out hope that their daughter's murder case will be solved tonight. the family of jenny lynn marking this painful anniversary. >> grief and sorrow will never go away. sooner or later, we're going to catch this guy. >> the search for justice in a decades long murder case. good evening everyone. i'm heather holmes, and i'm alex savage. >> tonight, the family of jenny lynn gathered for a memorial service. the 14 year old girl was murdered in her castro valley home nearly 30 years ago. new at ten ktvu is. amber lee joins us live tonight from castro valley. and amber investigators are not giving up on this case, and neither is her parents and community members. >> the ceremony was held here at the library, the castro valley

library. her parents now live in southern california, but they return here every year to make sure their daughter's case is not forgotten. in a musical tribute to honor the memory of jenny lynn of castro valley, the talented young musician's life cut short 30 years ago when she was only 14. her parents say the wheels of justice have moved agonizingly slow and time has not healed their pain. >> we've been living under the shadow of this horrible crime for 30 years. >> jenny was stabbed and killed inside her home on may 27th, 1994, two days after her birthday. her parents tell me jenny had gotten home from school and was alone. her father discovered her body. >> it still feels like it just happened yesterday. it's still so vivid, so fresh. >> each year, the lin's hold a candlelight walk after the celebration of life ceremony. they want to keep jenny's memory

alive and bring renewed attention to her unsolved murder. dna technology has solved many cold cases, and her parents hope it will help identify their daughter's killer and bring that person to justice . >> we need a closure. we need to give jenny, the promise that we gave her, which is to find a justice for her. >> jenny's case is our highest priority. alameda county sheriff yesenia sanchez came to support the family. sanchez tells me dna has been uploaded to see if genetic genealogy will be able to help solve this case. she says other advances are also being used to help find answers. >> our investigators are in touch with people who are developing new, new processes as far as forensically, so that is what is, you know, efforts that will be ongoing. >> jenny's parents say they will never give up hope for getting answers and justice for their daughter. >> sooner or later, we're going

to catch this guy. >> we're doing things that if jenny were here, she would have done it herself. so i think that's the strength that keeps us going. >> the parents started the jenny lynn foundation a few months after she was killed. it is offering a $200,000 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the person responsible, alex and amber. >> authorities years ago named a prime suspect in this killing. a man who later died in prison is he still a focus at all for investigators? >> well, i brought that up with the sheriff and she tells me that suspect has been ruled out completely. alex. >> all right. amber lee reporting live for us tonight. amber. thank you. a san jose man is under arrest tonight. accused of killing his own mother. he's identified as roger lee. police responded yesterday to a report

of a suspicious circumstance at lee's mother's home on shadow dance drive in san jose. they found the woman unconscious and not breathing. she was pronounced dead at the scene. the cause of death has not yet been released. police say lee was arrested at the home and will be charged with murder. the motive and circumstances surrounding this killing are still under investigation in oakland. >> police still looking for additional suspects after last night's shooting at skyline high school that left three people hurt. ktvu joey horta tells us a $15,000 reward is now being offered for information leading to an arrest. >> a rite of passage for teens turns violent. oakland police are investigating a shooting that happened shortly after the skyline high school graduation. police say shots were fired on campus around 745 thursday night as people were leaving the ceremony. police say two groups got into a fight in the school parking lot, resulting in multiple people being shot.

>> we heard the gunshots. >> zaidi yucel has lived right across the street from the school for close to 30 years and ran outside, and it reminded me as soon as i heard the shots, this recent shooting in uvalde, texas, oakland unified school district tells ktvu many families and students had already left the campus, but others, including staff members, were still on hand cleaning up. >> i was there because my brother was graduating and he's okay, but it's kind of crazy because skyline alum josh manly works at the church down the street, where a sign salutes the graduates. >> he left campus before the shooting, but his 16 year old brother was still there. they heard the shots, but they thought it was just more confetti cannons. >> but then people started screaming and they got out of there pretty quick. >> oakland unified superintendent doctor kyla johnson travel calls the shooting heartbreaking and absolutely unacceptable, while adding as a community, we must not tolerate violence and

instead work together to eliminate it. >> in oakland, having a gunshots and guns bringing into school, it is difficult to digest. it is concerning assembly member bonta tweeting my heart is with the students, families and skyline high school staff and educators. >> all three of the victims are expected to survive, and oakland police say they'll be on hand at future graduations in the newsroom. joey hornet, ktvu, fox two news a high school student in santa rosa has been arrested for allegedly pulling out a knife during a fight on campus. >> it happened at montgomery high school on wednesday, police say a video appears to show a 15 year old boy holding a folding knife during a fight with another student, but that that blade was not extended during the fight. that teen is now facing several charges, including felony assault with a deadly weapon. the knife was not found. >> new. at ten, two people have been charged in a case of retail

theft that totaled more than half $1 million, 33 year-old irene cruz and 21 year old jose cruz were both charged by the alameda county district attorney with organized retail theft and receiving over $541,000 worth of stolen property. the bus in oakland and sacramento county last year uncovered thousands of items including cosmetics, toiletries, medicine and cleaning supplies. investigators also seized cash and a loaded handgun inside a storage facility in oakland. is it over now? >> you know how stevie nicks taking the stage tonight at napa valley's bottlerock festival, the popular weekend long event kicked off today featuring legendary musicians and world class food and wine. >> ktvu bailey o'carroll joining us now live from napa from the festival and bailey, it seems as though the first night has been quite the success.

>> heather that is right. night one officially in the books here at bottlerock in napa. crowds starting to shuffle out. this is kind of the tail end. i want to move out of the way so you can take a look, about five or so minutes ago, right at the top of the ten when the 10:00 show started. this was wall to wall people. you couldn't move. that is why we kind of chose to stay back here, away from the crowd. the festival completely sold out for the rest of the weekend. it's one of the hottest tickets in town that is, if you can get one. we talked to folks young and old, as young as four weeks old, who came from all over to experience this festival and you start to which bottlerock is estimated to bring more than 100,000 people over the next few days to california's famed napa valley. >> we have colorado, houston, dallas, new york and aspen. >> remy and hennessy are in town for a girls trip celebrating their 30th birthdays. one of their favorite parts of the festival, the silent disco.

>> silent disco. >> right now, everyone's just having a great time and, like, screaming at the top of their lungs. they don't care. you can't hear anything. so it's really fun for the buyers. >> bottlerock hosts some of music's biggest names. this afternoon, saint vincent took the stage. ed sheeran, pearl jam and norah jones will also perform. but what everyone was most excited for tonight stevie nicks the musical acts appealed to a wide range of ages. >> i know i'm a very anxious mom right now. the wines helping amanda and david brought their four week old son to the festival, hoping he could make it through stevie nicks set in the womb. he would have listened to a lot of like, stevie nicks and all of that. so this is quite probably normal for him. but the festival, it's also home to world class food, though the lobster, tater tots seemed to be the crowd favorite, lobster tots , i think those were a standout. >> i'll give it a ten. if it's actual lobster, it brings vendors from near and far, like girard's paella demand this year through the roof. >> the demand is huge. we serve

about a pan of about every 20 minutes. we're just cranking nonstop right now. right now, logan just added the shrimp. so this is the final stages on this one. we'll let this cook for about another 20 minutes and this one's all done. and then it's going to get shoveled up to the well speaking of that world class food, the culinary stage here at bottlerock will be quite the place to be tomorrow. >> i checked out the lineup for that stage. neil patrick harris, stephen curry, bradley cooper and t-pain all scheduled to be at the culinary stage tomorrow. the headliner that is pearl jam and crowds again expected to be just as crazy as they were today. so if you are traveling in and around the napa area and not coming to bottlerock, you may want to avoid it. traffic is expected to be affected by these crowds reporting live in napa. i'm bailey o'carroll, ktvu, fox two news. >> yeah, as you mentioned, it's not just the music though. bailey and the food scene. that culinary stage is obviously a really big hit every year.

thanks so much. appreciate it. okay. you can expect to see a lot more law enforcement officers out on patrol this holiday weekend, giving you a live look now at a dui checkpoint. this is in san mateo in the area of south norfolk street and shore view avenue. this is expected to go until around 2 a.m. obviously, the chp really stepping up its maximum enforcement period as we head into this long holiday weekend that began earlier tonight. that stepped up. enforcement began around 6:00 tonight. it will last through early tuesday morning. officers will be out there looking for drunk or distracted drivers, speeding and other reckless behavior. bay area roads, meantime, were packed earlier today as a lot of people got a jump on their holiday weekend. here is what it looked like on interstate 80 through emeryville and berkeley late this afternoon. boy, you can see it was slow heading in both directions west into the city and east toward albany and el cerrito. >> all lanes are back open tonight on highway 101 in south san jose, following a deadly crash. it happened just before

noon today near blossom hill road. the chp says a wrong way driver was heading north in the southbound lanes and slammed right into that big rig. the driver inside the car died at the scene. the driver of the big rig was not injured. this crash caused about 100 gallons of fuel to spill onto the roadway and it triggered a huge traffic backup in the area. the southbound lanes of highway 101 did reopen around 845 tonight, and it was slow getting into san francisco all day long because of this big rig that caught fire on the bay bridge today, backing up traffic. it happened just before 10:00 this morning. the truck's trailer was seen burning in the westbound lanes of the bridge just east of treasure island. that trailer was filled with produce, according to authorities. thankfully, no one was hurt in that fire. the exact cause is still unclear tonight, but the san francisco fire department says the trailer's rear brakes may have overheated.

francisco's union square, finally celebrating a big win today. it's also being touted as a big win for video game enthusiasts. the city, about to become home to the country's second nintendo store. ktvu zac sos live for us now in the city with more on this big announcement. zack >> yeah, and nintendo saying it plans to open that store right here in union square sometime next year. now, right now, there are just four of these stores in the whole world. three of them are in japan. so you can imagine the excitement of nintendo fans when they found out that one of those stores would be coming right here to san francisco. >> i'm just from alameda to

emeryville. oh, wow. >> i think it's awesome. it's amazing. >> all across the bay area, fans of mario and luigi rejoicing. i think it's exciting that we're getting a nintendo store slated to open in san francisco's union square sometime in 2025. the japan based video game giant announced friday. >> i'm really excited for the new store. i'll definitely be going there hopefully day one. >> right now, the only nintendo store in the country is located in new york city. 10,000ft!s of accessories, apparel, and of course, games. >> and people travel to go out there to, you know, visit that store from like everywhere. so to have that out here and it be so close is actually pretty cool. >> a fan since he was a kid, jose pineda, browsing through some of the nintendo nostalgia at experience share in alameda. >> my dad got me a super nintendo when i was like, probably like 2 or 3 years old. >> hoping the new shop also offers a boost to union square, which has seen an exodus of stores from the neighborhood over the last few years.

>> people could go out, have a day in san francisco instead of going, you know, to the same old places like the wharf, you know, the beaches. they could go play video games somewhere. you talk about video games or just enjoy nintendo in general. >> that's the hope. according to the union square alliance, which lauded the news in a statement, saying in part, quote, nintendo's decision to launch its second u.s. store in san francisco's iconic union square is a powerful testament to the district's resurgence and strategic significance. so what exactly makes a nintendo store so special? >> they have a lot of exclusive merch there, so you can buy like hoodies, hats, t shirts for a lot of franchises that you don't see. so there's some more obscure ones like arms or metroid that you don't see a lot of merch for. there's, of course, like the exclusive mario's. there's a plushies, and the list goes on enough to get mayor london breed excited to calling the announcement, quote, great news for union square and fans from everywhere. >> fans like nasir. >> i feel good.

chairman says this loss is among the reasons why the board asked aquarium president and ceo george jacob to resign on wednesday. the aquarium will remain open and has until june 13th to appeal this decision. >> well, a big time cool down today here in the bay area. lots of low clouds and that cool breeze already sticking around all day and already increasing this evening. so take a look at the highs from this afternoon. we're just showing you some 50s out towards san francisco in oakland, fremont, 60 degrees and a few spots still in the 70s out towards santa rosa and antioch. as you take a look at these numbers, tomorrow will be about the same, but we will gradually warm up those numbers beginning sunday and into monday for memorial day. so lots of cloud cover expected tomorrow morning, and the winds do pick up around 20 to 25 miles an hour. and then on monday, fair skies. the warming trend will continue. heat is not a part of our forecast at all, but temperatures do recover a bit for sunday and into monday. here's the system we're watching on the satellite for tonight. you can see some high clouds

process right now in california that crime is a misdemeanor. >> as reporter ashley zavala shows us, some state senators insisted on changes to the measure that would exclude 16 and 17 year olds from the definition of a child. >> still kids, they're not adults. >> assembly kevin mccarthy signaling he also has issues with changes made to sb 1414. the bill attempts to ramp up consequences for customers of the child sex trafficking industry. mccarthy leads the committee that will hear the bill next. he represents sacramento and its stretch of stockton boulevard, where child sex trafficking is rampant. >> we passed some laws the last couple of years that sometimes i think that maybe we didn't make the right call, and i think it's gotten worse in areas like stockton boulevard, in recent times. and, you know, i do support some of these efforts to

bring more tools to go after this issue. >> the state senate's public safety committee forced changes into the bill earlier this year to not consider 16 and 17 year olds as children. the committee also changed the proposal to allow those who purchase children 15 and under to be considered wobbler's, meaning prosecutors would have the option to charge them with either a misdemeanor or felony on the first offense. the bill also does not include prison time for the crime at all, but instead a maximum of one year in a county jail. on the senate floor thursday night, senator nancy skinner defended the changes. >> you know, laws are funny things and they are, this bill affect. it's a verbal exchange. that is what solicitation is. it affects a verbal exchange. and so the amendments that were made were trying to make appropriate. >> other democrats suggested this issue overall is a liability for the party, but

they shouldn't have to live a life determined by what happens to them by others at a very young age, and by having the democratic party of california say it's okay. republican state senator shannon grove wrote the original proposal to make the crime a felony. with prison time, we're hopeful that we'll be able to accomplish some of that in the assembly. >> and that was ashley zavala reporting a hearing has not yet been scheduled for the bill. >> there's a lot of interest when it comes to senate bill 1414, especially among advocates who help sex trafficking survivors. the nonprofit three strands global recently opened a center in sacramento. they provide relief for sex trafficking victims. the group is a sponsor of senate bill 1414, the ceo of the organization, ashley bryant, says on average, 7 to 10 victims drop into that center every day, and most of them are still in their teens. >> 16 and 17 year olds are the ones that is the highest exponential rise over the last

few years in in who we serve. so that even more important for us to include them in this legislation. >> bryant also says her staff sees the trauma caused by trafficking every day, and they're hoping the bill will be restored to cover all minors. >> frustration in the south bay coming up tonight, community leaders demand the state take action following the closure of a trauma center and heart clinic at a san jose hospital. plus more controversy for autonomous vehicle company waymo. the troubling incidents unveiled today by federal investigators. >> also coming up tonight, the giants not only pulled off another comeback, but they had a fantastic finish as well. jesse gary has the highlights in sports coming up later in this show. also we are one step closer to having a high speed rail line between los angeles and san francisco. today's

plans suggest that despite proposed spending cuts, the state is still facing a multi-billion dollar deficit. this year. the governor's revised budget plan includes cuts in services to about 260 state programs, and an 8% reduction in the state's workforce by eliminating unfilled job posts. the nonpartisan legislative analyst's office says that still leaves california with a $7 billion shortfall. the analyst's office recommends the state dip into its rainy day fund to try to make up that difference. >> community leaders are calling on attorney general rob bonta to investigate what they called discriminatory closures at regional medical center. they say the privately owned hospital in east san jose plans to shut down the trauma center and heart attack clinic. it's also looking

to downgrade its stroke center. the trauma center serves more than 2400 patients a year. the stroke center serves 65% of patients in the county without insurance. >> if you look at all the studies, when any major trauma center is closed, the mortality mortality in the population increases by 29% in the next two years. so i think it is a big, big step backwards. >> the trauma center is set to close on august 12th. the hospital says it's because not enough people are using it. community leaders, though, say the closure will affect people of color and underserved communities the hardest. in a statement, a spokesperson said the hospital is focusing on emergency services with a $10 million investment to increase capacity from 43 to 63 beds. he added, quote, patient demand for our emergency department services continues to grow as we average nearly 225 patients daily. it is critical that we

invest in our emergency department to meet today's high demand and prepare for anticipated increases. today marks the first day that arizona doctors can apply for a temporary medical license to provide abortion services to here in california. the bill was signed into law just yesterday by governor newsom. ktvu jana katsuyama has reaction now from the bill's supporters and critics. >> state senator nancy skinner of oakland led the charge to get sb 233 signed into law this week. that law now allows arizona doctors to come to california and provide abortion care here. >> california had to offer a lifeline to our sisters in arizona and to doctors, so that doctors could immediately. arizona doctors could immediately get a california medical license. >> skinner heads the women's legislative caucus and says the bill is urgently needed because of an old law the arizona courts had resurrected. >> and this law would have basically threatened any doctor

or any abortion provider with a prison sentence. >> although the arizona legislature has since repealed that law, skinner says arizona doctors and their patients are still in danger for the way their legislative session works. >> that law, their repeal, does not go into effect until late in the fall. >> members of pro-life san francisco say they oppose the new california law. >> the legislature should be working to put them in contact with these families, rather than offering abortion as a solution. it is at best, just a band-aid to a problem that exists in our community and at worst, a violent solution. >> the law requires arizona doctors to send an application to the california medical board or osteopathic medical board for approval. >> that doctor has to be in good standing, have their medical license, their arizona license in good standing, and has to have performed an abortion. so has to have that capability. >> skinner says the law allows

arizona doctors to get the temporary medical licenses through november 30th in san francisco, jana katsuyama ktvu fox two news. >> new at ten a federal investigation into waymo robots taxis has found some more troubling issues. the national highway traffic safety administration said today. it's learned of nine more cases involving waymo self-driving cars. in some of those cases, the agency says the vehicles were involved in crashes with clearly visible objects that a driver would be expected to avoid. earlier this month, the agency opened an investigation into the mountain view based company after 22 reports of its robo taxis potentially violating traffic safety laws, including 17 crashes. >> the california high speed rail project completed an environmental review for a key portion of the ultimate route from los angeles to san francisco. the high speed rail authority released the environmental review for a 38

mile stretch through the san gabriel mountains in southern california. if the authority's board of directors approves it next month, will the entire route from san francisco to los angeles would be cleared to begin construction? other obstacles remain in getting the project completed, though, including securing the estimated $135 billion in funding. coming up tonight at 11, a vote to unionize hundreds of california health care workers joining a nationwide trend. >> and in barry, weather clouds moving in right now, even some drizzle. the weekend starts off on a cooler note, but there will be a nice recovery over the next few days. we'll have the forecast update coming up. >> but first, two years later and the families who lost children in the uvalde school shooting now taking legal action. the lawsuits that

ensure access for any fact finding or investigative mission . the un has been tasked to investigate claims from south africa of genocide within israel. the un court also ordered israel to open the rafah crossing between egypt and gaza to allow in humanitarian aid. israel has rejected the claims by south africa, a nation with historic ties to the palestinian people. the israel defense forces continue to sweep through gaza today as the army recovered the bodies of three more israeli hostages. an estimated 125 hostages are still believed to be held in gaza. their conditions unknown. also today, the united nations highest legal body ordered israel to stop its attacks on the city of rafah. but the country's prime minister said, not changing plans. >> the genocide convention israel must immediately halt its military offensive.

>> rafah is the were four of the 24 terrorist battalions of the hamas terrorist army are there. we can't leave them there anymore. that the allies could leave 20% of the army intact in germany. >> a republican house speaker, mike johnson, announced that prime minister benjamin netanyahu would soon addressed a joint session of congress. no date has been set yet. dozens of democrats, though, boycotted netanyahu's last address, raising the prospect that some may boycott again. >> an 18 year old is in custody tonight for allegedly attacking a protester at ucla as pro-palestinian encampment last month. eden aune was identified as the counter-protester wearing the white hoodie and the mask. in this video. it shows him repeatedly hitting a pro-palestinian protester with a pole. ucla police say, and was arrested yesterday in beverly hills and booked on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon, which is a felony on is not a ucla student, but actually a
