiddletown and san francisco. >> one man says it's all about too much government. one example, a coming carbon tax that might add as much as $0.50 a gallon, possibly next year, to fight climate change. >> people that are running the state right now, and the regulations associated with the gas prices, and i just i don't like it. >> the nationwide average price

for a gallon of regular gas is $3.62. $0.08 more than a year ago, california's average price 529 $0.49. more than a year ago, the average bay area price is 545 $0.59 more than a year ago, using the current bay area price, a round trip drive to south lake tahoe from oakland is 364 miles. an average californians car now gets 31 miles a gallon, the best in the nation, but that round trip tahoe adventure is going to cost you $64 in regular gas. and that's at least seven bucks more than a year ago. and 800 mile round trip to disneyland will cost $140 for regular gas. that's at least $15 more than a year ago. but is that enough to seriously affect summer travel? >> i think a lot of us will travel no matter what. we just start to weigh the price of flying versus driving. i mean,

degree, and was granted parole. he worked as an advocate for the asian prisoner support committee , a nonprofit organization helping members of the aapi community reenter society. but his immigration status was at stake. facing deportation because of his felony in 2020, governor gavin newsom granted him a pardon after hearing about his advocacy work, and that freed him to pursue higher education at cal berkeley through a program called underground scholars. >> and one thing that i noticed about danny is that he's using his life experience to inform his research and the work that he wants to pursue. the program began as a club by a formerly incarcerated student in 2013, danny murillo, who wanted to help others like himself. >> now it's expanded to every uc and community colleges as a prison to university pipeline run every year. >> now we get $4 million from the state budget that gets divided by the nine undergraduate uc campuses to serve formerly incarcerated students and system impacted students in the university.
