francisco. merchants say it couldn't come at a worse time, and two fires in antioch keep crews busy. we're live with an update on the firefight that included aerial drops. >> this is ktvu, fox two news at 730, and it was back to back calls for firefighters in contra costa county. >> thanks so much for joining me on this thursday night. i'm heather holmes. we're going to get right to that breaking news there in antioch and check in with our tori gaines, who is live now on the scene of one of those fires with an update on the situation. tori >> good evening. yes, we're here just next to the antioch marina. i'm going to have my photographer turn so you can see where we are. fire crews just recently cleaned up. it was a busy scene when we got here, but they made quick work of this fire. as you can see, they were set up right here next to the train tracks. we're staying a little bit away from the train tracks, just for our own safety. but today several fires sparked across the east bay, keeping fire crews busy. contra costa

fire protection was able to get on scene quickly and navigate all of these different fires. now, as soon as one fire appeared to get contained, another one popped up. the warm weather and high winds didn't help. just before 3 p.m, a brush fire started on concord boulevard, but antioch was hardest hit with at least two fires. today one near slayton ranch, not far from homes in the area, and another where we're standing here along the marina. now that fire reached at least five acres and hit two alarms. this evening. video shows smoke billowing out from behind the boats nearby were just came down here for lunch. >> slash dinner, and we saw a little smolder out there and we just kept watching it and the wind started blowing and that thing just developed and went from 0 to 50ft high in flames. >> a helicopter doused the flames with water and the fire was out within a couple of

hours. now we don't have confirmation of the causes of these fires, but cal fire tells us that something as small as a spark from a chain dragging along the highway or roadway can light a brush fire. >> the biggest challenge with fighting this fire here in the marina is that it is in the two leads, and it's, it it really borders up against the water. so having to get crews and apparatus and lines out to that is pretty tough for us. we do. >> back out here live in antioch, near the marina. now you can see these tall grasses are exactly the kind of fuels that can spark and quickly become a bigger problem, particularly when it comes to these brush and vegetation fires. now, contra costa fire acknowledged that people experiencing homelessness sometimes spend time in this area, but they could not confirm if the fire was in any way, in any way related to that. but coming up later tonight, we'll hear more about fire prevention. excuse me? fire prevention from cal fire as well as contra costa fire and in ways to safely enjoy

the memorial day weekend, live in antioch. tori gaines ktvu, fox two news. >> yeah, especially as we head into those hotter summer months. all right, tori, thank you. we're also following some developing news in san francisco, where a man with a rifle was seen in the bayview district this afternoon. this all happened near the area of ingles street and armstrong avenue. sky fox skyfox flew over the scene where police responded to those reports of the armed man. police say an officer used non-lethal force to try to get the suspect to drop the weapon. they did not specify what tactic was initially used, but they say no officers fired their service weapons. >> suspect was transported to a local hospital for non-life threatening injuries due to the fact a less lethal use of force was used to take the take. the suspect into custody. the suspect did not did not sustain any gunshot wounds. >> that suspect has not been identified. police say the officer involved in today's incident is on administrative leave. as per policy, the

department plans to hold a town hall within ten days to offer more details. san francisco police, the district attorney and the office of police accountability are all investigating today's incident. a group of business owners urging san francisco to pause a repaving project in noe valley. ktvu crystal bailey here now live with me after talking with some of the merchants. so, crystal, what are their concerns as well? >> heather. restaurant owners are worried about losing business because their parklets have to come down and retail merchants are concerned they'll lose valuable sales during the holidays if the project goes through the end of the year. overall, they want the project delayed until 2025. it's a project the city says will improve the streets of noe valley, particularly on 24th street, where sections of the road will be repaved and curbs and bus stops will be fixed up. a project the city says will take about four months to complete. >> if large sections of our commercial corridor are being blocked off, people will just avoid going. >> business owners complain there is not enough detail about the scope of work being done,

and they worry about the construction during peak business months, most of our business is especially on this corridor is during the holidays. >> maybe a quarter three, quarter four. >> the contract for the work has not been officially signed. >> i think they're planning on starting work this summer, but a spokesperson with the public works department says they have been communicating with merchants every step of the way during construction. >> parklets will have to go. business owners say they expect their sales to go down by 30. >> we just don't think that that's that's acceptable. >> the city is offering a grant for businesses who will lose out during construction, but the owner of mr. digby's says it's only $5,000 and his parklet cost him $75,000 to build $5,000. >> sure, it's nothing to, you know, turn your nose up at, but it's a drop in the bucket for the amount of cost that i have already put in and will, you know, have to do again, it's not the first time the city has tried to get this done. >> one of the biggest concerns i hear from, from constituents is,

is the roads and the fact that so many of our commercial corridors have, roads that are pretty disastrous. >> they've delayed the project multiple times since 2015 after complaints from businesses. in an email from public works, the spokesperson says the work should not be delayed any longer. a smoother road is a safer road for people who drive, take transit, walk and bike. >> i know that the road here does need work, but hopefully that the city can work with us, with the merchants association and really work on something where it's a win win, win win situation and public works, says the pre-construction meeting. >> they plan to ask the contractor if they can schedule the work to avoid the period of time requested by businesses. but they cannot currently guarantee it. >> heather. okay, we'll wait and see what happens. all right. crystal bailey, thank you. a new at 730 tonight. novato police today sharing some details about two retail thefts that happened at the same shopping center earlier this week. so the first

one happened on tuesday. two people were arrested for allegedly stealing from the target at the vintage oaks shopping center. a second incident happened just yesterday at the vintage oaks, sephora. four women reportedly ran from that store, with several thousand dollars worth of merchandise. officers tried to follow the suspects, but they got away their silver nissan sedan was last seen traveling southbound there on highway 101. now, the contra costa county fair comes to an end on a scary and violent note. two fair workers robbed at gunpoint outside of a bank, costing the fair tens of thousands of dollars. the two workers were carrying cash from parking and entrance fees. antioch police say they were on their way to make a large deposit, roughly around $88,000. police say the man and woman left the fair on west 10th street and pulled up to the bmo bank on summersville road at about two in the morning on monday, when they were approached by an unknown man wearing a mask. craig cannon is president of the fair's board. he says the robbery could affect some programing for next year's

in san jose. police said today that they were able to identify him using this surveillance footage. officers were called to willow street near graham avenue back on may 17th. that's where they found 26 vandalized trees just a week after they were planted during a community event. the suspect, whose name has not been released, had an out of county warrant and has now been booked into jail. there's new video of a man who had to be airlifted after falling off a cliff near stinson beach, the marin county fire department sharing with us this video, firefighters say they received a call at about 115 of

a man who fell about 20ft while rock climbing in the steep ravine area just south of stinson beach. a chp helicopter was called in to airlift him out of the area. paramedics assessed the man and said that he had moderate injuries, which is good news. firefighters though encouraging people to enjoy the outdoors and the nicer weather, but not to do anything risky while alone. let's get a check now on the forecast with mark tamayo. >> hi there heather. yeah, another clear day out there with some mild temperatures, but you will definitely notice a drop off in those numbers. there's been a subtle cooling trend so far, but into your friday it's going to be a big drop off. with that. the cool down headed our way. take a look at the numbers from today. santa rosa 82 degrees. concord 82, oakland 68 and san francisco 64. some members just a couple of days ago, the warmest day of the week on tuesday. we had lots of 80s out there. we cooled things off a little bit today. yesterday and today, but the pronounced cooling that will move in by friday and into the weekend. here's the satellite picking up of the marine layer clouds closer to southern california for los angeles and san diego,

we have a few high clouds drifting in, so if you've looked up to the sky over the past couple of hours, that's the source of this high cloud cover moving in from the pacific, moving into the bay area. current numbers out there for the 7:00 hour, we have cooled off a bit. you can see santa rosa, 68, san francisco 57, and san jose in the mid 60s at 65. and the wind speeds is still breezy out there in a few spots. breezy to windy. sfo gusting to 35 miles an hour and san jose winds out of the north, gusting to 21 miles an hour. here's our live camera. the view from the south bay picking up on those high clouds. so kind of a nice sunset for your thursday evening. we will bring in the lower clouds first thing tomorrow morning. so scattered low clouds, partly cloudy skies, and definitely when you step outside the door, i'm thinking you'll probably want to grab the sweater or the jacket because it will be. it will feel cooler tomorrow morning to start things off for your friday, here's a look at the forecast model. it's definitely bringing in some cloud cover upper 40s to the 50s. and then into the afternoon

hours. skies becoming partly sunny, maybe some patchy cloud cover near the shoreline and no more 80s. the warmest locations in the lower 70s, so about 58 to 72 degrees tomorrow afternoon. all because this guy, this area of low pressure is dropping in from the north. so it's going to stick around for tomorrow and into saturday. saturday will be the coolest day of the week. and we're also thinking some stronger winds as well. we could have winds from around 20 to 30 miles an hour, so it could be a bit blustery out there for friday and into saturday. and then if you want the warming temperatures, you'll you'll see those showing up in the five day forecast, especially by memorial day. take a look at the forecast for tomorrow. once again it's picking up on the cloud cover. then saturday morning we're definitely in the cloud. things up. maybe add some drizzle to the forecast first thing saturday and then once the clouds clear on out, we will bring in more sunshine. but also the stronger winds move in as well. so take a look at the numbers for tomorrow. san francisco 62, concord 71, san jose 68 degrees. you will definitely notice that cooldown

for pedestrians and cyclists. the bill would require caltrans to prioritize the implementation of facilities for pedestrians,

bicyclists, and transit users as part of its biggest road maintenance program. the bill's author, san francisco state senator scott wiener, also directs caltrans to develop a transit priority policy to help improve transit reliability and accessibility. the state senate also passed a bill authored by senator wiener that would allow cities to create outdoor entertainment zones. brick and mortar businesses could serve alcoholic drinks outdoors in designated spaces. the measure passed on unanimous consent. both bills now head to the assembly, where they must pass by august 31st at a special garden in the east bay. received a visit from the epa today. officials with the us environmental protection agency visited cal state east bay's concord center to assess the progress of a garden project that they helped fund. the epa awarded more than $900,000 to support work on a 6000 square foot garden near mount diablo. the garden is focused on

bringing back plants and food. indigenous to california. >> we're transitioning what is basically vacant lots into this food production area. habitat restoration. >> the epa is also conducting scientific studies in the garden area, looking at soil, water and also monitoring air pollution. the nonprofit aquarium of the bay, a fixture on san francisco's pier 39 now finding itself in financial trouble. ceo george jacob has resigned over allegations of unpaid bills, excessive personal spending and holding lavish overseas events to the tune of almost $750,000. now, the newly appointed board chairman says his top priority is the health and safety of the aquatic life. >> the sharks and the fish, and they deserve our very best. and this was not it. this is a charitable organization for the public good, and unfortunately, i don't think the previous,

officially have names. uc berkeley posting this photo to help us identify the chicks. so the one with the green band there is named aurora sole has the yellow band, nox has the blue band, and eclipse has the silver band. you remember last week when researchers made their way up to the top of the tower and put the special bands on each of the chicks? then the university asked the public to weigh in and help pick their names. in total, 3986 votes came
