frank mallicoat. >> as mentioned, the travel season begins today with memorial day weekend. triple a says expect the roads and our airports to be mighty busy all summer long. ktvu james torres reports the numbers and travel plans expected this weekend. >> whether you're flying or driving, expect a big group of people alongside you. >> it's going to be a big travel season, not just memorial day weekend, but also throughout the summer. and we do think this is an indication of what's to come in the months ahead. >> triple a predicts this memorial day weekend will be one of the busiest on record by car. more than 38 million people are expected to road trip, setting a new record by plane. the faa says today could be the single busiest flying day since 2019. >> this is the first time i'm traveling ever on a memorial day weekend. >> we saw that in oakland, where some shared nontraditional tradition is going to strongsville, ohio, and what's

in strongsville, ohio. >> it's a music trivia group that we've been together for about 25 years, and we meet every year from all over the country. we're heading to omaha, nebraska. >> and what's in omaha, nebraska, we're going to go take a tour with our grandparents to see what life was like before electricity. >> many travelers, experts say, is promising for what the rest of the year could look like. >> we haven't seen numbers like this from memorial day in nearly 20 years. not since 2005 that we've seen numbers this big, when we talk about the pandemic again, we're not just talking about pre-pandemic numbers. we are surpassing pre-pandemic numbers. so that tells you a lot about how people are viewing travel these days. >> so popular hotspots by plane this year, florida, las vegas and denver, which triple a says it's new to its top list experts predict if we see some of these numbers be as high as they expect this weekend, then we can expect this summer to be some of the busiest travel we've ever seen, with nearly 300 million people traveling from now until

the end of august. reporting in oakland. i'm james torres, ktvu, fox two news. >> thank you. james. according to triple a, the worst time to drive is today between the hours of noon and 6 p.m. then tomorrow between noon and 7 p.m. now, if you want to know the best time to hit the road, you already missed your slot this morning. but you can hit the road after seven tonight. then tomorrow. the best time to leave is between 11 a.m. or after 8:00. >> fire investigators are at the scene of a deadly mobile home fire in pleasanton. it broke out just before midnight last night. as ktvu ali rasmus explains, people in the pleasanton hacienda mobile home park are mourning the death of a beloved neighbor. >> just blazing to the habits. >> that's how neighbors describe the flames seen coming from this home in the pleasanton hacienda mobile home park, where a fire broke out around midnight. neighbors identify the couple who lived here as kathy and richard lawrence of pleasanton. neighbors heard an explosion, and shortly afterwards they say

kathy ran out calling for help. her husband, richard, had mobility issues and was trapped inside. she had a garden hose. >> she was trying everything she was panicking and she just kept shouting. my husband's still in there. and that was that was sad . that was sad. >> firefighters arrived and started to go into the house to rescue the man when they experienced something called a flashover. that's when the contents in a home heat up so quickly they ignite all at once. >> all of that smoke and flammable contents kind of burst into flames. at the same time. they made the decision to aggressively go in and do what we could, knowing that there was somebody in there, but like i said, the conditions changed on them pretty quickly and they had to pull back out. >> firefighters were not able to rescue richard. he died in the fire. his wife kathy went to the hospital. >> you could just feel the heat radiating off of it. and then the smoke coming up along really thick along the ceiling. it would just started roiling out and coming out fast. >> just about every person we

spoke to on this street told us richard and kathy lawrence were wonderful neighbors. they are struck and saddened by what happened to them. >> it's so sad. beautiful couple, super nice, super nice. very kind. always caring. so we need to really pray for them and their families. >> it's one of those things you never expected to happen. it always happens to someone else and when it does, it's horrible. >> once the fire was completely out later this morning, fire investigators came to the home. >> they are going through it and trying to find evidence to determine exactly where and how this fire started in pleasanton. ali rasmus, ktvu, fox two news. >> an armed robber stole as much as $100,000 from a contra costa county fair employee. as workers were on their way to deposit the money at a bank, police say the theft happened sunday morning in antioch in the parking lot of bmo bank on summersville road. employees with the county fair were going to the bank's night deposit to deposit cash when someone held them up at gunpoint

and stole the money. the president of the county fairs board of directors says that was money paid for fair entrance and parking. >> i don't know what the exact circumstances were. they had a car or not, but apparently from what i saw in an email from the fair itself, was somebody walked up to the person that or persons that were putting the money in the bank and put a gun up to their head, basically, and then the rest is history. >> organizers of the county fair say they may have to cut back on next year's plans for free, fair activities to help make up for the loss. no word yet from police on a description of the thief. >> mayor shengtao is preparing to submit a mid-cycle budget adjustment with new priorities for the city of oakland mayor outlining priorities this morning at city hall. oakland has a projected $170 million budget deficit this year and $175 million next fiscal year. mayor says her budget adjustment is fiscally responsible, disciplined and maintains a focus on public safety, cleaning

city streets, homelessness and economic growth in order to close our current deficit, i directed city administrator justin johnson to propose a fiscally responsible but mid-cycle budget austment that prioritizes essential services in order to deliver a clean and safe city for all oaklanders while promoting economic development and opportunities over the coming weeks, the mayor's administration will be in talks with the city council about our proposed budget adjustments, and the city of oakland also reached an agreement to sell its share of the oakland coliseum. may announce city agreed to sell its share to the african american sports entertainment group. double a seg will purchase it for $105 million with the goal of redeveloping the property to include affordable housing, an entertainment and sports complex, and more jobs. the group also wants to buy the oakland a's portion of that property, as well.

>> this is a moment where east oakland is going to change. we are in healthy negotiations and they've continued and they are moving in a positive direction. and our objective clearly is to, be able to acquire that site as well. >> the deal will still have to be approved by city council. an introductory meeting is expected to take place as early as next week. >> another batch of university leaders is on capitol hill today, explaining their responses to pro-palestine protests and accusations of anti-semitism on campus. this hearing is the first featuring public institutions, as rebecca castro reports from washington, this hearing, like previous ones, got heated at times. >> school may be out for summer, but some lawmakers in washington are still demanding answers on how chaos like this was allowed to play out on campuses across the country this semester. this was the university of california, los angeles earlier

this month when dueling protests between pro-palestine and pro-israel students turned violent. >> we tried very hard to find an off ramp for student protesters so they could leave the encampment. it wasn't to be. safety became an issue for the whole community. >> ucla's chancellor is the latest college leader to be grilled by lawmakers, along with the heads of northwestern and rutgers schools that ultimately made concessions to pro-palestine protesters. >> jewish and israeli students were not consulted, and jewish and israeli students were not consulted with respect to yield back agreement. >> exactly. yield back. impractical to do that. >> it's the fourth congressional hearing on college anti-semitism, and they're known to get heated testimony from columbia's president in april inflamed campus protests, while other hearings ultimately led to the presidents of harvard and penn resigning, those who are in charge of universities, who negotiate with pro terror protesters are not doing their job, as republicans are mostly

driving this effort. while some democrats say it's just adding fuel to the fire, complaining about a problem is not a solution. >> certainly, it certainly riles people up, generates a lot of media coverage, but it didn't solve anything. >> on wednesday, ucla reassigned its police chief as the school begins investigating its response to the campus protests in washington. rebecca castor, ktvu, fox two news the justice department is suing to break up live nation, the parent of ticketmaster, over alleged antitrust violations. >> a lawsuit filed today follows a doj investigation into whether live nation maintains a monopoly in the ticketing industry. the probe was launched in 2022 and bolstered by fan complaints following a botched rollout. for tickets to taylor swifts eras tour. attorney general merrick garland says live nation relies on unlawful anticompetitive conduct to exercise control over the live events industry. >> it is time for fans and artists to stop paying the price

area. the governor of that region says eight adults and one child were killed more than 120 people were hurt, 27 remain hospitalized and some in critical condition. rescue and recovery efforts are underway now after powerful storms tore through the midwest. tornadoes in iowa devastated parts of that state, killing at least five people, leaving dozens of others injured. this video shows catastrophic damage in the wake of storms as survivors begin combing through the debris. many say they're grateful for the heroic efforts of their neighbors as well. >> from all the areas came in at and, went through house to house checking on people. >> just incredible. the response the volunteers, the community, the outpouring of help. >> the governor of iowa seeking a disaster declaration from the white house. federal storm data show the country has seen a 27% increase in the average number of tornadoes so far this year, a week before hurricane season kicked off here in the u.s. today, the federal government

released its storm predictions, saying this season could be extraordinary. >> fox's caroline shively has details out of washington. >> if you lived through hurricane idalia last year, you might be asking, can it get any worse? well, according to the national weather service, it could. >> that's the highest forecast that we've had. >> on thursday, federal forecasters predicted 17 to 25, named storms in the atlantic this year, with 8 to 13 becoming hurricanes. the average between 1991 and 2020 was 14 tropical storms and seven hurricanes. 2020 holds the record for the most named storms, with 3012 of those made landfall in the u.s. storms get a name when their winds reach 39mph. they become hurricanes. at 74, it only takes one storm to devastate a community and it's prudent to prepare now because once the storm is headed your way, it all happens so rapidly you won't have the time to plan and prepare. >> at that point, the national

oceanic and atmospheric administration is predicting a below normal hurricane season in the pacific. >> those storms usually stay out to sea. but last august, hillary became the first tropical storm to hit southern california in 84 years and caused flooding and mudslides throughout the southwest. >> it's just devastation. this is going to take a month to clean up the cost of storm damage for 2024 could also be a record breaker. >> last year, noaa reports the us was hit with 28 weather and climate disasters that each topped $1 billion. in washington, caroline shively, ktvu, fox two news well, all eyes on our weather. >> the big weekend the big holiday weekend is nearly upon us. mark, how are we looking at the weekend? >> not looking too bad. we're going to start off with a cool note, but then they'll be trending warmer over the next several days. by the way, you saw that the story of the forecast for the atlantic hurricane basin with above normal activity. but the pacific could be a different story with below normal activity expected in the pacific with the with the developing la nina. now for us

though, we have this lots of sunshine today, a bit of a breeze. temperatures around 15 to winds around 15 to 25 miles an hour, and temperatures probably not as warm as yesterday. and that's kind of the headline for us. we're heading into a bit of a cooling trend over the next 2 to 3 days. as we check out the satellite. right now, the bulk of the fog is down to our south, down towards southern california. we do have some patches closer to big sur this afternoon, but here in the bay area, lots of sunshine once again, and we'll check out some of the current numbers. it's still another warm day out towards santa rosa, concord and livermore, but today not as warm as yesterday. at least that's the expectation in san francisco. 60 one half moon bay 55 degrees wind reports right now as you can see, the winds over the next several days today, tomorrow and into saturday, it will be breezy to windy, especially for tomorrow. right now though, these values are not too bad out there. you can see around 10 to 15 miles an hour, but stronger though out toward sfo, a west wind at about 20 miles an hour. here's our live camera looking out toward the golden gate bridge. it has been a nice warm weather stretch

over the past several days, but tomorrow will definitely bring in some more low clouds out there. here's the setup though. lots of sunshine for today. we are watching this system from the north that wants to drop in and pay us a visit. that will definitely send temperatures down for friday and into saturday, and also will increase those wind speeds. now beyond saturday. looks like a bit of a warming trend that really kicks in, especially by monday for memorial day. so be watching out for that change over the next few days. pretty much the same story in the sierra. take a look at the current conditions. right now you can see temperatures in the mid to upper 50s. and as you can see for saturday, it's a cool one out there. temperatures only in the upper 50s, but then a nice recovery into sunday and into monday. back up into the 70s by monday and right around the lake tahoe area. here is the forecast model today though, showing you lots of sunshine. look what happens in a friday. we're going to thicken up the low clouds. you will definitely feel that temperature change for tomorrow, for your friday and then into the weekend. that will be the coolest day of the week. starting out the day with lots

people in the operations, content and marketing departments. tiktok laid off dozens of employees at the start of the year. the workers being affected this time around will be reportedly notified today or tomorrow. santa clara based nvidia is seeing record earnings. its stock has climbed more than 200% in the past year. it's now the third highest valued company in the world today. the stock climbed more than 10. markets closed in little more than half an hour. ktvu lamonica peters talked with the tech expert about the company's rise in value. >> nvidia is the one who control the market. about 90% of the market of those chips used to process chatgpt, you know, gemini is actually belongs to, nvidia, specializing in making

if we take a peek at the other markets, let's see if this trend is the same. and it is s&p losing almost one full percentage point, nasdaq down spending a little time on the plus side, but is now losing more than one half of 1. >> wow. i thought nvidia would help there. apparently not a high profile topic of artificial intelligence and government was the focus of a hearing by the little hoover commission in the bay area this morning. the public hearing held at the filoli visitor center in woodside. it included an overview of california's efforts to incorporate general ai into government, and looked at best practices for implementation. state secretary of government operations testified that the technology could help departments solve a range of problems in a responsible way. >> we try to not follow, you know, the rush to say, use the latest and greatest. and because it's a fun thing to do, that might be great. we use that. we apply that into a very intentional sandbox area so we

investigating what may have led up to that shooting. un says it is distributing a limited amount of aid from a us built pier off the gaza coast. trey jenks has the very latest now out of tel aviv, as israeli forces prepare for a large scale southern offensive, food shortages are getting more severe throughout the gaza strip. >> despite a significant amount of aid that's been delivered through an offshore pier built by the us military. the un world food program says it has handed out a, quote, limited number of high energy biscuits, but most of the food is still in a staging area. while the white house works with israeli officials to find safe distribution routes, it is indication this is a dynamic environment and we need to continue to refine, but aid is flowing. >> it is not flowing at the rate that any of us would be happy with. >> the efforts for more aid come as israel gears up for a big push into the city of rafah, where it says thousands of hamas fighters are blending in with

refugees. israeli officials say that offensive won't be put on hold, even after the international criminal court requested an arrest warrant for benjamin netanyahu, accusing the prime minister of attacking civilians in gaza, a charge rejected by the israeli government. >> no power on earth will stop israel from protecting its citizens and going after hamas in gaza. >> the us also standing behind netanyahu while it considers how to respond to the court. >> that decision was totally wrong headed and we commit to engaging on a bipartisan basis in finding an appropriate response. >> the icc also requesting arrest warrants for hamas leader yahya sinwar and two other top officials for their role in the october 7th massacre in tel aviv. trey yingst ktvu, fox two news pro-palestine protesters have cleared out their encampment at san jose state university just in time for the start of the commencement

ceremonies. >> asu for gaza organizers have cleared the area near the well known tommie smith, john carlos victory salute statues on campus after being camped out there for the past ten days. organizers say even though the encampment is coming down, their message still remains the same. >> we're not only here for palestinians that is the primary reason, but there is an underlying reason why we're here, and that is to fight racism in all forms. >> the university says the protest was an important opportunity to have a deeper understanding on the war. in gaza. commencement ceremonies continue on campus today through tomorrow. usf says about 25 students are on interim suspension for taking part in a pro-palestinian encampment there. they received conduct notices on tuesday. students say that the notices were indiscriminate and included both people who vacated the camp before the deadline and those who had been promised amnesty. the accused, the university of

not negotiating in good faith. usf says those involved will be given an opportunity to respond to the allegations of violating their conduct code. >> firefighters in redwood city finally put out a huge fire at a scrap yard. not before all the smoke caused air quality concerns for people in several nearby cities. thick black clouds of smoke rose above a scrapyard near the port of redwood city. the fire started around three in the afternoon yesterday, burned a pile of cars and scrap metal. resulting smoke drifted far into parts of santa clara county. no injuries reported, but local health leaders did urge people who are sensitive to smoke to stay inside. >> i kind of just smelled, maybe like burning. burning metal and burning, just burning metal and burning maybe rubber. we have a respirators that we put on. so we had them on. >> fire crews had it under control by 5 p.m. investigators still looking into the cause of the fire. two businesses in san leandro were damaged when a driver hit a wall at a shopping center. investigators say that a

car hit a wall that separates chase bank from the hawaiian grill restaurant, damaging both businesses. this happened on lewelling boulevard near washington avenue around 4:00 yesterday afternoon. one person had a minor injury, was taken to the hospital. the cause of the crash is still under investigation. >> family and friends gathered in oakland to say a final goodbye to an alameda county sheriff's dispatcher that was killed earlier this month, 37 year old antoinette finau was killed by a suspected drunk driver. friends remember her for her passion for helping others and her positivity. despite the stress of her job, always came in with such a light, a beautiful smile, a great spirit, we laughed a lot with her and she always just brought a lightness to the room. >> her job was the perfect part for her. she was there to bring people together, whether it was for help or just to be there for them. she was that part. >> finau died on may the 5th. she was hit while driving to work. at this point, the woman who hit her has not been charged

with any crime. >> almost two years after a deadly elementary school shooting in uvalde, texas, the families of the victims have announced a $2 million settlement with that city, while also filing another lawsuit against law enforcement. families capped the deal at $2 million, saying they did not want to bankrupt their own city. the deal comes with a promise for better police training, community mental health seices and a permanent memorial to the 21 people who died. yesterday's new suit is against the texas department of public safety and the federal government. it claims authorities botched their response as officers waited outside the school during the shooting for more than an hour. >> you had over 150 some odd federal officers there who also were there and stood around until until one or more breached the room at 77 minutes. sure. that was that's that was a heroic act. it was a heroic act. >> 77 minutes late, the justice department released a scathing

report earlier this year cataloging, cataloging, several failures of federal, state and local police responding to an active school shooting. now to new details about a missing student from uc davis who was last seen in san francisco. 18 year old diane marin is a first year computer engineering student. she was first reported missing on monday, according to police, marin took amtrak from davis to the bay area on friday, was last seen on mission street. right now, campus police will only say marin appeared to be in distress when she was last seen. they're not saying if they think foul play is involved in all of my friends have really tried to get the word out, sharing everything that we can on social media, really trying to like project this incident as like not something that should be occurring often and that should be addressed and handled in a very serious and a very time effective and efficient manner. uc davis police say that marin was last seen wearing a dark top, dark pants and black shoes. she's five feet, four inches tall, with black hair and brown eyes. the state trial of david

depape is now underway in san francisco. >> yesterday, jury selection began. the pap is accused of breaking into san francisco, home of congressman nancy pelosi, and attacking her husband paul with a hammer. depape is facing charges of attempted murder, burglary and assault prosecutions. >> got a video? this is a 21st century case. they have the crime actually recorded, visually. so the question would be for the defense. can you find jurors that might be more sympathetic to somebody who's got a mental illness, who believes in a bunch of conspiracy theories? >> after an error was made during sentencing to pap due back in court next week to be resentenced in his federal trial last week, he was sentenced to 30 years in jail. and experts say that's not likely to change during the resentencing that will shake up at a major attraction at san francisco's

pier 39 due to allegations of excessive spending, the chronicle reports. >> george jacob was pressured to resign as ceo of the aquarium of the bay. the chronicle says the attraction faced serious money issues and that jacob had hundreds of thousands of dollars in entertainment and travel expenses, including almost half $1 million for a trip to dubai. the new chairman says he hopes to improve finances with a successful summer tourism season . jacob will only say he left the aquarium to pursue a new project at the owner of two fisherman's wharf restaurants that closed not long after the pandemic started, is suing the city of san francisco for millions, the chronicle reports. the owner of fisherman's grotto and tarantino's alleges the city owes maintenance costs and blames the city for the neighborhood's deteriorating conditions. the owner says the issues contributed to both closures. both restaurants closed in 2020. the city attorney's office argues this is the owner's attempt to get out of paying close to $2 million owed in back rent to the city. >> up next dreaming of being on stage in front of an audience.

expression, but it's also expensive. well south bay ballet school is helping youngsters get over that financial bar with its first step program. it's this month's cool school. in downtown san jose. scottish rite temple is celebrating its 100th year with a little kick. the century old building has been the home to new ballet for four years. a haven for the six through nine year old ballerinas who are all part of their first step program. >> these kids would not have had the chance to be in a ballet room for this length of time and doing the movements that we're doing right now. if it wasn't through this program. >> new ballet is a nonprofit that, through grants, has partnered up with six san jose title one schools. they have awarded dozens of four month ballet scholarships to underserved students of color. this year's class is 31 dancers

recently surged to over 1000. >> last several weeks in particular, has seen a pretty big uptick in california sea lions here. it's something that we're experiencing up and down the coast, especially in northern california. you know, 1 or 2 every once in a while isn't an issue. but what we're seeing is some congregations of upwards of 10 to 15 of these animals in one particular area, they are big and heavy. >> officials say the sea lions are feeding on anchovies along the coast before going to the channel islands for mating season. >> it's the only time of the year oakland's fairyland is off limits to children. many attendees of the annual once upon a time at fairyland gala dressed up as their favorite storybook characters. the event featured an auction to help raise money for performances at the park and revitalization measures. parks executive director said previous galas have made a big difference at the park. >> we've launched our fairyland for all program, which is really a program about accessibility and equity, which has allowed folks who are low income to come
