7:01 am
the dog for a walk. a little cool out it is, i know, and it's going to get cooler on the high temps, that's for sure. as we head into the next couple of days. but i got a feeling today will be pretty nice, if you don't mind a little breeze, because that'll pick up only patchy fog. lots of sunshine. temperatures mainly 6070 of a north wind holds court. then santa rosa will hit 80. if not, they'll be about 77. all right. sounds here 7:00 in the morning on a thursday. and he begins with, the let's get it started with the richmond bridge, steve, because i do see some slow traffic there approaching marin county. >> we don't have any problems. and i do like this commute because we haven't had a lot of issues, at least not in the last hour or two. but there are slowdowns. but what i think is going to happen is it's going to be slightly lighter in the morning. and then this afternoon we're going to get the getaway crowd. for people who like to make it a four day weekend, this is westbound highway four, getting over the hill to bay point slow, and we do have a backup at the bay bridge. so

7:03 am
us. the cash came from the fees for entrance to the fair and for parking. >> i don't know what the exact circumstances or they had a car or not, but apparently from what i saw in an email from the fair itself, was somebody walked up to the person that or persons that were putting the money in the bank and put a gun up to their head, basically, and then the rest is history. >> now, organizers of the county fair say they may now have to cut back on next year's plans for free, fair activities to help make up for this loss. there's no word from police yet on descriptions of whoever stole that money, and california lawmakers want to do more to stop smashing grab robberies. the state senate and the assembly passed separate packages of bills to increase the penalties for organized crime rings to allow thefts to be combined so they can be prosecuted as grand theft, and also allow retailers to get restraining orders against convicted shoplifters.
7:04 am
>> it's a good day for retailers. we think these will provide a number of tools for law enforcement, for retailers and for district attorneys that we think will change the narrative on how california will address retail thefts throughout the state. >> it's a good start, but it does not solve the problem by any means. we need to reform proposition 47 and a separate effort is underway to repeal parts of prop 47, which voters approved in 2014. >> it reclassified felony thefts under $950 as misdemeanors. >> two businesses in san leandro were damaged when a driver slammed into a wall at a shopping center. investigators say a car hit a wall that separates chase bank from the hawaiian grill restaurant, damaging both of them. this says what happened on lewelling boulevard near washington avenue around 4:00 yesterday afternoon. one person had a minor injury was taken to the hospital. the cause of this crash is still being investigated. across the bay here is the owner of two shuttered fisherman's wharf

we talked to some people flying out of the bay area this morning who had a couple of different ideas of how they're spending their long weekend. >> we're heading to omaha, nebraska, and what's in omaha, nebraska, we're going to go take a tour with our grandparents to see what life was like before electricity going to strongsville, ohio, and what's in strongsville, ohio. >> it's a music trivia group that we've been together for about 25 years, and we meet every year from all over the country. >> i have no idea what a music trivia group is, but that is some of the plans that we will see this weekend. in general, triple a predicts this memorial day weekend to be the second busiest on record since 2000. on the roads, people traveling by car are likely to set a new record, with more than 38 million people planning a road trip, a spokesperson says. memorial day weekend will set the tone for travel for the rest of the year, and that could be promising. >> we haven't seen numbers like this from memorial day in nearly
7:10 am
20 years, not since 2005 that we've seen numbers this big, when we talk about the pandemic again, we're not just talking about pre-pandemic numbers. we are surpassing pre-pandemic numbers. so that tells you a lot about how people are viewing travel these days. >> in california, that number is about 4.5 million people traveling for the weekend by car for airlines, tsa is expecting as many as 3 million people in a single day. that's likely set to happen tomorrow, the faa says today could be the single busiest travel day since 2019. some popular hot spots on the agenda by flight florida, las vegas and denver, which the faa says is new to the top of their list. experts predict if this weekend's numbers reach what they are expecting to see, then we could expect to see a surge of fliers and travelers this summer at about close to 300 million people, from now until the end of august. we're live this morning in oakland. i'm james torres, ktvu, fox two

7:12 am
little bit better now, you can kind of see it there was a fire here on the shoulder out. let me put the arrow here. you can kind of see it. right. well it's there, it's on the right and traffic is slow. well before that from almost highway 101 there's the emergency vehicle there. so it does get better right after that. seven an 11. let's get back to the desk. >> the smoke is about, i'd say 100, 100ft up. this has probably been the biggest fire i've seen. >> smoke from a fire in redwood city at a metal scrap yard caused air quality concerns. miles away. what it took for firefighters to get that fire under control. >> the city of oakland is selling its stake in the coliseum. why? the group that wants to repurpose that prime piece of real estate has another big hurdle in its plans to vitalize the area

northbound 280 near bert avenue. it was there on the freeway and you can see a little indicator that i put up there. the traffic was slow as the firefighters are on the shoulder working that fire. there's no more smoke, but right there and you can kind of see it here. you can kind of see some activity on the right hand side. you can see one of the fire trucks there. but before all this, you can't see all that slow traffic. so give yourself plenty of time to do that. if you're driving on any of the bay area bridges, i think the same material bridge looks pretty good heading out to the high rise, and we also do have westbound bay bridge backed up to the maze. 718 let's talk about today's weather. and here's steve. >> thank you, kind sir. we'll get right to it here. cooler pattern. more so friday saturday before a little rebound on sunday into monday. but today is that kind of that tweener day. but temperatures are dropping and if you're heading out sacramento, lake tahoe, monterey, santa barbara, la been socked in big time with the may gray. even palm springs dropping
7:20 am
to a comfortable night. that sweater weather for palm springs. oh my gosh. but it does look like some thunderstorm activity could pop up in tahoe if you're going there. especially i think over the weekend 40s, 50s, mainly 50s on the temps, upper 40s, 50s here. that system that's just coming out gave record rainfall to seattle. by the way, is the western edge of that is going to deepen over us. that will allow cooler weather. little sunny today, breezy, only some patchy fog. otherwise we're looking good to go. and if you want cooler and windy weather friday and saturday for you, if you want a little warmer sunday. monday. >> all right steve thank you. time now 719 today a plan to require camps advertisers to disclose any content of artificial intelligence will go before the fcc. the chair of the federal communications commission says consumers have a right to know when ai tools are being used. now, if this is approved, the rules would apply to broadcast tv and radio ads, but not to digital or streaming platforms. officials hope to have those requirements in place

7:25 am
are contributing to a sharp increase in ticket prices. they say plan your trip months ahead, but after you book your flight, keep checking back to see if there are better rates available and you might be able to get an adjustment. travelers can now find southwest tickets with the help of google flights. it's a significant change for southwest . previously, it only advertised fares on its own site, with flight options not visible on google. this move should make it easier for customers to compare prices on google's powerful flight search engine. southwest says it's part of a pilot. it's a program, and that bookings still have to be made through the actual southwest website. >> all right. gasia time 725 mobile medical units are going to military veterans who are homeless or at risk and are living on the streets. now, last year, the va launched these portable clinics in 25 cities. the vans or trucks go from place to place, offering a private space for eligible military veterans to meet with medical providers. the mobile medical team says they bring the clinic directly to their patients.

7:31 am
we do have a lot of slow traffic there. if you are driving on the westbound bay bridge, you will see that traffic is backed up here at the toll plaza. it's not unusual, but today's going to be a tough traffic day. we're going to have the normal commute mixed in with people who are trying to get away a little early for the memorial day weekend, and that's always a busy. i think thursday might even be busier friday evening is busy, but friday morning we're not predicting a big commute as some people will already be away for the weekend. this is a look at the san mateo bridge that traffic is moderate. 730 let's get back to the headlines. okay, sal. >> thank you. fire investigators in pleasanton will be at the scene of a deadly house fire looking for the cause of it. it broke out last night just before midnight. ktvu. allie rasmus is out there. one person has died. we know that. and you have all the latest details. good morning. allie >> good morning dave. yeah. one the fire is now out and firefighters have since left the scene here after keeping an eye on any hot spots overnight. but
7:32 am
fire investigators still need to come in and do their work to determine how this all started. this is what's left of the home here behind us. this is in the pleasanton hacienda mobile home park off vineyard avenue. the fire again put out and it did not spread to any other homes in this community. but sadly, one of the people who lived in this home died in this fire. it started just before midnight this morning. a neighbor told us that right around that time is when they heard an explosion and a neighbor shared this. still picture of the flames with us. shortly after they heard that loud noise. they said that a woman who lives in the home ran out calling for help, asking her neighbors for help. she got a garden hose and tried in vain to put out some of the fire. shortly afterwards, firefighters arrived. now the woman said that her husband was trapped in the home, and neighbors say that her husband relies on a wheelchair. she was not able to get him out. a team of five firefighters started to go inside the house to rescue the man when they experienced something that firefighters call a flashover.
7:33 am
that's when the contents inside a home heat up so quickly above 1000 degrees that they spontaneously ignite, all at once. >> decision to aggressively go in and do what we could, knowing that there was somebody in there, but like i said, the conditions changed on them pretty quickly and they had to pull back out. >> so firefighters had to retreat. they were not able to go into the home. the man died in the fire. luckily, no firefighters were injured and they were able to put out the fire fairly quickly after that. but another neighbor told us that the couple, who lives in this home, have been here for several years. she described them as wonderful people and neighbors. >> super nice, super nice, very kind, always caring. so we need to really pray for them and their families as. >> again, how this fire started is something fire investigators will have to determine. they're expected to be here later this
7:34 am
morning to start their work. but again, one person, sadly, a man who lived in this home here at this pleasanton hacienda mobile home park died in the fire. his wife went to the hospital. we don't know the extent of her injuries or how serious they were, but some of the neighbors we talked to said she was able to escape the fire before firefighters arrived. they did take her to the hospital anyway to get checked out. live in pleasanton, allie rasmus, ktvu, fox two news. okay. >> allie. thank you. time now. 733 firefighters in redwood city finally put out a big fire at a scrap yard. but not before all of the smoke that was generated caused air quality concerns for several nearby cities. very thick black smoke, as you see here, rose above that scrap yard near the port of redwood city. the fire battalion chiefs told us. the fire broke out about 3:00 after a pile of cars and scrap metal went up in flames, and the smoke drifted far into parts of santa clara county. no injuries were reported, but
7:35 am
health officials urge people who were sensitive to smoke to stay inside. >> i kind of just smelled, maybe like burning. burning metal and burning, just burning metal and burning maybe rubber. we have a respirators that we put on. so we had them on firefighters had it all under control by 5 p.m. >> bay area health officials say air quality in that area should be back to normal this morning, but investigators are still searching for the exact cause of the fire. >> a historic ship is leaking diesel fuel and oil into the delta. the aurora dates back to 1955. it started to sink near stockton yesterday. it's now spilling gallons of fuel into the delta and prompting a quick response from several agencies. fish and wildlife crews deployed a boom to keep the oil from spreading. there are also plans underway to refloat the vessel. it is still unclear as to caed the ship to sink. >> our time is now 735. it appears that the number of drug
7:36 am
overdose deaths in san francisco are going down. new information from the office of the medical examiner shows 56 people died from drug overdoses last month in san francisco, down from 71 in january, 63 in february and 68 in march. >> the department of public health says this april's numbers are 21% lower than what we saw in april of last year. still more than 250 people have died of overdoses in san francisco since the beginning of the year. in comparison, the city reports 275 overdoses in the same time period last year. the health department says it hopes the availability of more treatment programs will help save lives. >> our time is 736. for the first time, the number of americans who use marijuana every day is higher than the number of people who drink every day, researchers say. this shift has been trending for about 40 years now, as recreational marijuana becomes mainstream and legal around most of the country . the survey found that in 2022,
7:37 am
almost 18 million americans used cannabis every day or almost every day. that's compared to 15 million people who drink every day or almost every day. >> triple a says today and tomorrow will likely be the busiest travel days for memorial day weekend. for people driving and flying to their destinations. triple a predicts this could be the second busiest memorial day on record since the year 2000. on the roads, travelers could set a new record with more than 38 million people planning a road trip. this holiday would likely set the tone for travel for the rest of the year. >> we haven't seen numbers like this from memorial day in nearly 20 years, not since 2005 that we've seen numbers this big, when we talk about the pandemic again, we're not just talking about pre-pandemic numbers. we are surpassing pre-pandemic numbers. so that tells you a lot about how people are viewing travel these days. >> here in california, nearly 5 million people will be traveling on the roads this weekend. as many as 3 million are expected
7:38 am
to fly in a single day. well gasia, that's where i depend on sal castaneda. >> oh for sure. yeah so what's happening in our commute right now, sal? >> well, dave and gasia right now, it's still pretty crowded out there. and again, it's going to be a tough day, for the traffic all over the bay area because you're going to get the morning commute, which is typical. we can see some of it now with our cameras here. you can see it's backed up to the maze. and then we're going to get people who are leaving for the weekend. a lot of people do leave on thursday to try and make it a four day weekend. and well, it's going to mix in with that afternoon commute. so just as long as you know and you're not surprised by that san mateo bridge traffic looks okay. that vehicle hits in the center of the vi. there's been there now for more than an hour just conked out it, but it's not causing a big delay. we had an earlier grass fire northbound 280 on the shoulder near ray street. that caused a lot of slow traffic on 280. some people sticking with 101, but it's not terribly unusual to have this kind of slow traffic heading west. 738 let's get the weather
7:39 am
started with steve. >> thank you sir. we'll get right to it here. we'll look ahead to tomorrow in case you're heading out and about a sacramento. only 80 degrees on friday. that's it, pretty cool for us here. lake tahoe will have a lot of cloud cover bubbling up. could be a few isolated showers. monterey is more fog. same for santa barbara. and los angeles and palm springs. only 90 degrees. probably breezy to windy as well. today's forecast. sunny for all. there's a teeny bit of fog. san mateo coast down to santa cruz. that's about it. it's kind of been late to get started, but it is popping up a little bit. temps will be near average if santa rosa doesn't get the north wind, they'll probably be 77, but they've exceeded expectations the last two days, so i'll hold on to it for today. livermore are down, redwood city down, san jose down. all three there into the 70s. tomorrow will be significantly cooler. the coolest day looks to be saturday, as some of the temperatures inland and 80s today will end up probably being close to only 70 on saturday. there you can see. hold on right there. a little bit of that fall
