philadelphia phillies in town. i was fog, sun, breezy. it's always sunny out there. but if you're in the sun, it might be warm. if you're in the shade or where the breeze is, it'll be cool. but 60s 70s to near 80 degrees. back to sal now, i believe. >> yes, sir. doing a little traffic here, even though we're just basically reminding people that it is a nice day to be driving. but don't get going too fast because it is memorial day. chp always does what they call maximum enforcement. that means they actually add officers around the bay area to the roads to make sure, or all over the state actually to the roads to make sure that people are driving safely. they're especially looking for speeding and impaired driving. this is a look at the maps here. you can see traffic is nice and light on the grid, and even highway four has a nice light commute time. now. 7:00 a pancake breakfast will soon be served for the community. it's the way local firefighters say they're giving

back. ktvu is. james torres is live in mill valley, where memorial day festivities are set to start a little early. james >> yes, it's one of those things on a holiday day where the community can get together and just do something for the town that gives them a little bit of a reputation. this is what mill valley is doing here. you see the number of tables that are set up here, the tablecloths that are set on top of them as well, the tents that are also set up. it's all just now getting started here. memorial day weekend is mill valley's biggest annual event. not only is there a community parade later this morning, but that breakfast is just getting started. we'll show you what the event is look like. in years past, families coming out to check out the events, the performers and neighbors showing what the community involvement is all about. there's also going to be a k through eight essay contest that kicks off the parade. that will be followed by groups of color guard dance performances, of course, classic cars as well. the typical things that you see in any parade

throughout the bay area. that parade officially begins at about 1030 this morning. the fire department here wants to make sure that you are the first stop of the morning. here they are offering a pancake breakfast for anyone who is stopping by today. you see the fire truck, of course, with the flag that's hanging just off the ladder there. the number of people who are lining up. it's all just now getting started. so if you are hoping to walk out the door the next couple of minutes, you have plenty of time, plenty of room here. be sure to stop by. mill valley is doing one of those things that just lets everyone know that the community is waking up. they're getting involved, and memorial day is just getting started. even though it's monday. we are live this morning from mill valley. i'm james torres, ktvu, fox two news, james thank you. >> happening today once again. mount diablo will line up after sunset to mark this memorial day. the mayor of danville will hit the switch to turn on the lights of the summit beacon at 8:00 tonight. it's an annual ceremony to honor the u.s. military service members who

died while fighting for our nation. a group of bay area veterans have been invited to attend tonight's ceremony on the top of mount diablo today, people in the east bay will mark 30 years since a teenager was killed in her castro valley home. >> jenny lin's killer has never been caught. her parents were joined by friends, community members and law enforcement officers for a memorial service this weekend. her parents say time has not healed their wounds . >> we've been living under the shadow of this horrible crime for 30 years. we need a closure. >> we need to give jenny a the promise that we gave her, which is to find a justice for her. >> investigators say lin, who was 14 years old at the time, was home alone when she was stabbed to death on may 27th, 1994. the alameda county sheriff's department says it still hopes dna and other evidence collected at the scene will help find her killer.

>> investigators are in touch with people who are developing new, new processes as far as forensically so that is what is, you know, efforts that will be ongoing. >> lin's parents created the jenny lin foundation in a few months after she was killed. the foundation is offering a $200,000 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the person responsible for her death. >> oakland fire crews are investigating the cause of a large fire that started last night at a lumber yard. this morning, crews are still at the economy lumber warehouse on high street near interstate 880. amtrak and freight service in the area next to the warehouse has resumed. the fire started at 745 last night. even though the fire is out, the air quality in the area remains a concern this morning and the county is being asked to monitor conditions. people in the area have been asked to keep their windows and doors closed. >> we have a significant amount of water that's being used at this time, tapping into multiple mains across the city, and so we

have a pretty decent firefight behind us, as you can see now, in front of you from some of the pictures you had before, the fire was very established, putting up a significant amount of heat due to the materials inside of this building being a lumber supply company, no one was inside the building at the time of the fire and no injuries have been reported. >> an american tourist is back at home with his family after being detained for more than 100 days on a caribbean island. police on the island of turks and caicos arrested brian hager in february while he was on vacation with his wife and two children. he was facing 12 years in jail for violating the island's strict gun laws after he brought ammunition in his luggage on friday, a judge allowed him to fly home to pennsylvania after he agreed to pay a $6,700 fine. >> emotion you can imagine, you know, as a father, as a husband to be reunited finally, after 101 days, it is, i feel like the weight of the world has been lifted off my shoulders. >> the judge's decision came after a congressional delegation

flew to the islands one week ago, met with local government leaders and pushed for his release. federal health officials say they're taking steps to provide vaccines for workers who may be exposed to the bird flu. more than 4 million vaccines are expected to be manufactured to help protect at risk poultry and dairy workers, veterinarians and lab technicians. the fda warns human exposure to the bird flu could increase the risk the virus will mutate. no word yet on when those vaccines will be delivered. >> ferry workers with alcatraz city cruises are on strike, demanding better pay benefits and schedules. the workers union and the ferry company have been working on a new contract for a year and a half. the union says it decided to go on strike to show disappointment with the latest counteroffer. the two sides reached a tentative agreement, but the union spokesperson says more strikes could now take place. the ferry says a strike will not have an impact on operations. california is investing more than $6

million to upgrade the highways in marin county. most of that money will go toward repairing the roads that were badly damaged during the powerful winter storms in the last two years. the upgrade project will include storm repairs on highway 101 and highway one along the rugged marin county coast. the funding is part of a $2 billion state project to repair damaged roads all across california, coming up, self checkouts were originally touted as a way to speed up and improve the shopping experience. >> but now another major retailers getting rid of many of its systems here in the bay area after target made many of its self checkouts off limits. >> a plane makes an emergency landing in australia, and we follow the aircraft for every second as it tries to touch down safely

your storms battered parts of texas, oklahoma and arkansas over the weekend. >> it's been an extremely active tornado season in the heart of the country now. more from fox news kevin uretsky. >> the central us once again, from a series of powerful storms that left a trail of destruction in their wake. texas oklahoma and arkansas all saw severe weather saturday night that tore through neighborhoods and ripped homes off their foundations. one of the hardest hit areas appears to be the community of valley

view in cook county, texas, north of dallas, where a gas station and travel center were torn apart by an apparent tornado, took a major hit. >> there's not much left of it, as you can see, multiple fatalities have already been reported. >> officials fear the number could rise as search and rescue crews assess the damage. >> power lines were down, trees were down. it's taken a huge effort just to get back in there. where the most of the damage is. >> little is left of this neighborhood in salina, one family lucky to be out of town when the storm hit their home. now a total loss. it was a godsend. >> we weren't home. the neighbor across the street had an rv and it landed on our house, the only part that's standing is where we would have been sheltered. >> deaths have also been reported in arkansas and oklahoma. tens of thousands still without power across all three states. >> pretty eye opening. it was. it's a lot worse than i thought it was initially. and once the

sun came up, you realize you realize the magnitude, the scenes of destruction, just the latest in what has been a historically bad april in may for the midwest and plains, the system causing the severe weather expected to move east over the rest of memorial day weekend. >> kevin uretsky, fox news government officials in papua new guinea now say more than 2000 people are feared to have been buried alive by a major landslide. >> the landslide happened early friday morning, reducing hundreds of homes to rubble. so far, rescue and recovery efforts have lagged due to widespread destruction in the area's remote location. south pacific island countries officially requested more international support. >> time now. 712 palestinian health workers say israeli airstrikes killed at least 35 people during the latest attacks over the weekend. the workers say israeli warplanes targeted tent cities for unhoused people living in southern gaza city of rafah, and they say most of those killed were women and children. the israeli airstrikes

were reported just hours after hamas fired a barrage of rockets from gaza that set off air raid sirens as far away as tel aviv. a carnival cruise line ship came to the rescue of 25 people who were stranded in a small boat off the coast of mexico. the cruise ship had left long beach in southern california and was headed to baja california on saturday, when the crew got an urgent message from the coast guard, it informed them a ship in their area was sinking. the cruise ship then raced towards the ship in distress and rescued the 25 people on board, including three children. we have some incredible pictures from sydney, australia. a small plane lost power and had to make an emergency landing. an aircraft follows closely behind and records the entire landing. as you can see, the plane had to glide into the airport and skimmed above numerous buildings . while landing, the plane's left wing dipped dangerously close to one of those buildings, and when the pilot touched down, the wheels didn't come out. the plane had to skid at the airport before making a full stop. the people on board safely got out.

there were no injuries. >> on this memorial day, many are pausing to honor the service members who died while serving our country. a little known investigative branch of the us military is doing its part year round to help families whose loved ones have died in past wars. scientists, medical examiners and historians are working together to identify bodies found buried on the battlefield dating back to world war two. >> a lot of these cases, it's been 80 years since that person died and the family still has the story, they may not even have been alive when that service member was alive, but that story gets carried down through the generations. >> the agency has labs on military bases in hawaii and nebraska working to bring a measure of closure to families of fallen service members. memorial day is a federal holiday. this means all government offices, courts and schools are closed. no trading on wall street. banks are closed as well. the us postal service will not deliver any mail, but delivery services such as ups and fedex will have limited express or urgent shipments.

most stores and restaurants are open. costco is closed timedout 714. >> let's take a look at the roads. i do have a look at the bay bridge toll plaza for you, and you can see it is moving along very well. we're not expecting a real commute today, although some people i do understand work on holidays, but most people have the day off. this is a look at interstate 880 and oakland. you can see the traffic on all bay area bridges, including that san mateo bridge looks pretty good. and around the bay area. we don't even see slow traffic on some of the usual slow spots. so take it easy out there. chp does maximum enforcement over holiday periods like this one. it's going to be going until midnight tonight and that means they have more officers on the road. what about that barbecue weather or perhaps you're just going for a nice walk here, steve. >> all right, sal. thank you. well, it's a pretty typical pattern for us. fog making its usual push, but it will retreat back and temperatures will be 60 70s to low 80s. water temps will continue to be incredibly cold,

4950 to 52, half moon bay northward. and that has not changed at all. so you're seeing temperatures also 40s and low 50s unless you're inland and some mid 50s. woodside's already 40 is down to 45. 51 is popular. montara beach, pillar point, half moon bay, redwood city is in there. san mateo close for los altos hills, a lot of 40s though. los altos, stanford, menlo park, atherton and woodside all in there along with pacifica at 49 degrees. a little bit of a northwesterly breeze that keeps the upwelling going, and then an onshore breeze coming right through the golden gate over san pablo bay and out towards the strait as well. not a roaring one, but fairfield west southwest, 1637 39. truckee south lake tahoe 70 on the desert, already 50 on most of the coast until you hit san diego. that system to the north will sweep in tomorrow for a little cooldown. today we get a. really, it's just pretty typical for this time of year. temperatures 60s by the coast or even upper 50s for a few, especially san mateo coast, 70

near around the bay and then inland upper 70s to low 80s. it's looking more likely that that system on the 4th of may was our last rain of the season, unless something happens in june, and that would that would be a that would be unusual, to say the least. here it has happened. but there's nothing saying anything on as far as rain goes statewide since july 1st, the rain year, everyone on this panel is at 100% or higher, including palm springs, which is at 140% bakersfield, as well as 126. so i think we had a good year statewide, not only rain, but also snow. monday forecast sunny. nice after that fog, a little breeze in the afternoon, 6070s and 80s. >> all right steve thank you. skiers and snowboarders only have today to hit the slopes at one of the world's most popular resorts in the sierra nevada. palisades tahoe is celebrating its final full weekend of winter and spring ski season. today, it's the only resort still open in that region, but their season is coming to an end on memorial day. palisades slopes will run

repair and renovation project. the building is 74 years old. it's located on 14th street, oakland city leaders say they needed to shut it down for what they call critical repairs. crews will be building a new roof and installing a new boiler system. they're also upgrading the electrical, heating and cooling systems. the library is expected to be closed until at least early november. staying in oakland, the lakeshore cafe is permanently closing its doors for more than 20 years now. the cafe, just north of lake merritt, has been known for offering breakfast and lunch staples, as well as weekend brunch. the cafe struggled during the pandemic. the owners didn't say whether that was a factor in this decision to close . the cafe will be replaced by another restaurant sometime in the future. >> an actor was shot and killed after confronting a group of thieves in downtown los angeles. police say 37 year old johnny wactor was killed after interrupting three suspects who were trying to steal the catalytic converter on his car.

wactor played brandon corbin on abc's general hospital from 2020 to 2022. police are still looking for the shooter. the parents of professional golfer grayson murray confirmed their 30 year old son died by suicide. the two time pga tour winner died saturday, just one day after withdrawing from a golf tournament in fort worth, texas. his death was shocked and stunned the entire pro golf community, the world's top golfers. among those offering condolences to grayson murray's family and friends. >> i got to know him fairly well over the last few months, you know, shared a couple meals with him, played a couple practice rounds. you know, i was with him, you know, for a few hours. he was at our rental house last week. and, you know, it's a tough day for all of us out here on tour. and we're thinking about his family and, you know, we're praying hard, praying hard for them for sure. >> grayson murray had been open about his past struggles with depression, anxiety and alcohol abuse. his family is now asking for everyone to respect their privacy during this very

difficult time. >> it's the biggest day in auto racing. three events with rich histories on two different continents. >> the day began with the formula one monaco grand prix, but the competition didn't go well at the start. three cars crashed on the opening lap, which drew a red flag and ordered all drivers to stop once cleanup crews removed all the debris on the course. driver charles leclerc, in a ferrari, won his in his native land of monaco. here in the states, the day began with the indy 500, but thunderstorms delayed the start for four hours and it became a huge problem for one specific driver. we'll get to this story in a moment. the indy 500 ended in spectacular fashion as it came down to the last lap, and it was josef newgarden taking the checkered flag for the second straight year. he won by 3/10 of a second. kyle larson finished in 18th place. a sacramento area driver was trying to compete in both the indy 500 and the nascar coca-cola 600 in charlotte, north carolina, but bad weather

in indianapolis meant he couldn't fly to charlotte in time for the start of that race. he was going to drive the end of the coca-cola 600 mile race, but it ended about 400 miles because of bad weather as well. christopher bell won the rain shortened race after it was called at about midnight eastern time. the race had been red flagged for more than two hours because of a steady downpour. larson didn't talk to reporters afterwards, but he had indicated earlier he would love to compete in the indy 500 next year, so there's a chance he will try the double again in a late night post, elon musk shared that his a.i. startup has raised another $6 billion in a new round of funding. >> the deal is now reached $24 billion, making it one of the largest as investors bet on musk's ability to compete against openai, microsoft and google. the funding round was backed by several investors. president biden's campaign is looking to hire a meme manager. the job listing says the person will be in charge of recruiting creators to make memes in support of president biden

until midnight tonight. they have more officers on the road looking for all sorts of violations, including impaired driving and speeding. this is a look at interstate 880 san mateo bridge traffic. also looks very good as you drive through, and you will see that even in some of these areas where we have traditional slow traffic, we don't see it. highway four six, 80, 80 all looking very good. for now. we expect more slow traffic to come back into the bay area later this evening. >> time now is 731. your next trip to the local safeway could take a little longer, as the grocery chain is eliminating self checkouts at some of its bay area stores due to increased theft. ktvu erasmus live here to explain the dilemma for retailers including safeway. ali, in making a decision on the future of self checkout. >> yeah, garcia. it's a balance between customer convenience, saving money on labor costs and trying to prevent problems like theft. this safeway here behind us on pleasant valley in oakland

is one of some in the bay area that are removing the self checkout option in the self checkout kiosks because of the problem of theft. they removed them earlier this month. the store removed all seven of those machines. now there's just a big empty space where it used to be. we can show you the video of this in their place is a display of soda cans and this store isn't the only one making the change. safeway confirms it is eliminating the self checkout option at some of its bay area stores in a statement, they explained why, quote, operational changes have been made at select stores throughout the bay area given the increasing amount of theft. self checkout kiosks have been removed at a few stores. like other local businesses, we are working on ways to curtail escalating thefts so we can ensure the well-being of our employees and foster a welcoming environment for our customers. end quote. customers we spoke with were disappointed to hear about the change and what it could mean with, more people coming in with the crowd is a little bit larger. >> it's going to be a problem.

but because you have a longer lines in the, checkout, this is a real conundrum. >> you know, for these retailers, again, trying to offer the best customer service, the best customer satisfaction, but still trying to make money. >> now, this is not happening at all. safeway stores in the bay area, just some of them. safeway wouldn't tell us exactly how many stores are removing those self checkout kiosks or which ones exactly. but we noticed this morning the safeway on grand avenue in oakland still has self checkout. so does the one on college avenue. this one behind us though, here on pleasant valley no longer has that option. and we do know from our reporting that certain safeway stores in emeryville and san francisco also had the self checkout machines removed. live in oakland. allie rasmus, ktvu, fox two news. allie. >> thank you. investigators are looking into what may have caused a large fire that started last night at a lumber yard in oakland. fire crews are still out at the economy lumber warehouse on high street this morning, watching for flare ups. the fire started at 745 last

night, was contained a few hours later. people in the area have been asked to keep their windows and doors closed as air quality remains a concern. amtrak and freight service in the area to the warehouse has resumed. firefighters say no one was hurt in the incident. four men were seen vandalizing several vehicles in san francisco's marina district. a neighbor says he began recording them at 230 saturday morning near the intersection of bay and fillmore. the men were seen jumping on cars and trying to break into them, the neighbor says. one of the men noticed he was being recorded and threw a bottle at him. the video has been shared with san francisco police. no word on any arrests. >> staying in san francisco near alamo square, neighbors have come together to support a man who's been targeted by recent racist attacks and lost his home in a fire last week. yesterday, they held a block party fundraiser for terry williams. last month, he received two threatening packages at his house. one had a black doll with a noose wrapped around its neck. williams neighbors are now rallying around him. >> it's felt like i needed to do

something. he's been such a great neighbor. he has stopped a break in for me and he's moved my car when i, you know, for street sweeping. >> it feels real good. you know, all the love, all the love, all my neighbors and friends been showing, showing up, writing letters on my garage. >> san francisco police are now investigating both incidents as hate crimes. a motorcyclist killed in a crash in half moon bay has been identified as the son of the city's mayor. the san mateo county sheriff's department says 28 year old joaquin dominic jimenez alvarado died saturday. he collided with a pickup truck on highway one just before 6:00 saturday evening near miranda road, north of half moon bay. he was coming home from san francisco with his girlfriend, who was driving in a car. sheriff's office says the driver of the pickup truck remained at the scene and is cooperating with investigators. the san mateo county sheriff's department released a statement saying, our hearts and thoughts are with mayor jimenez and his entire family during this time of unimaginable loss. the sheriff also encouraged the

community to come together to support the family with love and strength. the city of half moon bay said joaquin dominic was an integral part of the half moon bay community, having grown up on the coast side. he worked as a union stationary engineer in san francisco, loved photography and enjoyed spending time with his family and friends. we ask that the jimenez family be given privacy during this time, as they grieve and mourn their tremendous loss. >> parades are kicking off all over the bay this morning, as people observed memorial day in mill valley. today, the city's biggest annual parade is getting started early. neighbors are heading downtown for a pancake breakfast put on by the fire department to kick off the parade. there will be a student writing contest. then afterwards, the morning will be filled with floats, the color guard, classic cars and more. the uss san francisco memorial foundation and the frisco veterans honored fallen military personnel with a ceremony at lands end. the annual event remembers those who served on the historic ship and recognizes

those who died during world war two. the us naval sea cadet band of the west played music before the ceremony, and members of the us military community also carried flags in a parade of colors. some of them described how the uss san francisco played a key role in the historic battle of guadalcanal. >> it provided naval bombardment of the island so that the marines could conduct land operations. it was a major turning point for the war in the pacific. it was the first of the marine corps offensive land battles in the pacific. head of 11th marine. >> for more on sacrifices crews made aboard the uss san francisco, information is available at the uss frisco memorial at lands end. there are a number of other events in bay in the bay area to mark this memorial day 2024. here's just a partial list. at 9:00 this morning, there will be a memorial day ceremony at mare island naval cemetery in vallejo . at 10:30 a.m, the u.s. department of veterans affairs

leak. firefighters evacuated their building yesterday morning after they spotted the water leaking from a unit on the second floor. people living in the area say this is not the first time there has been a water problem at this senior living facility. >> lots of flooding, lots of pipe issues in this building. there's been multiple units where people have had to leave on, especially on the second floor, there the trash chutes are closed. they're supposed to be picking up the trash for these seniors three times a week. they're not doing that. it trash is sitting in senior homes. i'm removing trash for seniors. other seniors are taking it down, it's been nothing but problems here. >> more than 50 people were evacuated from the oak grove senior terrace apartments. there's no word yet on when they can return to their homes. >> the antioch school board has appointed the district's current head of human resources as the district acting superintendent. the board voted last week to have rob martinez run the district, while the current superintendent is on medical leave. martinez headed the recent internal investigation of a district manager who was accused of bullying and harassing other school

employees. >> time now. 739. today should be a typical weather day in the bay area, which is to say the fog is here in the morning. >> that is correct and to may nothing new there. water temps continue to be really cold. that is helping. take a look at the fog now. the days are, you know, getting longer and the days and nights are short. so we get the visible satellite looks like it's put on the brakes around bodega bay, but making a pretty good surge right over san pablo bay and then right into sonoma and up the napa valley. look at that. takes it all the way up to saint helena. looks like a little bit of a break around yountville, but still some and some solid over napa. the bigger fog bank, though, is right there, all the way down to santa cruz and to scotts valley. gilroy, morgan hill, up and down the san mateo coast. that's that's pretty thick there. so temperatures there will be 50s and 60s. we are seeing some of that fog bank retreat. there's no higher mid-level clouds, so we're good to go there. upper 40s, 50s from half moon bay north, that is really cold water , upper 40s, 50s. so we haven't seen this change since early april, usually, you know, i judge i see how the how the wind

the 25 people on board, including three children. we have some incredible pictures here from sydney, australia. a small plane that you see there lost power and had to make an emergency landing. it comes really close to that building. we recorded the whole thing. the plane had to glide into the airport and skimmed above numerous buildings. as you saw the plane's left wing dipped dangerously close to that building, and when the pilot touched down, the wheels didn't come out. the plane had to skid at the airport before making a full stop. fortunately, everyone safely got out. there were no injuries on this memorial day, it's a federal holiday, which means all government offices, courts and schools are closed. >> there's no trading on wall street. banks are closed. the us postal service will not deliver any mail, but delivery services such as ups and fedex will have limited express or urgent shipments. most stores and restaurants are open. we'll note that costco is closed. >> all right, let's take a look at some of these commutes here. and they're not really commutes i mean, i know that not everyone has the day off, but most people do. this is a look at interstate

80 in oakland near the oakland airport and at the bay bridge toll plaza. the roads are wide open, and you might be tempted to speed. that would be a very bad idea as chp puts extra enforcement on the roads for holiday weekends like this one. and as we look at the grid, you can see that 880 south and 680 highway four, all looking very good this morning as again, not a traditional commute day. the weather this morning, a little fog to start off here steve. >> thank you. sound that is correct. fog continues to kind of work its way up the coast. it took a brief break at bodega bay. can't say i blame it. and then it says i'm on my way northward. so starting to head trying to get to the mendocino coast. it's made a good surge up san pablo bay, right into sonoma, napa up to yountville, saint helena. i think it's about ready to burn off there, though. the bigger surge, though, is no doubt about it. down towards look at this watch the fog here. you don't see this all the time, but it's working its way up up up up up. keep going, keep going . but there's plenty out there on san mateo coast, santa cruz

as well. so they'll be stuck in the 50s and 60s today. areas to the north, probably more in the 70s here. no higher mid-level clouds. i can zoom out. we can't find anything for that, so we don't have to worry about that after the fog clears, it will be sunny and good to go. those water temps continue to be incredibly cold. point arena and point reyes are both 49 cold degrees. san francisco, bowie 50. half moon bay is a brisk 52, so with that, the fog and low clouds has no problem forming as long as they're favorable conditions for an onshore breeze. and we have that 50s on the temps. although vacaville and brentwood, per usual, they're out of the gate into the 60s here, but onshore breeze in place, low clouds in place, so it'll be a typical day here. 5060s by the coast, 60s, 70s around the bay. and then inland. upper 70s to a few low 80s. but there will be an afternoon breeze so quite comfortable here. no extreme one way or the other. morning low clouds, cool, low temps, but sunny. nice breezy afternoon if you're far enough inland, maybe on the warm side if you're closer to the coast. probably on the cool side. it does look pretty quiet.

but thunderstorms delayed the start for four hours and it became a huge problem for one specific driver. we'll get to his story in just a minute. the driver, the indy 500, ended in spectacular fashion as it came down to the last lap. as it was josef newgarden taking the checkered flag for the second straight year. he won by 3/10 of a second. we mentioned this. kyle larson finished in 18th place. the sacramento area driver was trying to compete in both the indy 500 and the nascar coca-cola 600 in charlotte, north carolina. but the bad weather indianapolis meant he couldn't fly to charlotte in time for the start of that race. he was going to drive the end of the coca-cola 600 mile race, but it ended about 400 miles because of bad weather there as well. christopher bell won the rain shortened race after it was called about midnight eastern time. the race had been red flagged for more than two hours because of a steady downpour. larson didn't talk to reporters afterwards, but he had indicated earlier he would love to compete

hate crimes. a motorcyclist killed in a crash in half moon bay has been identified as the son of the city's mayor. san mateo county sheriff's department says 28 year old joaquin dominic jimenez alvarado died saturday. he collided with a pickup truck on highway one just before 6:00 saturday evening near miranda road, north of half moon bay. he was coming home from san francisco with his girlfriend, who was driving in a car. the sheriff's department says the driver of the pickup truck remained at the scene and is cooperating with investigators. san mateo county sheriff's released a statement saying, our hearts and thoughts are with mayor jimenez and his entire family during this time of unimaginable loss. the sheriff is also encouraging the community to come together to support the family with love and strength. the city of half moon bay said joaquin dominic was an integral part of the half moon bay community, having grown up on the coast side. he worked as a union stationery engineer in san francisco, loved photography and enjoyed spending time with his friends and family. we ask

at today's dollars and cents. pam. >> yes, some interesting changes coming this week. and when trading resumes tomorrow, the nasdaq will start at a new record high. stocks rallied on friday. the nasdaq got some help from nvidia. some other tech earnings and is getting close to 17,000. we're going to see if the dow can test that 40,000 level again this week. changes begin tomorrow for buying and selling stocks. currently, transactions take two business days from when you buy a particular stock to when it officially transfers into your account, and the money goes to the seller. starting tomorrow, that transaction will only take one business day to complete the new rules apply to stocks, bonds, municipal securities and some mutual funds. economists say the shorter cycle should free up more liquidity in the market, reduce volatility and margins, and reduce the chance of default. walmart's ending an exclusive credit card partnership with capital one. now a judge ruled in favor of walmart and has allowed the deal to end early, citing capital one failed to provide a sufficient

littered an overnight dog rescue . the department says raccoons chased a puppy off a cliff in the potrero hill neighborhood. luckily, the pup didn't have any injuries after the fall, fire crews used a rope to get it back to safety. it has since been reunited with its human companion. an arizona teen is recovering after a bear snuck into his cabin and attacked him. the 50 year old boy was relaxing inside his family's cabin when the black bear entered through an open door. the bear swiped at the boy, scratching up his face and arms. family members say
