the life of a man who was experiencing homelessness, who was loved by so many. and there is a plea for help in the investigation into his killing. >> i couldn't believe it. i couldn't, i really couldn't believe it. >> tonight, police say they are searching for whoever killed 48 year old raheem co. good evening . welcome to the 10:00 news. i'm alex abbott and i'm julie julie haener. >> now, as those who knew the man mourn his death, they are hoping more information will help authorities find his killer . new at ten tonight, ktvu joey jordan joins us now from antioch police headquarters. joey, what are you learning? >> well, julie and alex, those

who we spoke with, family and friends are just in disbelief that this has happened. police here are asking witnesses to step forward to help bring justice to those who love raheem . there's now a growing memorial outside the antioch gas station, where 48 year-old raheem co, who was homeless, would often hang out. >> he was around here. he was up here every day and he had a good spirit on us and he always good, good advice to everybody. >> police say a report of a man down on the sidewalk led first responders to the antioch health center along country hills drive just after 7 a.m. on wednesday, where raheem was found to be lifeless. >> it appears to be blunt force trauma at this point. >> crime scene investigators could be seen collecting a stone about the size of a grapefruit as evidence. >> he didn't deserve to die like that. although he was homeless, he was like. he was like family. you know? he's a good dude. >> close friend harold moore, who at one point experienced homelessness himself, was shocked by the loss. >> i couldn't believe it. i

never cried so much in my life, moore says. >> raheem struggled with mental illness, but the two of them had many heart to heart conversations. plans to help raheem get his life back together. >> this is what it is, man. some people have compassion, some don't. >> the organization facing homelessness does street outreach in antioch connecting the unhoused with shelter, rehabilitation and counseling. but director nicole gardner says antioch doesn't have the resources to meet the need. >> we don't have enough in the city and we are definitely lacking it in the county as well. these are real people. they have families that love them and care about them. they're good people. >> a mural on the nonprofit's bus lists the names of dozens of homeless people who have died in just the last year and a half. >> we just need to stop the violence. >> now, this is the fifth homicide of the year in antioch. police do not have a suspect in this case, but they're asking anyone who may have dash cam video of their own who was

driving through country hills drive on midnight to 7 a.m. on may 15th to give them a call. >> julie and joey, what are you hearing about how friends and family plan to honor coe's memory? >> they're so heartbroken out here. one of the men we spoke with tonight says he's putting together a public memorial service. julianne, the location is going to be at dallas ranch park here in antioch. that's may 24th at 5 p.m. they're hoping folks will come out. julie. all right, joey horda reporting live for us tonight in antioch. >> joey. thank you. new at ten tonight. the federal judge who sentenced the man convicted of attacking nancy pelosis husband says she is reopening the sentencing portion of that case. the judge says she made an error by not giving david depape a chance to speak in court on friday. depape was sentenced to 30 years in prison for the break in and attack at the pelosis san francisco home two years ago. the new sentencing date is now scheduled for may 28th.

>> the state department has issued a rare warning, urging members of the lgbtq community to exercise caution while traveling overseas. the agency warned about what it described as, quote, the potential for terrorist attacks, demonstrations or other violent actions against u.s. citizens, particularly in tourist locations and at pride celebrations. the warning comes just two weeks before the start of pride month, which is observed in june. it also comes at the same time that san francisco gets ready to celebrate harvey milk day. ktvu. tori gaines has our story tonight. >> pride flags waved in the wind as a band marched their way to jane warner memorial plaza on sunday, all in celebration of harvey milk and his legacy. >> today is not only a day of joy because i. i'm sorry i have to ring the alarm bells because it is also a time of great crisis. >> local leaders came out to shine a light on the event and the current challenges the lgbtq

community is facing. last week, the united states department of state issued a travel warning for the lgbtq community who may be traveling overseas just ahead of worldwide pride celebrations. state senator scott wiener, a member of the lgbt community himself, says the warning is nothing new. >> you demonize a community globally for so many years, it's not surprising that there could be a threat of violence. >> attendees told us that attacks against the queer community aren't just happening overseas, but right here at home in the u.s. they say it's not just physical attacks that worry them. it's also legislation across the country that is aimed at the lgbtq community. >> you know, there's a lot of heat right now. queer, trans and drag queens actually are under attack. the legislation that they're trying to pass in this country, of all places in america in 2024 is mind boggling. >> an lgbtq museum is in the works in sf. when it is built, it will be the first full scale lgbtq museum and research center

in the country. another day goes by while the city is taking steps to bolster the safety and health of lgbtq folks right here at home, it doesn't come without challenges. >> we will not deviate. we will not waver from our commitment. we will not only continue to move forward, but we will double down on those commitments and celebrate our lgbtq q community in extraordinary ways, like the museum community members we spoke to say, though, safety is a concern for them, the time to be out and proud is now. >> it's a responsibility to come out and be fabulous. >> here in jane warner memorial plaza. it was a colorful celebration of life, of pride, and of harvey milk in san francisco. tori gaines, ktvu, fox two news. >> some 2000 graduate student workers at uc santa cruz say they will go on strike tomorrow morning. the walkout involves teaching assistants, researchers and other academic workers. their union leaders say the

strike is to protest the uc system's crackdown on pro-palestinian demonstrations on college campuses across the state. it's still not clear how long the strike will last. uc administrators say the walkout violates the no strike clause in the student workers contract. >> new at ten. we're learning new details about a shooting by san jose police this afternoon. a suspect was left with life threatening injuries and new at ten ktvu. lamonica peters was at the scene of the shooting. lamonica what are we learning from police? >> alex right now, police say they don't have a lot of information. and as you can see, this is still a very active scene out here. they're still investigating. but one of the things that they did tell us is that none of the officers involved in this shooting were hurt, and as far as they know, no one else other than the suspect was injured. >> i probably counted about like maybe 15 cop cars got off on capitol, was waiting on delay on story and just cop after cop

after cop. >> san jose police say around 4:11 p.m. sunday afternoon, they responded to a call of someone shooting a gun on comer drive. police say they don't know what prompted the shooting. >> when officers arrived on scene, the suspect was still actively discharging a firearm, prompting an officer involved shooting witnesses say a silver van may have been involved in the shooting incident. >> sergeant garibay says after officers shot the suspect, the person was given medical aid at the scene by emergency responders. >> we can't tell you that no officers were struck by gunfire at this time. the suspect was hit by officer gunfire and was transported to a local hospital with life threatening injuries. >> police didn't provide any other information about the suspect and say they'll need time to process any witness or video information. in the meantime. one resident says he's hoping that he and his children can get back into their home soon. it's very challenging because you talk to an officer and they just tell you to wait and wait and wait and, i don't

seem to get an answer or a timeline, so it's a little frustrating. now, there are still residents here that have not been able to get back into their apartments right now. there are still people waiting outside, and police say that they are continuing to investigate, that. they still have to process evidence, talk to the officers involved and any other witnesses involved who may have seen what happened here today. they also told us that they don't expect to have another update tonight, but if they do, they'll post that on twitter or x, and they hope that the police chief will have an update sometime on monday. >> all right, alex, we'll look for new details in this investigation. lamonica peters live for us in san jose tonight. lamonica thank you. contra costa county is continuing to deal with a shortage of ambulances in recent weeks. ambulance services were reduced to level zero, which means no units available for transport. the county fire chief told the board of

supervisors last week that part of the problem is getting patients transferred to hospitals, an issue he's been working to resolve. >> we have also started to institute, some off load policies at hospitals, where after a certain point in time, we become much more engaged with their staff to, essentially work very aggressively with their staff to get that patient transferred to the hospital, but that's around. >> fire chief burchard said the wait time to offload patients is typically an hour far longer than the state and county standard of 20 minutes. coming up tonight here on the 10:00 news, part of highway one in big sur, reopening ahead of schedule, how crews were able to work quickly to be able to open in time for memorial day weekend and a pretty nice weekend. >> overall, temperatures went down a little bit and then they came up a little bit today. what's the rest of the week look

half moon bay. this started around 130 on satuay mning on airport street in the princeton by the sea community. cafire says the flames spread from a trailer over to that storage business, leaving eight units damaged. but the busines

owner says only one of those units was badly damed. the others were affected by smoke. one customer was at e facility at the time of the fire, but there were no injuries. cal fire is still working tonight to figure out the cause of that fire. also new at ten. crews near calistoga are cleaning up tonight after a fire burned a home under construction. this started just before 5:00 tonight along franz valley school road. no one was inside that home at the time, and there were no injuries. cal fire says it did get help from some neighboring agencies, including napa county, sonoma county, calistoga and saint helena. >> part of highway one has now reopened following repairs to a section that was damaged by storms earlier this spring. up until friday, the highway had been closed since march 30th after a slip out destroyed the southbound lane. residents and visitors can now get through without having to wait for convoys that were only twice a day. caltrans worked in two shifts to reopen the highway ahead of memorial day weekend. cranes were brought in to lift

crews over the ocean so they could safely get to that damaged section of the roadway, and we were able to drill 40 vertical and 75 horizontal bars in here, which really act as a grid to stabilize that southbound lane. south of big sur, highway one is expected to reopen in the fall, and a complete repair to the northern section is set for next year. >> a new shuttle service is starting at california's oldest state park this week, as it continues to recover from a devastating wildfire. the 2020 icu fire burned 97% of big basin redwoods state park in santa cruz county. the free shuttle marks the biggest increase in service since the park's reopening in july of 2022. shuttles will run from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. starting memorial day weekend, all the way through labor day. it's a chance for visitors to see all the regrowth and signs of wildlife returning to that forest. >> a group of volunteers spent their sunday cleaning a popular road in the oakland hills east

bay trash pandas has been meeting twice a month since last year, removing litter and trash from illegal dumping on grizzly peak boulevard. so far, the group has removed more than 17 tons of waste. they've also been pushing for basic services along that stretch of road. >> this is really the best view in the bay area, and it's a real shame that it's covered in trash. so getting the mountain cleaned up. but on a broader level, you know, we really want uc berkeley in the city of oakland to step up and put in some trash cans and do regular cleanups up here. i mean, if you go to any other popular park that's what they do. >> east bay trash pandas says trash cans and recycling containers are needed at six different spots along grizzly peak boulevard. the group says it's always looking for more volunteers. >> tonight, utility crews in houston continue working around the clock to restore power to people there. after thunderstorms and hurricane force winds caused widespread destruction across the city last week. authorities say at least

seven people died. those storms damaged businesses, uprooted trees and shattered many windows on downtown skyscrapers. a tornado also touched down near the northwest houston suburb of cypress. really severe weather there. >> yeah, well, here in the bay area, nice mild day across the bay area. our chief meteorologist, bill martin here now with an early look at the workweek forecast. >> yeah, the workweek is coming up and the weather is kind of doing what it did last week, which is sort of not a heck of a lot. we've got a pattern that has this ridge a little further offshore and then a little trough right over here, and that this thing right here, that little trough is going to stick around. and as it sticks around, that sets us up with a whole bunch of mild weather. so here's what the model does. you can see the setup here. you can see the trough here. and then as we go through time you see this is over 5 or 6 days. but you see the trough just hangs out. so there's going to be very very little or subtle changes. i know that's a lot of lines and everything, but the basic idea this is, is that you've got this

trough that's going to be lingering and that's enough to do it. that's enough to bring temperatures down to where they were today. essentially. i think we'll see a lot of numbers like this throughout the week. we will see a warmest day on the week towards the middle, up to maybe 84, 85, in the warmest spots, but overall it's a very kind of pleasant, mild week ahead. air quality should be fine. fog in and out at the coast. the fog broke out today. the inversion got blown up and i think the inversion is going to be around kind of weak or it's going to be weak tomorrow. so we will see fog kind of burn off again. but then after that it will come back in earnest, especially on tuesday and wednesday. so there you go. that's the short term. when i come back, we'll look at the long range forecast and see what we can expect for next weekend. >> all right. we'll see you in a bit. bill steffen and ayesha curry eat, learn play foundation renovated the schoolyard at piedmont elementary school. students there are learning about insect pollinators right now. so this revamp that finished up on wednesday included new butterfly and flower murals. there's also new plants that attract pollinators like bees and moths. kids can

also get outside and get moving at the new multi-purpose sport courts and play structures. >> the animal rescue foundation held a special fundraiser in walnut creek today to raise money for its rescue and adoption services. the event is called joy bound around town. organizers held a parade, pet walk and a pet wellness festival and a best dressed contest, giving visitors a chance to see some of the pets that are available for adoption. the rescue foundation had the goal of raising $110,000 by the end of the day, and they say they were able to exceed that goal. donations are still being counted, but as of tonight, there were able to raise at least $110,000 in today's event. this is the 24th year the organization has put this on. >> celebrating greek culture in oakland today. why? many people make it a point to be part of this unique event. >> every year and thousands of people across the bay area flock

up today. this was the event's 52nd year of bringing the community together. i'm up on a frosty barrel. hundreds of people showed up today to the greek cathedral of the ascension. visitors enjoyed a variety of greek foods, from grilled meat skewers to fried pastries. musicians strum some tunes on traditional greek string instruments, and dancers entertain the crowds. locals tell us they come out every year to enjoy everything this three day event has to offer the music, the live bands i enjoy, the vendors that are selling their, their wares, whatever

they're selling. >> everything is so great and the weather is perfect. >> and according to their eventbrite, almost 11,000 people attended this year's festival. more than 20,000 runners took to the streets of san francisco today for the historic bay to breakers race. it was the 113th year of the event that is always full of costumes and fun traditions. ktvu is amanda quintana has more tonight from san francisco. >> it's like there's nothing else like this in the city or like the country kind of or not kind of. yeah. so just because there's nothing else like it, like naked people, costumes running all the great things, all the great things making their way through the streets of san francisco. >> runners took off in waves, some of them part of teams tethered together to keep their pace going. this group with 40 women. we're the oldest, all women's racing team in the country. >> we have women who are 80

years old on our team, who are setting national records still, and then post-collegiate runners. >> so we choose, costumes every year that we feel like really represents the bay area represents women. and so this year we went with park rangers because we run in golden gate park every single day. >> one of the most creative costumes, the painted ladies. wow. we're structural engineers. >> and so we wanted to build a structure. and what better than the painted ladies and the classics? >> i just figured everyone's been looking for me for a while, and i was like, you know, maybe they'll find me today. >> runners take the half mile challenge up hayes hill before going through golden gate park and ending along the great highway. >> everybody's just having fun and just relaxed and that's what i wanted to enter back into. >> racing bay to breakers is known for being a welcoming environment with over-the-top outfits and funky traditions like throwing tortillas at the starting line. this runner has been bringing tortillas for 20

fog created issues for the helicopter. at least 40 rescue teams responded to that area. >> antioch's mayor traveled to china today to promote the city's deep water ports and industrial region. mayor lamar hernandez thorp will be meeting with government and business officials in hong kong and chongqing. he will be there for a week until sunday the 26th. this year's trip is focusing on green developments and deepening international relationships. >> we're going to be promoting our opportunities for sister city relationships. that's something that i learned was critically important when we spoke to secretary blinken. when i was at the us conference of mayors, he said, we need to keep promoting these opportunities so that overall relations with china, continue to get better as opposed going sour. >> the mayor's trip is organized by china's silicon valley, a nonprofit founded in 2012 to facilitate business and cultural exchange between china and silicon valley. >> us national security adviser jake sullivan was in jerusalem

today to meet with israeli prime minister benjamin netanyahu and israeli president isaac herzog. they discussed a plan by the united states that calls on saudi arabia to recognize israel and to help the palestinian authority govern gaza. in exchange, the war torn region would be put on a path to eventual statehood. netanyahu opposes palestinian statehood and has typically rejected those proposals. the israeli prime minister says israel will maintain control over gaza and partner with local palestinians who are unaffiliated with hamas or the palestinian authority. saudi arabia has long called for an independent palestinian state to be created along israel's 1967 borders, with east jerusalem as its capital. however, hardliners in israel have significant influence over netanyahu's government, and they oppose a two state solution. they also support israeli settlements on territory the palestinians would like to call their own. today, president

biden called for an immediate cease fire in the war between israel and hamas during a commencement address at morehouse college. the president's comments come amid increasing pressure for a cease fire as the war now approaches its eighth month. tonight, fox's lucas tomlinson has more from the white house. >> smoke rising over the gaza strip sunday after an israeli air strike reportedly killed at least 27 people, mostly women and children. >> it's a humanitarian crisis in gaza. that's why i've called for an immediate cease fire. >> during a commencement address at morehouse college in atlanta, president biden said his administration is working on a deal to end the fighting altogether and build a lasting and durable peace. as the war between israel and hamas nears its eighth month. >> what's happening in gaza and israel is heartbreaking. >> on fox news sunday, house republican conference chair elise stefanik, speaking from jerusalem, blasted the biden administration's decision to curb delivery of some weapons to

criminal trial involving alleged hush money, is set to resume tomorrow. fox news cb cotton has the latest now on that trial from new york, as it wraps up after five weeks. >> former president donald trump's criminal hush money trial is nearing its end. monday is expected to wrap up testimony by trump's attorney, michael cohen, one of the final witnesses called by the prosecution as trump's defense team completes cross examination. >> the prosecution's case is so weak that it's very hard to imagine that anyone can look at this and think that president trump is truly guilty of a crime, because he is not. >> once cohen is done testifying , prosecutors appear poised to rest their case. still, trump's lead lawyer, todd blanch, left open the possibility that trump could take the witness stand himself, telling the judge last week he planned to discuss the possibility with the former president over the weekend. throughout the case, trump has been barred from publicly commenting on witnesses and jurors due to an ongoing gag order. but thursday, nearly a

dozen house republicans flocked to the manhattan courthouse, lending their support to trump and speaking out on his behalf. >> they want to be in his cabinet. they want to curry favor with him. they want to audition for being his running mate. it's just sad, trump maintains he is innocent of any wrongdoings and says the case is an attempt to keep him off the campaign trail with less than six months remaining until election day. >> meantime, president joe biden, speaking to voters, took aim at trump while campaigning in detroit. >> as they say, where i come from, this guy is a different breed of cat. he's not your typical republican. the judge told lawyers to be ready for closing arguments as soon as tuesday in new york. >> cb cotton, fox news music mogul sean diddy combs apologized today for beating his former girlfriend. >> his comments come after a video was released late last week and obtained by cnn. it allegedly shows combs kicking, hitting and dragging his then girlfriend cassie ventura at a los angeles hotel in 2016.

coverage here at ktvu. we want to introduce you tonight to napa first vietnamese owned winery, ktvu. >> claudine wong introduces us to the ceo of ardi winery and tells us how the winemakers are hoping to make a name for themselves in the wine industry. >> when we started here in 2011, everything was dead, and so a lot of originally it was a japanese garden. they had like four full time gardeners. and then when we took over, we turned on the water and started planting and kind of changed things around a bit. >> a walk through ardi winery is about honoring the past and breaking new barriers for the future. back in the 80s and 90s,

this spot was known as a first for japanese saki in napa. today under new owners, it's all about a first in wine. >> we are the first vietnamese owned winery in napa, so the chairman of the board, his name is don van nguyen. we call him mister dom. he came here and felt the way that everyone who comes to napa feels, which is that it's beautiful and amazing. and he wanted something here for his family. and then it's kind of been a way to share vietnamese culture. this tasting room was designed in the style of halong bay. the art on the wall is original art from vietnamese artists. our our brand names like julie haener not is a story, a fable from vietnamese culture. so it's a way for us to kind of share culture. >> ardi, which signifies sunrise or morning time in vietnamese, says the goal isn't to fit into a napa mold, but to create a space of their own. >> i think if we look at the napa wine world from the

outside, it still feels very exclusive. it still feels like it's pretentious and it's just, i mean, it's beautiful, it's a wonderful place, but that is a feeling that i think a lot of people have. i mean, i've heard, comedian jo koy joke about how wine was for white people. so, like, there is this idea that it is an exclusive experience and it doesn't have to be right. wine at the end of the day is fermented grape juice, right? this is this is what it is. and it's been a part of many cultures for a very long time, and it can be a part of anyone's household. we are entering our warehouse, and this is where we store all the barrels for aging. >> phan says vietnam doesn't have a history with wine, so originally the company intended to export what they created to vietnam, but now they've shifted their focus to the u.s. and opened this tasting room right as the pandemic hit in the pandemic that you guys did that anyway, how has that been? >> really hard. >> there's honesty. it's

difficult. >> yeah. so we opened in july of 2020, and that's after we had finished renovating the space, and then suddenly it was only outdoor. but then we also had massive wildfires that year. so it wasn't safe to be inside because of covid, but it wasn't necessarily safe to be outside because of smoke, hoping the toughest part of the road is behind them. >> they are now expanding their offerings with cultural events and with pan-asian food pairings. >> this is our 100, not sauvignon blanc with the lychee chocolate. this sauvignon blanc comes from morgan ranch and this one is, won double gold at the san francisco chronicle wine competition. >> hospitality director candice markovich wilson treated us to a tasting of ardi winery wines paired with chocolate made in san francisco, inspired by the diverse flavors of vietnam, including one flavor that is described as savory pho with a side of sriracha. >> this one comes from cherry house vineyard, and i think that's the perfect description of this palate. a lot more kind of those cherry notes. and this

getting ready for the workweek to begin. >> and we've got a weather pattern that is not going to be that much different than last week, which was kind of a mild pattern. some breezy conditions. this is a long range model. i kind of drew these guys in here so you could see the this trough that sort of lingering and you'll see it. you can see these lines right here right. so that's the trough. so see it's it kind of lingers. and that's why it's just kind of a saggy trough. and that just means nothing's changing man i mean it's not going to get hot for sure. fire danger stays down. air quality is not bad. and then right around here somewhere around saturday, sunday it does change the flow. and then that temperatures potentially on saturday, sunday. cool even more. but that trough will kind of move on. so what i just say this week is a lot like last week and it'll be a lot. you know what today was like tomorrow is going to be like that too. these were the highs from today. i say like that too. i mean there'll be some sun at the beaches, even fog will come back in earnest on sunday, maybe

tuesday night into sunday and monday. but in the meantime these are the highs from today. highs tomorrow will be pretty close to these and we just ride it out. it's just how it's going to go this week. it's just well to the north you can't really can you see it. you can't really see it. you can kind of see the trough in here because you can see the greens representing rising air or unstable air. and so that trough just lingers. and with that we have temperatures like these. we have a big push of fog. we have a deep marine layer. so deep in fact at times today it just went away. the fog is trying to regroup, but by tomorrow morning model says not on not. not enough of an inversion for fog to be there. so all this cool air is up into the sacramento valley. it tries to form the fog under by cooler waters down in monterey on tuesday morning, and then a little bit by tuesday afternoon, along the peninsula. and then you see wednesday morning, the fog comes back in earnest and then burns off in the wednesday night. so that that is that's day after day of the same kind of thing that that's exactly kind of what happened today to that fog burn off. and so when

you saw that, that that cycle of fog burn, fog burn, and then the, you know, they're not there, that's kind of how this whole week's going to go. so kind of warm, kind of mild, never gets cool unless you're right at the coast temperature footprint like this will be pretty much the order of the week as we have greens representing 60s right along the coast and then inland spots for tomorrow. low 80s like today pretty much. but just again, it's really flat line for sure. not a big change. all week. the warmest day will be tuesday and then on the weekend that when i showed you the jet stream, just change around a little bit. it cools off a little bit more, but it's still just a mild pattern, which is not bad. it's going to give us good air quality and certainly fire danger. that's not as bad as it could be, julie. >> all right, bill, thank you. >> one of the bay area's top high school athletes put on a free football camp for kids today in danville. dozens of kids showed up for the first annual marco jones football skills camp at san ramon valley high school. it was open to kids grades three through eight, and

narrator jim otto has passed away. otto was a true legend of the game. he was the raiders first ever draft pick in 1960, and from the time he arrived in oakland to when he retired in 1974, nobody embodied the silver and black more than double zero. a ten time all-pro center who started every game over his 14 year career, he was as tough as they come and one of the hardest hitting centers of all time. otto played in the raiders first super bowl in january of 1968, and 12 years later, he was inducted into the pro football hall of fame. jim otto, gone at the age of 86. xander schauffele

he will no longer be known as perhaps the best golfer to have never won a major. after a record setting performance at the pga championship this afternoon. final round at valhalla in louisville, kentucky, bryson dechambeau needed this birdie on 18 to tie schauffele for the lead. yes, it drops. he's pumped as he heads to the clubhouse at -20. about a half hour later, schauffele on 18 for the birdie and the win lips around and in. and the 30 year old shoots a final round of 65 to finish at 21 under par. that's the lowest score in major championship history. his wife maia obviously thrilled. schauffele raises the wanamaker trophy. he is the 11th golfer to go wire to wire at the pga championship. the giants bats finally waking up in a three game series against the colorado rockies. and before the game, a
