year old brittany ligt's home in pinole, back in february. she was studying to be a nurse at the time of her killing. hello again. i'm cristina rendon and i'm greg lee ligdus left behind two children. >> ktvu joey jordan was at diablo valley college tonight as those children and their grandmother accepted ligdus diploma. >> as the diablo valley college class of 2024 files into viking stadium. donning caps and gowns, there is one heartbreaking absence. >> i know she's here with us, and i know she's proud of us, cassandra santiago is referring to her close friend and fellow nursing student, brittany ligdus pinole. >> police say the 30 year old was shot and killed in her home this february. also home at the time, her four year old boy, liam. >> he was her whole world. >> no police say jeffrey kendall, britney's ex and the father of liam, took her life. investigators say surveillance video shows him fleeing from the crime scene. chp would later

behind bars and due in court for a hearing in his case next month in pleasant hill. joey jordan, ktvu, fox two news piedmont police are investigating an arson case. >> they say they got a call around 1 a.m. the morning this morning of a nissan versa on fire in the area of crocker avenue and mendana boulevard. investigators say they were able to confirm this was arson. after reviewing surveillance video, anyone with information is asked to contact piedmont police. california highway patrol released some data today revealing a growing increase in cadet applications. the chp says they've seen 104% increase in applicants since 2022. that's double the volume over two years. this year alone, highway patrol has seen 7600 applicants since january. to accommodate this interest, chp is holding simultaneous academy classes for the first time in department history over 300 cadets have been sworn in as officers this year, with three more classes completing training this year as well. >> an inmate was found dead at a

facility in the south bay. the santa clara county sheriff's office says a 41 year old man incarcerated at the elmwood correctional facility in milpitas died on thursday, deputies say they found the man in his barracks around ten in the morning. emergency responders declared him dead less than an hour later. investigators say there were no signs of foul play. the county medical examiner's office is now working to determine the inmate's official cause of death. >> a young father with three children and one on the way, killed by a suspected drunk driver. his family is heartbroken, but proud of the man he was. ktvu is amber lee is live in oakland. after speaking with the man's brother about his family's devastating loss, amber . >> greg, the brother tells me the man was well loved and admired, and he says family members are now focused on helping his wife and children. no, no no no. see only hafoka lifts up his niece with a heavy heart. the child's father is her

focus. younger brother daniella, known as finau hafoka, the 26 year old and oakland resident was killed by a suspected drunk driver. >> he always had a smile on his face, you know, always high on life, always worked at tesla in fremont as a forklift driver. >> the family created a memorial at the site where he was killed on the night of may 3rd, around 1130, finau was outside the auto plant taking a break near this bus stop on busy fremont boulevard. hafoka tells me a speeding driver going the wrong way struck his brother. finau died at the scene. >> now this is not open. we're about putting my brother to rest and taking care of his kids. >> finau left behind his wife emily and three children, ages three, two and 11 months old. the couple was expecting a fourth child due in a few months. hafoka tells me he plans to help raise his brother's children along with his own child. he hafoka describes his

brother as a loving, devoted husband and father whose priority was his family. >> he was just more than a provider. he was there. he was there. funny man. >> look at your big head. >> seeing him, how he treats his kids, how he treats his wife. he. he makes me a better a dad and a husband. >> hafoka tells me his brother was an old soul and a man of faith. he says the family is focused on honoring fino's memory and not on the way he died. hafoka says he hasn't given thought to the driver who killed his brother. my buddy forgets a lot, too, so he probably would have forgave them too if he, you know. >> but at the end of the day, it's sometimes how it goes. >> the family plans to hold a memorial service for finau on may 24th. they're raising money to help his wife and children and fly his body back to utah, his home state. for more information on the family fundraiser, go to ktvu.com and click on the web link section.

>> greg, hopefully the community steps up to support this family. amberleigh live in oakland. amber. thank you. oakland police are looking for more information in an unsolved homicide, george afakasi was standing outside with friends on crosby avenue near foothill boulevard when he was shot and killed last november 26th. witnesses reported multiple suspects leaving the area in a dark colored sedan. he survived by his fiancee and daughter. anyone with information is asked to contact opd's homicide unit. >> new at 11 nurses in san francisco overwhelmingly vote to go on strike. the nurses who work at san francisco's public hospitals and community clinics tallied the votes today, and 99.5% of the union members voted to authorize a strike. the nurses say the sf department of public health has not taken what they call meaningful action in contract negotiations, including addressing staffing shortages. san francisco's public health department says 166 new nurses have been hired since december.

shot up in flames following a police standoff with an armed suspect this afternoon. this story begins tonight's west coast wrap. >> police say a woman fled a home and called police, saying her six month old baby was

inside and in danger when police showed up, they heard gunfire. they went in and rescued the baby. they say the baby had been shot multiple times. the baby was rushed to the hospital for surgery. swat teams and spent hours trying to negotiate with the child's father before the fire broke out, police said this afternoon. crews are waiting until it's safe to go inside and check on the suspect's status. >> federal data shows illegal border crossings are on the decline and that the paths migrants take into the u.s. are constantly shifting, as ktvu frank mallicoat shows us. the data also shows border crossings are down in all areas except for san diego, where crossings are up 55. >> every night, as many as hundreds of migrants from central america and across the world try to make their way across the u.s. border. new data from the u.s. customs and border protection agency this week shows. for the first time since the 1990s, san diego has become the busiest border crossing region, replacing tucson as the busiest of the nine sectors

across the southern border. immigration advocates say it's a sign that migration patterns are constantly shifting. >> in total, i expect that there are maybe over 300 people a night combining all the different locations along the border wall. here in tijuana, volunteers deliver hot coffee and food to migrants in the dark night while they await their next move, or the border agents to detain them and move them to a processing facility. something that happens almost every night is we have injuries from people who jump across and jump from the wall on the tijuana side, and it's about an 18 to 22 foot wall, a different sections. >> border patrol has set up more staging areas in the remote desert as a crackdown by mexican authorities has resulted in the migration, traffic shifting to more remote and rocky terrain. the migrants are then taken to san diego to be processed before being released, with notices to appear in immigration court.

>> what we try to help with the most is just giving some general information. a lot of people don't even know what city they're in, so we try and get them to the airport through the public transport and make sure that they can contact their families and get to their families wherever they are in the united states, newly released surveillance video appears to show sean diddy combs beating his former girlfriend, cassie ventura, at a hotel in los angeles in 2016. >> these are still images posted on tmz's website, taken from that graphic video, which first aired on cnn. the rapper, wearing just a towel, appears to chase ventura and then kick, punch and throw things at her, including a flower vase. the incident was detailed in a lawsuit that ventura filed against diddy in november, and he settled quickly. last month, federal agents raided his homes in los angeles and miami in a sex trafficking investigation. >> now we see what was a crime. despite the statute of limitations having passed. and,

on the 855 foot long wooden structure, is expected to be complete next month. crews widened the war from 20 to 36ft wide, where it's particularly vulnerable to big waves. this is after the wharf was badly damaged in storms in january 2023. the capital, capitola city manager, says a grand opening event is planned for august 14th and a soft opening will likely come in july with periodic closures. >> all right, let's get to meteorologist mark tamayo now for our final look at the forecast. >> yeah. remember all those stormy days? thankfully, we're not talking about any major rain at all. or even heat waves. just kind of a nice mellow pattern. and we'll take it into the weekend. yeah. right now we have lots of low clouds and fog near the coast and right around the bay, and looks like we'll be talking about eventually. we're going to warm up those numbers a bit into next week, but take a look at the highs from this afternoon. san francisco 63, san

jose 76. concord 74. in santa rosa in the upper 60s for this weekend. some clouds tomorrow becoming partly sunny. pretty much the same story for your sunday temperatures. not moving around too much and we're thinking just some 60s and some 70s all weekend long. here's the satellite, and it's kind of been the same weather pattern just over the past few days. we have the clouds pushing back into the bay. they try to clear back to near the coastline, and then they go back into the bay for the overnight hours and that's what we have right now. as you can see, a closer look at the satellite. we'll come in closer right now and check out some of the current numbers for the 11:00 hour. we have cooled off into the 50s, except san jose right now, checking in 61, concord 57 and santa rosa 53 degrees. here is our live camera looking out toward sfo. you can see the airport traffic here and the clouds have been drifting in over the past few hours. so tomorrow morning, the clouds near the coast and right around the bay, probably partly cloudy skies well inland and temperatures the cool spots up in the north bay, the north bay valleys in the upper 40s, but lots of 50s. so here's what the

forecast model thinks. tomorrow morning it's 7:00 and then into the afternoon hours, the clouds will try to clear back to near the shoreline. still some leftover patches right around portions of san francisco. and there is the eventual temperature range from around 60 to around 70 to 78 degrees. so this was the case today. there is a little weak system that's going to move in from the north into the weekend. this will keep the temperatures in check with the cloud cover in the morning. once the system moves on out, we will definitely warm up those numbers beginning monday and into tuesday of next week. forecast highs tomorrow will be san francisco 64, hayward 72 degrees mid 70s in concord and antioch 77. and a look ahead. your five day forecast. no major changes this weekend, but you can see into next week. we'll scale back on at least the morning fog and temperatures will be warming back up by tuesday. the warmest locations back up into the mid 80s. so kind of cool to mild and then eventually rebounding into early next week. >> all right mark thank you. an 80 year old man in oakland is dead. stated last month his 1959

red corvette was stolen from his home. ktvu henry lee spoke with the hot rods owner, who says this car has been a big part of his life. >> there's no consequences in this city. people can steal and rob dave like tellers, been robbed of his pride and joy, his bright red 1959 corvette that he's had for 18 years. >> oh, god, it's like a stab in the heart. >> he turns 80 on saturday, but he doesn't feel much like celebrating surveillance video shows two guys breaking into a garage near east 22nd street and fifth avenue in oakland on april 15th. one of them scoots into the garage and the door shuts. less than three minutes later, one of the burglars opens the door and runs off as the other guy pulls out of the garage in the corvette. he eases out onto the street. here, the corvette rolls back a bit and hits the curb because it's on an incline. >> so they knew how to drive the car because it was a stick and they just went right out. >> like teller hasn't seen his $200,000 car ever since. >> it hurts. it's because it's

my life. my whole life has been the hot rod cars my since i was 14 years old. >> he's the ultimate car in racing enthusiast. his apartment's full of memories and photos from his racing days. this is like teller in the red jacket when he bought the corvette back in 2006, he gave the convertible all his love. he rebuilt the engine, repainted the car re-upholster it, restored the car factory perfect, only to be ripped off. he thinks he could have been followed from a car show in pleasanton with scofflaws learning where he keeps his car and simply returning in broad daylight to make off with it. at this undisclosed location, lechtaler keeps this 1932 ford roadster he calls hiboy next to a harley named fat boy building little model cars. >> back in the days we'd build little models. here's pictures of me racing. here's a picture

swartz was the fairgrounds tonight. speaking with attendees about this new policy aimed at keeping people safe. >> it was last year, friday night during the contra costa fair in antioch. hair pulling, grabbing, punching and spoiled the good time young people fighting caused the fair to close. early that night, a strict new policy was put in place requiring all minors to be accompanied by an adult over 25 years old. >> we have implemented a chaperon policy for the safety of our guests, so all guests under the age of 18 need to be chaperoned by an adult of 25 years or older.

>> if there are groups with more than four minors, there needs to be an additional adult for every four kids. some knew about the fights that broke out here last year. david fernandez is 17. >> i was here last year, but i do understand because of the fights and everything. so i didn't see them. but i seen the videos though. signage at the entry gates spell out the new policy. i didn't even know that until we got up to the front. >> if a minor behaves badly, security will escort the minor and the adult chaperon off the fairgrounds. organizers want everyone to have a good time and to feel safe at the fair, especially with a lot of violence. >> you just don't know what people are going to do. i just think it's a good idea just to make sure the kids are behaving correctly. >> vendors and participants we spoke with also liked the new policy, knowing it's usually teens and young adults in crowds with no supervision. that have been troublesome in the past. they welcome this new policy we need to keep keep the contra costa county fair alive and everything. >> and if that's what it takes, we need to do that. the contra costa county fair goes until

golden state valkyrie will be playing in front of large crowds during their inaugural season. the valkyries announced today that the team has eclipsed 10,000 season ticket deposits for its home games at chase center. over 2500 deposits have been received since the team's name, colors and logo launched on tuesday. the valkyries will begin play in the 2025 wnba season. the valkyries are hosting a block party tomorrow at thrive city outside chase center. it starts at 2 p.m. and the team says fans of all ages are welcome. >> sutter health is teaming up with bay fc to launch a community health campaign empowering women athletes. the bu initiative is designed to address common barriers that prevent young women from continuing to play sports. this includes mental health, injury and recovery, and body positivity. the campaign will host local soccer clinics, make community donations, post content through a social media series, and host educational programs to learn from professional athletes. they'll also be matched giveaways that align with the bu platform. themes and values.
