if you're on the roads. the chp's message to anyone who's getting behind the wheel this memorial day weekend and more than 120,000 people expected to be in napa this weekend for the bottlerock music festival. a live report with how that festival is impacting nearby businesses.

change again tomorrow. so if you're heading to bottle rock and boy what is it? over 100,000 people are expected to do so this weekend. you can bank on clearing skies. and as you look at these, temperatures, might look kind of coolish, but it's actually perfect. so says tom vacar, who was out there yesterday. did you guys know steph curry is going to be there with bradley cooper tomorrow? no performing. really? yes. storm tracker you can't see the condensation, but there is drizzle all associated with this. take a look very carefully here. look to the north out towards eureka and watch. here it comes right there diving through the bay area. that is what is squeezing out a little bit of condensation this morning. enhancing that marine layer. can't even see the tip top of the golden gate bridge. standing 746ft. which leads me to believe visibility is less than two miles in half moon bay and throughout most of the coast side, seven miles to the north in santa rosa. work. now it is 50 after dropping into the mid 40s and petaluma and in cotati

were now at 49. in napa, 54 tri-valley and across the bay in belmont and burlingame. later today. yes these temperatures are unseasonably cool by at least a good 1012 degrees 50 beaches, barely climbing to the low 70s in our inland areas. it does get warmer for your sunday, revealing ample sunshine on through memorial day with seasonal conditions. we have that full weekend forecast minutes away, but right now let's say good morning to claudine. all right. >> thanks, roberta. well, expect a busy day in the north bay today as day two of napa valley's bottlerock festival gets underway. today, pearl jam will take the stage. last night's headliners included megan thee stallion and stevie nicks. disciple was quick to sing the songs get back, the fleetwood mac singer and former san jose state university student, performed before that sold out crowd as the closing act of day one. an estimated

100,000 people a day are expected to attend bottlerock. this memorial day weekend. many music lovers attending the festival this year are bringing their children for us. >> it's always felt like a family affair and i know it's gotten to be more, more so, but for us it's just kind of it's something that we do every year to start to start the summer. >> this represents napa valley perfectly. there's people all around the world that are here, and bottlerock is second to none. we call it mom. coachella music superstars at sheeran and norah jones will also be performing at bottlerock this weekend. >> now, the annual memorial day weekend concert did again kick off last night, and it can be busy for businesses there. let's go to ktvu betty yu live for us in downtown napa, where local businesses are seeing that boost. good morning betty. >> good morning claudine. that's right. many businesses here in downtown napa are already open, and they tell me that they are ready for the big crowds this weekend. as you said, 40,000 people are expected yet again

for bottlerock. and we know people come from near and far for this festival. one of the local businesses that will benefit this weekend is right behind me here. the napa river in its conveniently located within walking distance of the festival here in downtown napa. they tell me they're completely sold out this weekend. and in fact, an employee says that guests typically book one year out because these rooms go so fast. and this weekend. now here's a look at last night's festivities. musicians from all genres perform on multiple stages all weekend long. of course, the food and wine are big draws as well. for bottlerock vendors come from near and far to sell world class food. now, we asked some folks yesterday what was their favorite lobster tots. >> i think those are a standout. >> i'll give it a ten if it's actual lobster. >> i can't see it. >> so one of those businesses that will also benefit this weekend is sweetie pie's bakery,

and that's located just right next to the napa river inn. they tell me that they've brought in extra staff members to handle the crowds. this weekend, and a supervisor told me that this is the biggest weekend after thanksgiving for them, so they look forward to this all year long. and again, claudine, tonight's big headliner, pearl jam. we know a lot of fans will be ready for that. rock band. >> yeah, i bet, so i'll take it away. thank you very much. betty, you up in napa? there are a lot of events. this memorial day weekend. we got you covered here at ktvu with a list of things to do around the bay area. check it out@ktvu.com, or our app to plan out your big holiday weekend. a mechanical problem at the mare island causeway bridge in vallejo will keep it from opening and closing a boat traffic for the next week. city leaders say those traveling to bottle rock via boat should use the san francisco bay ferry and the connector vine transit bus. both

are located at the vallejo ferry terminal. vine transit services are free for those attending this weekend's big music festival up in wine country. >> oakland police are now offering a $15,000 reward for information leading to more arrests in the shooting on the skyline high school campus. this all happened on thursday night, shortly after the school's graduation ceremony. police say one suspect is already in custody in connection with the shooting that wounded three adults. one man was among a large group of people leaving the graduation ceremony when they heard the sound of gunfire, heard the shots, but they thought it was just more confetti cannons. >> but then people started screaming and they got out of there pretty quick. >> all three shooting victims are expected to survive. police say the gunfire followed a fight between two groups of people in the skyline high parking lot. >> two people have been charged in a case of retail theft that totaled more than a half $1 million. 33 year old irene cruz, 21 year old jose cruz were both

charged by the alameda county da with organized retail theft and receiving over $541,000 in stolen property. the bus in oakland and sacramento county last year uncovered thousands of items including cosmetics, toiletries, medicine and cleaning supplies. investigators also seized cash and a loaded handgun in a storage facility in oakland. >> well, the california highway patrol is out in full force this holiday weekend looking for any reckless behavior. the statewide maximum enforcement period started last night. it's going to run through midnight on tuesday. more officers will be on patrol to address the expected surge in holiday travelers, and they'll be targeting drivers that are speeding, distracted or under the influence of drugs or alcohol. last memorial day weekend, the chp made more than 1100 dui arrests. >> well, unfortunately, there's still people out there that do decide to get behind a motor vehicle under the influence of alcohol or drugs. we definitely

encourage them to obviously be a sober driver for somebody, if you have been drinking, take advantage of those rideshare services, a taxi, public transportation, or if you have to just walk, but absolutely, we're going to be definitely, probably seeing, dui drivers out there on the road and hopefully being able to take them off. >> the chp says having more officers on the road will allow them to respond to issues more quickly, and hopefully save lives. >> lanes are finally back open on highway 101 in south san jose, following a deadly crash. this happened just before noontime friday near blossom hill road. chp says a wrong way driver was heading northbound in the southbound lanes and slammed into a big rig. driver in the car died at the scene. the big rig driver was not injured. the crash caused about 100 gallons of fuel to spill out onto the road and triggered a huge, huge traffic backup southbound lanes of highway 101 reopened around 845 last night, and it was a

slow going getting into san francisco friday because of a big rig up fire on the bay bridge, backing up traffic for miles. the truck's trailer was seen burning in the westbound lanes of the bridge just east of treasure island. the trailer was filled with produce. thankfully, nobody injured there. the exact cause of the fire is unknown, but s.f. fire department says the trailer's rear brakes may have been overheated and invasive. >> mosquito is causing some concerns in santa clara county. >> yes, and those bugs were first discovered earlier this year, but efforts to eradicate them so far have been unsuccessful. ktvu mark sayer has more from vector control, who is drawing up a new plan to fight the species. >> so then we'll go ahead and take her and put her in an ice box. >> taylor kelly with santa clara county vector control is checking mosquito traps which have been set in this quiet residential neighborhood in the east san jose foothills, connected. nobody knows how

these mosquitoes arrived here, but the fact that they are taking hold in a residential neighborhood is of particular concern. >> as of april, our surveillance team has found 12 mosquitoes, which poses a significant public risk to our community. >> the mosquitoes in question are called aedes aegypti, and while they are not native to california, they do exist in some counties in central and southern california. but the concern is that they can transmit diseases which are harmful to humans. >> the mosquito is known to transmit diseases like zika, yellow fever, chikungunya and dengue. >> doctor monica roy, with santa clara county public health, says the health risk right now is low. but stopping the mosquitoes now is important. >> if the mosquito were to become established, this would pose a risk to everyone in our community, but would be particularly concerning for our pregnant people, elderly family members and those with compromised immune systems at any given time, there are between 30 and 45 traps like

this one. >> in this neighborhood. every day staff members come here, take the contents out and take them to the lab for analysis, and then they move them to different locations to try to capture the widest sample possible. >> the mosquito i heard will kill people. >> vector control says residents in this area have been cooperative with allowing inspections for standing water, such as puddles, dog bowls, and bird feeders. shu tang lives across the street from some of the traps, so anything they do, including spraying to kill these mosquitoes. okay with you? >> yes, of course i'm happy. okay. i'm glad they do it. the vector control district will hold a community meeting at the alum rock library at 6:00 next tuesday, with spraying set to begin on wednesday morning. >> reporting in san jose. i'm mark sayer, ktvu, fox two news. >> she is toast. we say tao is toast. tao is definitely toast. >> critics of oakland mayor shengtao say they have enough

will have enough signatures to put the recall on the upcoming november ballot. the group called oakland united to recall shengtao says they have collected more than 30,000 signatures, surpassing the required 25,000, and they say they will collect over 40,000 signatures. and then they will submit them for verification. they argue that the mayor has failed to get a handle on crime in the city, and they believe they will be successful. >> with respect to the 40,000 that sends the message that we already have more people signing to recall you than who voted for you to get elected in the first place. >> we have reached out to the mayor's office for comment, but have not heard back. an heir to the levi strauss fortune who is also a candidate in the race for san francisco's mayor, says he will fund his own campaign. daniel lurie says his decision to use his own money and decline public financing will save san francisco taxpayers $1.2

million. that's the money he would have received from the city's public financing program for political campaigns. larry's announcement comes amid what is expected to be the most expensive race for mayor in the city's history. >> well, video gamers across the bay area are celebrating plans for a new store in san francisco. nintendo is launching its second u.s. store in union square. the japanese based video game giant hasn't released details on that store, but says it is expected to open next year. right now, the only other nintendo store in the country is located in new york city, and that two story building is filled with nintendo games, merchandise, and all of the consoles. union square has a space for a similar layout. >> they have a lot of exclusive merch. there so you can buy like hoodies, hats, t shirts for a lot of franchises that you don't see. so there's some more obscure ones like arms or metroid that you don't see a lot of merch for. there's, of course like the exclusive mario's. there's a plushies people travel to go out there to, you know,

visit that store from like everywhere. >> so to have that out here and it be so close is actually pretty cool. >> officials say nintendo's decision to launch its second u.s. store in san francisco shows the strategic significance of doing business in the bay area, south lake tahoe bracing for a very busy holiday weekend, city officials are asking visitors to be respectful of the area. >> certainly pick up your trash. in addition, boat owners must follow inspection orders before entering the lake. the mayor of south lake tahoe says that will help keep invasive species out of lake tahoe. the mayor is also urging visitors to take all the precautions when entering the water. he says it's colder than it appears, especially in some of the deeper areas. >> all right. we want to know about your plans for memorial day weekend. and so it is our question of the day. we've got three options for you to choose from. and we're asking these questions one, do you want to head out of town? two do you

seeing it due to that right there. the thickening of the marine layer, it's now down. it's surpassing the tip top of the tower, the golden gate bridge that stands 746ft tall. so it gives you a good idea that there is some drizzle associated with that thickening up at the marine layer. temperatures are now pretty much out of the 40s, except for napa at 49 degrees. the difference today we're actually more mild than yesterday at this time, but the wind has been blowing. and when that wind does increase westerly 10 to 20 gusts up to 35mph, that's when it feels raw. that's when there's a chill in the air. so you need to dress in layers today again, not picking up any precipitation. according to our storm tracker live radar. but we do see the enhancement of the marine layer along the coast and into our inland area. so when does it clear by 2:00 this afternoon. look at that. we will have more ample sunshine today in comparison to yesterday and tomorrow morning. additional sunshine which will allow our temperatures to warm up to near seasonal levels. so today we're forecasting mid 50s at the

beaches 60s around the bay and peninsula. only a pair of sixes and pleasanton livermore, san ramon and in dublin outside number will be santa rosa at 73 degrees. coastal areas stay cloudy and cozy in the 50s. otherwise more seasonal sunday and then a perfect day on monday for your memorial day. claudine and frank. >> all right. thank you roberta. happening today. carnival in san francisco is back for its 46th annual celebration. it is a free two day festival that covers 17 blocks in the mission district. there will be international food, music and entertainment. that event will run from 10 a.m. until six today and tomorrow. the grand parade will showcase latin culture from a variety of countries such as mexico, brazil and jamaica. >> busy weekend coming up next. pier 39. aquarium of the bay. losing accreditation. the concerns mounting over finances and staff morale there. whe we

and stripped of a key accreditation. the association of zoos and aquariums announced that it's rescinding the accreditation, citing concerns about the aquarium's financial stability, its staffing capabilities and employee morale. overall and turnover. aquarium's chairman says this loss is among the reasons why

was coming. the unofficial start to summer this weekend. everyone's like, oh yes, summer is here. and then yesterday hit and even warned. i think when you have a double digit drop it. it still is a little shock to the system. >> yeah, and you could blame it on that right there. do you see it. >> that the fog. >> yeah. it is the fog and the fog to our may gray. and therefore we will transition into june gloom. and because of that thick marine layer, we fired up our doppler radar, our storm tracker, not picking up any condensation, but it's there . now take a look at our storm tracker. now see that right there? right now, heading towards the bay area. that is the trough that enhanced the marine layer and left us with the drizzle this morning. but looking out at the greater lake tahoe area, we will have that forecast for you coming up. but boy doug michaelson thank you. he's in our engineer department. i really am grateful for you sharing that with us. a lot of people heading up to tahoe visibility an issue due to the marine layer this morning. one

mile half moon bay, seven miles and the santa rosa area 50 were earlier this morning. it dropped to the mid and high 40s in cotati and sebastopol and guerneville. 54 currently in livermore and the winds are breezy. yes, again. and they will remain with us today, kicking up out of the west 10 to 20mph at times right now. a gust at oakland at 21mph right now, belmont, burlingame, san mateo, your winds are blowing up to 14. these winds will gust up to 25 and 35. late day. and that does add to the daytime chill. pinpoint your neighborhood 56. that's as good as it gets today in pacifica with layers of clouds. we will have some partial clearing in san francisco, but only 60. but keep in mind the average high 64 for this time of the year should be flirting with 80 inland, but instead 70 antioch and fairfield, 73, in santa rosa. so the bottom line is morning cloudiness, breezy conditions. we will turn sunny today. more clearing than yesterday. it's

out, but we did check you can still go on its website and request to buy or sell tickets. if you're still looking this morning. but again, all of this means big business for downtown napa. take a look behind me. the napa river inn is one of its big beneficiaries. i spoke to the hotel this morning. they tell me they are completely sold out. in fact, these rooms were reserved a year in advance. now, a look at last night's festivities. as you said, stevie nicks took the stage among other icons. now musicians all weekend long from different genres perform on different stages. of course, the big attractions this weekend are also the food and the wine vendors come from all across the bay area and beyond to sell some of their most popular eats. sweet sweetie pies rather bakery, which is located next to the napa river inn, also has a booth located inside this festival, so they have two big

>> the statewide maximum enforcement period started last night. it's going to run through midnight on tuesday. you're taking a look at the golden gate bridge this morning, where you can see that that fog we're talking about hanging over there. so be safe. if you're on the roads this morning, keep in mind more officers will be out on patrol addressing the expected surge in holiday travelers travelers. and they will be targeting drivers that are speeding or distracted or under the influence of drugs or alcohol. last memorial day weekend, the chp made more than 1100 dui arrests and barry roads were packed friday as people got a jump on the holiday weekend. >> here's what it looked like on interstate 80 through emeryville. berkeley late friday afternoon and friday's are never good there, especially on a holiday. you can see it was slow heading both directions west into the city and eastbound towards albany and el cerrito, and millions of americans will be paying more at the pump this year. but for hitting the road over the holiday weekend and the

summer, according to triple a, the national average for a gallon of gasoline is about $3.60. we would love that. a lot more expensive here in california as we know where. it's about $5 a gallon. the biden administration says it's working on a plan to lower gas prices between memorial day and the 4th of july. 1 million barrels of gasoline will be sold from supply reserves. critics, however, say there's a better solution for all these high prices. >> we estimate that about 400,000 more barrels a day are going to be used because of the summer driving season. we need more production, more production of oil and gas and gasoline in the united states. >> we will make energy affordable again by saying drill, baby, drill, drill, baby, drill. >> a recent poll shows nearly half of americans say gas prices are a major problem with families. >> your memorial day cookout

might be more expensive than normal this year. families can expect to pay about 10% more for barbecue items, such as ground beef, hot dogs, buns, and popular condiments, according to real time product company data assembly. the price of burgers is up nearly 15% and families will pay about $30 more on average for all those other cookout items like chips and salads. however other items like buns, ketchup, mustard those are only up by a few cents. >> small price. all right, memorial day weekend. cal fire wants to remind everyone of the hidden risks if you're heading towards rivers when you look at the surface of the river, you don't really see all the hazards under the water. >> there could be man made and natural features that can entrap you, injure you, you can get hung up on. so it's very deceptive that it is. >> cal fire advises to wear a personal flotation device, watch for hazards and consider pro guidance for rafting rough water, a vacant lot in san francisco's south of market

neighborhood is becoming more than just an eyesore. >> what started as an empty plot of land is now a small lake filled with trash. ktvu zac sos has more on concern from neighbors. >> it started out as small little ponds and it turned into a great big pond. >> no, does not smell very good. >> neighbors eyeing a vacant lot at shipley and fifth in san francisco's soma district, transforming over the last few weeks into a putrid, trash filled urban lake of sorts. >> i'd say it's been about six weeks now, and it's gradually been rising at first it started as like kind of a very shallow pond, and it's just been growing ever since. >> the question on everyone's mind where's the water coming from? >> at first, maybe i thought it was coming from the c, a building permit at the site is registered to three 65th llc, the san francisco business times reporting that in 2017, the city approved plans for a 127 unit residential building here, but the construction stalled after the site's developer failed to

make monthly loan payments on the property. >> the site's future now in limbo. >> they had the pump over there running, and it's been shut down. >> the san francisco public utilities commission says it sent a crew out thursday to collect water samples at the site, but that they were unable to gain access due to the fence. right now, they think the source of the flooding is likely. groundwater maps of the area from the 19 century indicate a marsh at the site. >> our building is going to start sinking, i don't really know, and with the warmer summer months approaching, neighbors also worried once it starts warming up, it's going a big, big, big mosquito mess and, you know, god knows what other airborne diseases that can carry. hopefully the city or somebody will come in and put something in there. >> a violation posted monday from the city's public works department appears to be tied to a container on the sidewalk. as for the standing water, the city's department of building inspection says it's looking into the situation. >> the message the city is find out who's responsible and hold

that they have been preparing for this event a month in advance, and they've also brought in extra staff members this weekend to handle all of the crowds. some 40,000 people are expected today alone. of course, they come for the music, the food and the wine. and all of this means big business for the local economy. take a look. one of the most popular spots right behind me, the napa river inn. now they tell me that rooms have been booked far in advance. some folks booked the rooms ahead of next year's festival, so they have been up and at it, as well as sweetie pie's bakery right next door. but first, a look at last night's festivities. 100,000 people, as you mentioned, expected all weekend long, 75 musical acts from all different genres will perform on multiple stages. this weekend. there are big name acts, but of course a great food and wine lineup including a culinary stage. now, sweetie pie bakery says that it has a booth

people started screaming and they got out of there pretty quick. >> all three shooting victims are expected to survive. police say the gunfire followed a fight between two groups of people in the skyline high school parking lot. >> two people have been charged in a case of retail theft that totaled more than a half a million bucks. 33 year old irene cruz, 21 year old jose cruz were both charged by the alameda county da with the organized retail theft and receiving over $541,000 in stolen property. the bust in oakland and sacramento county last year uncovered thousands of items including cosmetics, toiletries, medicine and cleaning supplies. investigators also seized cash and a loaded gun in a storage facility in oakland. >> well, the california highway patrol is out in full force this holiday weekend looking for any reckless behavior. the statewide maximum enforcement period started last night, and it's going to run through midnight on tuesday. more officers will be on patrol to address the expected surge in holiday

travelers, and they're going to be targeting drivers that are speeding, distracted or under the influence of drugs or alcohol. last memorial day weekend, the chp made more than 100 dui arrests. >> all lanes finally back open highway 101 in south san jose following a deadly crash. all this happened just before noontime friday near blossom hill road. the chp says a wrong-way driver was headed north in the southbound lanes and slammed right into that big rig. the driver of the car died at the scene. the big rig driver was not injured. the crash caused about 100 gallons of fuel to spill onto the road, triggered a monster traffic backup. southbound lanes. highway 101 reopened around 845 last night, and a slow go to get over the bay bridge into san francisco friday because of a big rig that caught fire on the bay bridge, backing up traffic for miles, the truck's trailer was seen burning in the westbound lanes of the bridge a little east of treasure island, but not far. the trailer was

which poses a significant public risk to our community. >> the mosquitoes in question are called aedes aegypti, and while they are not native to california, they do exist in some counties in central and southern california. but the concern is that they can transmit diseases which are harmful to humans. >> the mosquito is known to transmit diseases like zika, yellow fever, chikungunya and dengue. >> doctor monica roy, with santa clara county public health, says the health risk right now is low, but stopping the mosquitoes now is important. >> if the mosquito were to become established, this would pose a risk to everyone in our community, but would be particularly concerning for our pregnant people, elderly family members and those with compromised immune systems at any given time, there are between 30 and 45 traps like this one. >> in this neighborhood. every day staff members come here. take the contents out and take them to the lab for analysis, and then they move them to different locations to try to

popular spot. this weekend i spoke to the hotel this morning and they tell me that they have been sold out for quite some time because guests booked these rooms a year in advance. a look at last night's festivities icon stevie nicks wowed the crowd, and in all, 75 musicians from all genres will perform on multiple stages all weekend long. there is also a world class food and wine lineup, as well as a culinary stage featuring celebrity and chef performances. sweetie pie's bakery, located right next to napa river inn, said that they've been preparing for bottlerock one month in advance, figuring out pricing and food items that they'll serve this weekend. the owner said that she's been prepping pie shells for the last two weeks. >> this weekend, we have a booth at the show and we have here, and so we get a little double

a year in advance. now, a look at last night's big festivities. as you said, stevie nicks wowed the crowd. now, in all, 75 musicians from all different genres, including rock, hip hop and r&b, they will perform on multiple stages all weekend long . festival goers are also here for that world class gourmet food and wine lineup. now, one of the main attractions is the culinary stage this weekend, which features all star celebrity and chef performances. sweetie pie's bakery, located right next to napa river inn, said that they've been involved in bottlerock since the very beginning. they've been preparing for this event one month in advance, and the owner said she's been prepping pie shells for the last two weeks. >> it is beyond what we could have hoped for when this started. i've been doing this 11 years, since the since the first year. so the way that they've set it up, it's so it's so easy

they're looking for anyone who is driving recklessly. the statewide maximum enforcement period started last night, and it's going to run through midnight on tuesday. more officers will be on patrol to address the expected surge in holiday travelers, and they're going to be targeting drivers that are speeding, distracted or under the influence of drugs or alcohol. last memorial day weekend, the chp made more than 1100 dui arrests. well unfortunately, there's still people out there that do decide to get behind a motor vehicle under the influence of alcohol or drugs. >> we definitely encourage them to obviously be a sober driver for somebody, if you have been drinking, take advantage of those rideshare services, a taxi, public transportation, or if you have to just walk, but absolutely, we're going to be definitely, probably seeing, dui drivers out there on the road and hopefully being able to take them off. >> the chp says having more officers on the road is going to allow them to respond to issues more quickly and hopefully save

lives. >> 907 your time oakland police are now offering a $15,000 reward for information leading to more arrests in the shooting on skyline high school's campus in oakland. this all happened thursday night, shortly after the school's graduation ceremony. police say one suspect is already in custody in connection with the shooting that wounded three adults. one man was among a large group of people leaving the graduation ceremony when they heard the sound of gunfire, heard the shots, but they thought it was just more confetti cannons. >> but then people started screaming and they got out of there pretty quick. >> all three shooting victims are expected to survive. police say the gunfire followed a fight between two groups of people in the skyline high school parking lot. >> a middle school student from walnut creek is being investigated by police for making a kill list, the east bay times reports that the child is a student at foothill middle school, and police say school officials learned of a possible kill list with at least four students names on it.

high temperature of 60 slightly below average, rebounding to a beautiful day on sunday. and on monday. back at home. back at the ranch, temperatures pretty uniform in the 50s across the board, except for san jose now striking out at 61 degrees but still overcast skies due to that deep marine layer this morning. breezy conditions just about everywhere along the peninsula. pretty consistent are the winds 13 to 15mph from atherton into woodside. also east palo alto and palo alto. ten mile per hour winds in mountain view. but bottom line is the wind does usher the pollen around. and it's been a horrific allergy season for majority of us. blame it on the tree count. and also the grass count comes into play. oh see that right there? i'm going to play it one more time over for you because this is so impressive. this is our satellite imagery. this is the trough that just nosedived through the bay area. and the overnight hours bringing down its cooler air mass as well. in fact, yesterday we saw that big

unsuccessful. ktvu mark sayer has more now from vector control, who has drawn up a brand new plan to fight the species. >> so then we'll go ahead and take her, and put her in an ice box. >> taylor. kelly with santa clara county vector control, is checking mosquito traps, which have been set in this quiet residential neighborhood in the east san jose foothills. connected. nobody knows how these mosquitoes arrived here, but the fact that they are taking hold in a residential neighborhood is of particular concern. as of april, our surveillance team has found 12 mosquitoes, which poses a significant public risk to our community. the mosquitoes in question are called aedes aegypti, and while they are not native to california, they do exist in some counties in central and southern california. but the concern is that they can transmit diseases which are harmful to humans. >> the mosquito is known to transmit diseases like zika, yellow fever, chikungunya and dengue. >> doctor monica roy, with santa

clara county public health, says the health risk right now is low, but stopping the mosquitoes now is important. >> if the mosquito were to become established, this would pose a risk to everyone in our community, but would be particularly concerning for our pregnant people, elderly family members and those with compromised immune systems at any given time, there are between 30 and 45 traps like this one. >> in this neighborhood. every day staff members come here, take the contents out and take them to the lab for analysis, and then they move them to different locations to try to capture the widest sample possible. >> so the mosquito i heard will kill people. >> vector control says residents in this area have been cooperative with allowing inspections for standing water, such as puddles, dog bowls, and bird feeders. shu tang lives across the street from some of the traps, so anything they do, including spraying to kill these mosquitoes. okay with you? yes of course i'm happy. >> okay. i'm glad they do it. >> the vector control district

will hold a community meeting at the alum rock library at 6:00 next tuesday, with spraying set to begin on wednesday morning. reporting in san jose. i'm mark sayer, ktvu, fox two news. >> local marine mammal experts are trying to determine what is causing the deaths of nearly 300 sea lion pups, scientists says. the stillborn sea lion babies have been showing up at a number of bay area beaches during the past month, and they say the 288 confirmed sea lion deaths. that is way above normal tests to determine what is causing them to die are still not complete. >> happening today, it is a celebration of culture and history in san francisco's chinatown, the city's first chinatown cultural festival will include lion dance performances and martial arts demos. classical chinese music therapy and much more. this event is being put on by the chinatown history and culture association and is intended to attract new visitors to chinatown.
