in this case. also, it's the race that's been described as a mullet business in the front and a party in the back. the bay to breakers is this weekend in the city. what to expect if you're running it or just want to avoid it altogether? >> this is ktvu, fox two news at noon. >> good afternoon. i'm gasia mikaelian monterey senior. >> thank you for joining us. we begin with breaking news in san francisco right now. punishment handed down for the man accused of attacking congresswoman nancy pelosi's husband with a hammer. he is being sent to prison for 30 years. ktvu christien kafton is live outside the courtroom. and christian, how did david depape react to the sentence? >> yeah, we did not see much of a reaction out of depape in the courtroom when the judge handed down that 30 year sentence to papp's attorneys had been asking her for 14 years. prosecutors were asking for 40 years. in november of last year, david depape was convicted of attempting to kidnap former speaker of the house nancy pelosi and assaulting her husband, paul pelosi, with a hammer. now, david depape was sentenced to 20 years and 30
12:02 pm
years for those convictions. those sentences, though, will run concurrently, meaning at the same time, so it amounts to 30 years. the judge saying that she was going to knock 18 months off for time, that he's already served. the judge saying she was concerned that depape didn't express remorse for wanting to kidnap the former speaker, and also said she had to weigh the impact of his actions and the impact of those actions will have on possibly discouraging potential future politicians from entering public service because they're worried about the safety of their families. the u.s. attorney released a statement read by a court spokesperson outside of court today. today's sentence reflects david depapes lack of remorse and contrition for violently assaulting mr. pelosi. >> the courts sentence will ensure that the public will not be able to use violence to pollute the political process. >> at depapes family was also at court today, his son, speaking out after that sentence was
12:03 pm
handed down outside the courtroom, the family saying that given to pap's current age, the sentence they say amounts to a death sentence. depape still faces a trial in san francisco superiorourthat trial set to get underway next week. if he is convicted in state court, his state sentence would run concurrently again. that means at the same time as any as his federal sentence. so depending on what happens in the future with the case that is set to get underway in state court next week, whatever time he receives there, if he is in fact convicted in that court, will run again concurrently at the same time as the federal time. the bottom line though depape is set to serve at least 30 years, less those 18 months in prison for the assault on paul pelosi and the attempted kidnaping of former speaker nancy pelosi. we're live in san francisco, christien kafton, ktvu, fox two news. >> we know she stepped down from the speakership shortly after the attack happened. christine,
